Chaleo Yoovidhya, de Thaise medeoprichter van Red Bull is zaterdag op 89-jarige leeftijd overleden in Bangkok, dat maakte Red Bull bekend. In 1987 richtte hij samen met de Oostenrijker Dietrich Mateschitz de energiedrank Red Bull op. Sinds 2005 is de onderneming eigenaar van het Red Bull Racing Formule 1-team.

Na een aantal jaren sponsoring in autosport nam de onderneming in 2005 het Formule 1-team van Jaguar over en ging verder als Red Bull Racing. Het team pakte in 2010 en 2011 zowel de titel voor de rijders als die van de teams. Daarnaast nam de onderneming ook het team van Minardi over en komt het sinds 2006 ook uit als Scuderia Toro Rosso, wat gezien wordt als het junior team van Red Bull Racing.

Yoovidyha had net als Mateschitz 49 procent van de aandelen in handen. De overige 2 procent behoren tot een zoon van Yoovidhya. Inmiddels wordt het drankje in 70 landen verkocht. Volgens het Amerikaanse blad Forbes had hij een vermogen van ongeveer 3,8 miljard euro en was daarmee de op één na rijkste Thai. Yoovidyha is aan ouderdom gestorven en laat elf kinderen na.

Ik denk dat ik morgen de sky uitzending maar download... Het moeten aanhoren van Olav Mol wil ik zo lang mogelijk uitstellen en een stream kijken is geen oplossing voor de hele race. Lag met mijn 10'' laptop in bed en zelfs dan is die stream al zo gaar dat je geeneens de namen van de tijdwaarneming aan de linkerkant van je scherm fatsoenlijk kan lezen.

Heikki Kovalainen heeft een vijf startplaatsen straf gekregen voor de race in Maleisië, volgende week op Sepang. De Fin werd bestraft in verband met een incident achter de safety car tijdens de eerste race van het seizoen in Australië.

De Caterham-coureur besloot aan het einde van de eerste ronde achter de safety car zijn pitstop te maken. Toen hij de pits inreed, haalde hij echter in voordat hij de safety car-lijn bij de ingang van de pitstraat gepasseerd was. De regel is dat niemand mag inhalen achter de safety car, of voor de safety car-lijn als hij terugkeert naar de pitstraat.

De wedstrijdleiding heeft besloten om de Fin vijf plaatsen straf te geven na de kwalificatie van de volgende race in Maleisië. Via Twitter liet Kovalainen weten dat hij de straf erg zwaar vindt. De Fin wist de race uiteindelijk niet uit te rijden.

A few team insiders speculated that it might involved Ferrari and Red Bull signing up to a new Concorde Agreement, and Sky News has reported something along similar lines tonight with the suggestion that those teams will have a stake in the ownership of the sport via the new 2013-2020 deal.

This would be linked to a public offering of a sale of part of CVC’s stake in F1, which Sky says will be placed by Goldman Sachs and which values the sport at “well over £10bn.” Another recent report suggested that any available shares will be those currently owned by Lehman Brothers, which has a 15.3% stake.

Sky reports that Ferrari as usual has a special position as the oldest team in the sport, and there’s extra cash for the first team to have won consecutive constructors’ titles since 2008, the team in question being Red Bull.

There is also mention of single car customer teams for new entrants.

A Ferrari/RBR deal is certainly logical, and if true the next question has to be what deal did or will those teams get as the first signatories, and what is available to everyone else – the FOTA members, essentially. We await developments with interest…

Note: Intriguingly the Sky News story, which was a blog by business editor Mark Kleinman, has seemingly now disappeared from the website after being up for only a few hours on Saturday evening UK time. That is perhaps not surprising given that it contained what appeared to be extracts from legal documents that one might assume were not supposed to be in the public domain…

Mar.19 (GMM) Many team bosses reportedly left the Melbourne paddock angry late on Sunday, amid claims Ferrari and Red Bull have agreed special deals for F1's future beyond the current Concorde Agreement.

Rumours of the top teams' deal - part of a reportedly planned $10 billion stock market floatation of the sport - began to swirl following the publication and then retraction of a Sky News internet report.

The report was reportedly based on a leaked copy of the draft 2013 Concorde Agreement, which according to London's Telegraph newspaper "could hand Ferrari a direct stake in the sport".

Red Bull, the reigning champions, "also stand to make a huge sum", the report claimed, adding that the energy drink-owned team as well as Ferrari will be asked to nominate directors for F1's holding company board.

Team boss Christian Horner revealed Red Bull is "in discussions with FOM" about a new Concorde Agreement, adding that talks are "progressing reasonably well".

How the other major teams - like FOTA members McLaren and Mercedes - fit into the picture is unclear at present, but the Times newspaper reports that there are "no seats" at the boardroom table allocated for them.

An unnamed senior team executive described the rumoured special deals for Ferrari and Red Bull as "outrageous" and "against every facet of European competition law".

Ferrari declined to comment.

Horner added: "We want one (a Concorde Agreement) which reaches into the future ... a floatation is really down to the shareholders.

"It is not really the teams' business," he added. "It is more of a question for Bernie (Ecclestone) or CVC."

Many paddock insiders, however, believe the deals are already done in principle, leading one angry rival team boss to blast: "Formula one stopped being about racing a long time ago".

"There will be an end game to this," he added. "We just have to figure out what it is and what it means for the people in the teams who want to go racing and not be involved in this kind of thing."

Lotus and Red Bull are keen to get a final ruling on the legality of DRS-activated f-ducts ahead of this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, amid the ongoing row over the Mercedes design.

Both teams met with the FIA's Charlie Whiting over the Australian GP weekend to express their belief that the concept used on the Mercedes rear wing is in breach of regulations that prevent driver-activated aerodynamic devices.

The Mercedes design features a hole on the inside of the rear wing endplate, which is covered when the DRS is not in use but uncovered when the DRS wing lifts up.

It is understood that this hole ducts air all the way through to the front wing - where it escapes through slots in the underside to help stall it for a straight-line speed boost.

Both Lotus and Red Bull considered the possibility of a protest against the Mercedes in Australia, but elected against doing so for now because they preferred to try and sort the matter out behind closed doors.

Lotus team principal Eric Boullier said though that the next few days would be key to trying to resolve the matter in an amicable way.

"We are still talking with Charlie," Boullier told AUTOSPORT. "Of course we did not do anything here [in Australia], but we just want to have a fair understanding.

"It would have been the wrong thing to spoil the race result to be honest, so the plan is to wait for next week. Let's see what happens."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner added: "I think that there are different interpretations of the rear wing of the Mercedes. We have had some discussions with Charlie, and we chose not to protest it this weekend.

"There were other teams who were perhaps even more animated than we were, but I think it is something that we just want clarity on because one could argue that it is a switch that is affected by the driver.

"The driver hits the button and it uncovers the hole - so therefore it is driver activated, which would not be in compliance with the regulations. I think there will be a whole load of debate about it during the next five days."

Horner said that if the FIA stands firm in its belief the system is legal, then it would likely lead to teams needing to embark on a costly development push to introduce their own versions.

"It is a clever system and hats off to them for doing it, but the most important thing for us is - is it OK?" he said.

"The frustrating thing with all these systems is that it will undoubtedly be banned for next year, but in the meantime are we all going to go off and chase the idea.

"Inevitably there would be a considerable amount of cost involved. It would be a development that the front teams would look at, but it might be something that is prohibitively expensive for the smaller teams."

Vettel: "Hij is daarna gewoon scheef aan elkaar gezet."
"Helaas weet ik zeker dat we die kromme vinger dit jaar een paar keer zullen zien", was de Engelsman in Melbourne echter wel realistisch. Button: "Maar we zullen er alles aan doen dat zoveel mogelijk te verhinderen."
