Marcus Berg has been confirmed as the top scorer in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, with the 22-year-old receiving the adidas Golden Boot award after the final between England and Germany.

Unparalleled efficiency
The Sweden striker scored seven times at the finals, making him the most prolific scorer at a U21 final tournament this century – three more than his closest rivals. "It is a great honour to receive the adidas Golden Boot award," said the FC Groningen striker. "At the end of the day, football is about winning, and winning is about scoring more goals than the other team. However, every single goal requires a team effort and therefore I would like to share this award with my team-mates and thank them for their support."

'Great show'
Berg scored a hat-trick in his side's opening game against Belarus and then two goals in both the group stage game against Serbia and the semi-final defeat by England. Klaus Filbry, vice-president and head of global marketing at adidas, said: "The 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship has been a successful event from many aspects, above all we have seen fantastic players score amazing goals. We congratulate Marcus and thank him for a great show."

Harry Redknapp has joined the chase for Sweden strike sensation Marcus Berg - but will have to bid up to £10million.

The youngster collected the golden boot at the European U21 championship yesterday after netting seven in four games.

David Moyes hopes of getting Berg for a bargain £5m have been thwarted with Dutch club Groningen hiking the price after big interest from around Europe.

Ajax boss Martin Jol has denied he is ready to make a £10m bid, leaving the way open for Spurs and Everton to seal a deal.

Spurs are demanding £18m from Sunderland for Marcus Bent, but chairman Niall Quinn is not meeting their valuation.
