Naar daarom kun je een term zoals 'fascisme' beter mijden, omdat bepaalde figuren dan meteen in de gordijnen schieten. Die denken bij fascist meteen aan zwart- en/of bruinhemden die mensen op straat in elkaar rammen, een leider die oreert voor mensenmassa's en een totaal verbod op vrijheid van meningsuiting.
Wat dat betreft dekt autocratie inderdaad beter de lading. En daarin verschilt Trump - zeker qua intenties - nauwelijks van de Poetins en Erdogans van deze wereld.
Overigens, over Vance in Groenland: Wat een ontzettende domheid daar ook weer door een heel eiland te bedreigen met overname, waarbij 'geweld niet uitgesloten wordt' en dan te beweren dat Groenland veiliger is als het zich aansluit bij de VS. Dit riekt naar pure 'beschermgeld'-achtige praktijken.

Vance zei dat hij niet denkt "dat de VS ooit militaire slagkracht hoeft in te zetten", maar dat hij geloofde dat Trump een deal met Groenland kan sluiten. Terwijl Vance in Groenland was, zei Trump tegen verslaggevers in het Witte Huis dat de VS Groenland nodig heeft om "de vrede in de hele wereld" te waarborgen. Hij zei dat in de Groenlandse wateren "overal Chinese en Russische schepen" zijn en dat de VS niet vertrouwt op Denemarken of andere partijen om de situatie aan te pakken.
Eerder op de dag werd op Groenland een nieuwe regeringscoalitie gepresenteerd, die voorlopig de banden met Denemarken wil behouden. De nieuwe premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen vond dat het bezoek van de VS een "gebrek aan respect" liet zien. Hij riep daarbij om eensgezindheid tegen "druk van buitenaf".
Experts noemden het onuitgenodigde bezoek van Vance aan Groenland in gesprek met NU.nl eerder al provocerend en een "Amerikaanse powerplay".
Lekker ventje is het toch. Overigens standaard fascistische tactiek, lekker verdeeldheid zaaien en beweren dat het Vaterland hen wel zal beschermen. Mussolini flikte het al in Noord Afrika en nazi-Duitsland in Sudetenland en Oostenrijk.
