quote: EXCLUSIVE: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SONY'S NEXT-GEN PLAYSTATIONMARK CERNY WOULD like to get one thing out of the way right now: The videogame console that Sony has spent the past four years building is no mere upgrade. You’d have good reason for thinking otherwise. Sony and Microsoft both extended the current console generation via a mid-cycle refresh, with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 spawning mini-sequels (the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro). “The key question,” Cerny says, “is whether the console adds another layer to the sorts of experiences you already have access to, or if it allows for fundamental changes in what a game can be.” The answer, in this case, is the latter. It’s why we’re sitting here, secreted away in a conference room at Sony’s headquarters in Foster City, California, where Cerny is finally detailing the inner workings of the as-yet-unnamed console that will replace the PS4. If history is any guide, it will eventually be dubbed the PlayStation 5. For now, Cerny responds to that question—and many others—with an enigmatic smile. The “next-gen console,“ as he refers to it repeatedly, won’t be landing in stores anytime in 2019. A number of studios have been working with it, though, and Sony recently accelerated its deployment of devkits so that game creators will have the time they need to adjust to its capabilities. As he did with the PS4, Cerny acted as lead system architect for the coming system, integrating developers’ wishes and his own gaming hopes into something that’s much more revolution than evolution. For the more than 90 million people who own PS4s, that's good news indeed. Sony’s got a brand-new box. A TRUE GENERATIONAL shift tends to include a few foundational adjustments. A console’s CPU and GPU become more powerful, able to deliver previously unattainable graphical fidelity and visual effects; system memory increases in size and speed; and game files grow to match, necessitating larger downloads or higher-capacity physical media like discs. PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into $10,000 high-end processors, no game console has been able to manage it. Yet. Ray tracing’s immediate benefits are largely visual. Because it mimics the way light bounces from object to object in a scene, reflective surfaces and refractions through glass or liquid can be rendered much more accurately, even in real-time, leading to heightened realism. According to Cerny, the applications go beyond graphic implications. “If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players’ footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” he says. “It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment.” The AMD chip also includes a custom unit for 3D audio that Cerny thinks will redefine what sound can do in a videogame. “As a gamer,” he says, “it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With the next console the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.” The result, Cerny says, will make you feel more immersed in the game as sounds come at you from above, from behind, and from the side. While the effect will require no external hardware—it will work through TV speakers and visual surround sound—he allows that the “gold standard” will be headphone audio. One of the words Cerny uses to describe the audio may be a familiar to those who follow virtual reality: presence, that feeling of existing inside a simulated environment. When he mentions it, I ask him about PlayStation VR, the peripheral system that has sold more than 4 million units since its 2016 release. Specifically, I ask if there will be a next-gen PSVR to go alongside this next console. “I won't go into the details of our VR strategy today,” he says, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.” So. New CPU, new GPU, the ability to deliver unprecedented visual and audio effects in a game (and maybe a PSVR sequel at some point). That’s all great, but there’s something else that excites Cerny even more. Something that he calls “a true game changer,” something that more than anything else is “the key to the next generation.” It’s a hard drive. THE LARGER A game gets—last year’s Red Dead Redemption 2 clocked in at a horse-choking 99 gigabytes for the PS4—the longer it takes to do just about everything. Loading screens can last minutes while the game pulls what it needs to from the hard drive. Same goes for “fast travel,” when characters transport between far-flung points within a game world. Even opening a door can take over a minute, depending on what’s on the other side and how much more data the game needs to load. Starting in the fall of 2015, when Cerny first began talking to developers about what they’d want from the next generation, he heard it time and time again: I know it’s impossible, but can we have an SSD? Solid-state drives have been available in budget laptops for more than a decade, and the Xbox One and PS4 both offer external SSDs that claim to improve load times. But not all SSDs are created alike. As Cerny points out, “I have an SSD in my laptop, and when I want to change from Excel to Word I can wait 15 seconds.” What’s built into Sony’s next-gen console is something a little more specialized. To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early “low-speed” version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact. That’s just one consequence of an SSD. There’s also the speed with which a world can be rendered, and thus the speed with which a character can move through that world. Cerny runs a similar two-console demonstration, this time with the camera moving up one of Midtown’s avenues. On the original PS4, the camera moves at about the speed Spidey hits while web-slinging. “No matter how powered up you get as Spider-Man, you can never go any faster than this,” Cerny says, “because that's simply how fast we can get the data off the hard drive.” On the next-gen console, the camera speeds uptown like it’s mounted to a fighter jet. Periodically, Cerny pauses the action to prove that the surrounding environment remains perfectly crisp. (While the next-gen console will support 8K graphics, TVs that deliver it are few and far between, so we’re using a 4K TV.) What else developers will be able to do is a question Cerny can’t answer yet, because those developers are still figuring it all out—but he sees the SSD as unlocking an entirely new age, one that upends the very tropes that have become the bedrock of gaming. “We're very used to flying logos at the start of the game and graphic-heavy selection screens," he says, "even things like multiplayer lobbies and intentionally detailed loadout processes, because you don't want players just to be waiting." At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. That’s not all. “The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster." As opposed to 19 times faster for the next-gen console, judging from the fast-travel demo. As you’ve noticed, this is all hardware talk. Cerny isn’t ready to chat about services or other features, let alone games and price, and neither is anyone at Sony. Nor will you hear much about the console at E3 in June—for the first time, Sony won’t be holding a keynote at the annual games show. But a few more things come out during the course of our conversation. For example, the next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won’t be a download-only machine. Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console. As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. (Where exactly Hideo Kojima’s forthcoming title Death Stranding fits in that process is still unconfirmed. When asked, a spokesperson in the room repeated that the game would be released for PS4, but Cerny’s smile and pregnant pause invites speculation that it will in fact be a two-platform release.) What gaming will look like in a year or two, let alone 10, is a matter of some debate. Battle-royale games have reshaped multiplayer experiences; augmented reality marries the fantastic and real in unprecedented ways. Google is leading a charge away from traditional consoles by launching a cloud-gaming service, Stadia, later this year. Microsoft’s next version of the Xbox will presumably integrate cloud gaming as well to allow people to play Xbox games on multiple devices. Sony’s plans in this regard are still unclear—it’s one of the many things Cerny is keeping mum on, saying only that “we are cloud-gaming pioneers, and our vision should become clear as we head toward launch”—but it’s hard to think there won’t be more news coming on that front. For now, there’s the living room. It’s where the PlayStation has sat through four generations—and will continue to sit at least one generation more.

quote: To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games.
Dat razendsnel renderen van die stad |

quote: PS5 Players Can Play with PS4 Players Using Backwards Compatibility, Sony ConfirmsCross-generation play When you stop to think about it, this should be pretty obvious, but it's nice to have it confirmed by Sony all the same. Yes, PS5 players will be able to play with PS4 players thanks to backwards compatibility. If you nab a PS5 at launch but your PS4 friends don't, you'll still be able to enjoy your favourite online titles with them. Again, it's all about this "seamless" next-gen transition that Sony keeps mentioning. Cross-generation play was brought up during the company's most recent investor relations question and answer session. When talking about backwards compatibility in general, vice president John Kodera was quick to add that cross-generation play will be important to the PlayStation community. Keeping existing players invested is clearly of high priority to Sony as it looks to introduce the PS5, supposedly next year. http://www.pushsquare.com(...)bility_sony_confirms De volgende bevestiging van PS4 BC. |

quote: PS5: Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi and Tekken Boss Katsuhiro Harada Share their Impressions and ExpectationsToday’s issue of the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu includes an interesting interview to Capcom Head of Consumer Games Development Division 1 Jun Takeuchi and Bandai Namco Director and Producer Katsuhiro Harada. Both developers were quizzed on their expectations and ideas about the PS5 (or whatever Sony will call the new console). Jun Takeuchi's impressions: While performance improvements tend to take the spotlight, the shorter loading times offered by the high-bandwidth SSD and the efficient use of memory will significantly contribute to reducing the time users spend waiting. He also believes that it’ll create an environment in which it’ll be easier to show off Capcom’s technological prowess. For instance, he’d like to try to push the virtual reality features implemented in Resident Evil 7 one step further. He expects that the new hardware will enable more realistic experiences. Katsuhiro Harada's impressions: The second part of the interview is all about Harada-san, who mentions that he is also a hardcore PC gamer. When it was mentioned that the bandwidth would be wider than a PC he had guessed that the new console would have a fast custom-made SSD that is also cost-efficient. Streaming from an SSD can at times even overtake the processing performance of the hardware, but since it’s important to have a middleware that can compress and deploy data more efficiently, he’s looking forward to seeing how this is supported. Speaking of the GPU, while many are looking forward to Ray Tracing being used in real time during gameplay, from a game developer’s point of view, Harada-san also wants to focus on development efficiency. For instance, it’s possible to save time while creating background data and other baked data by using ray-tracing on the development kit. https://twinfinite.net/20(...)t&utm_medium=twitter

Eind 2021 Avatar.
-Bethesda: Skyrim 4K 60fps update/remaster, andere spellen krijgen updates (TES Online in ieder geval). Iets Fallout een remaster of een updateEventueel Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored 3 en/of The Evil Within 3. Geen Starfield en TES6.......
2K: Borderlands 3 update, eventueel eind 2020 of ergens in 2021 een nieuwe Bioshock.
-Rockstar: Red Dead Redemption 2 update, GTA V update misschien, eventueel eind 2021 een nieuwe Bully (2) of GTA VI.
-Bungie: Destiny 3
Crossgen games en updates: Ghost of Tsushima, nieuwe Ratchet and Clank (twijfelgeval anders exclusief voor de PS5), Death Stranding, The Last Of Us Part II, God of War, Spider-Man.
-CD Projekt Red: Cyberpunk 2077 update, remaster of crossgen. The Witcher 3, Gwent en Thronebreaker krijgen eventueel updates.

Cross Gen Saves & Play for PS5 and PS4 (play anywhere?)Ryan said his company plans to offer "cross-generational play," effectively offering players the ability to play a game on their PS4, switch to a new console and continue, and then switch back. Effectively, it won't matter to Sony's servers which device they're playing on. As a result, they'll have all the same friends while they do that. "Whether it's backwards compatibility or the possibility of cross generational play, we'll be able to transition that community to next-gen," he said. "It won't be a binary choice about whether you have to be ether on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship." -120 Hz support for PS5 -VR exceeded expectations -On streaming: "...we have to show an open mindedness and a desire to do things to an extent that we haven't had to in the past." -"...our intent is to build on those learnings and really look to try to take PlayStation Now to the next level later this year and then in the years to come." https://www.cnet.com/news(...)-generation-console/

quote: Rumor: Sony PS5 launch date LEAKED in internal email — and it's closer than you thinkThe Sony PS5 will be unveiled at a "PlayStation Meeting 2020" launch event on February 21, 2020. At least, that's what a leaked internal email that surfaced online earlier this week would have you believe, with the sender revealing that the gathering will be used to showcase "the future of Sony PlayStation" to the world. Before we dive deeper, we should note that the information detailed in this report should be taken with a considerable pinch of your preferred seasoning; the email first surfaced on 4Chan as a text extract, then later on NeoGaf in visual form, with both citing an anonymous insider as the source, so it's far from credible. What else can we learn from the titbit, you ask? Well, the internal circular — sent by a former Senior Marketing Manager to the Marketing department — states that Sony has started preparing invitations for publishers, such as Activision, EA, and Ubisoft, to PlayStation Meeting 2020 to showcase their next-generation titles. It also details that Ghost of Tsushima, which was announced for PS4 back in 2017 and has been delayed ever since, will make an appearance at Meeting 2020 as a PS5 exclusive, joining The Last of Us 2 in Sony's flagship portfolio for 2020. That's not to mean the title won't launch for PS4, though — it should be available on both. Now, let's address the elephant in the room: The console itself. While the email doesn't detail Sony's plans to discuss the PS5 at the event, it's only fitting that it will touch on it. After all, the hardware is the missing part of the equation — and in order to embrace the future of PlayStation, we first need to know what's coming. However, there are some scraps of information floating around internet that hint at what to expect — most of which originate from Wired's exclusive interview with PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny, who revealed that the CPU driving the console is based on the third generation of AMD's oft-raved-about Ryzen line of processors. Cerny also divulged that the PlayStation 5 can run 8K graphics to boot, although whether it will be native 8K (versus 4K material that's been upscaled to the higher resolution) remains to be seen. All he was willing to confirm is that there's an SSD on board to help the machine render visuals at a faster rate, hinting at upscaling. https://www.t3.com/news/sony-ps5-launch-date-leak Geen idee of het ergens al is ontkracht maar zoiets zal het wel worden. |

quote: PlayStation 5 Pro To Release Together With Base Model – RumorThe current console generation is the first one that saw the release of high-end models of base consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and it seems like it will be the same for the next generation of consoles. While Sony has yet to say anything about the matter, it seems like a PlayStation 5 Pro model will indeed be released and, better yet, it will be released alongside the base model. According to Japanese journalist Zenji Nishikawa, Sony is launching two different PlayStation 5 models next year, the base and the Pro model. According to the journalist, Sony has acknowledged the interest in a high-end model and wants to give players what they want right from the beginning of the generation. Being a rumor, we have to take everything with a grain of salt until an official confirmation comes in, but there may be more than just some merit in what Zenji Nishikawa revealed, as he has proven to be extremely reliable, having talked about the Nintendo Switch Lite before the official announcement. Last month, we had the chance to learn more about the PlayStation 5 design thanks to a leak which showed the dev kit’s design. The console has yet to be revealed in full, but some small details have been revealed earlier this year, confirming that the CPU will be based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen Line and the GPU will support ray tracing. The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. The PlayStation 5 console has yet to be fully unveiled. We will keep you updated on the console as soon as possible, so stay tuned for all the latest news. https://wccftech.com/playstation-5-pro-reveal/ Volgens de geruchten de potentiële PS5-controller in het spotje.....

quote: PlayStation Joins Forces with the United Nations to Combat Climate ChangeAt the UN Climate Summit, I will join leaders in the gaming industry to make formal commitments to contribute to the efforts of the UN Environment committee through a new partnership, the Playing for the Planet alliance. We believe that careful stewardship of natural resources is of utmost importance and are aligned with the mission and objectives of UN Environment. Earlier this year, they created a new Youth and Environment Alliance and quickly realized partnering with the video game industry would help them reach their sustainable development goals. At SIE, we have made substantial commitments and efforts to reduce the power consumption of the PS4 by utilizing efficient technologies such as System-on-a-Chip architecture integrating a high-performance graphics processor, die shrink, power scaling, as well as energy saving modes such as Suspend-to-RAM. For context, we estimate the carbon emissions we have avoided to date already amount to almost 16 million metric tons, increasing to 29 million metric tons over the course of the next 10 years (which equals the CO2 emissions for the nation of Denmark in 2017). I am also very pleased to announce the next generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W). If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes. From an operations point of view, we will complete a carbon footprint assessment of our gaming services and will report the energy efficiency measures we employ at our data centers. We are committed to informing consumers of energy efficient console set-up and use. Our commitments are not only related to hardware and operations, we are also keen to help inform people interested in sustainability goals. We have committed to working with the industry and climate experts to develop reference information for use by game developers that wish to include sustainability themes in games. In addition, we will investigate potential PS VR applications that can raise awareness of climate issues and climate experts. https://blog.us.playstati(...)mbat-climate-change/

quote: An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020Featuring a new controller with haptic technology and adaptive triggers. Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there's been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I'm proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we'll be launching in time for Holiday 2020. These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in a story that posted this morning. The "more" refers to something I'm quite excited about - a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion. To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5's new controller. First, we're adopting haptic feedback to replace the "rumble" technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud. The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can't wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal. While there's much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I'd like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games. https://blog.us.playstati(...)unches-holiday-2020/
quote: Exclusive: A Deeper Look at the PlayStation 5Now that the name is official, we've got more details about Sony's next-gen console—from the haptics-packed controller to UI improvements. Ever since the original PlayStation hit the market in 1994, Sony's series of videogame consoles has stuck to the numbers. No "Super," no "Max," no "Code Red Xtreme"; just PlayStations 2, 3, and 4. With such unwavering consistency, the name of the next iteration has been a question only in the most technical sense—but Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan is still ready to answer it. The console, he tells me, will be called PlayStation 5. "It's nice to be able to say it," he says. "Like a giant burden has been lifted from my shoulders." So. There you go. PlayStation 5, holidays 2020. Sony hasn't said too much about the console since April, when WIRED broke the story about development efforts on what was then known only as the "next-gen console." In fact, the company hasn't said anything. Sony skipped games show E3 this year, a void during which Microsoft unveiled details about its own next-gen console, a successor to the Xbox One referred to only as Project Scarlett. Like the PS5, Scarlett will boast a CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen line and a GPU based on its Navi family; like the PS5, it will ditch the spinning hard drive for a solid-state drive. Now, though, in a conference room at Sony’s US headquarters, Ryan and system architect Mark Cerny are eager to share specifics. Before they do, Cerny wants to clarify something. When we last discussed the forthcoming console, he spoke about its ability to support ray-tracing, a technique that can enable complex lighting and sound effects in 3D environments. Given the many questions he’s received since, he fears he may have been ambiguous about how the PS5 would accomplish this—and confirms that it’s not a software-level fix, which some had feared. “There is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware,” he says, “which I believe is the statement that people were looking for.” (A belief born out by my own Twitter mentions, which for a couple of weeks in April made a graphics-rendering technique seem like the only thing the internet had ever cared about.) With that in hand, back to the PS5's solid-state drive, which Cerny first extolled for the way it can turn loading time from a hassle to a blink. It’s not just the speed that makes the SSD formidablwe, he says, but the efficiency it offers. Think about the hard drive in a game console, spinning like a 5400-rpm vinyl record. For the console to read a piece of information off the drive, it first has to send out the disk head—like a turntable needle—to find it. Each “seek,” as it’s known, may only entail a scant handful of milliseconds, but seeks add up. To minimize them, developers will often duplicate certain game assets in order to form contiguous data blocks, which the drive can read faster. We’re talking common stuff here: lampposts, anonymous passersby. But data adds up too. "If you look at a game like Marvel's Spider-Man," Cerny says, "there are some pieces of data duplicated 400 times on the hard drive." The SSD sweeps away the need for all that duping—so not only is its raw read speed dramatically faster than a hard drive, but it saves crucial space. How developers will take advantage of that space will likely differ; some may opt to build a larger or more detailed game world, others may be content to shrink the size of the games or patches. Either way, physical games for the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks, inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Bluray player. However, game installation (which is mandatory, given the speed difference between the SSD and the optical drive) will be a bit different than in the PS4. This time around, aided in part by the simplified game data possible with the SSD, Sony is changing its approach to storage, making for a more configurable installation—and removal—process. "Rather than treating games like a big block of data," Cerny says, "we're allowing finer-grained access to the data." That could mean the ability to install just a game's multiplayer campaign, leaving the single-player campaign for another time, or just installing the whole thing and then deleting the single-player campaign once you've finished it. Regardless of what parts of a game you choose to install and play, you'll be able to stay abreast of it via a completely revamped user interface. The PS4's bare-bones home screen at times feels frozen in amber; you can see what your friends have recently done, or even what game title they might be playing at the moment, but without launching an individual title, there's no way to tell what single-player missions you could do or what multiplayer matches you can join. The PS5 will change that. "Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games, we don't want the player to have to boot the game, see what's up, boot the game, see what's up," Cerny says. "Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time. Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player you just jump right into whatever you like." He says this like he says many other things: knowing he'll fend off any follow-up question that ventures beyond what he wants to talk about. Like, What does the UI actually look like? Or, How big will the SSD be? Or even, Is that a microphone? Which is exactly what I ask when Cerny hands me a prototype of the next-generation controller, an unlabeled matte-black doohickey that looks an awful lot like the PS4's DualShock 4. After all, there's a little hole on it, and a recently published patent points to Sony developing a voice-driven AI assistant for the PlayStation. But all I get from Cerny is, "We'll talk more about it another time." ("We file patents on a regular basis," a spokesperson tells me later, "and like many companies, some of those patents end up in our products, and some don’t.") The controller (which history suggests will one day be called the DualShock 5, though Cerny just says "it doesn't have a name yet") does have some features Cerny's more interested in acknowledging. One is "adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun. It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller. Combined with an improved speaker on the controller, the haptics can enable some astonishing effects. First, I play through a series of short demos, courtesy of the same Japan Studio team that designed PlayStation VR's Astro Bot Rescue Mission. In the most impressive, I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces, all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences. Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy. On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation. Next, a version of Gran Turismo Sport that Sony had ported over to a PS5 devkit—a devkit that on quick glance looks a lot like the one Gizmodo reported on last week. (The company refused to comment on questions about how the devkit's form factor might compare to what's being considered for the consumer product.) Driving on the border between the track and the dirt, I could feel both surfaces. Doing the same thing on the same track using a DualShock 4 on a PS4, that sensation disappeared entirely. It wasn't that the old style rumble feedback paled in comparison, it was that there was no feedback at all. User tests found that rumble feedback was too tiring to use continuously, so the released version of GT Sport simply didn't use it. That difference has been a long time coming. Product manager Toshi Aoki says the controller team has been working on haptic feedback since the DualShock 4 was in development. They even could have included it in PS4 Pro, the mid-cycle refresh—though doing so would have created a "split experience" for gamers, so the feature suite was held for the next generation. There are some other small improvements over the DualShock 4. The next-gen controller uses a USB Type-C connector for charging (and you can play through the cable as well). Its larger-capacity battery and haptics motors make the new controller a bit heavier than the DualShock 4, but Aoki says it will still come in a bit lighter than the current Xbox controller "with batteries in it." How game studios will use all these new features—from previously known ones like the SSD and ray-tracing acceleration to newer ones like the controller and real-time UI—is still a matter of some speculation. While a number of studios already had their PS5 devkits, the controller prototypes began rolling out much more recently, and no one is ready to name specific titles they're developing for the PS5. "We're working on a big one right now," says Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint Games, which most recently worked on last year's PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus. "I'll let you figure out the rest." That doesn't mean they're not exploring. "The SSD has me really excited," Thrush says. "You don't need to do gameplay hacks anymore to artificially slow players down—lock them behind doors, anything like that. Back in the cartridge days, games used to load instantly; we're kind of going back to what consoles used to be." "I could be really specific and talk about experimenting with ambient occlusion techniques, or the examination of ray-traced shadows," says Laura Miele, chief studio officer for EA. "More generally, we’re seeing the GPU be able to power machine learning for all sorts of really interesting advancements in the gameplay and other tools." Above all, Miele adds, it's the speed of everything that will define the next crop of consoles. "We're stepping into the generation of immediacy. In mobile games, we expect a game to download in moments, and to be just a few taps from jumping right in. Now we’re able to tackle that in a big way." That sort of tackle gets a lot easier, Jim Ryan knows, when a burden has been lifted from your shoulders. So say hello to the PlayStation 5, officially. Maybe one of these days we'll all learn what the thing actually looks like. https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-playstation-5/

The Last of Us: Part II. Bend Studio – Days Gone 2 of een nieuw IP (PS5) Guerrilla Games – Horizon 2 en/of Killzone (PS5) Insomniac Games – Spider-Man 2, nieuw IP of Ratchet & Clank (PS5) Japan Studio – The Playroom PS5 en/of Knack 3 (PS5) London Studio – Partygame en/of Blood & Truth 2 (PS5) Media Molecule – Dreams (PS4 & PS5) Naughty Dog – The Last of Us: Part II (PS4 & PS5) Pixelopus – ????

quote: Streaming Service PS Now Will Still Be a Thing on PS5PS5, launching on holiday 2020, will support the game streaming subscription service PS Now. Sony revealed that the streaming service PS Now will also be available on PS5. The info comes through an interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Network division’s Yasuhiro Osaki. The interview is included in this week’s Famitsu magazine. Yasuhiro Osaki also spoke on upcoming changes regarding PS Now. Basically, more popular games will be added to PS Now every month, but the number of time-limited additions will also increase. The interview also reveals how Sony has currently no plans to bring PS Now to smartphones. PlayStation Now is a subscription service that lets players enjoy over 700 games through streaming. Some titles are permanent while some are time-limited. The service currently includes PS2, PS3, and PS4 games. This is just a guess but Sony will probably add PS5 games sometime after the console’s launch. PS Now is currently available on PS4 and PC. Sony will launch PS5 on holiday 2020. Multiple details on the PS5 were recently revealed, most notably how Sony is still working on the backward compatibility with PS4. https://www.dualshockers.com/ps-now-confirmed-on-ps5/

quote: PlayStation 5 May Natively Play Older PlayStation Games; Console Is About The Past And The Future – RumorBackward compatibility has become a big thing thanks to the Xbox One feature that allows players to enjoy select Xbox 360 and Xbox games. Sony has been somewhat left behind in this regard, but it seems like the PlayStation 5 will come with the ability to play all PlayStation titles natively. As reported by Mystic, Twitter user PSErebus recently tweeted that players shouldn't sell their PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 games in preparation of the PlayStation 5 release, hinting that something may be brewing regarding backward compatibility. PSErebus proved to be extremely reliable, as he has revealed PlayStation information, such as The Last of Us Part 2 release date before the official announcement. This tweet falls in line with what Patrick Keplek recently revealed regarding the PlayStation 5, saying that the console is about the past as much as it is about the future. If it can play all PlayStation games natively, it would be extremely huge, giving the console a massive library right at launch. Sony strongly hinted that PlayStation 4 games will be playable on the PlayStation 5, so there may be some truth in this rumor. As Sony has yet to elaborate on the matter, however, we have to take everything with a grain of salt. The PlayStation 5 will sport, among many other improvements over the PlayStation 4, faster load times and a controller with haptics enhancements. Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games, we don't want the player to have to boot the game, see what's up, boot the game, see what's up. Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time. Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player, you just jump right into whatever you like. The PlayStation 5 console will be released during Holiday 2020 worldwide. We will keep you updated on the console as soon as more come in on it, so stay tuned for all the latest news. https://wccftech.com/play(...)r-playstation-games/
