(CNN) -- Sen. Joe Biden on Wednesday blasted Sen. John McCain for first being against financial regulation and now suddenly talking about the "greed of Wall Street."


Sen. Joe Biden questions why Sen. John McCain is criticizing Wall Street after pushing deregulation.

1 of 3 "All of a sudden it's, 'My goodness, there's greed on Wall Street. My goodness, we need common sense regulation. My goodness,' " Biden said in Maumee, Ohio.

"So let's take a look at John's conversion here," Biden added later. "Something happened on the road to Damascus; John fell off his horse, but he got back up on the same horse."

The Democratic vice presidential candidate went on to draw parallels between McCain's stance on the economy and his health care plan, saying that with the latter the GOP candidate favors deregulation that wouldn't allow states to protect residents from insurance companies.

"So John, you got back on the same horse, you continue to push a plan that's designed to deregulate the health insurance industry," said Biden, asking people in the crowd to raise their hands if they trust insurance companies to take care of their needs.

"I got one person [who] raised their hand. I got also a bridge I got to sell you and guess what? It's in Alaska, and it goes to nowhere."

The senator from Delaware told supporters they have a choice between those who allow corporations and the wealthy to go "unfettered" and those who want "common sense rules" to protect transparency.

The McCain campaign was quick to respond to what it called "Biden's economic distortions."

"If Barack Obama's running mate wants to criticize distortions and misrepresentation, he should aim his accusations at Obama's tax talk versus his tax record," said Ben Porritt, a McCain-Palin spokesman. "Ohio voters prefer John McCain's maverick record of reforming government and fighting for change."

Biden on Tuesday said that an Obama-Biden administration would "increase regulatory oversight of the very people John [McCain] has refused to regulate."

Until recently, McCain consistently described himself as an opponent of most government regulation. In 1995, he proposed an across-the-board moratorium on all federal regulations but that measure failed in Congress.

In a March interview with The Wall Street Journal, he said, "I'm always for less regulation. But I am aware of the view that there is a need for government oversight."

"As far as a need for additional regulations are concerned, I think that depends on the legislative agenda and what the Congress does to some degree, but I am fundamentally a deregulator," he said.

As his campaign has developed and the situation on Wall Street has worsened, McCain gradually has added increasing regulation of the financial sector to his reform themes but has provided few specifics.

Both Obama and McCain went on the airwaves Wednesday with new economic messages

For six days, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has studiously avoided all off-the-cuff comments with reporters following her through Alaska and battleground states in the Lower 48.

But at Karl’s Restaurant and Bar in Cleveland this morning, Scott Conroy of CBS finally caught up with her.

According to Conroy, 10 diners were having breakfast and coffee at Karl’s when the Alaska governor and John McCain’s running mate came in, trailed by her husband, Todd. Shaking hands all around, she introduced herself as Sarah. Conroy, in a report to news media in her entourage, wrote that she said, “Hi, how are you guys? Nice to see you,” and “Excuse us for interrupting your meal.”

Conroy saw his chance, and asked the governor for her reaction to the AIG bailout. She said she was “disappointed that taxpayers are called upon to bail out another one. Certainly AIG though, with the construction bonds that they’re holding and with the insurance that they are holding very, very impactful to Americans so you know the shot that has been called by the feds its understandable but very very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one.”

Conroy, apparently feeling neglected like the rest of the press corps on her plane, then asked, “Governor are you going to chat with us back in the plane? We’re getting lonely back there.”

Palin responded, “Are you getting lonely? Gee, yeah, come on up then!”

Reporters are eager to take her up on that one, not least because they hear there is hot food for those at the front of the plane.

Ik ben echt heel benieuwd naar de debatten. Zowel Obama als Biden zijn in mijn optiek verbaal veel sterker dan McCain en Palin, maar Bush vond ik ook hilarisch zwak in de debatten en dat heeft hem ook niet echt schade toegebracht.

Verschil is dat Bush gewoon een geslepen politieke vos is, maar ik denk niet dat Palin en McCain dat zijn.

En Kerry vind ik vele malen zwakker dan Biden en Obama.
