Wat een wonder. Er is daar natuurlijk ook geen persvrijheid. Ja, je hebt pakweg de Moscow Times die relatief veel vrijheid krijgen, want de normale Rus leest toch geen Engelstalige krant maar Poetin kan zo wel van "Kijk maar, er is wel kritische journalistiek hoor" zeggen. Rusland doet ook zo stiekem. Waarom vertellen ze niet openlijk dat de rebellen net zo gevaarlijk zijn als Russische bewapening ze kan maken (moeten we ook alvast rekening houden met WMDs/kernwapens?).quote:

Meth1945, vanaf het begin heb je de rebellen onderschat. Eerst dacht je dat het alledaagse protesterende burgers waren. Je dacht dat de aanwezigheid van de Russen Alexander Mozhaev (babay), Igor Girkin (Strelkov), Igor Bezler (Demon) niet duiden op enige Russische betrokkenheid. Nu blijken zij en andere Russen alle sleutelposities te bezetten. Rutte zou Strelkov moeten bellen om de doden lichamen te laten bergen.
Je vond niet dat ingrijpen redelijk was toen de eerste gebouwen werden bezet. Als Oekraine het toch deed, dreigde Moskou met een invasie, en ze hadden Poetin al een volmacht gegeven militair in te grijpen. Jij zag daarin geen enkel bewijs van inmenging. Evenmin was de annexatie van de Krim een annexatie.
Vind je het redelijk als we jouw beoordeling van de situatie voortaan negeren?

The government of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic will guarantee security to international experts who will work at the Boeing 777 crash site.
The Kiev authorities are stubborn in their desire to shift the blame for the Malaysian Boeing’s crash to the self-defense forces without having any proof except for cheap fakes, Andrei Purgin, the vice-premier of the Donetsk People’s Republic, wrote on the official website of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
“It has already become absolutely clear that the tragedy that claimed the lives of 300 people is the result of an inhumane plot, which could have been masterminded by various authors: the official authorities in Kiev; Ukraine’s hawkish generals or the leaders of the National Guard or the Right Sector movement which are acting at their own discretion. All of them have stained their hands with blood up to their elbows - the blood of civilians from Mariupol, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Snezhnyi and Donetsk,” Andrei Purgin stressed.
“The purpose of their plane plot is to convince the global community that the people of Donbas are criminals who do not deserve any indulgences; to get a carte blanche to free use of the ‘scorched earth’ tactics in the Donbas region; make international public turn a blind eye on mass extermination of people who are fighting for their freedom against forces that are personifying Nazism of the 21st century,” the vice-premier of the Donetsk People’s Republic said.
“There can be no other explanation for Kiev’s unwillingness to conclude at least temporary ceasefire to ensure full-fledged investigation into the air crash in which the citizens of third countries died,” Purgin went on to say.
He emphasized that the plane tragedy was the cause for disruption of a regular round of ceasefire consultations in which OSCE representatives were supposed to take part.
Purgin said that the fear of being exposed could be the only explanation for Kiev’s increasing military operation and unwillingness to send international experts to the crash site. The Kiev regime is referring to the danger of military hostilities which it itself is building up.
“The government of the Donetsk People’s Republic has always been ready to conclude ceasefire agreements, which the Ukrainian army has never observed in full measure. Every minute lived without fire preserves civilian lives,” Purgin emphasized.

Pushilin Resigns from 'Speaker' Position in 'Donetsk People's Republic'
He speculated that because Pushilin had become mixed up in the contacts with Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov as a "party of defeatists," along with Vostok Battalion leader Aleksarn Khodakovsky and others), he had to be removed. He said sources told him to expect the resignation of yet another highly-placed political figure in the DPR due to these contacts with Akhmetov.
"Pushilin's resignation means that Moscow is continuing work on improving the management of processes inside the military and political leadership of the DPR," he said laconically.

Earlier today we posted a statement from Igor Bezler, a GRU (Russian foreign military intelligence) officer and separatist commander in Gorlovka. He actually admits that the audio from a previous SBU leak where he talks about shooting down the plane was in fact real, but claims it was doctored and he was talking about shooting down a different plane.
While we know that the separatists have shot down plenty of planes, this incident proves something very significant. The separatist leadership is so panicked over this incident that in Bezler's attempt to distance the separatists from the shooting down of MH17 he accidentally admitted that the separatists are actively coordinating with Russian military intelligence (GRU) and that the audio being leaked by the SBU contains genuine intercepted phone conversations.

Ukraine intelligence officials said they knew three days before the downing of Malaysia Airlines 3786.KU -11.11% Flight 17 that rebels in the east of the country possessed sophisticated air-defense systems capable of felling a jetliner at altitudes in excess of where the Boeing BA +1.40% 777 was flying.
The disclosure deepens the mystery of why Ukrainian aviation officials failed to entirely close off the airspace in the Donetsk region, where the jet was flying went it was shot down, killing all 298 people on board.
Three Buk-M1 medium-range antiaircraft systems, also known as the SA-11 Gadfly under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization designation, were known to be in rebel hands as early as July 14, said Vitaly Nayda, the head of the counterintelligence division of Ukraine's security service. Ukraine imposed a partial flight ban in the region on flights below 26,000 feet on July 1, and raised the ceiling of the exclusion area to 32,000 feet on July 14. The Malaysia Airlines plane was flying at 33,000 feet.
The altitude restrictions on commercial flights were raised after rebel separatists backed by Moscow on July 14 shot down a Ukrainian military Antonov An-26 transport plane with eight people on board over the skies of the Luhansk region. The aircraft was flying at 21,000 feet.
"I can't think of any reason why you would increase a restriction to 32,000 feet when the bad boys have just demonstrated a capability to go all the way," said a European aviation safety veteran. The airspace should have been closed, he said.

Sancties

Doet Rusland dat niet, dan volgen dinsdag verdere sancties van de zijde van de Europese Unie. De drie grote EU-landen hadden daar zondag telefonisch contact over.
Dinsdag komen de ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken van de 28 lidstaten van de Europese Unie bijeen.
Vooral de Britse premier David Cameron haalde hard uit naar Poetin. In een artikel in de Britse krant The Sunday Times zei hij dat Europa te weinig tegen Rusland doet. ''Als president Poetin zijn omgang met Oekrane niet verandert, moeten Europa en het Westen onze omgang met Rusland veranderen'', aldus Cameron.

Poetin heeft er maandag ook bij de separatisten in Oost-Oekrane op aangedrongen experts toegang te verlenen tot de rampplek waar vlucht MH17 neerkwam.

Als het vliegtuig per ongeluk is neergeschoten, zijn de omstandigheden waarin dit soort ongelukken plaatsvinden van belang. En die vraag hangt samen met een aantal serieuze kwesties rond dit gewapende conflict. Hoe is het ontstaan en wie speelt daarin welke rol?
De kans is groot dat de rebellen per ongeluk dat vliegtuig hebben neergeschoten, vanuit het idee dat het een Oekrains militair vliegtuig is. Deze inschatting ligt in lijn met de feitelijke ontwikkeling van het conflict. Ik verwacht niet dat de zwarte doos daarin een nieuw feit aan het licht brengt.
De belangen van de betrokken spelers (Het Westen, Rusland, Oekrainie, bevolkingsgroepen, rebellen) is in dit conflict echter zo groot, dat ik veel politiek spin verwacht, zodat zelfs de simpelste dingen onduidelijk worden.
Neem het bovenstaande citaat. Is Rusland een geloofwaardige bemiddelaar, die bemiddelt in een intern Oekrains conflict tussen de rebellen en de Oekrainse regering? Of zijn de rebellen een proxy van Rusland (die ook Krim al geannexeerd heeft). Volgens mij is Rusland de partij dit het conflict aanstuurt en dus de hoofdschuldige. Niet alleen voor het passagiersvliegtuig, maar alle ellende daar.quote:

Ukrainian warplanes delivered an air strike by unguided rocket projectiles at the railway station in the city of Donetsk on Monday morning. Around six projectiles were fired. Railway tracks and a locomotive were damaged in projectile blasts. The marketplace is on fire. The mayor’s office noted that the bus terminal was closed and the traffic was restricted.
Defense Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic Igor Strelkov noted that “Ukrainian army units have broken into the settlement of Avdiivka and are moving to the railway station from there.”
“At the same time our positions are attacked near Peski, Karlivka and Netailove,” he said, adding that “Tanks and marines on armored infantry assault vehicles are used with massive support of artillery guns.”
It was reported earlier that Donetsk militias were fighting with Ukrainian army units near the missile formation outside Donetsk.

Het Russische ministerie van Defensie zegt dat vlucht MH17 boven Oekrane begeleid werd door een Oekraens gevechtsvliegtuig. De jager zou op 3 tot 5 kilometer afstand van het passagierstoestel hebben gevlogen. Volgens Moskou moet de regering in Kiev daarover uitleg geven.
Ook zegt het ministerie dat de Russen geen raket in de nabijheid van de Maleisische Boeing hebben waargenomen. De Russen vragen de Amerikanen om satellietbeelden ter beschikking te stellen waarop een raket te zien is, "als die beelden er al zijn".

De Russische militaire top spreekt bovendien tegen dat aan de geestverwanten in Rusland een BUK-raketsysteem of andere andere wapens geleverd zijn.
Volgens de Verenigde Staten en Oekrane is de raket die het vliegtuig trof afgeschoten van zo'n mobiele BUK-installatie, die geleverd was door Rusland, waarschijnlijk inclusief personeel dat hem kon bedienen.

Russia Claims A Ukrainian Su-25 Aircraft Was Tailing MH17 - But It Can't Fly That High
CNN reports that according to the Russian government a Ukrainian jet was tailing Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 before it was shot down.
According to the manufacturer of the Su-25, Sukhoi, the maximum altitude of the Su-25 carrying no external ordnance and stores is only 7 kilometers (7000 meters, 23,000 feet). MH17 was flying at 10,000 meters, about 33,000 feet. By this logic, even if the Su-25 was flying directly under MH17 it would be at least 3 kilometers away. How does that fit with the claims that the Russian government is making?quote:On Monday, Russian officials floated the possibility that a Ukrainian fighter jet might have downed the plane.
Russian monitoring showed a Ukrainian Su-25 fighter jet flying along the same route and within 3 kilometers to 5 kilometers (1.9 miles to 3.1 miles) of Flight 17, Lt. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov of the Russian Army General Staff said at a news conference, Russian state media reported.
"We would like to know why the Ukrainian plane was flying along a civilian route on the same flight path as the Malaysian Boeing," Kartapolov said, according to the reports.
Pro-Russian rebels have also denied responsibility for the shootdown.
In an interview with Cuomo broadcast Monday on CNN's "New Day," the self-declared rebel Prime Minister in Donetsk, Alexander Borodai, said he believed Ukrainian forces either shot the plane down with a surface-to-air missile or, as the Russian general suggested, one of its own fighter jets.
Russians Scramble To Edit Wikipedia So The Kremlin's Claims Make Sense
Today the Su-25 has been given some significant upgrades -- at least on Wikipedia. Several IP addresses that track back to central Moscow appear to have edited the maximum altitude of the Su-25 from 7 kilometers to 10 kilometers to match the flight path of MH17.
