They want the mines, yet when you talk with them about the lifestyle they complain about the danger, the damage it does to one’s body, and the hours. “It’s hard work and nobody should have to do it,” my BIL says all the time. Then why not go to these programs that not only pay you to learn, but help land you a job afterwards?
It infuriates me that everyone I know from back home will cut off their noses to spite their face. When I try to explain why it’s bad to put their faith into a man who has never lived like they have -- as in choosing between rent and electricity, eating mac and cheese because you can’t afford anything else, taping up your windows because they’re broken and you can’t afford to repair it, etc -- somehow I’m the bad guy. According to them, Trump is going to save them. When I ask from who or what, they can’t give me a single concrete example. It’s always a vague answer like “the Democrats” or “corruption.”
My father is very ill and his life depends on Obamacare. Without it, he would be dead today. Even though he had pre-existing conditions, his insurance now covers the surgery he needs to walk again. And yet he’s in full support of abolishing it for whatever plan the GOP has in mind. He agrees with the funding cuts for social programs, PBS, meals on wheels, etc as they don't affect him personally. I don’t know what to say anymore.
I feel like I’ve reached a limit to my compassion for these issues. I'm ashamed to say it as these people are my heritage, but it almost feels like they must learn a harsh lesson by losing the safety net they've become so reliant on. They simply will not listen to reason.
