The U.S. and German officials have repeatedly said that they do not support or encourage Kyiv's strikes with their weapons on Russian soil, reportedly due to fears this would lead to an escalation of the war.

In May, soldiers of the 92nd ‘Ivan Sirko’ Assault Brigade hit hundreds of targets in the Kharkiv region with drones.

The brigade’s drone operators reported that at least 557 targets were hit.

To detect and destroy targets, the brigade involves aerial reconnaissance men of the Attack Drone Group “Flight Club”, the Attack Drone Battalion “Achilles”, and other units with attack drones.

According to published data, 141 units of equipment were damaged, and another 45 units of equipment were completely destroyed.

The military noted that armored vehicles were used more intensively in Bakhmut during the assault than in the Kharkiv region.

The Russians have turned a Japanese demilitarized Toyota HMV SUV into a mobile firing platform with a ZU-23-2.

The Russian Ministry of Defense published the video of the equipment.

The video shows that the firing platform includes a portable electronic warfare device in addition to the 23-mm anti-aircraft gun.

So, obviously, the platform is primarily designed to counter drones. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense also writes about the use of the system against Ukrainian infantry.

This platform is reportedly being used by Russian occupation forces near the village of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region.

As Russia’s Armored Vehicles Get Worse, Ukraine’s American-Made M-2s Destroy Them Faster
Thirteen-ton Russian MT-LBs are no match for 34-ton Ukrainian M-2s.


In 28 months of hard fighting, Russia’s military has lost around 4,000 armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles—the two types of armored vehicle that haul troops into battle. That’s around 150 destroyed Russian APCs and more-heavily-armed IFVs a month, on average, that the analysts at Oryx have visually confirmed.

Ukrainian losses are much lower: around a thousand APCs and IFVs since Russia widened its war on Ukraine in February 2022.

Last month, Russian losses spiked—to a staggering 288 APCs and IFVs, according to analyst Andrew Perpetua, who also tallies vehicle losses in Ukraine. “This is only what we could see and count,” Perpetua stressed.

It’s apparent what’s happening. Around the ruins of the eastern city of Avdiivka, one of the most violent sectors of the 700-mile front line in Ukraine, the Ukrainians are deploying better vehicles, while the Russians are deploying worse ones. When the Ukrainian and Russian vehicles clash, the Russians get beaten—badly.

A pair of videos that circulated on social media over the past month graphically illustrate the vehicular imbalance. In both cases, Ukraine’s American-made M-2 Bradley IFVs took on Russian APCs—and demolished them. Potentially dozens of Russians died in the two skirmishes.

In the first fight, on or just before May 2, one of Russia’s aging MT-LB armored tractors—pulled out of long-term storage and fitted with cage armor to deflect explosive drones—speeds toward Ukrainian lines west of Avdiivka with around half a dozen infantry riding on top. An M-2—one of more than 300 of the 1990s-vintage vehicles the United States has donated to Ukraine—rolls out to meet it.

It’s an unfair contest. The 13-ton MT-LB was designed to be a support vehicle. With its thin armor and lack of heavy armament for its two crew, it was never meant to carry troops directly into battle. But after losing thousands of heavier BMP IFVs, the Russians had no choice but to press the tracked tractors into front-line service as APCs.

By contrast, the 34-ton M-2 was designed for direct combat. It’s got an accurate and fast-firing 25-millimeter auto-cannon and effective armor for its passengers and crew.

In the video, the M-2’s three crew detect the MT-LB and open fire. The Russian infantry leap off their MT-LB right before the Bradley’s 25-millimeter rounds chew up the vulnerable tractor. “M-2 Bradley shows how it’s done,” the Ukrainian defense ministry boasted.

A month later on or around Sunday, something similar happened. Two Russian BTR-82 wheeled APCs rolled toward Ukrainian lines outside Avdiivka, dozens of infantry sheltering under their anti-drone cages.

The 15-ton BTR-82 is newer than the MT-LB, and more heavily armed—but nearly as vulnerable in a direct fight with a tracked M-2. A Ukrainian drone spotted the BTRs, an M-2 took up an advantageous position for an ambush and, when the Russian vehicles rolled into an open area devoid of cover, the M-2 crew opened fire.

In the video of the engagement, the 25-millimeter rounds slice into the infantry riding on top of the BTRs. Something cooks off on one of the vehicles—a smoke grenade, perhaps—sending bodies flying. Survivors scatter as the M-2 peppers the BTRs and the infantry cower in shell craters.

“We demonstrate once again that only modern technologies and skillful use of American equipment are a significant advantage on the battlefield,” the 47th Mechanized Brigade stated on one of its social-media accounts.

It’s true. Since getting its first of more than 300 M-2s starting early last year, the Ukrainians have lost around 40 of the vehicles. The average loss rate—around two Bradleys a month—has remained steady as the Ukrainians have gained experience with the type.

So far, the 47th Mechanized Brigade is the only Ukrainian operator of M-2s. But after getting a fresh batch of a hundred or so of the vehicles last month, the general staff in Kyiv might be able to equip a second brigade. That would double the number of sectors where Ukraine could have a vehicular advantage over Russia.

And there’s no reason the Americans can’t send a lot more M-2s. The U.S. Army no longer uses the model of the Bradley that Ukraine uses—and there should be around a thousand of them sitting in the Army’s sprawling storage sites, including one in California currently holding around 500 of the vehicles.

To counter the aerial assault, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units of the Air Force, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine’s Defense Forces were deployed.

"As a result of the anti-air battle, 22 Shaheds were shot down over the Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Poltava regions," Oleshchuk added.

Russian drone attack on Ukraine
On the evening of June 4, alarms were sounded in several regions of Ukraine. According to the Air Force, there was a threat of strike drones in the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions.

Air defenses were active in five regions of Ukraine, mostly in the south. According to the regional military administrations, four drones were shot down in the Dnipropetrovsk region: two in the Kryvyi Rih district and one each in the Dnipro and Nikopol districts. Six Russian drones were downed in the Mykolayiv region.

Previously, the downing of a Shahed drone was reported by the Ukrainian Navy.

Moldova’s former Chief of the General Staff worked for Russia

Russian intelligence recruited Moldova’s former Chief of General Staff, who worked until the end of 2021 and wanted Russia to invade the country.

The Insider has gained access to the Telegram correspondence between Igor Gorgan, former Chief of the General Staff of Moldova, and his GRU handler, Russian Colonel Alexei Makarov.

Gorgan regularly reported to Makarov on Moldova’s domestic political situation and provided information on visits from Ukrainian Ministry of Defense representatives, who came to Moldova to purchase military equipment and ammunition.

Gorgan served in the General Staff until late 2021, when the country’s new president Maia Sandu requested his resignation.

Before the July 2023 mass expulsion of Russian spies working in Moldova under diplomatic cover in Moldova, Gorgan even managed to secure a job at the UN.

“Leveraging his remaining connections in the Moldovan Defense Ministry, Gorgan continues to be a key GRU informant,” the publication said.

Igor Gorgan and Alexei Makarov started particularly active communication in April 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The confidential meetings mostly took place in Chișinău cafes or on a fishing trip:

“I can meet anyone, I am a man of action, we need to move forward faster! We should go fishing and talk about everything! We’re living in historic times! And we have to make this history!” one of the messages from the Moldovan general reads.

According to these reports, Russia was particularly interested in what kind of weapons Kyiv was buying from neighboring countries, particularly Moldova. General Gorgan immediately reported:

“Ukraine’s [state defense exporter] Ukroboronexport is trying to buy back (or take with the help of ‘partners’) six Mig-29s from Moldova, which are in Mărculești. They insist very strongly… So far, the airplanes are in place. They want to ‘pull off’ the operation through a front company from the United Arab Emirates in the near future.” the spy reported to the handler.

Gorgan sent another message on the same day: “Railroad trains with fuel are coming from the territory of Moldova, namely from the village of Etulia to the Ukrainian settlement of Reni. The train with fuel moves only at night, during the day, it stands still not to become a target of the Russian Aerospace Forces.”

Another message to the handler followed soon after: “The Ukrainians have been walking around our Ministry of Defense for three weeks asking for everything — artillery shells in particular.”

Agent Gorgan was also restless about arms deliveries to Ukraine via Romania. Here’s the advice he gave to Colonel Makarov: “It’s essential to close the border with Romania as soon as possible! It’s a big hole! A lot of cargo comes to Ukraine from there. Especially military cargo! The Romanians still have some military factories that produce weapons and ammunition.”

Moldovan investigative journalists who specialize in Russian espionage have repeatedly spotted General Gorgan at the Russian embassy in Chișinău, and once during a confidential meeting with Makarov.

According to the correspondence, the spy and the handler developed quite friendly relations.

Meanwhile, he constantly bombarded Makarov with messages that everything in Moldova was ready for the deployment of Russian troops:

“We urgently need to cleanse the country of all fascist scum! Many are ready. Pass it on… The time has come. I keep the whole situation in the army under control… Here, to my joy, there is no ‘Azov’ or other formations, and we will deal with the politicians quickly.”

Prior to the mass expulsion of Russian diplomats from Moldova in July 2023, Gorgan ceased communication and secured a job at the UNHCR-Moldova office in Chișinău.

Handlers from the Russian Federation
It was not possible to find out exactly when Gorgan contacted the Russian intelligence agent and offered his services.

The Insider’s military intelligence source suggested that active contacts most likely began in 2004 when Gorgan served in a NATO mission.

At least it is reported that before Colonel Makarov, he had an agent contact with Vadim Ukhnalev, the Russian military attach� in Chișinău.

Colonel Ukhnalev currently holds the position of military attach� in Kazakhstan, where he “has established active contacts among the military leadership.”

After Ukhnalev left, Gorgan was supervised by another military attach�, Igor Dovbnya.

The Insider has a recording of a phone conversation between Gorgan and Dovbnya, where they agreed to meet and “discuss everything” near the memorial to the fallen Afghan soldiers in Chișinău.

In 2017, Dovbnya was expelled from Moldova for espionage. Now, the Russian spy is the head of the Russian military attach� office in Kyrgyzstan.

To recap, in 2023, Moldova called Russia a threat to its national security, which wants to eliminate the country’s statehood.

Russia fears ahead of Belgium's double EU and national elections
Two leading Belgian parties have hit back at allegations they were Russia-friendly, as the EU host-state prepares for double elections.

MEPs from the rightwing Flemish NVA party and the far-left PVDA party told EUobserver they fully aligned with mainstream Western views condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The NVA's Assita Kanko, an MEP, said on Monday (3 June): "There is absolutely no connection between the Russian regime and my political party or our candidates. We fully support Ukraine".

"Two weeks ago, I met a delegation of Ukrainian mothers in the European Parliament. I heard their stories and saw their tears, felt their pain," she added.

Marc Botenga, an MEP from PVDA, said the Russia allegations were "preposterous".

The PVDA had opposed Russian president Vladimir Putin's regime for over 20 years due to its greed and "barbarity", Botenga said.

"We firmly condemned Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine from day one ... Russia must stop its invasion and withdraw all its troops," he added.

The allegations of undue “Russian influence” in Belgium’s Flemish political scene were chronicled in a 37-page dossier circulated on Monday by a Belgian politician of Ukrainian origin, Marta Barandiy, who is running to become an MEP.

But the NVA’s Kanko said her party would never join the same group as Vlaams Belang in the EU Parliament: “No. This point about my party is disinformation”.

And the PVDA’s Botenga said it was an “attempt to criminalise” his party’s authentic views, for instance on the need for Russia-Ukraine peace talks.

Vlaams Belang didn’t reply to EUobserver.

Vlaams Belang and the NVA have three MEPs each in the current EU Parliament while PVDA has one, with polls indicating a similar outcome in the EU election on Sunday (9 June).

Twin elections
Belgium, the symbolic host-state of the EU institutions, is also holding national elections on the same day, in which Vlaams Belang, the NVA, and PVDA are expected to come out as three of the biggest winners.

Barandiy’s new anti-establishment party, Voor U, isn’t on the radar.

Meanwhile, Belgium’s current government, led by Flemish liberal Alexander De Croo, has also highlighted the Russian menace in the run-up to the votes.

On 12 April, De Croo personally announced a judicial probe into allegations Russia had bribed far-right MEPs, prompting police raids in the EU Parliament in Brussels on 29 May.

Belgium has expelled dozens of Russian spies working in its embassies and consulates in Brussels and Antwerp in the past two years.

"We are exercising caution about foreign interference when it comes to this [EU election] campaign”, a contact in the Belgian authorities told this website.

"Belgium has expelled about 60 Russian diplomats,” Belgium’s homeland intelligence service, the VSSE, said.

Hungary's Ukraine veto
And also on Monday, Belgian foreign minister Hadja Lahbib laid into the Moscow-friendly Hungary, after it once again vetoed EU money for Ukraine.

Hungary should be stripped of its voting rights in the EU Council due to prime minister Viktor Orb�n's illiberal rule at home and due to his "veto attitude", she told the Politico news website.

Lahbib's call saw Hungarian foreign minister P�ter Szijj�rt� fire back on social-media platform X that she "wants to silence pro-peace Hungary," echoing the PVDA's line in Belgium.

The EU initiated a sanctions procedure against Hungary in 2018 under Article 7 of the EU Treaty on breach of basic values, with the EU Council to discuss the state of play on 25 June - one week before Budapest takes over the EU presidency until 2025.

The Austrian foreign ministry told Politico it backed Habib, but despite the public pressure on Orb�n, there was no real plan afoot to advance Article 7 at the upcoming meeting or to block Hungary's EU red-carpet moment, a Belgian source told EUobserver.

And looking at the wider picture, Barandiy, the Belgian MEP-hopeful, whose NGO, Promote Ukraine, has held weekly protests outside Russia’s EU embassy in Brussels, said she was “worried”.

“All at the same time: the far right taking over the European Parliament and national parliaments, the Hungarian EU presidency, and Trump might be elected in the US,” she said, referring to Putin-friendly former US president Donald Trump.

“I’m afraid Ukraine might be pushed into negotiations by the end of the year,” she said, referring to potential capitulations to Russia.

Barandiy previously told EUobserver how she feared a break-in at her Brussels office was the work of "Russian forces."

Belarusian hackers target Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence in new espionage campaign
Belarusian state-sponsored hackers targeted Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence and a military base in a new cyberespionage operation, researchers say.

They attributed the attacks to the threat actor Ghostwriter, a Belarus-linked group known for its attacks on Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland. In the latest campaign, observed in April by researchers at the cybersecurity firm Cyble, the hackers sent their targets phishing emails with an attachment that contained drone image files and a malicious Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Researchers said they identified alleged victims based on the content of lure documents.

Ghostwriter, also tracked as UNC1151 and Storm-0257, has been active since at least 2017. It has previously targeted Ukrainian military personnel and Polish government services. The group mostly carries out phishing operations that steal email login credentials, compromise websites, and distribute malware.

Researchers at Cyble said that Ghostwriter is persistently targeting Ukraine and keeps updating its techniques to evade detection. In the latest campaigns, the group’s primary motivation likely was to steal information and gain remote access to infected systems.

Also on Tuesday, Ukraine’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-UA) warned about cyberattacks against Ukrainian military personnel and defense services using DarkCrystal malware, which could allow attackers to gain remote access to the victim’s device.

The threat actor tracked as UAC-0200 used the Signal messaging app to deliver malicious files to its victims. The hackers posed as people the targeted users might know to make their messages seem more trustworthy.

According to CERT-UA, the cybercriminals sent their victims an archive and a password to access it, urging them to open it on their computers only.

The number of incidents against Ukraine has been growing steadily over the past two years, and hackers are getting better at targeting, CERT-UA said in a report released in May.

They exploit the latest vulnerabilities and align their attacks with trending events and news to “increase the attention and potential complacency of targets. The Ukrainian military, as well as the country’s critical infrastructure, are among the hackers’ most frequent targets, according to the report.

Russian soldier who killed 7 comrades with grenade given 23-year sentence
A Russian soldier was sentenced to 23 years in a maximum security penal colony by a military court on Wednesday for killing seven soldiers from another unit when he threw a grenade into an army barrack, state news agency TASS reported.

Dmitry Lobovikov, a sergeant from the Sverdlovsk region in the Urals, was found guilty of multiple counts of murder, illegal possession of explosive devices and the deliberate destruction of property by explosion. He was also fined 70,000 rubles (�700) and stripped of his military rank.

A heavily intoxicated Lobovikov threw a grenade into a barrack in Russia’s Belgorod region in January 2023, after allegedly attempting to reprimand the troops for their poor behaviour, state-affiliated daily RBC reported.

The grenade detonated flammable gas cylinders, killing seven people and injuring 16 others.

At the trial, Lobovikov’s lawyers requested the court acquit their client of all charges, claiming that he had had no intention of killing his comrades, blaming the incident on “stupidity and alcohol”.

Lobovikov’s lawyers argued that the grenade had slipped out of their client’s hands when he lost consciousness after mixing sedatives with alcohol. While the jury ultimately found him guilty, they did also note that he was “deserving of leniency”.

A man of Ukrainian and Russian nationality, originally from Russian-speaking Donbass, was arrested in Roissy-en-France (Val-d'Oise) on Monday June 3, BFMTV learned from a source close to the matter, confirming information from JDD . The man, aged 26, was treated with serious burns around 4:30 p.m., after having made an explosive, and transported to a hospital center.

The first findings made it possible to discover on site products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, specifies the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office to BFMTV. One of them having exploded. The hotel had to be evacuated.

Anti-terrorism prosecution seized
The explosives were designed using an old method which consists of connecting them to a telephone to trigger them with a telephone call, corroborating sources tell BFMTV. Several passports were found on site.

Kyiv is increasingly frustrated by the limited training pipeline. The U.S. says it has other customers.

Ukrainian officials are pressing the U.S. and other countries to ramp up their F-16 pilot training, saying the current pipeline isn’t producing enough aviators to fly the jets that will be soon donated to Kyiv.

Ukraine says it has 30 pilots who are eligible to start training in the U.S. immediately. Yet the Biden administration has told Kyiv it lacks the school seats in its Arizona-based program to accept more than 12 pilot trainees at a time, according to three people with direct knowledge of the request. Two other facilities in Denmark and Romania have a similar issue with available training spots.

It’s the latest hurdle in the drawn-out effort to get modern F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Kyiv began pushing for the aircraft in the months following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, but was repeatedly rebuffed by the Biden administration. In May 2023, President Joe Biden greenlit other countries’ requests to send their F-16s, but logistical challenges repeatedly delayed the training. Further complicating the effort, it took months for Western countries to agree to send their own aircraft to Ukraine.

Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium plan to ship more than 60 U.S.-made F-16 jets to Kyiv this summer. Yet the U.S. has said it does not expect the jets to be a game-changer on the battlefield.

This story is based on interviews with eight former and current U.S., Ukrainian and European officials and lawmakers, many of whom were granted anonymity to speak about sensitive diplomatic conversations.

In a series of meetings and calls over the last several weeks, Ukraine has officially requested the U.S. train the additional pilots at Morris Air National Guard base in Tucson, Arizona. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) and Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee, have also pressed the administration to approve the additional training. The pair, along with several other lawmakers, wrote the Pentagon a letter last month asking the administration to prioritize the issue.

But the U.S. has told the Ukrainian military that in addition to limited space, other countries are in line for F-16 training at the base and that it cannot break its commitments to those nations.

“We understand they don’t want to break those contracts, but they could move their American pilots to a different base for training,” said Sasha Ustinova, a Ukrainian lawmaker who has advocated for the training.

The National Guard is planning to train 12 Ukrainian pilots total by the end of September at the Tucson location, according to Air Force spokesperson Laurel Falls. Aside from Arizona, the training facility in Denmark also has limited space and is preparing to shutter in November. A third program, which is located in Romania and will be run by contractors, is not yet up and running.

“Dozens” of pilots from several countries are conducting basic flight training and F-16 training in the U.S. and Europe, said Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Charlie Dietz, declining to confirm specific numbers.

“We have developed and are implementing a training plan that meets forecasted aircraft fielding timelines, which are ultimately shaped by a number of factors, including maintenance and sustainment needs, infrastructure and support equipment requirements, and aircraft sourcing timelines, as well as pilot throughput,” Dietz said.

Maj. Erin Hannigan, a spokesperson for the Arizona National Guard, confirmed that space in the program is limited due to commitments to other countries’ training requests, funding and the completion by potential students of English language requirements.

“On top of the Ukrainian students, there are multiple other countries that have reserved training throughout the year,” Hannigan said. “The number of foreign student pilots and where they come from is not determined by our schoolhouse, there are many other factors that play a part in the numbers such as funding, country requests, graduation of students from English learning and allotment.”

The Air Force also trains F-16 pilots at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, but those programs also have limited spaces for international students. Those spots are typically reserved well in advance for pilots from other countries that operate the F-16.

Another eight Ukrainian pilots are being trained in Denmark, according to a former DOD official involved in the program. But that facility is set to close next year and will no longer participate in the training, as Denmark’s Air Force transitions to the stealthy F-35.

Meanwhile, F-16-maker Lockheed Martin and its subcontractor, Draken, are also preparing to train pilots at a facility in Romania, but that program is expensive and also will have limited spots, according to the former official and a person familiar with the program. A Lockheed spokesperson referred questions about the Romania facility to the governments of the U.S., Romania and the Netherlands.

A total of 20 Ukrainian F-16 pilots are expected to graduate by the end of this year — half of the 40 needed to operate a full squadron of 20 jets, according to the former DOD official. Eight new pilots are scheduled to begin training in Romania, and eight more will soon arrive in Tucson, the former official said. The facility in Denmark will not accept any additional pilots.

Among the training facilities, only four slots will be open for Ukrainian pilots through the remainder of the year, according to the person familiar.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials have warned for months that the F-16 will not make a huge difference on the battlefield for Ukraine.

While the jets “will give the Ukrainians an increment of capability that they don’t have right now … it’s not going to be a dramatic game-changer as far as I’m concerned for their total military capabilities,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said last year.

In the Kharkiv area, for example, one U.S. official said Ukraine will not be able to fly the jets to the border with Russia or into Russian territory, because Moscow’s air defense systems will easily spot them and shoot them down.

But officials involved in the program said the aircraft will still provide a significant advantage for Kyiv, eventually. When Ukraine initially gets its F-16s and pilots, they will likely be able to fly only limited missions, for example, against drones and cruise missiles on the front lines, the former DOD official said. Once they get a full squadron worth of aircraft and pilots, it’s “completely realistic” to fly the F-16s to the border and shoot into Russia given the jet’s radar, targeting system and missiles — all of which are superior to Ukraine’s Soviet-era fleet.

But at this rate, Ukraine won’t have a full squadron of trained pilots until the end of 2025, the former official said.

Another issue is the weapons the planes will be carrying.

Ukrainians plan to use the jets to knock down Russian cruise and ballistic missiles fired toward Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian targets.

Those missions require precise air-to-air missiles that belong to the U.S. and dozens of NATO allies. Many of those countries are hesitant to part with their expensive weapons, one NATO official said.

The production capacity for the AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missile, made by RTX, has increased from around 500-800 per year to over 1,000, company officials said last year, in order to keep with demand. Ukraine has already used an older version of the missile with the ground-based National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System to hit Russian missiles.

But the worry from capitals is that the new requests from Kyiv could begin to put a strain on countries’ stocks, and talks among alliance members are looking at who might be able to part with their missiles, and how many, and when, the official said.

The United States and Germany recently authorized Ukraine to hit some targets on Russian soil with the long-range weapons they are supplying to Kyiv.

On Wednesday, a Western official and a U.S. senator said Ukraine has used U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia under newly approved guidance from President Joe Biden that allows American arms to be used for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Putin claimed that using some Western-supplied weapons involves military personnel of those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets, and therefore he said Moscow could take “asymmetrical” steps elsewhere in the world. The U.S. military said it does not control the missiles it provides to Ukraine or the targets.

“If they consider it possible to deliver such weapons to the combat zone to launch strikes on our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same type to some regions of the world where they can be used to launch strikes on sensitive facilities of the countries that do it to Russia?” he said.

“We will think about it,” he told the journalists on the sidelines of the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Asked whether Russia could resort to using nuclear arms, Putin said the conditions for utilizing that arsenal are clearly spelled out in Moscow’s security doctrine.

“For some reason, they believe in the West that Russia will never use it,” he said.

“Look at what is written there,” he said of Russia’s nuclear doctrine. “If somebody’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal.”

Even Russia’s battlefield nuclear weapons are much more powerful than what the U.S. used against Japan in World War II, Putin said.

Speaking to senior news leaders of international news agencies, including The Associated Press, for more than three hours, Putin also said nothing will change in terms of Russia-U.S. relations regardless of whether Biden or Donald Trump wins the American presidential election in November.

“We will work with any president the American people elect,” Putin said.

“I say absolutely sincerely, I wouldn’t say that we believe that after the election something will change on the Russian track in the American politics,” he added. “We don’t think so. We think nothing that serious will happen.”

Putin also said Trump’s felony conviction at his hush money trial last week was the result of “the use of the court system as part of the internal political struggle.”

The Russian leader faced questions on various topics, although the more than two years of fighting in Ukraine dominated the session.

Putin claimed the West had opportunities to end the fighting in Ukraine but did not act on them, citing a letter he once supposedly wrote to Biden that said hostilities could end in two or three months if Washington stopped supplying Kyiv with weapons.

Asked about Russian military losses, Putin said that no country would reveal that information during hostilities but claimed without providing details that Ukraine’s casualties are five times greater than Russia’s.

He also said Ukraine has more than 1,300 Russian troops in captivity, while more than 6,400 Ukrainian soldiers are being held in Russia.

The claims could not be independently verified and some Western estimates put Russia’s losses much higher than Ukraine’s.

Asked by AP about the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Putin said the U.S. is “taking energetic steps” to secure his release. Gershkovich was jailed over a year ago while on a reporting trip and charged with espionage. The journalist, his employer and the U.S. have denied the allegations, and Washington has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

Putin said that any such releases “aren’t decided via mass media” but through a “discreet, calm and professional approach.”

“And they certainly should be decided only on the basis of reciprocity,” he added, an allusion to a potential prisoner swap.

Putin has used the St. Petersburg forum as a showcase for touting Russia’s development and seeking investors. The meeting with journalists took place in Gazprom’s new global headquarters, a needle-shaped 81-story skyscraper overlooking the Gulf of Finland.

While meetings with journalists were part of previous sessions, he has not taken questions from Western journalists at the St. Petersburg event since sending troops to Ukraine.

Last year, journalists from countries that Russia regards as unfriendly — including the U.S., the U.K. and the European Union — were not invited, and Western officials and investors also steered clear of the session after wide-ranging sanctions were imposed on Moscow over Ukraine.

Russian streamer Anna Bazhutova, known on Twitch as Yokobovich, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for livestreaming witness accounts of alleged atrocities committed by the Russian army during its occupation of the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

French news agency AFP, via the Moscow Times, says Bazhutova was found guilty of spreading false information about the Russian army on her Twitch channel. The live broadcast originally occurred in June 2023, according to the report (although other sources, including Radio Free Europe, say the incident took place in 2022), and included witness accounts of massacres carried out by Russian forces. The government of Ukraine has made similar allegations of mass killings conducted by withdrawing Russian forces that left hundreds dead; Russia has rejected the claims and said evidence of the massacres was "staged" by the West.

At some point after Bazhutova's stream, Russian bloggers supporting the war filed complaints with police, shortly after which her home was searched and her electronic devices confiscated. She was later arrested and has reportedly been held in pre-trial detention since August 2023.

The Moscow Times noted in a separate report that the crackdown "has led to the silencing of nearly all anti-war statements and news that clashes with the Kremlin’s narrative of the war."

Probably the best-known target of the new Russian laws, at least among gamers, is Metro 2033 author Dmitry Glukhovsky, who has been vocally critical of the invasion of Ukraine, and of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin directly. Glukhovsky was sentenced to eight years in prison for speaking out against the invasion, but evaded imprisonment because he's not actually in Russia. Bazhutova, a resident of Moscow, was not so lucky.

"We consider streamer Anna Bazhutova (YokoBovich) a political prisoner," the Political Prisoners Memorial website wrote when Bazhutova was arrested in 2023. "The criminal case against Bazhutova violates her right to freedom of speech and is designed to silence the voices of people in Russia who criticise the war against Ukraine.

"Concerning the war crimes in Bucha, the accusation of publishing 'knowingly false' information is untenable, since international investigations under the auspices of the United Nations, where Russia is still a member, point to the guilt of the Russian side."

Bazhutova's lawyer described the sentence as "harsh" and said they will appeal. Bazhutova herself was someone more pointed in her comments. "It's f**ked up," she said while in the witness box. "It's disgusting and vile."

Russian forces have established a filtration camp in the Russian-controlled part of Vovchansk, while the town itself is being destroyed by shelling and rendered uninhabitable, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniegubov, said on air on the Ukrainian national channel.

“People have nowhere to return to. We understand that they will be living in compact living spaces or in accommodation that they find on their own for the winter and possibly the next year. Not many people remain in the territory under the occupiers, whom the enemy is using as a human shield, and according to our information, filtration camps have been created there,” Syniegubov said.

According to his data, up to 50 residents remain in the part of Vovchansk controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The evacuation of people is being carried out by the military and the police under constant shelling by Russians.

Under pressure from Switzerland and the countries of the Global South, amendments unfavourable for Ukraine have been added to the draft decision of the Peace Summit which threaten the without-alternative status of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula, and open the way for other peace initiatives.

Details: The decision by the summit, if approved in the wording that some media outlets have seen, will definitely not meet Ukraine’s ambitions.

Switzerland, which is hosting the summit, has taken into consideration the proposals put forward by key players in the draft decision (and added some amendments unfavourable for Kyiv itself) and sent out the results to the capitals of the participating states for final approval before the summit.

EP says this document "completely destroys the idea of the Peace Summit". But Ukraine gave up its plans under pressure from Bern and other countries.

Moreover, the summit focuses on only three narrow issues (nuclear security, food security and the liberation of prisoners of war), which are included in the Ukrainian Peace Formula but whose implementation is not relevant to achieving peace.

The Swiss side explained that such a narrow selection is supposed to "facilitate consensus building". Yet all this poses additional threats to Ukraine, specifically in terms of the further involvement of Russia in the negotiation process and the conditions necessary for it.

"Therefore, in order for Russia to turn from an aggressor into a participant in peaceful negotiations, the ‘confidence-building measures’ must not only concern the nuclear sector, maritime security and prisoners of war swaps," the article states.

With that, Ukraine has made considerable concessions concerning its requirements in the "nuclear bloc": all mentions of the liberation or demilitarisation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have been removed from the draft document.

Kościuszko Mound, completed in 1823, is one of four artificial hills constructed in Krak�w to commemorate historical figures.

“The EU Council should ‘no later than’ June approve the negotiating frameworks for Ukraine and Moldova, allowing for the convening of intergovernmental conferences with both countries by the end of this month,” as stated in the letter.

EU Ambassador to Kyiv Katarina Maternova also pointed out that Ukraine is ready to begin accession talks with the EU.

The letter encourages the EU Council to consider approving negotiating frameworks for Ukraine and Moldova by June. If approved, this would allow for intergovernmental conferences with both countries to take place later in the month.

It was reported earlier that formal accession negotiations might start as early as June 25.

The chassis holds two launchers for the DM-140 missiles and compartments with the UZP-77 or UZP-67 detonating cable. The charge is a 7-centimeter-thick, 93-meter-long rope filled with an explosive inside. Depending on the type, the weight of the explosive in one charge for the UR-77 ranges from 665 to 725 kilograms.

Budapest has repeatedly opposed Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU, sanctions on Russia, undermined Western aid efforts for Ukraine, and maintained close relations with Moscow throughout the full-scale war.

In mid-May, Hungary vetoed a resolution in the Council of Europe to officially recognize and support President Volodymyr Zelensky's 10-point peace formula, which is to be discussed during the upcoming summit.

Luch-2's recent maneuvers are not unprecedented when it comes to Russian spacecraft behavior. The satellite's predecessor, Luch-1, was a known interloper found close to other nations' satellites on multiple occasions, including in 2015 when it sparked international concern after it was parked directly between two Intelsat satellites for five months, at times maneuvering to about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) of the American space vehicles.

While Intelsat officials said at the time that the Russian satellite did not interfere with their satellite services, this was the first publicly documented incident of a commercial operator approached by a foreign military satellite, SpaceNews reported. In 2018, France accused Russia of using Luch-1 to try and intercept communications from one of the country's satellites used for military purposes, calling it "not only unfriendly, but an act of espionage."

An analysis by an American non-profit thinktank found Luch-1 had hopped among at least 19 different spots around the geostationary belt as of 2020. Such maneuvers by Luch-1, which Russia launched in 2014, created "a heightened sense of vigilance within the space community," Aldoria said in last week's news release.

"Luch-2, like its predecessor, has a history of unusual maneuvering near other satellites in geostationary orbit, which has also generated suspicions regarding its mission," the company wrote.

Hoeft niet. Het lijkt me vooral een kwestie van assemblage. Regel dat en je bent er. Als het op gang is kunnen er wel een aantal per week van de band rollen.

Wat wel een probleem kan zijn is dat we na decennia rechtse regeringen geen vet meer op de botten hebben (want ineffici�nt en verspilling etc.) en elke tegenslag dus tot vertraging kan leiden. De mindset van alles moet just-in-time en lean en hyperefficient en zo is er de afgelopen decennia bij meerdere generaties ingerost. Dat is in de huidige situatie wel een nadeel. Ja hoor. Dat zijn de betere reacties altijd op dit forum . Blijft pijnlijk de realiteit. Grappige is dat ik gisteren nog dacht "die gast is al maanden niet over kernbommen begonnen maar heeft het alleen over die zielige mensen daar." En voila... binnen een dag.
