BTW Kent iemand het programma "Schwingingen" dat tot een jaar of 10 geleden op WDR1 op donderdagavond van 22:00 tot 24:00 uitgezonden werd. Presentator Winfried Trenkler was iemand die zichzelf graag hoorde praten, maar ook bijzonder zinvolle informatie leverde over deze mannen. Via hem heeft IllOgical ze allemaal leren kennen, waarvoor dank.

Kraftwerk vind ik erg fijn, mijn pa heeft Autobahn op plaat en ik heb de cd's Die Mensch Maschine en een life cd. Verder moet ik TEE en Ralf + Flaurian nog eens gaan kopen. Neu! en La Düsseldorf ken ik ook, alhoewel niet zo goed. Andere namen zeiden me niks, behalve Klaus Schultze/Tangerine Dream. Timewind is een meesterlijk plaat.

En wat Brian Eno betreft: Inderdaad ook Krautrock, maar nog zo veel meer. Die man is zo eindeloos veelzijdig.

Beide zeer interessante cd's, vooral de eerste, omdat het Live-album wel leuk is, maar toch uit een veel latere periode stamt dan hun glorietijd, al zou je dat niet zeggen met de dolenthousiaste Japanner die de cd opent. "Jakakakakaka Amon Düül 2!!!!"

Ontzettend humoristisch en volkomen onverwacht is de uitvoering van La Paloma op het live-album. Ook gaat het hier en daar een beetje de metalkant op.

Een hele grote aanrader.

Can - Tago Mago, werd al genoemd in dit topic, die heb ik zelf ook pasgeleden gekocht en nog zeerzeker geen spijt van, want het is gewoon een zeer aparte en gave cd.

Verder vind ik NEU! werkelijk geniaal en luister ik ook graag naar bijvoorbeeld Schulze, TD en het oudere materiaal van Kraftwerk. Hun latere werk is inderdaad vrij oninteressant en weinig vernieuwend.

Krautrocksampler: One Head's Guide to the Great Kosmische Musik - 1968 Onwards, written by Julian Cope, is a book describing the underground music scene in Germany from 1968 through the 1970s. The book was published in the UK by Head Heritage, with the first edition in 1995. The book was later translated into German and French, but is now out of print with original copies exchanging hands for surprisingly large amounts.

The book gives a subjective and very animated account of the phenomenon of krautrock from the perspective of the former Teardrop Explodes singer: "I wrote this short history because of the way I feel about the music, that its supreme Magic & Power has lain Unrecognised for too long" (p. 1, orthographic quirks in the original).

Comprises a narrative of rock and roll culture in general in post-WWII West Germany, along with chapters focusing on individual major artists (Faust, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Amon Düül I and II, Timothy Leary and Ash Ra Tempel, and Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and the Cosmic Couriers. Also an annotated appendix of "50 Kosmische Classics." Some chapters appeared previously in the UK music magazine The Wire or in the German music magazine Spex.

Not exactly a wealth of information, so the only real truth comes in buying the record, taking it home and playing it. It took one spin to throw away my reservations. What you have here are some fascinating alternative versions of classic Malcolm Mooney-era Can and a couple of new songs. "Little Star Of Bethlehem", for instance, has some intriguing backing vocals with harmonies that wouldn't sound out of place on a Beach Boys record! "She Brings The Rain" is performed in a rawer, more stripped down version. "Outside My Door" and "Pnoom" sound completely different here.

Throughout the record, the sound quality is excellent and these are definitely not rough demos. Probably alternative takes or other parts of the jam sessions that were edited down for the finished studio versions. "Father Cannot Yell" definitely sounds like the later, with different lyrics and bass parts, it sounds like it could be part of the same take. The new tracks that end each side are both OK. Not as great as the other stuff, but still thorougly enjoyable. If you're a Can head and you've played your copies of "Monster Movie" and "Delay 1968" too many times for comfort, then this is an essential album.

The short-lived Xhol Caravan was one of the earliest underground Krautrock groups, and their unique fusion of jazz and rock was a precursor to the direction that Embryo, Out of Focus, Missus Beastly, Thirst Moon, Ikarus, Kraan, Vita Nova, Manju and countless other German groups would take in the 1970s. Formed by saxophonists Tim Belbe and Hansi Fischer, the group started out in 1967 under the name "Soul Caravan". With a Motown-influenced bassist as well as two African-American vocalists, James Rhodes and Ronny Swinton, the group made competent but conventional R&B and soul music, even doing covers of Sam & Dave. Later that same year they released the record Get in High on CBS. By 1968, after several lineup changes, their sound began to develop into a more distinct blend of psychedelic and progressive rock and free jazz, with a wide range of influences, including the Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, Vanilla Fudge, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Albert Ayler and Peter Brötzmann. Eventually the group coalesced with Belbe, Fischer, Rhodes, Klaus Briest on bass, Skip Vanwych on drums, and Ocki Brevert on organ. At a performance of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" guitarist Werner Funk joined the group on-stage and stayed with them until the next year. Their live shows often consisted of long free-form jams, with a lot of experimentation and improvisation and a heavily drug-influenced vibe. In early 1969 they changed their name to Xhol Caravan to release a single "Planet Earth"/"So Down" on the Hansa label and then later that year, after both Funk and Rhodes had departed, they released the strange and excellent LP Electrip, one of the earliest Krautrock albums, also on Hansa. Xhol Caravan were a popular group at the time, constantly gigging and playing festivals, and even appeared live on WDR Radio that year as well as on television with Frank Zappa, Tangerine Dream, and Amon Düül II. Fischer left the group before the end of the year, and the band eventually shortened their name to Xhol to avoid confusion with the British group Caravan. More studio and live material was recorded that year, though the group was unable to release any of it until they signed on with the legendary Ohr Records. In 1971 Ohr released the LP Hau-Ruck, taken from a couple live jams in early July 1970. The following year the LP Motherfuckers GMBH & Co KG came out, with both live and studio tracks, also recorded in 1970 and also on the Ohr label. Xhol unfortunately disbanded at about this time. In 2001 United Dairies released Motherfuckers Live, a two-CD set of live Xhol material from 1968 (when they were still Soul Caravan with James Rhodes on vocals) and 1969 as an instrumental four-piece.
