They are basically Geordies that stayed where they were 1,500 years ago, and chilled out a bit more.
And they are good at football. Supporting Holland is a joyous thing – they might actually win a match, or at least look like they might. They don’t play like they are terrified of the ball, the grass, their team-mates and scoring a goal.
The problem with the Dutch has always been that they argue amongst themselves too much. At most major championships they play well for a bit, then start bickering about tiny nuances of formation, or just how orange their orange kit is, or whether PSV or Ajax are the true originators of ‘totaal voetbal’, or what they are doing on Queen’s Day.
But this time, they appear to be a united force, happy and focussed. They have left their manager, the irascible Louis van Gaal, to be the grumpy one.

He sounds like the perfect Englishman abroad, the kind of fella who sits in a Jacuzzi overlooking a tropical beach with a cocktail in his hand and complains about the umbrella in his drink. And where is Mr van Gaal going after Holland’s oranje odyssey? Manchester United. He’ll fit right in.
So get behind the Dutch, you’ve got to love them. They’ve got some great strikers and their main centre back is a chap called Ron Vlaar, which is the best name at the World Cup by far. Go Holland!

Het is dan ook volkomen flauwekul om een onervaren trainer bondscoach te maken. Nu doen ervaren trainers als Del Bosque, Hodgson en Capello het niet per se goed. Maar ik denk wel dat de KBVB een fout maakte met de aanstelling van WIlmots. Had hem dan eerst assistent gemaakt voor dit WK en het volgende EK.
Die Lebenslust bringt dich um.

Supporting the Dutch in an international tournament is like going on the most horrifying roller coaster of your life.
It's full of anticipation, new heights and an inevitable free fall. As the ride ends, you feel nauseous, exhausted and completely spent. Your ears are ringing, and there's a specific type of numbness that's somehow able to reverberate through your entire body. It informs you that whatever positives were gained through this experience, it was simply not worth the taste of your heart in the back of your throat.
Then, you take two steps away, and the only thing your body can think to do is line up once again for the very same ride.
While fans of almost every single nation feel as though the experience supporting their side is the most traumatic — your tears are no good here, Brazilians — there's some objective evidence behind Dutch claims that they're the most worthy of pity.
This is their tenth World Cup. They've never won.
This, in and of itself, shouldn't elicit compassion. Only eight nations have won a World Cup, and FIFA recognizes 209 national associations. The odds are against everybody, and that's what makes the event so enthralling.
The Dutch World Cup experience is especially miserable because they've come so close, so many times.
They've lost in the final in a third of their trips to the tournament. Four of their nine eliminations have come after 90 minutes, either through extra time or penalties. Before Saturday's quarterfinal victory over Costa Rica on penalties, the Dutch had never won a World Cup match that went to extra time. They've lost twice in finals after 90 minutes, and once in the semifinals on penalties.
Fate is at its cruelest only when a brief glimpse of the greatest possible outcome is given, then taken away so decisively as to render one incapable of imagining anything other than what could have been.
The Dutch have gone through this on three different occasions.
For all of the talk in the lead up to this tournament of coach Louis van Gaal doing away with the 4-3-3 that had been such a staple of sides from the Netherlands since totaalvoetbal, he seems to have ditched the formation and adopted every other principle of the famous footballing philosophy.
No side has appeared as flexible with its roster or formation as the Dutch, who completed more passes in the first 20 minutes against Costa Rica than they did during the entirety of their match against Chile in the Group Stage.
They've constantly utilized players out of their normal position, and used the same player to fill multiple positions over the course of a match. They've shifted formation, not only match-to-match, but between attacking and defending within the same contest in the same game state.
It's all added up to offer supporters a version of sweet torture, playing their opponents rather than playing a match. It's also offered advancement.
There's perhaps no better example of the Dutch positional flexibility than Dirk Kuyt, who played right wing-back, right midfielder and left wing on Saturday. During the Round of 16 match against Mexico, Kuyt started at left wing-back, moved to right wing-back, then pushed up to a right forward before moving to take a more central forward role, only to finish the match as a right back after the Netherlands went ahead.
We've also seen the forward attackers fulfil multiple roles, most notably Arjen Robben's transition from roving striker up front to a straight out right winger late in matches. Daley Blind has played as a left wing-back and a central midfielder, while Bruno Martins Indi has moved seamlessly between centreback and fullback depending on where players are in front of him.
There's a sense that this is all the result of a mad scientist, and it's not far off from reality. Once again, we saw van Gaal's willingness to go against tradition by substituting starting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen for Tim Krul with seconds remaining in extra time on Saturday. While the Newcastle 'keeper was championed as the penalty kick expert, his results against shots from the spot would suggest anything else.
More important than a nickname, Krul wasn't Cillessen. Any preparation Costa Rica might have undertaken ahead for penalties was immediately rendered moot. Then, to make matters worse for Los Ticos, Krul was at his brashest before each kick. He strutted around, talked to those about to take the shot, and most importantly, dove the right way against every taker, stopping two.
What does it all mean? This Dutch team — even as it calls on the ideals of its past — isn't like the ones that came before. It's free from the shackles of an overarching philosophy, free from the indoctrinating past. It uses every squad member based on their own capabilities.
If that's run 12 kilometers up and down the flanks in stifling heat, they're in the lineup. If that's utilizing the elements of surprise and intimidation, they're a last minute substitute. And if that's an ability to play left back and central defensive midfielder, then they're going to be called upon to do both.
They're capable of playing counter football against attacking opponents, or playing a possession based game against sides that are more prone to sitting back.

His replacement, Dante (Bayern Munich), is a very good defender and knows the German team well, but he has not played in this World Cup. Additionally, outside backs Maicon, Dani Alves and Marcelo will be severely tested by the Germans. Brazil's holding midfielders, Paulinho, Fernandinho and Ramires, have done a good job in offering cover for the center-backs and attacking players in Brazil's 4-2-3-1 formation.
The Germans have a quality team with technical, tactical and physical skills, plus great experience. Germany is the first country to qualify for four consecutive World Cup semifinals.
Manuel Neuer is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world. The Germany backline was solidified once Coach Joachim Loew returned Philipp Lahm to his natural position of right-back. Lahm, with Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Benedikt Howedes, make up one of the best backlines in the tournament. The Germans know how to close out games, as evidenced by their three shutouts in five games.
The German attack is led by striker Thomas Mueller (four goals), supported by capable attacking players in Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze, Lukas Podolski, Andre Schurrle, and Miroslav Klose. Midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos are quality players on offense and defense.
Overall, Germany is the best "team" remaining in this tournament. It is well coached, talented and typically starts six or seven players from the same club team (Bayern Munich). The Brazilian team has been inconsistent and has looked disjointed on defense and not very lethal on offense. It has the advantage of tremendous support in the stands, but is feeling overwhelming pressure as the host country and must deal with the loss of Neymar. The Germans are mentally strong and physically and tactically prepared for this game and I believe they will beat Brazil and advance to the final.
The other semifinal game, on Wednesday, has Argentina playing the Netherlands. Argentina is led by arguably the best player in the world, Lionel Messi, who is having an outstanding tournament (four goals) for the only team to have won all five of its games. Argentina is criticized for being too dependent on Messi, and the loss of the injured Angel Di Maria weakens the team on offense.
Argentina plays a version of a 4-4-2, with Messi floating underneath striker Gonzalo Higuain. Messi will need his teammates to be scoring threats or he will face the likelihood of seeing three opponents whenever he touches the ball. Fortunately for Argentina, it appears that the injured attacker Sergio Aguero will play and Higuain, who scored the winning goal versus Belgium, should be a more confident player versus the Netherlands.
So far the strength of Argentina has been its defense, giving up only three goals in the tournament. Goalkeeper Sergio Romero has led a solid backline. However, I believe the defensive play of central midfielders Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia are the keys to Argentina's defense. For Argentina to win, it will need another outstanding defensive effort, coupled with the magic of Messi.
The Netherlands has had a very interesting tournament. It manhandled defending champion Spain, 5-1, in the opening game of group play, and completed the group with three victories. In the knockout games against Mexico (2-1, two late goals) and Costa Rica (0-0, 4-3 penalty shootout), it barely managed to win despite being the dominant team in both games.

Robben has been as good as any attacking player in this tournament and is the key to this Dutch team. Playing out of a 3-4-3 formation, the team has been very good on defense and dangerous going forward. I think this balance will create problems for Argentina.
This game is a toss-up and could go to penalties, which would favor the Netherlands and its shootout specialist goalkeeper, Tim Krul. Therefore, I'm picking the Netherlands to advance to a second consecutive World Cup final.
So in a highly unpredictable tournament, I see an all-European World Cup with Germany against the Netherlands on July 13.

(CNN) -- All eyes will be on Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben when Argentina face the Netherlands in the World Cup semifinal in Sao Paulo to discover who will meet Germany in the final.
The Dutch will be looking to their mercurial winger to steer them to a second successive World Cup final while Argentina will likely need some Messi magic if they are to reach a first final in 24 years.
Both men have been central to the success of their sides so far in the competition earning glowing tributes from team managers past and present.
Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella said his midfield maestro was like "water in the desert" following his side's 1-0 victory over Belgium in the quarterfinals.
"Each time he gets the ball, it represents hope for all of us and a threatening situation for our opponents," Sabella told reporters after the game.
"Regardless of whether he scores goals or not, his influence is decisive. A game has many aspects, apart from goals.
"When you have a player such as Messi, who never, or almost never, loses the ball, it's water in the desert and not just when he scores."
Dutch praise for Robben has been equally fulsome.
Former Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, who steered the Oranje to the final in 2010, believes Robben may be a better player than the Barcelona midfielder.
"Argentina have got Messi, we've got Robben. And quite frankly, I think the better player is Arjen," van Marwijk told Dutch broadcaster NOS TV.
"Four years ago, Arjen was injured just before the start of the tournament in a friendly against Hungary. He was carrying the injury for the whole tournament and was never really 100%. But this year he's been unstoppable."
Current teammate Dirk Kuyt has also lauded the Bayern Munich star's contribution in Brazil.
"I wouldn't swap Robben for any player in the world," Kuyt told FIFA.com earlier in the tournament.
"He is having an amazing World Cup. He's scored goals and created goals, he's so fast and he is a very important player for us."
Three goals and one assist at the finals attest to Robben's value, though he's also attracted plenty of criticism for his theatrical habit of going down in the penalty area during the tournament.
Coach Louis van Gaal will need the 30-year-old to put in a flawless performance if the Dutch are to progress.
As Sabella has hinted, two-time champions Argentina are perhaps even more reliant on Messi.
The 27-year-old has scored half of Argentina's eight goals in the competition so far.
With Angel di Maria ruled out with a thigh injury, strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero (if passed fit) will be relying on Messi more than ever to set them free in front of goal.

The 62-year-old, who will take over as manager at English Premier League side Manchester United after the World Cup finishes, has won plaudits for some cunning substitutions during the finals.
The introduction of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar late in the game against Mexico helped turn the tide in the European side's favor.
