It’s Not Unusual… to have lines fed: Sir Tom Jones admits The Voice coaches were told what to say in first series
Welsh crooner Tom Jones has revealed that he and his fellow coaches were often fed lines in the first series of The Voice just in case they were ever lost for words.
Speaking ahead of the second series which begins this weekend, the 72-year-old admitted that while he used to try and work in the lines he was given, he often felt ‘self-conscious.’
However this year Tom, who will be joined once again by fellow coaches Jessie J, Will.i.am and Danny O'Donoghue, says ‘it feels more natural.’
Opening up to The Radio Times, he said: ‘I feel like I know what I am doing this time and it feels more natural.
Last year we were given suggested lines just in case we got stuck, which I tried to work in on a few occasions.
‘But even when I tried to say them naturally I knew that they weren't me and felt self-conscious. I have learnt now that I don't have to do that, I can just say what I feel.’
The Delilah singer said that he trusted his instinct but asked whether all his gambles had paid off, he replied: ‘Maybe my pants were a little too tight when I was younger! I think, 'My God, they were a bit much'. I didn't realise I was creating a monster.’
Last series the vintage singer took his act Leanne Mitchell to the final of the show, which she won.
The silver fox revealed that he had been using his previous victory as a tool to get acts on his team this year.
However while Leanne might have won the show her career hasn’t got off the best of starts after her single Run to You, only reached number 45 in the charts.
The Sex Bomb singer’s fellow judge Will.i.am has hit out at Universal for their handling of the situation.
He told Digital Spy: ‘I don't think people were considering today's behaviour and how we digest content. It was television five years ago. I hope we've learned from that because I'm part of this show.I hope the label that the artists have to go with have learned from it,
‘So with this year's winner, we already have songs ready to go. The label need to have an understanding of what the market is thirsting for and yearning for.’
Meanwhile Jessie J, who recently shaved her head for charity, has shared her opinion about the negative feedback The Voice received last year, she said: 'If things were that bad we wouldn't be here celebrating the second series.
'And I definitely wouldn't be sitting in the chair if it was that bad and it wasn't credible and it wasn't a music show that celebrates singing, not ridicules people.
'Everyone wants to compare but the fact is The Voice is like nothing else. It isn't. There's nothing else like it, there's no bullying, there's no pointing and laughing, there's no editing to make it look like the person was horrific.'
