Blow to Zelensky as breakthrough is confirmed by sources from both sides with one blogger saying Kyiv forces risk encirclement

Russian soldiers have punched through Ukrainian lines in Russia’s Kursk region only a day after a US official said Kyiv could hold the territory for months.

Sources from both sides confirmed the Russian breakthrough, which occurred during the heaviest fighting on Russian territory since Ukraine began its cross-border incursion in August.

DeepState, a Ukrainian military blogger, said that there was a risk that Russian forces could encircle Ukrainian forces, although they later said that the front lines in Kursk were “difficult but under control”.

“The enemy pushed through the left flank of the Kursk grouping of Ukrainian defence forces,” the blogger said. “We are on the verge of another mess due to the repetition of mistakes.”

Rybar, a Russian military Telegram channel, said that Russian forces were producing tangible results in several sectors.

A video posted on Russian Telegram channels under the title “Announcement from the 155th Guards Brigade of the Pacific Fleet” showed badly injured Ukrainian soldiers with blood running down their faces tied to chairs in what appears to be a basement, and then the bodies of dozens of dead Ukrainian infantrymen lying in a piece of sparse woodland.

It was not possible to authenticate the video, although Russian military bloggers said that marines from the Pacific Fleet’s 155th Guards Brigade had been involved in fighting around the Glushkovsky district of Kursk, where most Ukrainian forces had allegedly been overrun.

“Ukrainian forces are only still present in a gully... as well as a small triangle of forest south of the railway,” Rybar said. The Glushkovsky district lies to the west of Sudzha, a Russian town under Ukrainian control.

Russian advances in the Kursk region will be a major blow to Kyiv, which had held up its invasion – the first invasion of Russia since World War II – as a strategic masterstroke.

Volodymyr Zelensky has said the Kursk operation would be a key point of his “victory plan”, which he presented to Sir Keir Starmer and Mark Rutte, the new Nato secretary general, on Thursday.

The Ukrainian president has also said that the Kursk incursion, which at its high point included about 100 settlements stretched over 500 sq miles of land around the town of Sudzha, would draw Russian soldiers away from the front line in Donbas.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief of the armed forces, appeared to back up this analysis when he said on Thursday that Russia had diverted 50,000 soldiers from Donbas to Kursk.

However, many commentators were less convinced and said that the Kursk ruse had failed because the Kremlin had increased the tempo of its attacks along the Donbas front.

“Russian progress actually picked up after Kursk,” said John Foreman, a former British military attaché in both Moscow and Kyiv. “Politically, the Kursk offensive didn’t change much in Washington DC or Europe. I’m still unconvinced of its strategic merit.”

Ukrainian officials had hoped that the invasion of Russia would impress their allies, who would agree to increase weapon supplies and allow Western missiles to be fired at targets in Russia.

But last month Joe Biden, the US president, turned down Ukraine’s request for a licence to expand missile strikes into Russia, which Mr Zelensky had said was critical for securing the Kursk salient. US officials also dismissed Ukraine’s “victory plan” as a glorified weapons wish list.

Sir Keir Starmer did not lift restrictions on Ukraine using UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles for strikes in Russia after meeting Mr Zelenksy on Thursday.

On the Donbas front, Russian forces have been accelerating their advances with the capture of the Ukrainian fortress town of Vuhledar last week and attacks on the strategically critical town of Toretsk this week, but Russia’s successes in Kursk appear to have come as a surprise to Ukraine and the US.
