Officials say Trump has been captivated by the nuclear talks, asking staffers for daily updates on the status of the negotiations. His frustration with the lack of progress has been coupled with irritation about the media coverage of the joint statement he signed on June 12 in Singapore, a document that contains no timeline or specifics on denuclearization but has reduced tensions between the two countries.

The U.S. Treasury is open to removing Russian aluminum producer Rusal from a U.S. sanctions list, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Friday, adding the objective was “not to put Rusal out of business.”

Mnuchin’s comment was the latest indication the Trump administration was trying to aid sanctions-hit Rusal, which has taken a series of steps to try to appease the U.S. government and get the restrictions lifted.

The U.S. Treasury in April imposed sanctions against billionaire Oleg Deripaska and the eight companies in which he is a large shareholder, including Rusal, in response to what it called “malign activities” by Russia. But the sanctions caused havoc in the global aluminum market, prompting several countries and companies to successfully lobby Treasury for a softening of the terms on Rusal.

“The company has approached us on certain de-listing issues (from the Specially Designated Nationals List),” Mnuchin said in an interview with Reuters in São Paulo ahead of G20 finance meetings this weekend in Argentina.

“I’m not going to go into the exact specifics of what those proposals are and where we stand on them, but, yes, if we can find an acceptable solution, that is our objective,” Mnuchin said.

“Our objective is not to put Rusal out of business,” he added, acknowledging that Rusal was important to the global aluminum market.

Last month Rusal shareholders elected a new board of directors, dominated by independent directors and operational managers.

Deripaska and a team of his top managers stepped down from Rusal’s board of directors in May and are currently working on several options to reduce his control over the company.

In two tweets, sent early on Sunday morning, he says the "ridiculously heavily redacted" documents "confirm with little doubt that the Department of 'Justice' and FBI misled the courts" - criticising his own agencies.

It is unclear how he reached this conclusion. However, he is backed by Tom Fitton - the president of Judicial Watch which fought to have the documents released - who said in a tweet "they seem to confirm the FBI and DoJ misled the courts in withholding info about Clinton-DNC being behind the info used to get the Fisa warrant".

Democrat House leader Nancy Pelosi has come to a different conclusion.

In a statement, she said: "Despite President Trump's repeated claims, these documents provide clear evidence of 'Russia's co-ordination with Carter Page,' a high-ranking Trump campaign official, 'to undermine and improperly and illegally influence the 2016 US presidential election'."

She added: "The GOP (Republican Party) must cease their attacks on our law enforcement and intelligence communities, and finally decide where their loyalty lies."

How does this fit into the wider picture?

The documents' release comes nine days after 12 Russians were charged with hacking Democratic officials in the 2016 US elections.

The charges form part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into US intelligence findings that Russians conspired to tilt the election in Mr Trump's favour, and whether any of his campaign aides colluded. Mr Trump has labelled the investigation a "witch hunt".

So far, the inquiry has indicted 32 people - mostly Russian nationals in absentia - as well as three companies and four former Trump advisers.

Just days later, Mr Trump met his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, at a summit in Helsinki and was asked by reporters whether he believed Russia had meddled in the 2016 election,

"President Putin says it's not Russia. I don't see any reason why it would be," he replied, appearing to back the Russians over his own agencies.

The next day, following widespread outrage, he read a pre-prepared statement, saying he actually meant "wouldn't".

On Thursday, the White House announced it had invited Mr Putin to Washington in October - an announcement which took director of National Intelligence Dan Coats by surprise.

Mr Coats, who was speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, was filmed laughing, before saying "that's going to be special".

He has since said his "admittedly awkward response was in no way meant to be disrespectful or criticise the actions of the President".
