Well, J.Lo and behold -- Shades of Blue just landed itself a renewal.
NBC has picked up Jennifer Lopez’s rookie copy drama for a second season.
“We want to thank Jennifer, who is the hardest working woman we know, for her incredible efforts as both the star and producer of this show, as well as well as our other amazing producers and cast for all their tireless work in creating one of the most compelling dramas on television today,” said NBC’s entertainment president Jennifer Salke in a statement. “We’re so excited to find out where this story will lead and have them raise the stakes even higher in what we know will be a fantastic second season.”
Shades of Blue‘s most recent episode drew 5.6 million viewers and a 1.1 rating, down sharply from its strong premiere numbers last month (8.6 million/1.8). NBC notes, however, that the series has improved on the 10 o’clock hour’s pre-Shades, non-sports, non-specials average by 38 percent.

Fox is shipping new Frankenstein-themed drama series Second Chance to Friday, effective next week... ...Second Chance will run Fridays at 9 PM, with its third episode next week airing behind the season finale of MasterChef Junior and the following episodes paired with Sleepy Hollow, which returns to the schedule on February 5, airing Fridays at 8 PM.
Behind a solidly performing final season of American Idol, Second Chance got off to a low ratings start, with the premiere logging a 1.2 in adults 18-49 (Live+Same Day), which ticked up just a bit, to 1.4 in Live+3. The drama held onto less than half of its Idol lead-in. The second episode slipped further, to a 1.0 in L+SD, indicating no upside for the show, which also garnered tepid reviews.

quote:‘The Good Wife’ set to end after its current season.
CBS has officially announced that it will be putting an end to “The Good Wife” after seven seasons. The network chose to make the announcement in grand fashion as well, through a promotional spot during this year’s Super Bowl game.
The show will be ending with the Kings’ original seven-season plan. Glenn Geller, president of CBS Entertainment, and David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, commented on the announcement with the following:
“It’s never easy to say goodbye to one of the crown jewels of your network and studio, much less to a show that is among the best on television. But it also feels very right to end with the seven-year story its creators envisioned, and to celebrate the show’s final run while at the top of its creative game. It has been CBS’s sincere privilege to broadcast and produce ‘The Good Wife’ for seven extraordinary seasons. We thank and applaud the outstanding cast, led by the impeccable Julianna Margulies, and the consummate writing and producing team, headed by the brilliant Robert and Michelle King, who brought to life a smart, sophisticated series that has delivered audiences so many memorable characters and unforgettable moments. It is a series that will only grow in prestige as its episodes are watched again or discovered by new viewers for many years to come.”
The remainder of the series will be comprised of nine episodes, with its series finale set to air on Sunday, May 8.

quote:‘Once Upon a Time,’ ‘The Goldbergs,’ ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ and ‘Quantico’ renewed at ABC
ABC has picked up “Once Upon a Time” for a sixth season, co-creator Adam Horowitz announced on Twitter Thursday. The series returns from its winter hiatus on Sunday.
The network has also picked up a fourth season of “The Goldbergs,” Season 3 of “Fresh Off the Boat” and Season 2 of “Quantico.”
quote:ABC Renews 'Grey's,' 'Scandal,' 'Middle,' 'SHIELD,' 'Modern Family,'
Returning for additional seasons are America's Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Black-ish, Dancing With the Stars, Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, Agents of SHIELD, The Middle, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, Shark Tank and Quantico.
The renewals mark Dungey's first official duties as head of the network and come after Lee historically waited until the Friday before upfronts in May to announce both returning shows as well as his new series pickups. Perhaps what's more interesting is that amid a landscape of more vertically aligned networks and studios, Dungey's early renewals include multiple series from outside studios including Sony Pictures Television (The Goldbergs), 20th Century Fox Television (Modern Family, Fresh Off the Boat) and Warner Bros. Television (The Middle).
"We're very proud of our strong roster of performers, and we're excited about what they will bring us creatively next season," said Channing Dungey, President, ABC Entertainment.
Left on the Bubble
As for the bubble shows, that list is topped by Castle, which again hinges on whether or not stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic will sign new deals to return for a ninth season of the veteran procedural. Produced in-house, Lee told reporters in January that converations were underway to keep the series going in the even that neither of its two leads returned. Insiders say ABC TV Group president Ben Sherwood wanted Lee to focus on more procedural fare -- which would make returning Castle a priority given that most of the network's drama pilots (picked up under Lee) are soaps.
Also on the bubble is country music soap Nashville, which has also seen its viewership erode in its fourth season. The Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere drama is a co-production between ABC Studios and Lionsgate TV and does offer a second revenue stream from its music and album downloads featuring original music produced and performed on the country soap as well as from its annual tours.
Considered unlikely to return is Dan Fogelman's Galavant, a pricey musical comedy that had support largely from Lee and a handful of critics -- but was rumored to be the opposite of the kind of show Sherwood was looking for from the network.
John Ridley's critical and awards season darling American Crime, an anthology that reboots its story and some cast every season, is also left on the bubble. Despite rave reviews and Emmy wins, the series has failed to catch on with viewers. Ridley, for his part, also has a drama pilot in the works at the network that leans more into the procedural format that top brass are said to be leaning toward.
Still to be determined is Tim Allen comedy Last Man Standing -- which this season hit the key 100 episode milestone. Already sold in syndication, the series -- which hails from 20th Century Fox Television -- has continued to defy the odds on Fridays and attract a small but loyal following as part of the network's multicamera block with freshman Dr. Ken.
Meanwhile, the fate of rest of the network's freshman class has yet to be determined. That includes The Muppets -- which quietly wrapped its troubled freshman run; The Family -- which debuts Thursday; comedy Real O'Neals -- which opened well Wednesday; as well as yet to debut The Catch, Of Kings and Prophets and Uncle Buck. The verdict is still out on Dr. Ken, with Blood and Oil and Wicked City already canceled.
Left on the bubble are 'Agent Carter,' 'American Crime,' 'Castle,' 'Nashville,' 'Galavant' and 'Last Man Standing' as Channing Dungey starts to make her mark on the network.

quote:CBS Renews 11 Shows, No Decision on Criminal Minds, Supergirl, CSI: Cyber
CBS has issued early renewals to 11 series for the 2016-17 season, but conspicuously missing from the pickup list is long-running procedural Criminal Minds. Other glaring omissions include CSI: Cyber and all of the Eye network’s rookie offerings, including Supergirl, Limitless and Code Black.
List of renewed shows include Blue Bloods, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Mom, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Scorpion, 2 Broke Girls, Survivor and The Amazing Race.
The Big Bang Theory and NCIS were previously renewed, while CBS announced the end of The Good Wife during the Super Bowl.
CBS’ decision to hold off on renewing its freshman class is a curious one in light of comments CBS CEO Les Moonves made earlier this month in which the exec revealed that “about five” of the network’s rookie series would be back next fall. The exec didn’t specify which quintet he was referring to, but when you eliminate the already- (and hastily) cancelled Angel From Hell, that leaves six freshman contenders: Supergirl, Code Black, Limitless, Life in Pieces and the just-launched Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and the about-to-launch Rush Hour.
