The government will not let news cameras inside the shelters and instead releases images they want us to see. These videos were provided to CBS News by attorney Michael Avenatti, a frequent critic of the Trump administration, and were apparently shot by an employee who was troubled by family separations and recently quit, reports CBS News' Vladimir Duthiers.

When we first see Leo, he is all smiles, but that smile disappears when he's asked if he's sad about being away from his mother. Avenatti, who represents Leo's mother Lourdes, said the two were separated 48 hours after arriving at the Texas border on May 10.

"She had no idea where he was for the better part of three weeks and she was distraught over it," Avenatti said. "She's been deported back to Guatemala."

Leo was sent to the Cayuga Centers in New York.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the federal government to reunite migrant parents with children taken from them under the Trump administration’s family separation policy.

U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw, based in San Diego, issued a preliminary injunction on Tuesday night requiring that nearly all children younger than 5 be returned to their parents within 14 days and that older children be returned within 30 days.

Blasting the Trump administration for what he called “a chaotic circumstance of the Government’s own making,” Sabraw said it was a “startling reality” that no adequate planning had been done before officials embarked on a policy to separate children from parents kept in immigration custody or referred for criminal prosecution. The practice has led to more than 2,300 children being separated from their parents or other family members.

“The government readily keeps track of personal property of detainees in criminal and immigration proceedings,” Sabraw wrote in his 24-page order. “Money, important documents, and automobiles, to name a few, are routinely catalogued, stored, tracked and produced upon a detainee’s release, at all levels — state and federal, citizen and alien. Yet, the government has no system in place to keep track of, provide effective communication with, and promptly produce alien children. The unfortunate reality is that under the present system migrant children are not accounted for with the same efficiency and accuracy as property. Certainly, that cannot satisfy the requirements of due process.”

Mr. Trump said on Wednesday morning that he supports a bipartisan push in Congress to expand the authority of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or Cfius, which reviews foreign investments for security threats. Mr. Trump said he will back an expansion of the committee’s powers to address concerns about China buying stakes in American companies in order to acquire valuable technology and trade secrets.

“I have concluded that such legislation will provide additional tools to combat the predatory investment practices that threaten our critical technology leadership, national security, and future economic prosperity,” Mr. Trump said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

The administration had been considering much more draconian curbs on Chinese investment as punishment for what the White House has said is years of China “stealing” intellectual property from the United States. While the expansion of Cfius will likely curb Chinese investments, it is not as targeted a measure as the administration had been contemplating. If approved by Congress, the legislation would give the administration greater power to curb investments globally — not just those from China — by expanding the types of transactions Cfius can review, including minority stakes in American companies and real estate transactions near military bases or other national security facilities.

Putting out a new U.S. peace plan at this moment would be a terrible mistake that would likely only make matters worse. The White House should instead postpone whatever peace plan is in the works and focus foremost on stabilizing the situation in Gaza.

It is impossible to be a mediator in a conflict or release a credible peace plan when one side refuses to even talk to you. Palestinian leaders have not met with senior U.S. officials for the past six months, since Trump announced that he would move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. In that context, the content of a plan would not matter. The Palestinians would reject it out of hand.
