Indeed, since 2022, elections in Russia have redefined citizenship as support for the war.

Allemaal geen pretje, dat weet iedereen, maar naar verluidt zetten de Russen in op maar liefst zeven nieuwe units in Moskou waar gevangenen gehuisvest kunnen worden.

Mogelijk dat naar aanleiding van het grote conflict tussen de beide landen behalve Russen daar ook Oekraïnse gevangenen worden gehuisvest.

Over het verblijf daar werd het volgende gezegd: Konstantin Chuychenko beloofde ook dat deze nieuwe faciliteiten zouden zorgen voor betere arbeidsomstandigheden voor gevangenismedewerkers en voor toegang tot werk, onderwijs en medische zorg voor gedetineerden.

De Amerikaanse inlichtingendienst CIA heeft verschillende Europese regeringen gewaarschuwd dat Rusland een drone-aanval voorbereidt op Spanje, Frankrijk of Italië. Dat schrijft de Spaanse krant El Mundo donderdag. De krant baseert zich op een anonieme bron die dicht bij het Litouwse ministerie van Defensie staat, op diplomatieke bronnen en op defensieanalisten.

Volgens El Mundo zou Rusland drones van het type Gerbera verbergen in containers op koopvaardijschepen en ze vanaf zee lanceren. De drone is ongeveer 2 meter lang, heeft een spanwijdte van 2,5 meter en weegt tot 18 kilo.

Het opgegeven maximale bereik bedraagt 600 kilometer. Met 4 à 5 kilo springstof kan het toestel geen grote installaties vernietigen, maar het kan wel een brand veroorzaken of een haven of luchthaven tijdelijk lamleggen. Het beoogde effect zou vooral politiek en economisch zijn.

Litouwen en andere landen beschikken over de informatie sinds CIA-directeur John Ratcliffe op 25 augustus naar Moskou is gereisd. Volgens de krant zijn ook Spanje, Frankrijk en Italië ingelicht.

De drie landen houden in 2027 verkiezingen, ze zouden volgens El Mundo 'zwakke schakels' zijn omdat ze kampen met radicale partijen die de angst en de vermoeidheid over Oekraïne kunnen uitbuiten. De Britse analist Keir Giles waarschuwt dat de landen aan de frontlijn niet noodzakelijk het doelwit zijn. “Het doelwit ligt waar Europa het zwakst is”, zegt hij.

South of this, our troops have managed to secure positions on the outskirts of Orekhovtka (this information is outdated). The Ukrainian Armed Forces pushed us out of Orekhovtka and are also infiltrating the southern part of the "Rayka" area... That's a more accurate picture.

​EU members' current plans "do not seem to meet" the goal of filling gaps in ​areas such as air and missile defence, ground combat, naval forces, munition stockpiles ⁠and drones, the European Defence Agency said in its first annual Defence Readiness Report.

“Tackling the challenges ​of a contested and deteriorating security environment and the threat posed by Russia’s aggression requires moving ​further and substantially faster than now to reach defence readiness by 2030,” the EU agency wrote.

ACHIEVEMENTS UNPRECEDENTED BUT 'NOT YET ENOUGH'

Leaders from the EU’s 27 countries ordered the report last year to assess progress in their drive to ramp up ​Europe's defences, reflecting fears fuelled by Russia’s war in Ukraine and calls by US President Donald Trump ​for Europe to do more for its own security.

Trump has also threatened to withdraw from the NATO alliance ‌that ⁠has been the bedrock of European security for decades, although he recommitted to its mutual defence clause at a summit in Ankara in July.

Russia has denied it has any intention of attacking an EU member and accused the continent's leaders of fearmongering. But EU leaders have dismissed Moscow's assertions, ​pointing out it made ​similar comments before its ⁠2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Against such an uncertain international backdrop, EU leaders last year set themselves the goal of making Europe ready to defend itself ​by 2030.

EU defence ministers are expected to discuss the defence agency's report ​in Brussels ⁠on Monday and it will then go to the bloc's leaders.

“The first Annual Defence Readiness Report shows progress in spending, capability development, and industrial readiness, supported by deepened partnerships, notably with Ukraine,” the summary ⁠seen by ​Reuters said.

“However, the current momentum and increased investment do ​not yet translate into sufficiently deployable, sustainable and interoperable forces, while critical capability gaps remain. What has been achieved so ​far, although unprecedented, is not yet enough.”
