A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOCIAL DISTORTION
The late ‘70’s…
The first raw, sloppy, speeding guitar chords announcing an Orange County punk scene blared from Huntington Beach and Fullerton California in 1978. They echoed the sound forged in 1976-77 in the seminal punk undergrounds of New York City, London and Los Angeles.
In the early days, O.C. punk’s unyielding musical force slammed up against an immovable cultural object: the Orange County dream of quiet, well-oriented, economically impregnable suburban living.
Treating rowdy, often outrageous fans as a gang element, local authorities shut down a series of clubs that championed the music. But O.C. punk proved too hardy to erase.
In 1979, Mike Ness forms Social Distortion with drummer Casey Royer and brothers Rikk and Frank Agnew.
"Basically, they’re into violence," a Huntington Beach police sergeant told the LA Times in 1979. "They have a hatred virtually for everybody. There’s no motive, no rationale. They just do whatever they feel like at the time." The officer went on to plea: "We can’t do anything with out the public’s help. It’s the only way we’re going to stop it." Misjudging punk as a gang movement, police in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach detained kids on the streets snapping their mug shots for police files.
The ‘80’s…
Mike Ness was the original tenant of "the Black Hole" a one-bedroom pad in a nondescript Fullerton apartment complex.
After meeting Dennis Danell, a punk loving classmate, Ness insisted Danell, who at the time didn’t play an instrument, be included in the band as the Bass player. Not wanting to pause to break in a novice, Royer and the Agnews left and formed their own band instead.
The next few years saw a revolving-door membership.
KROQ-FM deejay Rodney Bingenheimer embraced Orange County music, playing highlights from its major local bands on his Sunday night radio show. Robbie Fields, a small-time music entrepreneur, saw potential in suburban punk. Fields combed the clubs and backyard parties, signing many of the significant local bands to his Posh Boy label for their initial singles or albums.
In the early ‘80’s, Mike Ness was brawling outside of the Cuckoo’s Nest with a rival punk rocker who wrestled him to the ground and bite off a chunk of his left ear.
1981, Social Distortion release their first single "Mainliner/Playpen" on the Posh Boy label.
In 1982 Social Distortion, along with LA’s Youth Brigade and DC’s Minor Threat, filmed the documentary "Another State of Mind," which follows the band’s first stormy cross-continental tour.
By late1983, Social Distortion’s first recording line up consisted of Mike Ness, Danell (now on rhythm guitar), bassist Brent Liles, and drummer Derek O’Brien. Released on 13th Floor, "Mommy’s Little Monster" gained the band a national name in punk circles.
New Year’s Eve 1983, a fed-up Brent Liles and Derek O’Brien bailed out of the band in the middle of the show.
At the beginning of 1984, Ness and Danell recruited John Maurer, another old school buddy from Fullerton to play bass and Christopher Reece came in on the drums. This lineup weathered Social Distortion’s worst years.
1984 "Another State Of Mind" was one of the few punk videos to air on Mtv.
1984 Social Distortion continued to play locally and on weekend get-aways to Arizona and Northern California.
Late 1985, Mike Ness, after a series of hospitalizations and brief jailings, had put on the brakes by going into a drug recovery program.
1988, Social Distortion release "Prison Bound," an album whose moving title cut about a wasted life is one of the greatest songs ever to come out of Orange County, Ness turned Social Distortion’s albums into an ongoing dialogue about impulsiveness, it’s consequences and the hard struggle for maturity.
The ‘90’s…
In 1990, "Social Distortion," SD’s first album on a major label (Epic), the first not financed by the band itself was released.
In 1992 Social Distortion released "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell." The second release on the major label Epic.
Although Social Distortion proudly proclaimed its Fullerton origins, other upwardly mobile rockers played down their O.C. connections.
July 1995, Time Bomb Recordings re-issues "Mommy’s Little Monster," "Prison Bound," and releases the single compilation "Mainliner, Wreckage from the Past."
Social Distortion took an extended hiatus following the release of "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell," and returned to the studios in the fall of 1995 to record "White Light, White Heat, White Trash."
August1996 Chuck Biscuits becomes the new drummer for Social Distortion.
Summer of 1997, Social Distortion play the Vans Warped Tour. Other bands on the bill include Pennywise, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Helmet.
February 1998, Time Bomb Recordings re-issues the punk classic "Hell Comes To Your House."
April 7,8,9 1998, Social Distortion record three nights at the Roxy and release it as an album on Time Bomb Recordings.
Early 1999, Mike Ness records and releases his first solo record "Cheating At Solitaire."
Late 1999, Mike Ness records and releases the cover collection "Under The Influences."
The ‘00’s…
February 29, 2000 Dennis Danell, the 38-year old guitarist, died of natural causes. "I am saddened beyond any possible form of expression. Dennis and I have been friends since boyhood, starting Social Distortion while we where in high school. My deepest regrets to his family." - Mike Ness
May 6, 2000 "When The Angels Sing" a benefit for the family of Dennis Danell. Bands who were on the bill include Social Distortion, The Offspring, X, Pennywise, TSOL, Punk Rock Karoke, Agent Orange and Rock Star BBQ.
Fall of 2000, Jonny "2 Bags" Wickersham becomes the new guitarist for Social Distortion.
Fall of 2000, Charlie Quintana becomes the new drummer for Social Distortion.
Fall of 2003 Social Distortion head into the studio to record "Sex, Love and Rock'n'Roll," their first full length studio recordl since 1996 and first record since founding member Dennis Danell passed away.
July 27, 2004 Social Distortion release "Live in The Orange County" their first live DVD
August 5, 2004 After 20 years of serving as Social Distortion’s bass player John Maurer has decided to leave the band. Maurer completed the recording of “Sex, Love and Rock and Roll’, the new Social Distortion full length studio recording but has decided to forgo the usual extended promotion and touring in order to stay home and devote time to his wife and two children. Matt Freeman of Rancid has come aboard for the cycle of Sex, Love and Rock'n' Roll.
August 24, 2004 Another State of Mind will be released on DVD for the time
September 28, 2004 Sex, Love and Rock'n'Roll will be released on CD and limited edition red vinyl.

ELK Social Distortion album is geweldig is mijn ervaring. Helaas kwam ik daar te laat achter en heb ze vorig optreden in Nederland daardoor maar een paar nummers gezien (weggelopen tijdens de Lowlands-show... onvergeeflijk achteraf....). Hopelijk komen ze snel naar de Paradiso of een andere waardige zaal in het land!
De nieuwe release klinkt uitermate sterk, met name de eerste 4 nummers, en 7 en 10. Prachtige liederen die elke gitaarrock liefhebber moet aanspreken. Ook voor mij is dit de release van 2004. Maar white light white heat white trash is ronduit geniaal, rauw doch emotioneel, een omgeving waar de karakteristieke rauwe stem van Mike Ness goed tot zijn recht komt, zie bijvoorbeeld 'dear lover' of untitled.

Backyard Babies daarentegen was toch wel meer mijn ding moet ik zeggen! Goeie muzikanten, vette nummers en al met al een leuke show. Zeker een band om in de gaten te houden.
Naja, tijdens het zuipen en bands checken door tochmaar zitten twijfelen of ik een shirt ging halen (achteraf na de show gedaan). Tijdens het bekjken van de SxDx shirts viel het me op dat er op een van de shirts UK/EUROPEAN tour stond terwijl ze maar 1 fuckin dag in London spelen, daarna in Amsterdam en dan 30 keer in Duitsland for crying out loud! . Daarom maar eens met Clint (heette die geloof ik) de merch-man over gepraat. Aardige gast trouwens. Na een heel gesprek over Duitsers, Belgen en touren reageert hij nog op m'n Bad Religion shirt. Bleek dat hij ook zooi doet voor Interpol, de band waar ex-BRdrummer Bobby tegenwoordig ook het geluid voor regelt. Klein wereldje hehe. Naja, hem maar direct BR aangeraden. Nadat ie beloofde een shirt voor me te reserveren was het al gauw tijd voor DE band van vanavond... Social Distortion!
En dat was natuurlijk super! Mike Ness en co. bewezen maar weer dat ze ook live flink van muziek spelen afwisten. Hoewel het op een gegeven moment toch inkakte bij Social D (feit is dat het soms ook best zeiknummers zijn, maarja, tis fuckin Social D he. ) rockte het toch behoorlijk hard! Al met al een memorabele avond, blij dat ik ze gezien heb. Toch nog een leuke longsleeve kunnen scoren (30 eu wel duur trouwens, wat ik ook al zei tegen merch-man, maarja, ze verkochten toch merkte hij op, dus tja...) en op Pukkelpop ga ik ze uiteraard weer zien.

The band has remained silent three times and once broke up in 1985, due to frontman Ness' drug addiction. However, they reformed around 1987 and have continued being active today, especially after longtime guitarist Dennis Danell passed away from brain aneurysm in 2000. Since their inception the band lineup has been a virtual revolving-door of talent, with many members coming and going; however, Ness has remained.
So far, Social Distortion released six full-length studio albums, one compilation and live album and two DVDs. Their last album, Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll, came out on September 28, 2004 and is their first release with current guitarist Jonny "2 Bags" Wickersham, the replacement of the late Danell, who had played on all Social Distortion albums. The band has returned to the studio to record their seventh studio album and plan to release it sometime in 2007. There has also been some talk of an upcoming greatest hits compilation album.

One year later, Ness took on vocal duties in addition to lead guitar when Corvin left for graduate school, Dennis was moved to rhythm guitar, Brent Liles was brought in to play bass, with Derek O'Brien replacing Royer on drums. Mike and Dennis remained the only constant members for the next two decades, with bass and drums changing hands every few years.
The music was initially inspired equally by British punk like the Sex Pistols and classic acts such as The Rolling Stones. They began playing with fellow Orange County, California bands such as the Adolescents, China White, and Shattered Faith as part of the nascent hardcore movement. Their music was fast, angry and energetic. In 1982 the band embarked on their first national tour with fellow punk band, Youth Brigade. The trip was chronicled in the seminal punk rockumentary, Another State of Mind. The film was written, produced and directed by Peter Stuart and Adam Small (co-creator of "Mad TV").

The album included the title track as well as the song, "Another State of Mind," for which the documentary was named. Mike Ness mentions in his DVD commentary that he really had nowhere to stay when he got back to California so he would stay with whoever would have him. He plunged headfirst into serious drug addiction and ended up being strung out on heroin for weeks at a time. As a result of his escalating drug habit and troubles with the law, Social Distortion broke up in 1985. This resulted in an extended stint in a rehabilitation center, which would last for at least two years.
The band reformed in or around 1987 once Ness was clean. They released their second album, Prison Bound in the following year, over four years after their debut. The album included newcomers John Maurer on bass and Christopher Reece on drums. Prison Bound was not commercially successful, but the title track found airplay by the Los Angeles, California radio station, KROQ.
For Prison Bound, a notable style change takes place. While Mommy's Little Monster falls under the general category of punk rock or hardcore punk, Prison Bound takes on a definite country/western flavor and marks the start of the band's entrance into a style called "cowpunk." Country legend Johnny Cash and the Rolling Stones' honk tonk style became more prominent influences on Social Distortion's music at this time, with references to Cash and the Stones in the songs "Prison Bound" and "On My Nerves." For the Prison Bound album, Social Distortion also performs a cover of a Stones song titled "Backstreet Girl," which has a major key sound that foreshadows the more focused cowpunk sound of the later albums.
Taking time between albums became a pattern for Social D. Ness acknowledges in a 2003 interview that it is a little backward, marketing-wise, to play songs for the fans for a few years before recording them but it has always worked well for them. "We know which songs are going to be fan favorites on the record before we even record them." [1]
The album cover for Social Distortion (1990), one of the band's most successful and well known albums to date.Social Distortion left Restless Records and signed with Epic Records in 1989. Later that year, the band began recording their third album, simply titled Social Distortion, and released it in 1990. The album included the singles "Ball and Chain" and "Story of My Life" as well as a cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". The self-titled album is a prime example of Social Distortion's honed-in cowpunk style, a key factor in allowing Social Distortion to become more accessible to the masses.
Their fourth album, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, was released in 1992. The album included two hit singles "Bad Luck" and "When She Begins". After the release of the album, drummer Christopher Reece left Social Distortion in 1993 and was replaced by Randy Carr. He toured with the band and played drums on live performances until he left in 1995.
In 1995, Social Distortion released a compilation album, Mainliner: Wreckage From the Past, featuring pre-Mommy's Little Monster cuts. It contains two versions of "1945" and "Playpen" from their two indie labels 13th Floor and Posh Boy and also a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb".
In the summer of 1994, the band began recording sessions for their fifth album. [2] The album White Light, White Heat, White Trash, featuring session drummer Deen Castronovo, was released in 1996 and took on a harder sound than those preceding it. Former Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits joined the band between the recording and release of the album and is credited in the liner notes. The album included only one hit single "I Was Wrong", but was well received by critics. The album also included a re-recording of "Under My Thumb" as a hidden track.
The album cover for Live at the Roxy (1998), the band's only live recording to date.In 1997, Social Distortion left Epic Records and returned to Time Bomb Recordings for the first time in eight years. They released their first (and only) live album Live at the Roxy in 1998. Social Distortion went on hiatus again as Ness went solo releasing two albums, Cheating at Solitaire and one featuring song covers, Under the Influences in the following year.
Dennis Danell died on February 29, 2000 in his Newport Beach home after apparently suffering a brain aneurysm, now leaving Ness as the only remaining original member of the band. There have been some rumors claiming that the band broke up again, following his death. He was replaced by current guitarist Jonny Wickersham and Biscuits also left during that time and was replaced by Charlie Quintana.

There had been rumors of a follow-up to White Light, White Heat, White Trash to be released in the fall of 2000, but nothing surfaced. Since then, they had been promising to release it every year. The album, titled Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll, was finally released on September 28, 2004 and it would be their first release with current guitarist Jonny Wickersham and drummer Charlie Quintana. Before the release of the album long-time bassist John Maurer left the band to stay with his family and was replaced by Rancid's Matt Freeman. He stayed until late 2004 and was replaced by current bassist Brent Harding.
Social Distortion toured much of 2004, 2005 and 2006. They played with various bands, including Versus the World, TSAR, Shooter Jennings, I Hate Kate, Flogging Molly, Nine Black Alps, The Supersuckers, Blackpool Lights, The Lost City Angels, The Street Dogs, The Backyard Babies, The Hangmen, The Eyeliners, Cooper, Mest, Bullets and Octane, and The Dead 60's.
In February 2006, Ness was injured and broke his wrist in a skateboarding accident. He had his good friend, TSOL guitarist Ron Emory to fill his place on guitar for the tour while he continuing to sing for the band with his arm in a cast and sling. As of July 2006, Emory is no longer filling for Ness. The Hangmen's Bryan Small was also filling for Ness.
The band is rumoured to soon be recording a new studio album, which is due for release sometime in 2007.[3] The four confirmed songs that the band has played various at live shows, "I Won't Run No More", "Diamonds in the Rough", "Bakersfield" and "With Friends Like You, Who Needs Enemies", are likely to appear on this album.[4] "I Won't Run No More" has once been performed live in 2000-2001, which can be heard on the now-hard to find bootleg release Anaheim 2001.[5] The rest of the songs have been played at recent live shows. The new album will also mark the first Social Distortion release recorded without longtime bassist John Maurer since their first album, 1983's Mommy's Little Monster.
Social Distortion also plans to release a greatest hits album. Ness had this to say, "We hope to have a new Social Distortion record out, apart from the Greatest Hits

Ik vind trouwens het solo werk van Mike Ness zo mogelijk nog beter.
En dat het niet aanslaat bij een groot publiek komt door het nassale stemgeluid van Ness en het feit dat ze gewoon weg geen commerciele kutband zijn (zo zijn ze bijv uit sony gestapt naar een veel kleiner label, toen sony zich met hun muziek wilde bemoeien). Wie echt wil blijven (zeker in dit genre muziek), kan bijna niet doorbreken. Maar echte fans hebben ze genoeg
