De ontslagen volgen op de pogingen van de Trump-regering om de regels voor stemmen per post te wijzigen en op onderzoeken naar de uitslag van de verkiezingen van 2020, die Trump verloor van Democraat Joe Biden.
De commissie heeft nu geen zittende leden meer. ,,Het is onverantwoordelijk en gevaarlijk dat deze regering vastbesloten blijft om chaos te veroorzaken voor de verkiezingsfunctionarissen in dit land", zo reageerde de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken van Arizona, Adrian Fontes. ,,Deze stap ondermijnt de integriteit van een onpartijdige verkiezingsadministratie."
Een wet uit 2002 bepaalt dat de president vervangers voor de commissie kan benoemen. Het is nog onduidelijk hoe Trump de commissie in de toekomst wil gaan vormgeven.
