I am just three years younger than John. I truly love him. I served in the same war (not by choice, drafted. No saint here)and I was not the hero he was, I worked as nurse and never got so much as a needle stick injury. I am 69 yo.now I wanted to support him. Last night I could see he he was having mobility issues, much as I am these days. Mine due to arthritis and hip problem. And he got tired and weak as I do sometimes. He has more reason than me because of the abuse his body suffered from mistreatment/torture. SCRANTON, PA — It was a homecoming of sorts for Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.
Joined by their respective spouses (one of whom, of course, happens to be a former President of the United States), the two former rivals in the Democratic primary made the case for Barack Obama in a region of the state where he got creamed by Sen Clinton by more than 50 points on April 22nd.
While Scranton is largely Democratic, many natives are of the working class (and white) demographic that McCain’s been targeting — and that’s been slow to warm to Obama.
BIden — who was born and raised in Scranton for 13 years — and Clinton, whose father was born here and who spent summers on Lake Winola, could make a big difference here. While Obama has a healthy lead in state polls, the GOP is hoping to turn Pennsylvania — and its 21 electoral votes — red with a strong performance in the Northeast.
Before either Scrantonite could speak, the crowd heard from President Clinton — who has been accused of less-than-enthusiastic support for the top of the Democratic ticket. Clinton attempted to put that to rest, calling Obama the candidate “who has the best ideas, who’s got the best instincts, who’s got the best ability to understand these challenges, who’s got the best supporting cast.”
Clinton also defended his wife’s efforts on Obama’s behalf. “She has done 50 events for Sen. Obama,” said the former president. “She has not only done more to support him than any runner up in a Democratic primary process in my lifetime, she has more than all the other runners-up combined.”
“The reason that’s important is that more than three-fourths of you supported her,” he said. “You need to remember, if you supported her, why you did it.”
Taking the stage to loud chants of “Hillary!” Senator Clinton — fittingly for the former frontrunner — told voters not to be lulled into a false sense of security. “The polls show Barack and Joe ahead now, and that’s good news, she said. “But I don’t pay much attention to polls.”
“If we can get a big vote out of Northeastern Pennsylvania for Barack and Joe, there isn’t any way they lose Pennsylvania. And if they win Pennsylvania, there’s no way they lose the White House.”
Biden greeted his fellow Senator with a hug and a kiss on the forehead, telling the crowd how much he loves her. “The feeling’s mutual,” Clinton said.
Biden said Clinton embodies the best of Scranton - a fighting spirit on behalf of the downtrodden. “The one thing I find about this city is what we learned in our faith and our family. There is the one most serious abuse a man or a woman or a government can engage in, is to abuse power. Abuse power.”
“This is a woman who understands what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s fair and what’s unfair, but is always, always fighting against the abuse of power by the powerful.”
On a side note, President Clinton said he and his wife celebrated their 33rd anniversary on Saturday. “You know what my best present was?” Clinton said. “She actually let me watch most of those football games yesterday, it was great. What a gift.”

McCain Vows to 'Whip' Obama's 'You Know What' in Final Debate

In an effort to energize supporters at his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Va., John McCain on Sunday may have also whipped up a little controversy with a remark that he'd "whip" Barack Obama's "you know what" at the next debate.
The presidential candidates are meeting Wednesday in their final televised debate before the Nov. 4 election.
But McCain's pledge -- coming after two days of racial grievances aired by McCain's camp over a comparison made by Rep. John Lewis of McCain to the late Gov. George Wallace -- has sent shivers down the spines of some Republicans who find the racially charged verb may be used against the candidate.
Addressing several dozen volunteers at his campaign headquarters outside Washington, McCain promised some of his signature "straight talk" about the state of the race, and went on to acknowledge his drop in the polls.
National and many battleground state polls have shown him trailing Obama amid the deepening market crisis.
"We're a couple points down, OK, nationally, but we're right in this game," McCain said to cheers. "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, they want knowledge and they want vision. We'll give that to America."
McCain said he and running mate Sarah Palin would continue campaigning hard in the three weeks left before Election Day, in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado. The two planned a joint appearance Monday in Virginia, a Republican stronghold turned battleground this time.
"We're going to spend a lot of time and after I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," McCain said.
The two men will debate Wednesday at Hofstra University on Long Island, N.Y. CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer will moderate the 90-minute forum.
Still, McCain promised to run a "respectful" campaign in the weeks to come.
"I respect Senator Obama, we will conduct a respectful race and be sure everyone else does too. But there are stark difference between us," McCain said.
Meanwhile, top advisers say McCain is weighing new economic proposals to help the nation weather the financial crisis. The Arizona senator refused to answer a reporter's question Sunday about what plans he might be considering
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said McCain was considering policy proposals that would cut taxes on investments.
"I think it goes along the lines of now's the time to lower tax rates for investors, capital gains tax, dividend tax rates, to make sure that we can get the economy jump-started," Graham said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "It will be a very comprehensive approach to jump-start the economy by allowing capital to be formed easier in America by lowering taxes."
McCain already has laid out proposals to address the crisis, including a $300 billion plan for the federal government to buy distressed mortgages and renegotiate them at a reduced price.
The Arizona senator has said his plan is necessary to get thousands of bad mortgages off the books in order to stabilize home values and open up credit. But critics said the plan would do little more than reward financial institutions that made the bad loans to in the first place.
On Friday, McCain called for legislation that suspends for one year the requirement that investors age 70 1/2 begin to liquidate their retirement accounts. The Arizona senator said it would be unfair to force seniors to sell their stocks when stock prices have tumbled so severely. Obama aides said the Illinois senator favors a similar effort.
Obama also has offered plans to address the fiscal crisis but nothing as sweeping or controversial as McCain's mortgage proposal. On Friday, the Illinois senator announced a $900 million plan to temporarily extend an expiring tax break that lets small businesses write off investments up to $250,000 immediately, rather than over the course of several years.
Aides said Obama also wants to extend the Small Business Administration's disaster loan program to help small businesses that cannot access other sources of capital, as well as eliminate fees on SBA loan guarantees and increase the size of loans that could be covered. They put the cost at $5 billion.
Both candidates voted for the $700 billion bailout proposal Congress passed and President Bush signed into law earlier this month.

Meanwhile, top advisers say McCain is weighing new economic proposals to help the nation weather the financial crisis. The Arizona senator refused to answer a reporter's question Sunday about what plans he might be considering
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said McCain was considering policy proposals that would cut taxes on investments.
"I think it goes along the lines of now's the time to lower tax rates for investors, capital gains tax, dividend tax rates, to make sure that we can get the economy jump-started," Graham said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "It will be a very comprehensive approach to jump-start the economy by allowing capital to be formed easier in America by lowering taxes."
McCain already has laid out proposals to address the crisis, including a $300 billion plan for the federal government to buy distressed mortgages and renegotiate them at a reduced price.
The Arizona senator has said his plan is necessary to get thousands of bad mortgages off the books in order to stabilize home values and open up credit. But critics said the plan would do little more than reward financial institutions that made the bad loans to in the first place.
On Friday, McCain called for legislation that suspends for one year the requirement that investors age 70 1/2 begin to liquidate their retirement accounts. The Arizona senator said it would be unfair to force seniors to sell their stocks when stock prices have tumbled so severely. Obama aides said the Illinois senator favors a similar effort.
Obama also has offered plans to address the fiscal crisis but nothing as sweeping or controversial as McCain's mortgage proposal. On Friday, the Illinois senator announced a $900 million plan to temporarily extend an expiring tax break that lets small businesses write off investments up to $250,000 immediately, rather than over the course of several years.
Aides said Obama also wants to extend the Small Business Administration's disaster loan program to help small businesses that cannot access other sources of capital, as well as eliminate fees on SBA loan guarantees and increase the size of loans that could be covered. They put the cost at $5 billion.
Both candidates voted for the $700 billion bailout proposal Congress passed and President Bush signed into law earlier this month.

But Palin said Obama's record on the matter is too extreme to be ignored, and she spent 10 minutes of her 30-minute speech discussing abortion.
"A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for activist courts that will continue to smother the open and democratic debate that we deserve and that we need on this issue of life," she said. "Obama is a politician who has long since left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life."
Obama opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade and disagreed with Supreme Court ruling to uphold the "Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act." He did not cast a vote on Prohibiting Funds for Groups that Perform Abortions amendment in 2007.
Palin opposes abortion in all cases, including rape and incest, except when a mother's life is in danger, and said she believes Roe v. Wade should be overturned and the decision given to the states.
McCain voted for the Prohibit Partial Birth Abortion bill in 2003 and "yes" for Prohibiting Funds for Groups that Perform Abortions amendment in 2007. He believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and also supports the Supreme Court ruling upholding the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.
Palin also talked about a remark Obama made about sex education while campaigning in Johnstown in March, when he told a voter he didn't want his daughters "punished with a baby" or "punished with an STD" if they were not educated about sex and made a mistake.
"So I listened when our opponent defended his unconditional support for unlimited abortions and he said he said that a woman shouldn't have to be 'Punished with a baby,' " Palin said as the audience jeered at Obama. "Ladies and gentlemen, he said that right here in Johnstown. 'Punished with a baby.' It's about time we called him on it."
Obama is also in Pennsylvania Saturday -- campaigning in the heavily Democratic city of Philadelphia.
During his four-stop swing around the city, Obama acknowledged McCain's efforts to "tone down the rhetoric" on the campaign trail.
"I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other. I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Sen. Ever since last weekend, when Palin first accused Obama of "palling around with a terrorist," referring to 1960s radical William Ayers, rowdy crowds have called Obama a liar, terrorist and worse.

But the Arizona senator was met by a sea of boos when asking the crowd to be more respectful toward Obama.
When the crowd began to boo, McCain told them "No, no. I want everyone to be respectful."
Obama later dispensed with polite talk and pivoted to his main campaign trail argument that McCain is out of touch on the economy.
"Sen. McCain's campaign manager actually said that Sen. McCain wasn't talking about the market because there's just not much a candidate for president can say -- and they aren't sure what he'd say each day even if he did talk about it," Obama said.
"But here's the thing Philadelphia. They can run misleading ads, and pursue the politics of anything goes, they can try to change the subject. They can do that what they want to do because the American people understand what's going on -- but it's not going to work. Not this time."

Maar goed, de McCain campagne is hopeloos en gelukkig is de kans zeer klein dat ze nog terug gaan komen. De manier waarop ze campagne voeren doet het ook niet goed in de peilingen, dus zolang ze op dezelfde voet doorgaan gaan ze verliezen. Bill Kristol had een aardig stuk in de NY Times, dat McCain eigenlijk totaal overnieuw moet beginnen met een eervolle campagne om nog een kans te maken. Nate Silver heeft daaraan toegevoegd dat zo'n actie als wanhopig wordt gezien, en dat McCain eerst ervoor moet zorgen dat ze weer wat momentum krijgen. En anders verzinnen ze dat wel gewoon.

Ik zag net wat grappigs op CNN. Meteen toen McCain op het podium kwam, voor het debat, begon hij zijn blaadje vol te schrijven. Snel wat punten die hij net voor de uitzending heeft gelezen opschrijven, zoals bij een examen? Het is niet erg, en misschien doet Obama het ook wel, maar grappig is het wel.

De Clintons wonen zondag, samen met Obama's running mate Joe Biden, een campagnebijeenkomst bij in Scranton, in de staat Pennsylvania. Biden is in het stadje geboren. Hillary's vader is er opgegroeid en ligt er ook begraven.

Stel dat ik mijn vrouw en kinderen een nieuwe auto, een luxe vakantie in de Bahama's en een zilvergerand bubble-bad beloof. Vervolgens knalt de economie in elkaar. Ik ga dan ineens veel minder verdienen.

Prachtplannen
Paniek in Huize Groenhuijsen? Welnee! We nemen een nóg mooiere auto, nóg langere vakantie en geen zilver- maar een goudgerand bubbeltjesbad. Moet kunnen! Dat is immers precies wat McCain en Obama doen. Ze handhaven ondanks de bankencrisis hun prachtplannen voor gezondheidszorg, onderwijs, nieuwe wegen en een schoner milieu.
De belastingen gaan vast fiks omhoog gaan om al dat fraais te betalen. Welnee! De belastingen gaan omlaag. U leest het goed o-m-l-a-a-g.
Kunt u een beetje rekenen. Ik ook. Maar zij niet.
Mooi weer blijven spelen
Dit zijn de verkiezingen van de hoop. McCain-fans nemen gretig afstand van de ongekend impopulaire George Bush. Mag 'ie niet al vast weg?
En onder Obama-aanhangers kolkt een ontembaar verlangen om de gehate man uit Texas ("The Toxic Texan") met een enkele reis uit Washington te verdrijven. Kom alsjeblieft nooit meer terug.
Hoop op betere tijden heeft kiezers altijd geïnspireerd. Frustratie dat het wéér niet lukt, leidt even zo vaak tot teleurstelling en zelfs woede. McCain en Obama nemen onverantwoorde risico's door mooi weer te blijven spelen.
Gelooft u het? Ik ook niet.
Kans op winst voor Obama steeds groter
Wie zijn in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis de echt grote presidenten? Dat zijn de dappere mannen die níet mooi weer spelen. Abraham Lincoln wist 150 jaar geleden het land ondanks een Burgeroorlog van een paar honderdduizend (!) doden bij elkaar te houden.
Franklin Roosevelt was de optimist die Amerika de ongekend bloedige Tweede Wereldoorlog instuurde. John Kennedy riep zijn medeburgers op offers te brengen voor een groter doel.
Zo hoort het. In tijden van nood heb je een leider nodig die hoop geeft en offers vraagt. Het een kan niet zonder het ander.
Falen
Obama en McCain falen op dit vlak - uit angst kiezers te verkiezen - jammerlijk. Ze vertellen niet hoe groot de problemen zijn waar Amerika voor staat. Het bontst maakte John McCain het vorige week toen hij sprak over de onmetelijke tekorten in de Amerikaanse AOW. Stop de persen: John gaat er een studiecommissie voor oprichten! Poeh, die durft!
Obama kan er ook wat van. Verplichte ziekteverzekering wil hij. Voor iedereen. 'n Lofwaardig streven maar nu onhaalbaar en onbetaalbaar. Waarom wekt hij die verwachting telkens weer?
In de Republikeinse partij houden ze al rekening met een electoraal pak rammel. De kans dat Obama wint wordt met de dag groter. Maar wat kan hij dan waarmaken van al zijn idealen? U en ik weten het akelige antwoord.
Zompig ruikende Oval Office
De nieuwe president heeft geen tijd voor leuke dingen voor de mensen. Hij heeft na zijn verkiezing alleen maar tijd voor dweilen. Het water gutst immers nog over de drempel. Voor de hele zwik een beetje opdroogt, is het tekort van de Amerikaanse regering wéér groter. En door de economische recessie gieren de belastinginkomsten omlaag.
De president zit dan in de nog wat zompig ruikende Oval Office. Het verlanglijstje van 2008 ligt er verfrommeld bij. Wat had hij zijn kiezers allemaal niet beloofd? Hoe maak je vanuit zo'n belabberde startpositie een succes van je presidentschap?
Bush
En de Republikeinen van George Bush? Die zitten natuurlijk geweldig te kniezen over hun daverende nederlaag tegen Obama.
Of is er ook reden voor een snippertje optimisme? Sommige Republikeinen kijken juist handenwrijvend toe hoe president Obama kronkelt en worstelt. Laat hem de rotzooi maar lekker opruimen.
De Republikeinen hebben geduld. De eerste bumperstickers over '2012' zijn al in omloop.
Wie krijgt er op lange termijn gelijk? Boeiend!
