Tijdens de ATP-Masters van Miami heeft Andy Roddick zich met enige pijn en moeite naar de derde ronde weten te worstelen. De Amerikaan had drie sets nodig om zich langs Viktor Troicki te knokken.

De eerste set was met 5-7 nog een prooi voor Troicki. Vanaf de tweede set kwam Roddick op stoom, door de volgende sets met 6-2 en 6-4 te winnen trok hij de match naar zich toe. Ivo Karlovic verloor zijn eerste ronde partij van Julien Bennateau met 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Het is voor de vijfde maal op rij dat Karlovic in de openingsronde in Miami onderuit gaat.

Andy Roddick doet dit jaar niet mee aan Roland Garros, het tweede Grand Slam-toernooi van het seizoen. De Amerikaanse nummer zes van de wereld heeft te veel last van een schouderblessure om in actie te komen op het Parijse gravel. Roland Garos begint volgende week en Roddick heeft zeker twaalf dagen rust nodig.

De US Open-winnaar van 2003 liep de blessure anderhalve week geleden op tijdens het Masters Series-toernooi van Rome. Hij gaf daar in de halve finales op en miste vervolgens ook het Masters Series-toernooi in Hamburg.

Andy Roddick had op het grastoernooi van Queens slechts een set nodig om Mardy Fish van zich af te schudden. De als vijftiende geplaatste Fish moest na een set (7-6) noodgedwongen opgeven vanwege een enkelblessure.

Beide spelers kregen verschillende breekkansen. Bij 2-2 wist Fish een breekkans niet te benutten en Roddick zag drie kansen op een break in rook opgaan door twee aces van zijn landgenoot. In de tiebreak nam Roddick snel een 2-0 voorsprong, waarna Fish niet meer terug kon knokken.

Door een val op het natte, gladde gras kreeg Fish last van de enkel. De kwetsuur was dusdanig ernstig, dat Fish besloot op te geven. Roddick bereikte op deze manier alsnog vrij eenvoudig de kwartfinale van het toernooi dat hij al vier keer op zijn naam wist te schrijven.

Rafael Nadal heeft in de halve finale op het Artois Championship Andy Roddick verslagen. De Spanjaard troefde de titelverdediger af met 7-5 en 6-4.rn


Beide spelers serveerden goed in de eerste set. Met het aanvallende spel van zowel Roddick als Nadal werden de servicegames snel binnengehaald. De winnaar van Roland Garros liet zien dat hij binnen een week kan veranderen van gravelspeler naar grasspeler, want Nadal zocht meerdere malen het net op.

In de elfde game verloor Roddick zijn service voor het eerst deze week. De Amerikaan kreeg direct daarna vier breakpoints, maar wist ze niet te benutten waardoor Nadal de eerste set naar zich toetrok.

In de tweede set brak de Spanjaard al vroeg de service van de Amerikaan. Roddick kon die break niet meer omkeren waardoor hij zijn titel morgen niet zal verdedigen. Op de vraag of Nadal nu favoriet is voor Wimbledon antwoordde de nummer twee van de wereld lachend: 'Laat ik me eerst op de finale van Queens richten, dan zien we wel verder.'

I woke up this morning and something in my neck and kind of any activity is causing it to flare up. I went out and tried to warm for about five minutes at about 5:00. I mean, we've been getting treatment all day. You asked what was leading up. Went to a chiropractor and we had Doug work on it. We've had kind of everyone take a crack at it today.

"Tried to hit at 5:00; didn't go so hot. Went out for some more treatment. Tried to take some painkillers and whatnot. You know, I thought I might be able to give it a go if it didn't get any worse. My second or third serve in warm up out there just got definitely worse, kind of just to the point where it's tough to move my head right now."

Roddick plans to return to action next week in Los Angeles followed by Washington, D.C. in leading up to the US Open. "I'd love to play those tournaments and actually get some matches in both weeks and actually feel like a tennis player again where you go to the courts and play a match and go home and get ready for the next day. That's a better routine to have. That's the one I like. I know L.A. is only a 28 draw, which means I could probably get a late start there, which will probably be a good thing."

Former world number one Andy Roddick admits he needs to get as many matches as possible under his belt over the next two weeks to lift his confidence ahead of the U.S. Open.

The American, who chose to skip the Olympic Games to prepare for the event where he won his only Grand Slam title in 2003, has played only one tournament since Wimbledon and missed last week's Masters Series event in Cincinnati due to a neck injury.

Roddick said he hoped to find form at this week's Los Angeles Classic, where he is the top seed, and next week at the ATP event in Washington.

"Not playing doesn't help," he told reporters at the Los Angeles Classic.

"I've always been a player who prepares for tournaments by playing matches and this time of year I've always done really well -- that's why this year and next week are important. They will give a proper read on how my form is going in there."

Roddick, who has slipped to ninth in the world rankings, beat both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal early in the year before a series of injuries checked his progress.

"It's been frustrating," he said. "I don't feel like I've got a foot forward in the last four months.

"Losing and not playing well for a stretch is a lot easier, because you feel responsible for it. To not be able to play is frustrating and something I haven't really had to deal with before.

"The ranking I am not too concerned about because it's not like I have been out there playing and not getting the results.

When I have been healthy, through April and even the start of the claycourt season, I was playing well."

Roddick said he stood by his decision not to travel across the world to China but admitted that he would have one eye on Beijing over the next fortnight.

"I am sure that when I am watching the events, I'll certainly miss it and there's going to be a part of me that wishes I was there," he said. "But as far as tennis goes, this is probably the best scenario.

"At this point in my career I am trying to focus on making runs at (Grand) Slams. I didn't feel like flying across the world and back and then starting a Grand Slam four days later was the ideal preparation."

Roddick begins his campaign in Los Angeles on Thursday against Serbian Dusan Vemic.

The U.S. Open runs from August 25 until September 7.

Roddick To Meet Del Potro In Los Angeles Final

Top seed Andy Roddick cruised into his third ATP final of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over unseeded German Denis Gremelmayr at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The 25-year-old American needed only 62 minutes to reach his first career final in Los Angeles in four appearances. He will attempt to capture his third ATP title of the year after titles in San Jose in February and Dubai in March.

Roddick converted four of 11 break points and saved all four break points he faced. The Austin, Texas resident enters the championship against 19-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro without losing serve in the tournament (held 24 games and saving nine break points). This will be the first meeting against del Potro.

Roddick comes into his 39th career final (25-13) with a 31-8 match record on the season, including 24-5 on hard courts. During Roddick's career, he has won every North American summer hard court tournament he's played at least once and Los Angeles would be a new addition to his list. Roddick is 8-4 in his career in North American summer hard court finals.

In Saturday's win, Roddick saved two break points in the opening game of the match, then broke in the fourth and eighth games. In the second set, he saved two break points in the third game, then broke in the fourth and and eighth games to secure the victory.

A gutsy Andy Roddick saved two match points before edging out Argentine Eduardo Schwank 4-6 6-4 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals in Washington.

Schwank led the defending champion 5-4 in the third set and 40-15 on his own serve but double-faulted on the second of them as the American broke back and then won the tiebreak 7-2 to advance after two hours, 42 minutes.

Roddick will next play Serbian Viktor Troicki, who reached his second quarter-final of the year with a 6-4 1-6 6-4 win over American Bobby Reynolds.

"You probably don't want to go two match points down, but I probably needed a tough match like this," Roddick said.

"It's been a little bit since I toughed one of those out, so hopefully in the long run it will end up being a good thing."

In relatively cool, overcast conditions, Roddick was made to work overtime before scrambling past an inspired Schwank, converting only three of 16 break points in the process.

A clay-courter in style but seemingly at home on hard courts, Schwank has risen up the rankings from 171st at the start of the year to 56th.

He broke to lead 3-2 after an errant Roddick backhand and frustrated the American further by saving seven break points in an epic sixth game, holding serve thanks to a sublime angled volley to lead 4-2.

Roddick had chances to break back for 5-5 but Schwank saved his ninth break point of the set before closing it out after 67 minutes.

More break points came and went for Roddick at the start of the second set and games stayed on serve until the 10th game when he finally broke through the Argentine's resistance to level the match.

This time it was Roddick's turn to save a break point, in the opening game of the decider, and when he broke in the fourth game on the way to a 4-1 lead, the match looked over.

But Schwank hit back, breaking in the seventh game and then again in the ninth to lead 5-4.

Serving for the match, Schwank squandered one match point and then double-faulted on the second, before the American snatched the break back to level and eventually clinch the tiebreak.

However, Del Potro warned that fatigue was setting in after completing his seventh match in nine days.

"I am very tired and tired in my head," Del Potro said. "But I want to keep winning matches and tomorrow I have the opportunity to get to another final, so I am very happy.

"His serve is very difficult to return," Del Potro said of the American. "I tried to move a little bit when he was serving, hoping he would be disturbed a little, and I broke him twice."

Former world number two Haas, who had more surgery on his troublesome shoulder earlier this year, found himself 4-1 down to Alejandro Falla of Colombia before bouncing back for a place in the last four.

"He came out really strong, but once I went a double-break down, I started to feel a lot better and he got a bit tight," Haas said.

Haas said he would have to play well to stand a chance against Del Potro.

"I think I am going to have to mix it up," he said. "He is the man to beat really and is very solid, but I think I have the game and I just need to take my opportunities."

From the moment he won his first and, to date, only Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open in 2003, Andy Roddick has had to cope with the huge expectations of the home nation at Flushing Meadows.

While double champion Andre Agassi had one last hurrah when he reached the final in 2005, Roddick has been the one American ever-present over the past five years.

Four times a quarter-finalist, he reached the final in 2006, losing to Roger Federer, the man who has won the title every year since Roddick beat Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero to lift the trophy in 2003.

Having flown the flag for so long, Roddick goes into next week's U.S. Open short of match practice after a number of injuries and is an outsider for the title.

Roddick, though, remains confident that he can go far in the year's final Grand Slam event.

"It's a while since I have been (under the radar), maybe '01 or '02," the world number eight said.

"But I am not someone who needs someone talking about them. I am more concerned with how I am playing. I realise there are better storylines this summer, (Roger) Federer (losing his number one ranking), (Rafael) Nadal, (Novak) Djokovic playing well on hard courts and Andy Murray playing well, so I don't need that.

"I just want to play well and I feel like I can make a big run there. I know I can certainly compete."

Having beaten Nadal, Federer and Djokovic in the first few months of the year, Roddick's season hit the brakes in June when he hurt his shoulder. The American played through the injury at Wimbledon but was beaten in the second round.

A stiff neck kept him out of the Masters Series event in Cincinnati last month, leaving him just two events to find his form.

"I probably came back too early," Roddick admitted. "Would I do it again? Yes, because it was Wimbledon."

Roddick was the highest-ranked player not to compete at the Olympics in Beijing, believing that staying at home to play on hard courts was better preparation for Flushing Meadows than travelling halfway across the world and back.

He reached the final in Los Angeles but was beaten in the quarter-finals in Washington by lowly-ranked Serbian Viktor Troicki last week.

"Cincinnati is one of my favourite events, usually a tournament that I do well in, so (missing) that put a little hole in the summer," Roddick said.

"I think not going to the Olympics is actually beneficial for me right now. I have been able to squeeze in two more tournaments, in Washington and LA. My expectations are a lot better than they were when I was sitting on a couch after Cincinnati."

Roddick, who turns 26 on the middle Saturday of the U.S. Open, said he craved another Grand Slam crown.

Would he take the offer of one more major title, on the proviso that he quit the sport the next day?

"That's actually a question I've thought about before and I think I change my answer daily," he said.

"In two, three years' time, it would be a no-brainer. My gut reaction is yes but I think when I reflect I'd probably say no. I enjoy playing so much, the whole process, trying to figure out how to win. I am not sure I could give that up."

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I mean, it was a little while ago when I won, so you'd like to think it's still relevant, but who knows.

I think the biggest thing about New York is playing a night session. It's a different animal than any other tournament. I feel comfortable in the fact that I've been in most situations here at this tournament, good and bad.

So I'd like to think I'm ready for it.


Q. How are you? How do you feel you're playing right now?

ANDY RODDICK: Getting better. I've actual enjoyed having a practice week that's been healthy. I've kind of been going from not playing and then jumping straight into tournaments, which isn't ideal, you know, but you've got to kind of play the hand you're dealt.

So it's been a good week, and, you know, hopefully I'll be there when the final comes around.


Q. You said you've been having some training. How about the two weeks where you weren't playing in the US Open Tour instead of playing Beijing, would that help you here where you had some good results?

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I played ‑‑ I probably played average in those two events, but it definitely helped me get back into match shape, you know. I don't feel like I was in great shape going into LA. I'd been off for a little while.

And even just playing points in the rhythm of a match, I think that helped.


Q. How does your shoulder feel now?

ANDY RODDICK: It feels fine. Yeah, it's good.


Q. How do you feel about Santoro in the first round?

ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, I mean, it's tricky. He doesn't really play like anybody else on tour, that's for sure. He's certainly experienced and is not going to be intimidated by any situation.

When I've done well in Slams, I've started off with tough draws before. So, you know, you have to be ready to play from the word "go" here.


Q. In terms of travel and jet lag, is there any advantage to having skipped Beijing over a lot of the guys who went?

ANDY RODDICK: I don't know. There's a week in between, but I just think for my sake, being able to get two tournaments, getting matches in, and like I said, at least playing my way into shape a little bit after the injuries, was probably a good move as far as my tennis goes.


Q. You talked about the difference of the Open compared to the other Slams. Do you think, Nadal never having gotten past the quarterfinals, do you think it's sort of a disadvantage? I'm not saying he's the clear‑cut favorite, but how do you view the fact that Nadal hasn't done well here and everyone's still saying he's clear cut?

ANDY RODDICK: I think it's deserved. I mean, you judge it based on the leadup events, I think, and there's no doubt he's been the best player on tour this year so far.

If anything, he's going to look at it as a challenge that he wants to overcome. He's playing the best tennis, you know. For us to sit here and speculate about what it is about New York, I think you have to hear that from him.


Q. Do you think we can expect another Grand Slam from you here?

ANDY RODDICK: I couldn't hear that.


Q. Do you expect another Grand Slam from you this year?

ANDY RODDICK: From me this year? Well, I'm going to have to start working if that's the case. I certainly hope so.


Q. As an astute observer of the game as you are, can you talk by a little bit about Roger? He's is the three‑time defending champion. I know Nadal is playing as well as he is. But can you assess Roger a little bit coming into this tournament, and what kind of chances do you give him?

ANDY RODDICK: Well, I think he's got as good a shot as anybody. I think it's tough to play perfect for five years in a row. He's only done it four years in a row.

You know, I think the biggest thing ‑‑ I don't know if he's thinking sometimes out there, but it's a tough situation when you feel like you're getting ‑‑ you've made 17 straight semifinals in Slams or whatever it is now, and if you're not thinking about it, being asked about it every day, it's bound to go into your head a little bit.

But I think one big result and it's turned right around for him. I know pretty much every player except for one that would take his bad year. So I think you have to use a little bit of perspective. He's created a bit of a monster for himself.

After a tumultuous day of long, five-set battles that pushed the featured women’s match from Arthur Ashe Stadium to Armstrong to prevent the men’s marquee lineup from starting prohibitively late, Andy Roddick took to the court against Fernando Gonzalez determined to get an early night’s sleep.
He played dreamlike tennis and won going away, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

No. 8 Roddick, who has looked extremely sharp through four rounds at Flushing Meadows, dropping only a single set against a succession of tough opponents, started well and never allowed Gonzalez into the match. Roddick broke the hard-hitting Chilean, the 11th seed, in his first service game and raced to a 6-2 lead in just 26 minutes.

Roddick did everything well. The American hit running passing shots off both wings; charged the net repeatedly, taking 20 of 29 points in the front court; and won 93% of his first-serve points.

“I did pitch a good ball game,” said Roddick, decked out in a black baseball hat in his post-match press conference.

Roddick cracked 30 winners and, most impressively, committed only 7 unforced errors to finish off Gonzalez with great haste, in just 1 hour, 27 minutes. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – the latter Roddick’s next opponent in the quarterfinals – each spent more than three-and-a-half hours on court.

Roddick looks to improve upon last year’s quarterfinal exit from the US Open. “Now I’m in line to make something really good happen,” he said.

Roddick and Djokovic have played just twice, both times on hard courts; each player has one victory.

Roddick is definitely the one to beat on the American team and, with a 29-9 Davis Cup record, beating him in this competition is never easy but Ferrer, who was able to convert three of four break point chances, rose to the occasion.

After the tense and emotional victory by world No. 1 Rafael Nadal over Davis Cup first-timer Sam Querrey, the crowd in the 21,000 seat Plaza de Toros Las Ventas, including Prince Felipe of Spain, might have been forgiven for being a little flat but instead the atmosphere was celebratory and good-natured as Spain’s No. 2 Ferrer whose Davis Cup experience at 4-2 was considerably less than Roddick’s.


Roddick in great form

The American was surely buoyed by the fight that Querrey staged against Nadal (whom Roddick will face in Sunday’s reverse singles) but Ferrer, who had defeated his opponent in three of their five previous meetings, looked confident and comfortable in the opening set, forcing a tiebreak where he capitalised on a Roddick forehand error at 6-5 to win the opening set.

In the second set, Roddick hit an outstanding forehand winner crosscourt at 15-40 to break Ferrer for a 3-2 lead and broke again for a 5-2 lead before securing the second set with an ace 6-2.

Roddick rolled over Ferrer in the third 6-1 and it looked like a certain American victory but the Spanish No. 2 had other ideas, getting an early break in the fourth from a series of unforced errors by Roddick. Ferrer held on to the lead, converting his first set point opportunity with a forehand winner to level the match at two sets all.

“At no point did I think all was lost,” said Ferrer. “I always thought I had a chance if I hung in there. He was serving very well in the second and third set and I was missing a lot of opportunities.”

Andy Roddick heeft de samenwerking met zijn coach Patrick McEnroe (foto, links) beëindigd. Dat meldt Tennis.nl maandag. De captain van het Amerikaanse Davis Cup-team begeleidde Roddick richting de US Open. Daar reikte Roddick tot de kwartfinales, waar hij zijn meerdere moest erkennen in Novak Djokovic.

‘Patrick heeft de Davis Cup, hij houdt zich bezig met spelersontwikkeling in de VS, en hij heeft straks drie meisjes jonger dan twee jaar bij hem over de vloer rennen. Zondag verloor Roddick nog kansloos van Rafael Nadal in de Davis Cup-ontmoeting met Spanje. Spanje won die confrontatie met 4-1.
