La Stampa wees bondscoach Roberto Donadoni aan als hoofdschuldige. 'Il flop di Normal One', kopte de krant. 'Te veel discutabele keuzes. Donadoni verliest het van Van Basten en lijkt meer op Trapattoni dan Lippi. Gewoon zijn is nu even niet meer genoeg. Donadoni moet iets verzinnen, een list, een hinderlaag. Maar hij moet vooral met frisse ideeën komen.'

Van Basten toverde wél goede ingrepen en een geslaagde tactiek uit de hoge hoed. 'Van Basten, die niet klein te krijgen is, maakte sprongen voor de dug out en droeg zijn ploeg op met duivels voetbal te winnen via de counter.'

It was at least good to see him stay on his feet because we have seen too many players diving and rolling around in make believe agony already.

He deserved his goal and it lifted Holland, while defusing and rattling the world champions.

The Dutch started to play like we know they can and after 31 minutes scored a goal that Cruyff, Neeskens, Gullit and their own manager Marco van Basten would have been proud of.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst started it by clearing off his own line before he then accelerated down the left to accept a cross-field pass from Rafael van der Vaart.

A huge deep pass found Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, who headed it back into the path of Sneijder and he volleyed it wide of the stranded Buffon.

It was a classic counterattack and a brilliantlyexecuted goal. The Real Madrid strike-partnership of Van Nistelrooy and Sneijder, who was celebrating his 24th birthday, looks the most potent of the finals so far.

The former Manchester United star could have gone down and earned Holland a penalty after being tripped by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Van Nistelrooy stumbled, but didn’t fall and was quickly ambushed by five Italian defenders in the 20th minute.

However, six minutes later he scored the first goal of the best match so far of Euro 2008 to trigger a superb and explosive ‘Group of Death’ clash in Berne.

Van Nistelrooy was on hand to turn the ball into the net after it was driven back into the six-yard box by Wesley Sneijder.

He looked offside and TV replays proved he was, but Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt took the judgement of his assistant and allowed the goal to stand.

When the replay was screened on the giant screens, the Italian fans and their bench went berserk and Luca Toni was booked for dissent.

It will be argued that Italy’s Christian Panucci, in trying to clear the ball, was still active, despite ending up behind the goal.

Italie miste zijn captain, de back Fabio Cannavaro, die zich blesseerde in de trainingen in de voorbereiding en niet meer deel kon nemen aan het toernooi. Het Nederlandse team, op zijn beurt, had ook een belangrijke tegenvaller: de aanvaller Ryan Babel, ook afgevallen, vanwege een kneuzing.

De Wedstrijd

Italie begon gevaarlijker. Na drie minuten miste Luca Toni rakelings een voorzet. In de 11e minuut kopte diezelfde Luca Toni de bal naast de goal. Holland reageerde met Van Nistelrooy in de 16 meter. De aanvaller dribbelde voorbij doelman Buffon, maar verloor zijn evenwicht en de hoek om te schieten.

Na nog enkele kansen gecreeerd te hebben, opende Holland de score in de 25e minuut. Buffon sloeg de bal weg na een vrije trap. De Nederlandse aanval schoot van buiten de 16 in de rebound, en Van Nistelrooy, in discutabele positie, schoot de bal binnen.

De Hollanders volgden 6 minuten daarna met een dodelijke counter. De bal werd gelanceerd van linksachter naar rechtsvoor. Kuyt kopte de 16 in, en Sneijder scoorde de goal

Nog voor de rust kwam Van Nistelrooy oog in oog met Buffon, maar die redde met z'n voeten op het sterke schot van de aanvaller.

In de slotfase kwam Zambrotta goed op vanaf links, maar schoot zonder richting en de bal ging naast. Grosso kwam in de plaats van Materazzi en gaf meer kracht aan het middenveld van Italie. Even daarna verving Del Piero Di Natale.

De eerste poging van de ervaren speler was een geplaatst schot bij het binnenkomen van de 16 langs de defensie van Van der Sar. De druk van de Italianen werd opgevoerd. Na 69 minuten was er een nieuwe poging van Del Piero, de bal ging vlak langs het doel. Luca Toni kreeg een uitstekende kans om wat terug te doen in de 75e minuut, maar schoot over Van der Sar, terwijl hij alleen stond tegenoever de Nederlandse keeper.

Na nog twee pogingen van Italie en twee mooie reddingen van Van der Sar gooide Holland de wedstrijd op slot met een goal van van Bronckhorst, na een counter in de 79e minuut. Kuyt pikte de bal op in de rebound van zijn eigen schot, gaf voor en de linksback scoorde. In de blessuretijd scoord Ambrosini nog bijna, maar de bal ging uit.

Ruud and Wesley in for the kill
MARCO VAN BASTEN’S rampant Dutchmen announced a new era of total football last night as they swept aside world champions Italy for the most comprehensive win of Euro 2008.
But the Italians saw their hopes take a dive as their opening night was wrecked by a goal that should never have been allowed.

Ruud van Nistelrooy claimed that crucial opener when standing a yard offside and the Italians were left reeling as birthday boy Wesley Sneijder and then former Arsenal star Giovanni van Bronckhorst took advantage.

We will never know if Swedish referee Peter Frojfeldt was distracted by the sight of Christian Panucci lying injured on the pitch but he allowed Van Nistelrooy’s goal to stand. And Italy’s fury simply could not be measured.

Roberto Donadoni’s men never recovered, and now face an uphill battle to rescue their tournament.

Holland went into this game having not beaten Italy since 1978. But in this so-called Group of Death they knew they could not afford the luxury of a slow start. Dutch coach Van Basten quits after this tournament to take over at Ajax, and he desperately wants to leave the same legacy he left as a player. With him as their frontman, Holland won this tournament in superb style in 1988.

Donadoni, Van Basten’s old Milan team-mate, was by contrast leading Italy into his first tournament. Holland scored only 15 goals in qualifying but were first out of the blocks, as Chelsea target Rafael van der Vaart tested Gianluigi Buffon.

But Luca Toni should have done better than head wide when unmarked. The Dutch, stroking the ball around, looked threatening, and they could have had a penalty when Van Nistelrooy rounded Buffon.
Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy stayed on his feet, however, and the Italians scrambled the ball clear.

In this tight, cramped ground, Italy seemed hemmed in and nervous while the Dutch were much more composed and fluent.

Holland almost led when Marco Materazzi was just a fraction away from glancing the ball into his own net.

Buffon weakly punched away a free-kick and Joris Mathijsen hooked the ball back in the 26th minute. Sneijder cracked in a low shot and Van Nistelrooy – a full four feet offside – turned the ball into the net.

Italy were almost level, though, as Van Bronckhorst hacked the ball off the line. But their world began to collapse as the Dutch broke clear, and Van Bronckhorst swung a superb ball over the defence to Dirk Kuyt.

Liverpool’s Kuyt nodded accurately down, and Italy’s famed marking was nowhere to be seen as Sneijder, on his 24th birthday, nipped in to hook the ball past a stranded Buffon.

The Italians’ campaign was in danger of being being kicked into Dutch before it had really began. They kept running into a Dutch defence immaculately modelled by Van Basten and who had let in only five goals in getting to these finals. Van Bronckhorst finished off a flowing move 10 minutes from time to leave the Italians crestfallen.

Nee, zo werkt het niet.

Zolang het spel doorgaat mag je doodvallen buiten de lijnen, je bent nog steeds betrokken bij het spel tot dat het spel stil komt te liggen.

Wist ik ook niet, maar is echt zo.
