Not five episodes into its Season 4 run, the History channel’s Vikings has been renewed for Season 5.
As with the supersized, split current season, the new cycle will span 20 episodes as well as add Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) to the cast.
“The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television,” History president Jana Bennett said in a statement. “Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Myers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of Roots.”
Meyers’ previous TV credits also include NBC’s short-lived Dracula.
Production on Vikings Season 5 will begin this summer, with an eye on a 2017 premiere date.

CBS has issued early renewals to 11 series for the 2016-17 season, but conspicuously missing from the pickup list is long-running procedural Criminal Minds. Other glaring omissions include CSI: Cyber and all of the Eye network’s rookie offerings, including Supergirl, Limitless and Code Black.
List of renewed shows include Blue Bloods, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, Mom, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Scorpion, 2 Broke Girls, Survivor and The Amazing Race.
The Big Bang Theory and NCIS were previously renewed, while CBS announced the end of The Good Wife during the Super Bowl.
CBS’ decision to hold off on renewing its freshman class is a curious one in light of comments CBS CEO Les Moonves made earlier this month in which the exec revealed that “about five” of the network’s rookie series would be back next fall. The exec didn’t specify which quintet he was referring to, but when you eliminate the already- (and hastily) cancelled Angel From Hell, that leaves six freshman contenders: Supergirl, Code Black, Limitless, Life in Pieces and the just-launched Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and the about-to-launch Rush Hour.

The April 10 Season 2 finale will now serve as a series finale.

(Klarik will direct all Season 5 episodes.) “Showtime has been the opposite of every network we write about. If it were up to them we could go on making Episodes forever. But we’ve told the story we set out to tell, and we’d never want to outstay our welcome.”

A few days ahead of their respective season premieres, “Game of Thrones,” “Silicon Valley” and “Veep” have all been picked up for another year at HBO.
“Game of Thrones” will enter its seventh season in 2017, “Veep” its sixth and “Silicon Valley” its fourth. All three shows have season premieres on April 24.
In January, HBO president Michael Lombardo told reporters he was in talks with “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about a two-season pickup that would extend through Season 8. The channel apparently settled on just a one-year renewal for now, though an eighth season would hardly be a surprise considering it’s HBO’s top show.
