Nog steeds in spectator fleetquote:1750GMT Pirates gybe in the spectator fleet and is now looking as though they have closed up on movistar and as they come out of the spectators they could be in second place. Both boats are still in the spectator fleet which could make for some interesting spectating. It looks as though ABN AMRO ONE might have dropped behind Ericsson. ONE stayed on the right side of the course and seem to be sailing in much softer wind and are losing ground. The boats do cross and Ericsson has crossed behind, but are closer. The big battle is between movistar and Pirates.

quote:1755 Pirates are heading over to the Eastern Shore once again. The boats have to go thorugh the gate of the starting line to complete this first part of the course to New York. It is very tactical at the moment, though it looks as though the forecast will be for shedloads of wind for tonight as they clear the Bay entrance and turn north towards New York. Ericsson seem to have overtaken ABN AMRO ONE and are closing on ABN AMRO TWO. Going out to the right has not paid for ABN AMRO ONE. Pirates have overtaken movistar. ABN AMRO TWO and Ericsson are very close and at the crossing they have taken ABN AMRO TWO and have gone into fourth place. Brunel is closing on ABN AMRO ONE.
quote:1800GMT Brunel are closing on a very slow-looking ABN AMRO ONE. Pirates have closed right up on Brasil 1 and might have closed down Brasil 1 to the extent that the Brazilians could be in dangerof losing the lead. Torben Grael has gybed across to try to get inside the Pirates and seems to have set up a perfect covering gybe over Pirates and are serving them dirty wind. Brasil 1 have slipped about three boat lengths ahead of Pirates again, with movistar another four lengths back. ABN AMRO TWO seems to have got back in front of Ericsson once again.
9 lengtes maarquote:1810GMT As the boats close on the gate the leading three are just nine lengths apart. The spectators have had a magnificent sight of some very close racing in some of the most exciting boats on the planet.
quote:1815GMT Brasil 1 gets to the gate first and as they leading three go through the gate, they all gybe onto port and go back towards that left hand side of the course where there seems to be more wind. Brasil 1 took one hour and eight minutes to get to the gate - some eight miles of sailing - Pirates are 43 seconds back, then movistar 35 seconds behind second place. ABN AMRO TWO are in fourth and gybe at the gate. TWO gybes while Ericsson carries on in a puff of wind. ABN AMRO ONE have maintained their lead over Brunel but it is only about six boat lengths. movistar seems to have slowed badly - a crab pot perhaps?
quote:1820GMT Times through the gate were Brasil 1 at one hour and eight minutes after the start, followed at 43 secionds by Pirates. Then movistar 35 seconds further back. ABN AMRO TWO was one minute and 54 seconds behind the Spaniards, Ericsson 28 seconds behind TWO. ABN AMRO ONE was one minute and 19 seconds behind Ericsson and the Brunel a further 45 seconds in arrears.
quote:1825GMT The leading pack seems to be pulling away as the fleet sets off down the Chesapeake Bay towards the entrance and the Atlantic Ocean. At the moment it is all the Farr boats' race, with ABN AMRO TWO not too unhappy in the conditions, but ABN AMRO ONE hasdropped even to the extent that Brunel might have grabbed sixth place. But, even the leaders will know that there are big winds promised for tonight and the Black Boat is significently faster than the others when it's all about heavy wind power sailing. Certainly the leaders at the moment will know that there is still a significent distance to sail and the conditions are going to change dramatically. The likely finish time in New York is late evening on Monday - a passage of just under 30 hours.
Precies.

quote:5/8/2006 11:30:18 AM GMT Race meteorologist Chris Bedford says, “the angle of this breeze is definitely bad news for those looking for a fast reach up the coast. The coastal low, S of the fleet, is developing much faster and more dramatically than earlier forecasts and the winds are backed more towards the NE. The forecast to remain 25–30 knots for much of today. This puts the fleet hard on the wind with some gear-testing conditions."
