While the move to cut James was anticipated, the release of cornerback Rod Hood and defensive end/linebacker Travis LaBoy was not.

The moves clear salary-cap space for the Cardinals, who want to sign new deals with linebacker Karlos Dansby, safety Adrian Wilson and, eventually, unhappy wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

James, Hood and LaBoy were scheduled to make $10 million combined next season, but because of the $7.5 million signing bonus given to LaBoy a year ago, the Cardinals' cap savings will be several million dollars less than what the three would have earned. Still, it gives spending room to a franchise that had been just below the salary ceiling.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and quarterback Brett Favre plan to meet at an undisclosed location later this week to discuss the possibility of the former Packers and Jets quarterback renouncing his retirement from the NFL to play the 2009 season with the Vikings, according to a source with direct knowledge of discussions between the two parties.

There is a mutual understanding that sometime soon thereafter Favre will decide whether to sign with the Vikings. The team would expect him to participate fully in offseason minicamps and training camps, which he missed last year with the Jets.

James, who has 12,121 career rushing yards, was cut by the Arizona Cardinals last week. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said James plans to continue playing and that teams were interested in the 10-year NFL veteran.

James was demoted for nine games last season before being re-inserted as the starter for the playoffs, where he played well as the Cardinals made a run to the Super Bowl. James, who had a career-low 10 carries per game and 514 yards in 2008, requested to be released or traded by the Cardinals at various points of last season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After seeing fans jam London's Wembley Stadium to watch the NFL the past two years, the league is considering adding a second regular-season game overseas in time for the 2010 season.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the second game could also be played in London or another location in the United Kingdom. The issue will be discussed at next week's league meetings and could be included in a larger plan to add up to two regular-season games to the NFL schedule.

"The fan reaction we've had in London has been extraordinary. We would like to feed that passion," Goodell said after speaking at the Charlotte Touchdown Club. "We have a great fan base in the UK. There have been discussions of taking the second game and playing it in another market in the UK. That's something that we'll evaluate."

The NFL first staged a regular-season game in London in 2007, when the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10. Last year, the New Orleans Saints beat the San Diego Chargers 37-32.

Both games were sellouts, and fans quickly gobbled up tickets for this season's game between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 25.

While Goodell reiterated there are no plans to move the Super Bowl to London, he said a second regular-season game is drawing support from league owners.

"I think the teams have had a great experience that have gone over," Goodell said. "We've been able to build on that and I think teams recognize it's an honor and a privilege to go over and play there. And it can be done without impacting the team negatively."

However, some players have been critical of the overseas game because of the extensive travel involved in the middle of the season. One team also loses a home game in the arrangement, a potential competitive disadvantage.

Saints coach Sean Payton was critical of the "sloppy" field conditions at Wembley Stadium last season and the logistics involved in playing a "home" game in London.

The league did give the Saints and Chargers byes the week after the game. The Patriots and Buccaneers will also have a week off after this year's London game, which counts as a home game for Tampa Bay.

NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith could not immediately be reached for comment on the prospects of a second game overseas.

"The negative is taking the home game away from the fans," Goodell said. "It's another reason why potentially restructuring the season and changing two preseason into regular-season can be something that we find is beneficial to the fans."

Goodell spent about an hour before Tuesday's luncheon visiting with Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, who is recovering from a heart transplant he received on Super Bowl Sunday. Goodell said "the Big Cat will be roaring pretty quick" and indicated they discussed issues on the agenda for the league meetings, which Richardson will not attend.

Goodell said he won't make a recommendation on adding an extra game or two to the schedule at the expense of preseason games and doesn't expect owners to vote on the issue next week.

The collective bargaining agreement will also be discussed, and Goodell said he expects talks with Smith will heat up in early June. The current deal expires after the 2010 season.

Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich, the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year, revealed Thursday that he is battling cancer.

Herzlich, a senior, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a cancer most often found in bone or soft tissue.

"Obviously, I was shocked. I had been extremely focused on preparing for my senior season at Boston College and for life beyond that. Now, I must channel all that energy into facing my toughest opponent yet, and that is exactly what I will do," Herzlich said in a statement released by the school.

Herzlich has returned to his native Pennsylvania to be near his family and undergo tests to determine a course of treatment.

Herzlich was a finalist for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker, last season. He led the Eagles with 110 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

"When people think of Mark Herzlich, they think of a fearless individual who is always ready to take on a tough opponent. His integrity, determination and focus are unmatched. I know he will face this challenge with that same attitude," Boston College coach Frank Spaziani said.

Herzlich said he was unsure what his illness meant for his football future.

The cap was due to increase $7 million to $123 million this season, but additional adjustments stipulated in the current CBA will increase the total amount that teams can spend on player compensation to about $128 million. The $12 million increase is the largest in three years.

The league informed teams Wednesday that a "cash-adjustment mechanism" from final accounting figures in May will give clubs $947,000 of additional salary cap room, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Friday.

About $4 million in cap room had already been added earlier this year. The adjustments were triggered after spending on players fell below 59.5 percent of the league's total revenue in 2008.

The adjustments, first reported by FoxSports.com, do not affect the minimum team salary of $107,748,000.

In that landmark game, the Irish utilized the forward pass to great success to beat the Black Knights, popularizing what had been, up to that point, a little-used strategy. The results influenced other teams to adopt the forward pass, in effect changing the game.

If there's football at the new stadium before 2013, Notre Dame would still like to be involved, Swarbrick said. But playing the 100th anniversary of the 1913 game in New York would have great meaning for the Irish, he added, according to the report.

"It would be of great historical significance for us if it would be Army," Swarbrick said, according to the report. "We would love that. Some of the most significant games in the history of college football involve those two schools and Yankee Stadium."

The Yankees and Army did not immediately return calls seeking comment, the Times reported.

Rosenbloom, the franchise's managing partner, would like to sell to St. Louis representatives, according to the Post Dispatch. But with a lack of interest from buyers in the area, Rosenbloom may have no choice but to sell to a buyer who will move the team out of St. Louis.

The Rams came to St. Louis from Los Angeles in 1995. Los Angeles, which is the second-largest television market int he country, has been without an NFL team since.

Vince Young's agent says the quarterback doesn't want the Tennessee Titans to trade him, downplaying comments that his client made to a Baltimore television station.

Major Adams said Tuesday night that Young intends to remain in Tennessee and battle Kerry Collins for the No. 1 quarterback position. Adams' reaction was first reported in The City Paper in Nashville.

"Vince's desire has always been to compete for the starting quarterback job in Tennessee," Adams said. "Even before they drafted him, they asked him if he thought he could compete for the starting role, and he said yes. He has always been a starter, and that is his mind-set."
In an interview with 104.5 The Zone in Nashville on Wednesday, Titans coach Jeff Fisher said he wasn't surprised to hear that Young wants to be the starter. In fact, Fisher expects that to eventually happen.

"I would expect everyone on our football team to want to start," Fisher said. "I think he (Young) may have been lead on a little bit in the interview, but I didn't pay attention to it. He knows there is no potential for us to [trade] him.

"Kerry is our starter, but Vince is eventually going to be our starting quarterback and the quarterback we drafted him to be, period."

Young's comments to WMAR-TV on Saturday indicated a willingness to leave the Titans if he couldn't be the starter over Collins next season.

"Definitely I want to be in there playing ball and picking up where I left off, winning games and having a good time with my teammates and fans," Young told the station. "But at the same time, if them guys don't want me in there, it's time for me to make a career change for myself.

"They didn't want me to rent this spot because of the extra or added attention that I may bring," said Owens, who was informed of the news after a real-estate agent and his bodyguard viewed the property. Referring to his real-estate agent, Owens added, "In her words, she said, 'Drama.' I thought it was funny."

Perhaps, Owens added, the owners aren't Bills or T.O. fans.

The place in question is a six-bedroom home, located at 1 Deer Run in Orchard Park, that lists for $489,397. It's also available for rent and close to Ralph Wilson Stadium.

De finale van de Nederlandse American football competitie beleeft dit jaar een spectaculaire editie. Topspelers uit de Amerikaanse National Football League komen speciaal over naar Rotterdam om clinics te geven. De dag wordt afgetrapt door een speciale inwoner van de havenstad.

De hele dag door is er typisch Amerikaans entertainment. Cheerleaders van het hoogste niveau brengen het publiek en diverse speciale gasten in de stemming met een professionele show. De Nederlandse zanger/componist Jan David Batenburg treedt op met zijn nieuwe hitsingel “Misses Sunshine”. Batenburg schreef voor onder andere Guus Meeuwis en heeft nu een speciaal nummer geschreven ter gelegenheid van NY400.

De eindstrijd wordt een spektakel met onder meer een professionele Marching band, die publiek en spelers in de winning mood zal brengen. De wedstrijdbal wordt in het spel geworpen door een parachutist die het terrein van gastheer Rotterdam Trojans zal ‘binnen vallen’. In totaal worden er op de dag zo’n duizend bezoekers verwacht. In de Tulip Bowl neemt regerend kampioen Amsterdam Crusaders het op tegen de verrassing van het American football seizoen, Leiden Lightning. Lightning wist in de halve finale torenhoge favoriet Maastricht Wildcats met 10-7 te verslaan.

Clinics
Vanaf 10:00 uur vinden er speciale football-clinics en cheerleader-clinics voor de jeugd plaats. Speciaal hiervoor zijn gerenommeerde gasten aangetrokken. De football-lessen worden verzorgd door NFL quarterback Gibran Hamdan en wide receiver Skyler Fulton. De danslessen worden aangeboden door topdanseressen van de voormalige Admirals Cheerleaders. Jubileum
De NY400 Tulip Bowl behelst ook het 25-jarige jubileum van de Nederlandse American football finale. Een moment dat prachtig samenvalt met NY400. Als meest populaire sport in Amerika kan American football natuurlijk niet ontbreken in de NY400 festiviteiten.

NY400

The gunman, identified by authorities as 24-year-old Mark Becker, is a former student who played football for Thomas.

Thomas was shot multiple times just before 8 a.m. local time, authorities said. About 50 students were in the school, including several in the weight room, at the time. School was not in session, and no one else was injured in the attack.

Thomas, the 2005 NFL High School Football Coach of the Year, was airlifted to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, where he died, his family said in a statement. He was 58.

Police say Becker was supposed to have been taken to a hospital psychiatric ward after leading police on a car chase last weekend.

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson says he was told Butler County Sheriff's deputies would take Becker to the ward after he took a baseball bat to a Cedar Falls home and led police on a chase Saturday night.

The Sheriff's Office declined to comment on whether deputies took Becker to the ward.

Olson says Becker was released from custody at some point but that his department wasn't notified.

According to online court records, Becker had been arrested Saturday by Parkersburg police on a felony charge of eluding and additional charges of speeding, reckless driving and failure to obey a stop sign. Becker was charged Monday with eluding police pursuit.

Becker was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with first-degree murder, authorities said. He is being held in Butler County Jail on $1 million bond with a preliminary hearing set for July 2.

The district's superintendent and a guidance counselor were meeting with students who were in the weight room at the time of the shooting.

"No kids were hurt, we're thankful for that," superintendent Jon Thompson told KOEL radio. "They did witness this and so we have counselors at the site to talk with the kids."

The school is in Parkersburg, about 80 miles northeast of Des Moines.

Court records also show that Becker pleaded guilty in Black Hawk County last winter to charges of assault causing injury, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. On the assault charge, Becker served a four-day jail term with the remaining 86 days suspended, the Des Moines Register reported.

Aplington-Parkersburg is the alma mater of four current NFL players -- Casey Wiegmann of the Denver Broncos; Jared DeVries of the Detroit Lions; Brad Meester of the Jacksonville Jaguars; and Aaron Kampman of the Green Bay Packers. All played for Thomas.

Northcutt was informed during the week he was going to be traded. The Lions showed interest but didn't want to give up a draft choice. Once they talked to the Jaguars, the Lions decided to offer Alexander in a straight player-for-player deal.

The trade was agreed to on Friday and is expected to be finalized next week. The irony of the trade is that Northcutt and Alexander are represented by the same agent, Jerome Stanley, who was surprised to find out Alexander was involved in the trade.

Northcutt was the most productive remaining wide receiver on the Jaguars. Northcutt caught 44 passes for 545 yards last season in Jacksonville. Also gone from the Jaguars receiving corps are Matt Jones and Reggie Williams.

The 31-year-old Northcutt will be joining his third team. He has been with the Browns and Jaguars.

Alexander, 24, is entering his third season. He started 16 games in 2007 but only started one game last season.

Another Twitter imposter

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess is seeking to press charges against someone who was impersonating him on a Twitter site. Bess says that the Twitter feeds that were made in his name by “LamboWeezy” have no connection to him, and Bess’ agent, Kenny Zuckerman, has alerted the authorities to the incident.

In an email, Zuckerman writes that this Twitter site is 100 percent fake, and Bess plans to “prosecute this imposter to the fullest extent of the law. Fraud is fraud, and we are going to protect Davone and his reputation at any cost.”

Fans on a Dolphins message board began to doubt the validity of the statements made on the Twitter site, where the impersonator was also answering fan questions, according to Zuckerman. A representative of a Dolphins blog called “The Phinsider” brought the Twitter site to Zuckerman’s attention.

Bess is a second-year player out of Hawaii who caught one touchdown in 16 games in 2008.

Several cases like this have made the news lately, with St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa recently reaching a settlement after suing Twitter over a fake account made in his name, according to the Associated Press.
