She also likened the work of mainstream climate scientists to “the dogmatic claims of ideologues and clerics.” White is a member of the CO2 Coalition, a group that seeks to educate “thought leaders, policy makers, and the public about the important contribution made by carbon dioxide to our lives and the economy.”
In an op-ed published in The Hill newspaper last year, White took aim at Obama-era policies that sought to slow global warming by limiting carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants. Climate scientists point to the rising concentrations of carbon emitted into the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels with a corresponding increase in global average temperatures.
“The truth is that our bodies, blood and bones are built of carbon!” White wrote. “Carbon dioxide is a necessary nutrient for plant life, acting as the catalyst for the most essential energy conversion process on planet earth: photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is an odorless, invisible, harmless and completely natural gas lacking any characteristic of a pollutant.”
A native of Kansas, White holds degrees from Stanford University in East Asian studies and comparative literature.
White House spokeswoman Kelly Love said White is “eminently qualified.”
“Her nomination was cleared by the Office of Government Ethics,” Love said. “We look forward to Mrs. White being confirmed.”
The Council on Environmental Quality coordinates federal environmental efforts and works with agencies and White House offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives. According to its congressional mandate, the council is to “encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment” and promote “efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere.”
Environmental groups and Democrats quickly criticized White’s pending nomination, which will require confirmation by the Republican-controlled Senate.
Christy Goldfuss, who chaired the Council on Environmental Quality under President Barack Obama, said White’s alliance with the fossil fuel industry “makes her unfit to hold the highest environmental post in the government to advise the president on the real moral threat to our county: climate change.” Goldfuss is a vice president of energy and environmental policy at the left-leaning Center for American Progress.
Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune called White’s selection “outrageous.”
“The nomination of Kathleen Hartnett White is the nightmare scenario for anyone who wants clean air and clean water,” he said. “Her record makes clear she is completely ready and willing to sell out the health of our kids to corporate polluters.”

New data obtained by HuffPost shows hate crimes rose nationally in 2016. The numbers for 2017 aren’t looking great either.

Grofweg hebben planten vier dingen nodig om te groeien. Koolstof, stikstof, fosfaat en water. Inderdaad, zonder koolstofdioxide kan een plant niet groeien. Maar zonder stikstof en fosfaat ook niet.
Er zijn nauwelijks plekken in de wereld waar CO2 momenteel de beperkende factor voor plantengroei is. De beperkende factoren zijn in de meeste gebieden stikstof en fosfaat. Door de beperking daaraan, kunnen er niet meer planten groeien. Da's ook de reden dat boeren kunstmest gebruiken (stikstof en fosfaat) in plaats van koolstof uit te strooien, want daarvan is er al genoeg.
Stikstof komt hoofdzakelijk vrij bij het verbranden van fossiele brandstof. Dat is de laatste decennia enorm omlaag gebracht wel. Niet vanwege planten, maar omdat stikstof, wanneer het in aanraking komt met water, ammonia vormt. Dat noemen we zure regen en dat hebben we gelukkig vrij ver terug kunnen dringen. Nog een argument van vele Trumpeteers is dat we niks meer horen over zure regen overigens, dus het moet wel een hoax geweest zijn. Nee, dat is het dus niet, het is een milieuprobleem wat we al succesvol aangepakt hebben. Hetzelfde geldt overigens voor dat gat in de ozonlaag.
Een andere die er meer is, is fosfaat. En dat komt vooral omdat we zo verschrikkelijk onverstandig omgaan met het landbouwareaal. Wanneer boeren verkeerde manieren van bemesting gebruiken, stroomt het fosfaat bij de eerste de beste regenbui van het land af het oppervlaktewater in. Het is wat je in Nederland ook vaak zien: hele sloten vol met algen en andere groene troep. Dat is fosfaat, niet CO2.
En dan nog iets, dit speelt maar regionaal. De mate van verwoestijning is veel hoger dan de mate van vergroening. Ergo: er verdwijnt meer bebosd gebied uit gematigde klimaatzones vanwege droogte, dan dat erbij komt in gebieden met tropisch- of zeeklimaat. Kijk maar naar de enorme bosbranden in Californië en Spanje, of naar het uitbreiden van de Sahara, Gobi en Kalahari woestijnen.
TLDR
Dus já, er zijn inderdaad een aantal plekken waar CO2 bijdraagt aan plantengroei. Voor de meeste plaatsen waar plantengroei toeneemt, is dit echter toe te schrijven aan onverantwoorde bemesting (fosfaat). Daarnaast neemt door verwoestijning de groenbedekking van de planeet veel harder af dan dat het groeit. Met name ook in het nog steeds niet genoemde Californië.
Nu is het tijd om de democratie te verdedigen.

Punt is vooral dat we veel meer afhankelijk zijn, voor wat betreft plantengroei dan, van de overige gassen in de atmosfeer. Ook niet zo gek, want CO2 schommelt rond de halve procent in aandeel.
Eigenlijk ook allemaal niet zo heel erg relevant, wat die vrouw opvoert is er één uit de categorie "global warming is goed, want dan kunnen we een maandje langer buiten eten". Er zijn inderdaad plaatsen op de wereld die qua biodiversiteit en leefbaarheid beter af zijn met de veranderende atmosfeer, maar dat is ten eerste regionaal en ten tweede tijdelijk. Het is bullshit om één (mogelijk) positieve uitwerking te noemen van de veranderende atmosferische samenstelling, en dan aan te nemen dat het allemaal geweldig is. Dat is het niet.
En die verandering? Tja, zo'n snelle verandering van atmosferische samenstelling hebben we één keer eerder gezien in de geschiedenis van de aarde. Zou je before- en afterfoto's hebben, zou je ze niet kunnen herkennen. Ook wel mooi dat men nu claimt dat "de mens veel te klein is voor een dergelijke invloed". De vorige keer, zo'n 500 miljoen jaar terug, waren het ééncellige cyanobacteriën
Volgens mij komt mevrouw uit Texas toch? Daar verwoestijnt de boel vanuit het westen steeds harder. Ik zou er niet al te blij mee zijn.

Ik was gisteren verdwaald op Youtube, kwam dit tegen. Heb het destijds zelf niet gezien, maar het is een Trump impersonator bij Jinek, die even voordoet hoe zeer hij van de hak op de tak springt.
En dat zie je ook terug in zijn beleid. De man heeft een concentratieboog van enkele seconden hooguit. Dan is zo'n beetje alles moeilijk en frustrerend.
