(Adriasang)quote:It's well known now that Sony will be having a big Tokyo press event on the 27th where it will unveil the PlayStation Portable 2. An analyst has clued us in to the event's name: "PlayStation Meeting."
Sony used to have PlayStation Meeting events periodically, but Thursday's installment will be the first event with the name in six years.
The last time Sony had a PlayStation Meeting was July 25, 2005. Then CEO Ken Kutaragi outlined Sony's PlayStation 3 plans through slides (see this story at IGN for a recap), Namco Bandai showed a live demonstration of what would become its terrible PS3 Gundam launch game, and we first heard the title "Lair" for Factor 5's new PS3 game. (There's a full index of happenings at IGN).
Analyst Yasuaki Fujima mentioned the PlayStation Meeting name in a Tweet earlier this week. He said that we can probably expect unexpected major announcements simply because the timing of the event comes ahead of Sony's third quarter earnings announcement, which is scheduled for February 3. He also added that it's possible to view the event as Sony's means of dealing with the 3DS by turning the attention onto itself.
The revival of the PlayStation Meeting name sounds like a perfect occasion to take the lid of PlayStation Portable's successor.

Details on new system leak out via Japanese newspaper.

An old fan rendering of what a new PSP could potentially look like. Most current reports indicate that the system will not have a sliding design.
Nikkei has some preliminary details on Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable system.
According to the paper, the new system will have 3G support. In Japan, the 3G service will be provided by NTT DoCoMo.
Using the 3G connection, gamers will be able to play online games and download software and movies. The service will not allow for phone calls.
The system will also have standard wireless LAN, of course. However, the 3G support will allow players to connect online wherever DoCoMo has wireless service. DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile carrier.
Separate from the wireless functionality, the paper reports that the new PSP will make use of an OLED touch screen which will be larger than normal. Regarding the system's internals, the paper reports that Sony has developed a new processor for handling high resolution visuals.
Pricing on the next generation PSP is currently TBA, according to the paper. The paper does not mention possible subscription fees associated with the 3G service, or the possibility of a Wi-Fi only model.
The paper also makes brief mention of the device that many are calling "Playstation Phone," a smart phone that includes game features. This will have button-based controls, the paper reports, making games control easier. The device will use Google's Android operating system and will allow users to access non-game software like video and scheduling software.
Sony is expected to take the veil off the new PSP system at a press conference on the 27th. The PlayStation cell phone device is expected to be unveiled next month.

quote:Rumor: The First Official Shot Of The PSP2?
While the PSP2 is not yet official, there have been fan Photoshop creations. Apparently, this is not a fan-made creation. Apparently, this is a Sony-made one. But is it?
Granted, this could very well be another slick Photoshop, but this week Sony is expected to unveil the new PlayStation Portable, which is currently being called the PSP2. As the reveal approaches, this art work surfaced online today on 2ch, Japan's largest online forum.
The photo features a handheld believed to be the PSP2, which has a PSPgo style sliding shell. There is a 32 GB SD memory card as well, plus a "PSP2" Memory Stick. There is a long, thin stylus as well. According to Japan's Nikkei newspaper, the PSP2 will have a touch screen. Unlike the current PSP, there are two analog nubs, giving this handheld a controller layout similar to the PS3.
What is fishy about the picture is that it appears to be a photograph of a handout of some kind. While handouts may be present at the January 27 press conference, it's also a good way for a Photoshopper to hide their work, as it masks any differences in resolution you'd be able to detect in an online image.
Official Sony art is typically at a higher resolution, but this art is not, which also sends off alarm bells. The buttons and the d-pad look to be at a slightly different resolution. The copyright in the bottom left, which appears on official Sony images, is cut off, too. Likewise, odd. However, as mentioned above, this purported PSP2 image could be photo taken of official Sony art or of an official Sony handout, hence these resolution inconsistencies.
The memory stick in this photo looks more akin to the Memory Stick Sony previously used and not the Memory Sticks currently in production, further throwing doubt on its authenticity. The thumbsticks are in a different location from photos that appeared last fall of what is supposedly the PSP2.
Last October, Kotaku broke the news that the PSP2 will ditch the UMD format and could very well rival the Xbox 360 in horsepower. Kotaku also reported then that the PSP2 will have dual analog sticks, a touch pad, a bigger screen and go on sale in fall 2011.
Whether or not it is real, won't be known for sure if and when the rumored PSP2 is finally made public. However, Kotaku is reaching out to Sony and will update this post should the company comment.

In a few years mobile phones will inevitably catch up in power to the NGP (especially being that Sony is using ARM and SGX cores). Sony fully knows this and anticipates it.
The point isn't to fight the mobile market, like Nintendo, its rather to integrate itself within it. When mobile phones do ultimately catch up, Android phones can gain have the ability to play NGP games much like the Xperia Play thru the "Playstation certified" process. As the specifications evolve on phones, what they are able to play will evolve with it. At first it'll be PS1, PSP games, later smart phones will play recompiled PS2 re-releases and NGP games. So we're seeing the specifications of the "Playstation" brand become more nebulous.
This is a unique niche that their competitors can't capitalize off of. Apple is heavily invested in the iOS, Microsoft in Windows Phone 7, Nintendo is too far removed from integrating its platform with smartphones due to its 3D screen and dual-screen platform.
Sony will benefit from getting its platform onto millions of Android devices (Android sells 5 million units a month). Phone makers benefit from having their device play Playstation games. Developers benefit from massive and persistent user base that spans beyond a single generational device from a single brand.

No video out. Wi-Fi only versions under consideration. System uses original OS.

Sony's new portable system, codenamed NGP.
Impress Watch has posted a summary of a roundtable interview conducted with Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai. In the post PlayStation Meeting 2011 interview session, Hirai shared lots of new details on Sony's new NGP portable gaming system.
One of the major points from the interview is that Hirai acknowledged that there are plans for multiple versions of the hardware, including Wi-Fi only versions and 3G + Wi-Fi versions. Such hardware developments will be made on a region-by-region basis, he said.
Regarding 3G, Hirai said that Sony is currently in discussions with different carriers in the various territories about such things as rate plans and fees. They will announce specifics when available.
3G through NGP will not allow for phone use. Hirai said that it would be "nonsense" to use a device of this shape as a phone. Because it would require a headset or changes to form factor, they left out any such phone functionality.
The interview touched upon a number of other topics outside of 3G.
Hirai said that price and battery time information cannot be revealed at present because the system is still in the prototype phases. He said Sony is aiming for levels that will be well received by customers.
As announced at PlayStation meeting, the NGP is compatible with PSP software. PSP titles will run completely through emulation, said Hirai.
Of course, you'll only be able to use downloadable versions of PSP games. Sony is currently in negotiations to get software makers to actively release download versions of their games.
Those who already have downloadable PSP titles on their PSP system will be able to redownload them to NGP, assuming you're still within the download number limits imposed by PSN.
Internally, NGP uses an original games-oriented operating system, revealed Hirai. It's not Android. Different from the PSP, the OS has a modern framework akin to a PC.
Package PSP games will ship on a custom memory card format. This is basically a ROM, but it has rewritable space which can be used for save data and download data. Hirai said to think of it as similar to the memory cards used by the Nintendo DS.
NGP will also support general memory cards, a Sony representative told Impress. Specific formats were not mentioned. The site did not make clear what "support" means.
Separate from the Hirai interview, the Impress Watch story says that the NGP in its current form will not support video output. The site was told this by a Sony representative.

One attendee, speaking to Eurogamer this morning under condition of anonymity, said: "NGP is a developer's dream – Sony is finally doing the things developers have been crying out for for years."
quote:Sony has not yet dated the system beyond plans to begin rollout worldwide by the end of 2011. But during yesterday's presentation, Sony listed the Wi-Fi only edition of NGP as "2011", while the Wi-Fi plus 3G version was listed as "Holiday Season 2011", implying that the 3G-enabled console would not be available day one.

The source said the latter was "the WipEout HD PS3 engine running on PS3 with no changes to the art platform. That means full resolution, full 60 frames per second. It looks exactly the same as it does on PS3 – all the shader effects are in there".
quote:With Sony urging developers to create releases that work across PS3 and NGP, the implications of this are significant. "They want us to do cross-platform," said the source, explaining that the submission process has been streamlined, with only a single submission required for a title on PSN and NGP.
quote:However, Sony is also insisting that it "does not want exactly the same game" on NGP and PS3 – there "has to be a reason for the NGP title". "They want at least some kind of interactivity between the two versions with NGP-only extras," the source added.
http://www.eurogamer.net/(...)rge-at-private-eventquote:"Any shaders for PS3 stuff will just work," said the source. "We won't have to rewrite. What would have taken two-to-three months before looks like it could take just one-to-two weeks now. The architecture is obviously different, but it's the same development environment."

(Eurogamer)quote:At a Game Developers Conference session, Sony has moved to dispel the myth that its Next Generation Portable could rival PS3 for processor performance.
David Coombes, a platform research manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, explained that although the NGP is equipped with a high-performance quad-core CPU theoretically capable of 2GHz, the clock speeds will have to be dialled down in order to preserve the PSP successor's battery life and prevent it from running too hot.
"Some people in the press have said wow, this thing... could be as powerful as PS3. Well, it's not going to run at 2GHz because the battery would last five minutes," he said. "And it would probably set fire to your pants."
In his engineering-themed tour of the NGP's features, Coombes shed some extra light on the handheld's specifications and performance.
He mentioned that the game cards - the solid state physical media on which NGP games will be available in shops - would come in 2GB and 4GB sizes.
NGP games will therefore have a maximum size of 4GB. He compared this to the 9GB size of a typical PS3 game on Blu-ray, or the 10MB size of an average mobile phone game.
Coombes couldn't reveal how much memory NGP will have, but stressed that it was more than enough. "I can't talk about actual numbers, but compared to PSP we have a lot of memory... we're closer to PS3 than PSP in terms of memory size."
NGP will come in two versions: one with wi-fi, and one equipped with both wi-fi and 3G network connectivity. Coombes explained that only the wi-fi plus 3G version would also be equipped with GPS sensors. However, "wi-fi only can still do quite accurate positioning" thanks to Skyhook, a positioning service that works out your location by cross-referencing the wireless hotspots in range with a worldwide databse. "In urban areas, it's more accurate than GPS," he said.
Location-based features would include "treasure hunts" for virtual items in the real world, Coombes said, although these won't be implemented until after launch.
He revealed that NGP's front touch screen and rear touch pad could detect how hard players were pressing on them. Rather than using pressure sensors, this "analogue strength reading" would be achieved by detecting how large a surface area of the player's fingertips were pressed against the screen.
Speaking of the device's beautiful 5-inch screen, Coombes boasted that with its 960x544 resolution and anti-aliasing turned on - 4xMSAA, Digital Foundry fans - "you really can't see the pixels on the screen, which is pretty nice."
Also at the panel, Tsutomu Horikawa, a director from Sony Computer Entertainment International's software solution development department in Tokyo, performed an augmented reality demonstration in which the NGP visualised a giant dinosaur - the T-rex famous from the original PlayStation's first graphics demo - in the aisle of the lecture theatre.
He stepped down from the stage, and craned upwards with the NGP in his hands to view the dinosaur towering above him.

Forget what you've heard about Japan getting it first – third party licensees insist that NGP will arrive in Europe this year.
Sources have told MCV that development deadlines have been set to ensure key Western releases are finished before the end of the summer for deployment in the autumn.
Online leaks even suggest the console will launch on Friday, November 11th. This would make the hardware roll-out for the follow-up to PSP Sony’s first simultaneous global games hardware launch.
When Sony first revealed the device in January boss Kaz Hirai said the launch would see NGP "begin rolling out this year".
However, SCEA boss Jack Tretton moved quickly to calm those hopes saying that "it's very difficult to have the quantities to be able to launch on a worldwide basis on the same date" and that "our goal is get at least one territory out by the end of holiday 2011".

Bloomberg are reporting that the launch of Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP), which was originally supposed to launch by the end of 2011, might be affected due to the recent earthquakes in Japan, which have caused disruptions in production of the devices.
According to Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, the system might now only make it out in a single region by the end of the year. Tretton didn’t specify which region this would be, however.
“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’” Tretton said to Bloomberg in a recent interview. However, he added that, on the upside, a delayed launch could give developers “in certain regions” more time to complete their software.

The RG will run Android, though which version is anyone’s guess at the moment. The CPU is stated to be running at 1GHZ and though the actual chip isn’t listed, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an ARM Cortex A8 since they are cheap now and still relatively powerful.
Now don’t get too excited. WIFI, as well as 3G, GPS and any other added extras like that are said to be supported, meaning they’ll perhaps work via a dongle in the USB port somewhere on the unit. The screen is to be a capacitive 800×480 OLED at 5 inches across. The D pad looks like crap, so let’s hope they change it before mass production.

quote:Rumour Time: NGP’s Official Name Revealed
The ‘NGP’. The ‘Next Generation Portable’. The ‘PSP2’.
These are all synonyms for the successor of the PSP. But what is the final name?
The NGP was officially announced in January of this year. The release of the PSP successor itself wasn’t a big shock. We all knew it had to come eventually. The real shock was the specs of the device, which was essentially credited as a PS3 Portable with similar graphics.
After the announcement it became a tad silent around the NGP as Sony is waiting on the E3 to announce more.
But today we received some new, and exclusive, information from an anonymous source.
The official name of the NGP! Rumor has it that the new Sony handheld will bear the name PS Vita. Vita is Latin/Italian for ‘life’. Does Sony hope to bring life back into their stock? Do they want to rejuvenate the PSP? Revitalize your needs for portable gaming?
Our source tells us that this will be the definite and final name of the new system Sony will bring out at the end of 2011. Sony is expected to give further announcements on the E3 next week. In my opinion this is a very surprising name. Mainly because it will be the first innovative name Sony is using for any of its consoles/handhelds.
P.S. Please remember to take this with a grain of salt and this is NOT fake information that we have made up. The source cannot be proven reliable, of course, but this site was not set up with the intention of getting hits with bogus information. Other sites may do this but to be honest, I think that’s pretty sad. To reiterate, please don’t take this as fact and look to E3 for the final name; hopefully we’ll have it right! The above is of course still speculation and rumours and we have no confirmation as of yet but we will have some soon.

quote:By far the most exciting was Uncharted: Golden Abyss (above), a new episode in the Uncharted franchise, which takes place chronologically before Drake's Fortune (although Sony emphasised it isn't a prequel). Graphically, it lost little in comparison with the familiar PS3 Uncharted games, employing the same third-person viewpoint and richly detailed environments, as well as some great lighting effects.
quote:WipEout 2048 looked similarly impressive: the huge screen's sheer number of pixels and sharp contrasts create the illusion of greater crispness than you would get from a TV. WipEout 2048 felt a bit more forgiving than its famously tough predecessors, and let you choose between three control systems, one of which used the tilt sensor for turning (the sensitivity of which was spot-on) and the rear touch pad to accelerate.
quote:Little Deviants is a collection of 30-plus mini-games clearly designed to give each one of the NGP's features a thorough work-out. It included a variation on Whack-A-Mole in which you had to touch the front or back of the unit according to which direction Deviants revealed behind doors were facing, and a robot-shooting game which used the gyro-sensor for aiming, much like the 3DS's Face Raiders.
quote:Sound Shapes is an intriguing 2D platformer which has music built into its gameplay: as you traverse levels, you collect objects that build up a soundtrack with, for example, pulsing lasers providing the beat. It also incorporates a LittleBigPlanet-style level editor which should prove popular. Reality Fighters, meanwhile, is an augmented reality beat-'em-up game, which lets you scan your face onto a fighter, then use your surroundings as a fight arena. Sony's in-house launch lineup is completed by a clutch of games familiar from the PlayStation Network, including Super Stardust Delta, Everybody's Golf and Hustle Kings.
Yoshida over de handheld:quote:We approached the NGP with scepticism – the once-exciting PSP seemed to become increasingly irrelevant with each iteration, culminating in the unmitigated disaster that was the PSPgo. But this new model restored our faith in Sony's ability to make handheld consoles.
quote:It is sensibly designed – Yoshida admitted that with the PSPgo: "We made it our highest priority to make the unit small and portable, but that wasn't what people really wanted." And its peripheral bells and whistles – the cameras, motion sensors and touch-sensitive screen and rear pad – give developers just the ammunition they crave in their collective quest to unearth new forms of gaming.
http://www.guardian.co.uk(...)ands-on-back-in-gamequote:Yoshida admitted that the PSP suffered when Sony launched the PS3, claiming most of its development resources, but was adamant that: "Going forward, we do not want to make the same mistake"
Verder een interessante interview met Yoshida over o.a. wat ze zoal geleerd hebben met de PSP en het niet zozeer willen concurreren met smartphones.quote:Sony's NGP will offer full backwards compatibility with the PlayStation Network's library of PSP games, and will offer an optimized experience for each one.
PSP games played with the NGP will be smoothed and upscaled, and the NGP's dual analogue sticks will also be supported.
Sony Bend's Resistance Retribution has been demonstrated working on the NGP, with the second analogue stick now being used to move the character's view in the third person shooter.
PSP games are run via a software emulator within the NGP, and the upscaling can be toggled on and off by the player.
The PSP backwards compatibility seems to mirror the efforts of the PSP Remaster Series, which allow optimized versions of PSP games to run on the PS3.
http://www.next-gen.biz/features/shuhei-yoshida-ngpquote:What lessons were learned from the PSP? What didn’t PSP achieve that NGP can?
Throughout the development process of NGP, obviously we looked at what worked with PSP and what didn’t. We were almost too happy with PSP’s core capabilities; CPU, GPU and the 4-inch display. At that time it was the largest display you could find on a portable [gaming] device, with very beautiful graphics capabilities. We were too happy having PS2 quality-games on the Go, and we didn’t go much further. We had Wi-Fi capabilities with PSP which was very fast, and some experiences like Monster Hunter were created using Wi-Fi, but other than that it was very hard for developers to create a unique experience on PSP that you couldn’t get on a console like PS2.
After PS3 came out, people got used to looking at PS3-quality graphics. So just having nice graphics is not enough; people prefer playing on a large screen at home. That was the biggest lesson we learned in designing NGP – of course we advanced the CPU and GPU again, and developed the 5-inch OLED, but I’m sure in a couple of years people will get used to seeing it, so if we stop there we’ll make the same mistake we did on PSP. So what we made sure was to bring enough new hooks on NGP so that we can continue to create unique gaming experiences that you cannot get on consoless. Touch capability on both front and back, AR, sensors, social connectivity: these features will challenge NGP developers’ ability to create longer than PSP [did].

TOKYO (AP) - Sony's next-generation portable game machine, the PlayStation Vita, won't be going on sale in the U.S. or Europe in time for Christmas — a key sales time for game-console makers.
Expectations had been high the machine would be ready worldwide for the year-end holiday shopping season. Sony earlier promised a "phased global rollout" starting late this year. Sony Corp. Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said Thursday the PlayStation Vita will go on sale by the end of the year in Japan, and early next year in the U.S. and Europe.
Hirai did not characterize the timing as a delay, but said Sony wants to be prepared with solid game software offerings timed with the hardware launches. He did not give specific dates, meaning that it was still unclear whether the gadget — a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld that outdoes Sony's PlayStation Portable — would be ready for Christmas even in Japan.
He was far more clear in flatly denying that any price cut for the PlayStation Vita was in the works, brushing off a decision by rival Nintendo Co. last week to slash the price of its 3DS, less than a half year after it went on sale — stunningly quick in the industry.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai told reporters at Sony's Tokyo headquarters. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."
The PlayStation Vita will cost $249 in the U.S., and 24,980 yen in Japan for its Wi-Fi-only version, and $299 in the U.S., and 29,980 yen in Japan for the version that will also have a cell phone service. Under its latest price cut, the 3DS will cost 15,000 yen in Japan starting Aug. 11, down from 25,000 yen. In the U.S., the price drops to $169.99 from $249.99 on Aug. 12.
Although game fans may be disappointed by the Vita's slow arrival, delays are rather common in the gaming industry.
Sony delayed the introduction of the PlayStation 3 home console a couple of times. Nintendo also delayed the launch of the 3DS, which meant it wasn't ready for Christmas.

quote:PlayStation Vita Devkits Cost Far Less Than PSP And PlayStation 3 Kits
PlayStation Vita development kits, required by developers to create games for the device, will be significantly cheaper than devkits for Sony’s other game devices.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s George Bain recently announced at GDC Europe that in Europe, Vita devkits go for as little as 1,900 Euros (plus VAT).
Prototype Vita Devkits may be free, Bain added, stating that PubFund, a Sony Computer Entertainment America initiative, offers studios budget for the development of exclusive games. PubFund is currently seeing up to 15 pitches a week.
Develop-Online report just how low Vita development kits are priced, in comparison to devkits for the PlayStation 2, PSP and PlayStation 3. PS2 and PS3 devkits cost ¤20,000, while PSP ones cost ¤15,000.
Vita will also eventually see non-gaming applications, Bain confirmed at GDC Europe. For instance, the device is already confirmed to support popular social networks. However, for now, Sony are only accepting game proposals.

I don't have any way of verifying if the image is legit or not, so you should probably consider this a rumor for now.
