Inside Trump’s meeting with Senate GOP

Senators arrived at their weekly lunch Tuesday prepared to witness a heavyweight bout between President Trump and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) even brought popcorn.

But the meeting was largely free of turmoil, according to the senators who were in the room, though it included some memorable moments.

Corker’s name didn’t come up during the meeting, and the Tennessee senator didn’t use a question-and-answer session to confront Trump personally.

And unlike past presidents who have addressed Senate conferences, Trump actually sat down to eat with his fellow Republicans, digging into a meal of meatloaf followed by cherry pie.

“I’m really glad that the president came,” said Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), who sat with Trump at the head table and asked the president about tax cuts and emphasized her interest “in making sure that we have tax cuts for the middle class.”

There was no hint that only hours before, Trump had been immersed in a feud with Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Trump didn’t say anything to his other main Senate Republican critic, Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), either. And Flake refrained from taking on Trump in front of his colleagues.

Trump largely appeared interested in touting his accomplishments at the meeting, senators told The Hill.

He extolled the 70 bills he signed since taking office, assured Republican senators that he would deliver tax relief for middle-income families and reiterated that they must lower the corporate tax rate to 20 percent.

All were involved in the nuclear racketeering matter and the Russia meddling matter.

The Obama administration awarded a visa allowing a top Russian nuclear executive to enter the United States after the FBI had already gathered substantial evidence he was involved in a racketeering scheme involving bribery, kickbacks, extortion and money laundering, court records show.

The records show TENEX executive Vadim Mikerin was engaged in illegal conduct as early as the fall of 2009, yet he was allowed to enter the country by the Obama administration with a L1 temporary work visa when he arrived in December 2011.

Milkerin’s visa was renewed in August 2014, just months before he was arrested and charged with extortion, the records show. He and his company applied for the visa in summer 2011, records show.

The lengthy delay is now being investigated by multiple GOP-led congressional committees, one of which sent a letter Tuesday to the State Department and Homeland Security Department demanding answers.

“It is concerning that a suspected criminal was able to apply for and renew a work visa while being under FBI investigation,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote in the letter.

Of interest to investigators, the sources told ABC News, are documents and electronic communications that could help determine whether Smith worked in concert with anyone from the campaign of then-candidate Donald Trump. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has asked for those documents and the Smith estate has begun turning them over, the sources said.

Nix, who heads Cambridge Analytica, told a third party that he reached out to Assange about his firm somehow helping the WikiLeaks editor release Clinton’s missing emails, according to two sources familiar with a congressional investigation into interactions between Trump associates and the Kremlin. Those sources also relayed that, according to Nix’s email, Assange told the Cambridge Analytica CEO that he didn’t want his help, and preferred to do the work on his own.

If the claims Nix made in that email are true, this would be the closest known connection between Trump’s campaign and Assange.

Cambridge Analytica did not provide comment for this story by press time.

After publication, Assange provided this statement to The Daily Beast: ”We can confirm an approach by Cambridge Analytica and can confirm that it was rejected by WikiLeaks.”
