quote:
The government on Friday reported a more than 80 percent drop over the past month in the number of migrant children in Border Patrol custody, down to 790 on Thursday, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, said on Friday in an interview. A month ago, 5,767 migrant children were in Border Patrol custody.
And the length of time children are staying in border cells has decreased as well, to an average of 28 hours in recent days from 133 hours a month ago. Federal law mandates that migrant children be transferred out of Border Patrol custody within 72 hours. Mr. Mayorkas said that as of Friday, there were as few as four children held there for more than that time.
“The progress that has been made is dramatic,” Mr. Mayorkas said. He credits much of the success to the emergency shelters the Federal Emergency Management Agency set up in vacant facilities throughout the United States, including in convention centers in Dallas and San Diego, an expo center in San Antonio, and a military site and a former camp for oil workers in Texas.
Mr. Mayorkas said additional department employees, including asylum officers, had been deployed to help the Department of Health and Human Services connect the children to family members in the country.
quote:
Donald Trump's plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border did not come from security analysts following years of study or through evidence that a wall would reduce illegal immigration. Amazingly, for something so central to the current U.S. president, the wall came about as a "mnemonic device" thought up by a pair of political consultants to remind Donald Trump to talk about illegal immigration.
In 2014, Trump's plan to run for president moved into high gear. His political confidant was consultant Roger Stone. "Inside Trump's circle, the power of illegal immigration to manipulate popular sentiment was readily apparent, and his advisers brainstormed methods for keeping their attention-addled boss on message," writes Joshua Green, author of Devil's Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Nationalist Uprising. "They needed a trick, a mnemonic device. In the summer of 2014, they found one that clicked."
Joshua Green had good access to Trump insiders, including Sam Nunberg, who worked with Stone. "Roger Stone and I came up with the idea of 'the Wall,' and we talked to Steve [Bannon] about it," according to Nunberg. "It was to make sure he [Trump] talked about immigration."
The concept of the Wall did not click right away with the candidate. "Initially, Trump seemed indifferent to the idea," writes Green. "But in January 2015, he tried it out at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a presidential cattle call put on by David Bossie's group, Citizens United. 'One of his pledges was, 'I will build a Wall,' and the place just went nuts,' said Nunberg. Warming to the concept, Trump waited a beat and then added a flourish that brought down the house. 'Nobody,' he said, 'builds like Trump.'"
quote:
"It is clear from our research that persons who overstay their visas add to the US undocumented population at a higher rate than border crossers. This is not a blip, but a trend which has become the norm," said Donald Kerwin, CMS' executive director, in a statement. "As these numbers indicate, construction of hundreds of more miles of border wall would not address the challenge of irregular migration into our country, far from it."

quote:
It's 452 miles (727 km) in total, according to the latest US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) information (4 January 2021).
However, only 80 miles of new barriers have been built where there were none before - that includes 47 miles of primary wall, and 33 miles of secondary wall built to reinforce the initial barrier.
The vast majority of the 452 miles is replacing existing structures at the border that had been built by previous US administrations.
En is die muur nou zo veilig?
