Lotus to reveal drivers on Monday

The new Lotus Formula 1 team is to announce the identity of its 2010 drivers on Monday.

Team boss Tony Fernandes revealed via his Twitter feed that both cockpits had now been filled and that the announcement was imminent.

"Bringing home two drivers for the Lotus F1 team. Announcement Monday," Fernandes wrote.

AUTOSPORT understands that ex-Toyota driver Jarno Trulli is near certain for one Lotus seat. The Italian veteran has long been linked with the project having worked with Lotus technical boss Mike Gascoyne at Jordan, Renault and Toyota.

The second Lotus drive is believed to have come down to a choice between Heikki Kovalainen and Takuma Sato.

Former McLaren driver Kovalainen is on the market after losing his seat to world champion Jenson Button, while Sato has been working to break back into F1 in recent months having been on the sidelines since Super Aguri folded in early 2008. Sato tested for Toro Rosso last winter, but the team eventually chose to retain Sebastien Bourdais instead.

Malaysian Formula Renault 3.5 frontrunner Fairuz Fauzy could get a test and reserve role with Lotus, but early speculation that he would race for the team has been played down by Fernandes and Gascoyne.

"Ik vind het geweldig dat we Jarno, Heikki en Fairuz hebben weten te contracteren in ons debuutseizoen als Lotus F1 Racing. Het toont de kwaliteit en ambitie van het team aan. Jarno en Heikki zijn bewezen winnaars en zullen ons erg helpen bij het ontwikkelen van de auto in 2010", vertelde teambaas Fernandes. "Fairuz is zonder twijfel de beste coureur die Maleisië momenteel heeft en ik ben dan ook erg blij dat we hem kunnen verwelkomen."

"We hebben pas in september ons startbewijs voor 2010 gekregen, maar hebben nu al een auto in ontwikkeling en twee Formule 1-winnaars onder contract, evenals een geboren Maleisiër. Dat is geen slecht resultaat na drie maanden hard werken!", vervolgde hij. "We zijn nog niet klaar en we zullen na wat rust tijdens de feestdagen nog meer grenzen proberen te verleggen."

Stuttgart/Brackley - The MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team can confirm today that seven-times Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher will make his racing return in 2010 with the Silver Arrows team.

With seven Drivers’ World Championships, 248 Grand Prix starts, 91 victories, 154 podium finishes and 68 pole positions, the 40-year old German needs no introduction following an illustrious and record-breaking Formula One career from 1991 to 2006 at the Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari teams.

Michael’s return to racing with MERCEDES GP PETRONAS sees his return to Mercedes-Benz Motorsport where he began his racing apprenticeship as part of the Junior Programme in 1990, racing in Group C sports cars and DTM, and sees Michael renew his partnership with Ross Brawn with whom he won all seven of his World Championships.

Today’s announcement confirms the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS driver line-up for the 2010 season with Michael partnering his compatriot, 24 year old Nico Rosberg, in the Silver Arrows cars.

Michael Schumacher: "MERCEDES GP PETRONAS represents a new challenge for me both in a sporting and a personal context. It is a new chapter in my racing career and I am really looking forward to working with my old friend Ross Brawn and my companions from my days with the Mercedes Junior Programme. Mercedes-Benz helped him to this point and the rest is history: seven World Championship titles, more than any racing driver, 91 Grand Prix wins, more than any racing driver. There has been much speculation regarding the identity of the Japanese driver's teammate, with Christian Klein, Pedro de la Rosa, Nick Heidfeld and Bertrand Baguette all linked with the position. However, it appears that de la Rosa has beaten the rest to the punch.

According to Swiss newspaper, Blick, which has close ties to the Swiss-based outfit, the news will be announced soon, baring "an earthquake in Hinwil".

De la Rosa, who as previously turned out for Arrorws and Jaguar, has held the position of McLaren test driver since 2003, a period that included a brief run in the race seat following Juan Pablo Montoya's departure from the team midway through the 2006 season.

Speaking to NZZ am Sonntag regarding his team's second driver, Peter Sauber revealed that "an experienced man" with "new knowledge for the team" had been signed to partner Kobayashi, but ruled Nick Heidfeld out of the running.

Sauber admitted that he had not yet decided when he would look to officially drop the BMW name from his operation, as it was not a priority at the moment.

"[It's] currently called BMW Sauber F1 Team, because we registered ourselves as such with the FIA, and that's how we will line up. It is not decided at present when we will submit an application for a change of the name," he explained.

Far from securing the vacant Toro Rosso seat, Mirko Bortolotti has in fact been ousted from Red Bull's driver development programme.

With Jaime Alguersuari not yet confirmed as Sebastien Buemi's 2010 teammate, it was rumoured last week that Italian teenager Bortolotti was high on the list of potential alternatives.

He tested with the Faenza based team at the recent young driver session at Jerez, and made headlines last winter when he broke the Fiorano lap record while testing with Ferrari.

He finished the 2009 F2 championship in fourth place.

But although part of Red Bull's Junior Team last year, Bortolotti is not yet listed in the energy drink company's development scheme for 2010, while others including Brendon Hartley and Daniel Ricciardo are.

Reporting from Ferrari's Madonna di Campiglio media event, Turun Sanomat correspondent Heikki Kulta said Bortolotti has been "suddenly ousted" by Red Bull's Helmut Marko.

Bortolotti is consequently trying to find another F2 seat for 2010, but may instead have to return to university.

Red Bull said last month that "only those drivers who have the necessary talent for a sustainable Formula One
career will be supported" by the Junior Team scheme.

Citing Brazilian sources, that information was reported by Italy's Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport publications, in the wake of claims that the new Spanish team is struggling to compile a full budget for its Formula One debut.

It would explain why Toro Rosso has left open the race cockpit alongside Sebastien Buemi that late last season was occupied by the Spanish youngster Jaime Alguersuari.

26-year-old Senna was signed by Campos in the hope that his famous surname would attract more sponsorships on top of his Telmex backing, but it emerged this week that it has not been so.

The Brazilian sources said Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso already has the "right" to sign Senna in the event of difficulties at Campos.

Verder lees ik dat Carroll en Soucek kans maken bij Campos. Soucek schijnt genoeg financiën te hebben en Carroll zou de voorkeur hebben van de mogelijke nieuwe investeerder Teixera.

De Spaanse sportkrant AS meldt donderdag dat Adrian Campos het Formule 1-team Campos Meta 1 heeft verlaten. Formule 1-baas Bernie Ecclestone en teampresident Jose Ramon Carabante van Campos Meta 1 nemen het team over, waarna ze in 2011 de renstal verkopen aan Volkswagen.
Betaling
Door de overname lijkt Campos Meta 1 verzekerd van deelname aan de eerste race van het seizoen in Bahrein. De betalingsachterstand van zes miljoen euro bij chassisbouwer Dallara is voldaan.

Team
Colin Kolles wordt teambaas. De Duitse Roemeen stond eerder aan het hoofd van Midland F1, Spyker en Force India. Het contract van Bruno Senna wordt gerespecteerd. Het team, dat mogelijk nog van naam zal veranderen, moet nu nog op zoek naar een tweede coureur.

Geld
Campos Meta 1 werd geplaagd door financiële problemen. Een deal met A1GP-baas Tony Teixeira ketste af, waarna Ecclestone en Carabante de team redden van de ondergang.

According to Germany's Bild, Webber 'allegedly... wants to withdraw after the 2010 season', leaving a race-seat open at Red Bull.

And the man they are tipping to take Webber's place is Raikkonen.

The Finn quit Formula One in favour of the World Rally Championship after failing to land a drive with McLaren for the 2010 season.

However, Raikkonen has made it clear that his foray into rallying doesn't mean he's done with F1 forever.

In fact, Bild claims he will be back as early as next year, stepping up to take Webber's vacated Red Bull seat.
