Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in an interview scheduled for publication on Sunday, told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine that he could not rule out the possibility of a military attack against Iran, and called for the international community to step up action against Teheran.

Calling Iran's race to obtain nuclear weapons an existential threat for Israel, Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky said Friday that a nuclear Iran also threaten all of Europe.

"A nuclear Iran is a threat to Israel but can also have an effect on the entire Middle East," Kaplinsky said during a mayoral conference near Jerusalem. "A nuclear Iran will pose a threat way beyond Israel's borders, possibly even a threat to all of Europe."

Recently, Kaplinsky said, Iran received a shipment of anti-aircraft missiles from Russia and was in touch with China regarding additional arms deals. "There are disagreements when their [nuclear] program will be effective," the general said. "But we predict that Iran will reach the ability in the near future."

Concerning the Baker-Hamilton report, Kaplinsky said: "In my opinion, the strategy used and the way the United States decides to pull out of Iraq, will have an effect on us and the entire region."

Irak: een uitzichtloze oorlog
Sinds deze week erkennen ook de Verenigde Staten dat ze in Irak niet aan de winnende hand zijn. De situatie in Irak lijkt op een moeras en wordt door velen als hopeloos omschreven. Onder leiding van voormalig minister van Buitenlandse Zaken James Baker legde de Irak Studiegroep deze week het falen van de aanpak van Bush, Cheney en Rumsfeld genadeloos bloot. The three writers are labeled British Literary Neocons or "blitcons", a slur not even half as clever as Tariq Ali's "belligerati". I suppose it's only fair to point out that the three are all British and are all writers, but "Neocon" is an interesting label for three people who opposed the Iraq War.

Surprise of surprises, Sardar accuses the writers of practicing Orientalism. Never mind how ridiculous it is to accuse a writer of Muslim ancestry who grew up in India of a Western bias against the East, the very notion of Orientalism is at odds with the claim that these writers are neoconservative Bush-backers. The trouble with Bush's policy wasn't the belief that Arabs are backward alien beings, but that they were essentially the same as Americans. If Mr. Sardar insists on peppering his attacks with post-colonialist buzz words, he should at least do his readers the service of reacquainting himself with Said's writing.

Of course, the entire piece is based on malicious selective readings. How else could anyone assert that "in Rushdie's world, a humane interpretation of Islam is a total impossibility." It's particularly amazing that he comes to this conclusion after reading Shalimar The Clown, a novel that depicts the gentle Sufism prevalent in India. Rushdie is also mocked for labeling the Taliban the "the cruelest regime on earth" and for rejoicing at the deracination of their regime. No doubt Sardar views this as further evidence of his "Orientalism". Sardar then claims that over the past 20 years Rushdie’s politics have migrated from “from political left to centre right” but makes no attempt to prove this is the case. In reality the move was more from left to centre left, a nuanced re-alignment that Sardar seems incapable of appreciating.

Sardar’s piece is also peppered with moronic statements like "Amis has never even met an ordinary Muslim in his life." Well, I suppose that depends on one's definition of "ordinary Muslim" but it's impossible for anyone living in contemporary Britain not to have encountered all sorts of Muslims. Amis is later attacked because his portrayal of Muhammed Atta focuses too much on the man's hatred. It should be clear by this point that Sardar isn't even trying to construct a reasonable argument. I have some of my own objections to Amis’s The Age of Horrorism, but in general I found it to be quite lucid in attacking Islamic fanaticism while avoiding demonizing the entire religion. Of course, Sardar seems only to have read the passages that suit his screed’s thesis.

For his part, McEwan is attacked solely for his wonderful novel Saturday. While Sardar is forced to admit that "Saturday is subtle enough to give a dual warning against both interventionist and isolationist politics", he objects to McEwan’s explicit articulation of the troubles of isolationism. How’s that as a plea for intellectual honesty?

Rushdie, Amis, and McEwan are great writers who have very interesting things to say about our world. All three are also men of the Left who nevertheless oppose the all-to-prevalent Leftist belief that Islamic fanaticism is a righteous expression of anti-imperialism. They should be applauded for their considerable talent and their moral clarity, attributes that are only made clearer when they’re attacked by idiots like Ziauddin Sardar.
