"I took one for the cause," he said. "I can't give a lot of financial support for the (McCain/Palin) campaign. I do have a sign up in my yard, but I can do very little."

John McCain rolled out his economic rescue plan Tuesday, aimed at encouraging investment and providing relief to seniors and the unemployed -- his latest bid to inspire confidence among voters that he is the candidate who can stabilize the turbulent economy.

He also sounded new alarms about the risks he says Americans will be taking if they elect Barack Obama, whom McCain has portrayed as untested and untruthful in a time of national crisis.

"Perhaps never before in history have the American people been asked to risk so much based on so little," McCain said at a rally in Blue Bell, Pa., where he announced his plan. He warned Obama could turn a "recession" into a "depression."

The Republican presidential nominee's $52.5 billion plan would eliminate taxes on unemployment benefits -- a measure that could affect 3.6 million Americans who receive such benefits, according to the campaign. McCain calls for lifting the tax in 2008 and 2009. Obama, who unveiled his economic plan on Monday, has also called for a temporary suspension of the tax on unemployment benefits, as well as an extension of such benefits for an additional 13 weeks.

If the government eliminated taxes on unemployment benefits, recipients would see an increase in benefits on average of nearly 10 percent, the McCain campaign said.

"It's unclear to me why the government taxes money it just sent you," McCain said. "We should relieve this burden from Americans who have been hit the hardest."

McCain on Tuesday also proposed reducing the tax rate on retirement accounts to 10 percent on the first $50,000 withdrawn. The campaign estimated it would affect 9 million people over the age of 60.

"Retirees have suffered enough and need relief, and the surest relief is to let them keep more of their own savings," McCain said.

His plan would also cut the capital gains tax in half, to 7.5 percent, for the next two years. McCain also promised that as president he would order the Treasury Department to guarantee 100 percent of all savings for six months.

McCain rolled out his plan just one day before he and Obama meet in their final presidential debate. He had previously proposed using $300 billion in federal economic rescue money to buy up and renegotiate cumbersome mortgages directly from homeowners.

But Obama's campaign swiftly rebuked McCain for not proposing enough measures for the middle class Tuesday.

"John McCain's latest gambit is a day late and 101 million middle-class families short," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Senator McCain also shows how little he understands the economy by offering lower capital gains rates in a year in which people don't have an awful lot of capital gains.

"His trickle-down, ideological recipes won't strengthen our economy and grow our middle-class, but Barack Obama's pro-jobs, pro-family economic policies will," he said.

Obama's economic plan, announced Monday, called for suspending the tax on unemployment benefits as well as extending benefits. The Democrat also proposed allowing people to withdraw up to $10,000 from their retirement accounts without any penalty this year and next, a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures at some banks, and a two-year tax break for businesses that create new jobs.

McCain's proposal comes as Republican campaign veterans say he needs to do more than just criticize Obama in an economic environment that favors Democrats. Recent polling shows Obama with an edge on which candidate can do a better job handling the economy.

According to most polls, Obama leads in enough states to win the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory, while McCain is being forced to campaign hard in traditionally Republican states.

That's partly because of Obama's well-funded onslaught of TV ads and extensive network of field troops registering and canvassing voters; McCain trails on both fronts.

Page 8, Finding Number One of the report says: "I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."

In plain English, she did something "unlawful." She broke the state ethics law.

Perhaps Gov. Palin has been too busy to actually read the Troopergate report. Perhaps she is relying on briefings from McCain campaign spinmeisters.
That's the charitable interpretation.

Because if she had actually read it, she couldn't claim "vindication" with a straight face.

Cruciale week voor John Mc Cain en Sarah Palin


De Republikeinse presidentskandidaat John McCain staat voor één van de meest cruciale weken in zijn presidentscampagne. Volgens analisten is het zijn laatste kans om Obama uit het Witte Huis te houden. Mc Cain blijft in zijn kansen geloven: "Het zijn de kiezers die de nieuwe president kiezen. Niet de media."

Volgens de laatste peilingen ligt Mc Cain 8 tot 10 procent achter op Democraat Barack Obama. En dat terwijl diezelfde peilingen een maand geleden een lichte voorsprong voor Mc Cain aangaven, toen running mate Sarah Palin alle aandacht opeiste. Maar nu de storm rond Palin is gaan liggen, ligt Obama weer duidelijk voor in de peilingen.

Dossierkennis

Wat heeft Mc Cain en Palin dan genekt? Uit enkele interviews bleek dat Palins dossierkennis over belangrijke zaken ontoereikend is. Zo wist ze bijvoorbeeld niet wat het bankenplan van 700 miljard dollar van minister van Financiën Paulson precies inhoudt. En ook een passend antwoord op de wereldwijde financiële crisis hadden noch Mc Cain noch Palin klaar. Obama ook niet, maar diens adviseurs en experts zijn duidelijk veel beter dan die van de Republikeinen.

Debat

Woensdag kan McCain wat schade goedmaken in het derde en laatste debat met Obama. In de vorige debatten ging het gelijk of of won Obama op punten.

Timmons, Vincent, and Park stood to share at least $45 million if the business deal went through.

Timmons' activities occurred in the years following the first Gulf War, when Washington considered Iraq to be a rogue enemy state and a sponsor of terrorism. His dealings on behalf of the deceased Iraqi leader stand in stark contrast to the views his current employer held at the time.

John McCain strongly supported the 1991 military action against Iraq, and as recently as Sunday described Saddam Hussein as a one-time menace to the region who had "stated categorically that he would acquire weapons of mass destruction, and he would use them wherever he could."
