Lyon start 19 oktoberquote:Andy Falls In Madrid
Unfortunately, Andy’s Madrid campaign was brought to an end by talented Frenchman Gael Monfils with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
Andy applied himself in the match with the utmost intensity and dedication to the cause, determined to reach the quarterfinals for the first time, and at times played to a very high level. However, Roland Garros semifinalist Monfils was able to produce quality tennis at the key moments to squeeze out the victory.
One break in each set was enough for both players. Monfils made a breakthrough in Andy’s first service game of the match, after Andy had held chances on the Frenchman’s serve, and Andy was unable to claw his way back into contention.
Changing things up with some largely successful net play, Andy’s persistence was rewarded early in the second set, as he broke to lead 3-1 as an under-pressure Monfils sent a forehand wide. Strong serving from Andy, and more fine volleying, closed out the set 6-3.
The players were inseparable for the most part in the deciding set, both taking good care of their service games and making few inroads on the other’s serve. It was always going to come down to one or two points, and it was Monfils who was on the winning end of them.
With Andy serving at 3-4, the Parisian found the mark on two glorious forehand passes to break Andy’s resolve and earn a 5-3 lead. Serving for the match he made no mistake, sealing victory on his first match point with an ace.
Monfils goes on to face Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.
Andy, who remains a strong contender for one of the final four berths at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, has two tournaments left to secure his place, staring with Lyon next week. Others around him in the ATP 2008 Race have also fallen early this week, including Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Gonzalez, David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka, which should help his cause.

The American, who is sixth in Race, will battle for one of three remaining places at the eight-man Tennis Masters Cup when he plays the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris next week. Paris is the final event of the regular season.
But two of the three Frenchmen in the Lyon semifinals continued to boost their Shanghai hopes Friday. Gilles Simon (pictured) moved into eighth spot in the ATP 2008 Race, 51 points clear of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who moved to 12th.
Because Roddick's 'best fifth' result of the 2008 season is 22 points (earned by reaching the Tokyo semifinals), the 11 points he earns in Lyon will not be one of his countable results of the year that make up his final Race points total. Had Roddick won the Lyon title and earned 45 Race points, then his Race total would have increased by 23 points (45 points less the 22 points from Tokyo that no longer would count in his total.)
Roddick has qualified for the past five Tennis Masters Cups, although he did not play in 2005 due to injury.

quote:This is how Braasch remembers the day: "They came into the ATP Office and said that they would like to play one of the men," said Braasch. "I just happened to be in the room and they were saying that they thought they could beat someone who was ranked 200 in the world. At the time I was No. 203 and I said: "If you think you can beat me, we can go out there right now." With Serena, the score was 6-1 and then Venus came and asked to play, and I said, ‘if you want to play, we can play’. That was 6-2." "When they first came in they were looking at the media guide because they had seen someone practicing who they thought they could beat, and they wanted to know who it was. It was Francisco Clavet. When they said that, there were 10 guys on the floor."
"Afterwards, Venus spoke to the press and said that maybe she could actually beat someone who was 350 in the world. But the thing is that I was due to lose all my points from the 1997 Australian Open the next week so I told the press "OK, we can do it again next week when I am 350 if you like!".
quote:Braasch smiled at their claims.
"Against anyone in the top 500, no chance," Braasch said, "because I was playing like 600 today."
Venus was still in the tournament at the time so a match was set between Serena and Braasch for Sunday. Rain postponed that until yesterday and with the sun shining Serena and Braasch showed up ready to defend the honour of their sexes.
At least that's how Serena saw it. For Braasch, it was a joke. He never even considered the possibility he might be ridiculed by the other men players if he lost.
"Everyone knew that there's no chance for them," he said. "They were talking to me, that I should go out and beat them by as much as possible. They said make it 24 points and go off the court."
He played, he said, for fun, "because tennis doesn't have to be serious, especially when you're out of the tournament." Braasch lost last week in the singles and doubles.
Braasch, a left-handed junk ball expert with a convoluted service motion, won the first five games against Serena. He ran her dizzy all over the court, showing her a befuddling assortment of spins.
He could have hit harder if he wanted, taken her out of points sooner, but as her unofficial coach, Nick Bollettieri, noted at courtside, "He's being kind to her."
As Serena and Braasch shook hands, Venus entered the court and issued her own challenge to Braasch.
Venus had as little success as Serena when the match got under way. She lost her first service game at love, managed only one point on Braasch's serve and dropped her next serve.
But after going down 4-0, Venus held serve at love as Braasch hit several errors.
Perhaps boredom was setting in because Braasch then lost his own serve to 4-2 when Venus cracked a sizzling forehand past him on her second break point.
Braasch wasn't about to let the set get away. He stepped up his pace a bit, overpowered Venus on her serve and closed out the match with an ace.
"I took at least 50 per cent off my serve," Braasch said.
"I came out with a few hard ones, but not too much because then it's not fun anymore and it was supposed to be fun."

quote:Andy Roddick has made the semifinals of Australian Open 2009 after ill opponent Novak Djokovic was forced to retire in the fourth set of their quarterfinal clash on Tuesday afternoon at a warm Rod Laver Arena
With temperatures hovering in the mid-30s, Roddick was leading 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2 2-1 when Djokovic, the men’s singles champion in 2008, retired after two hours and 29 minutes.
Djokovic was clearly not himself from the beginning of the third set, and laboured for the final 11 games of the match battling cramps and heat stress before taking the decision to withdraw.
The first set, which lasted 50 minutes, went on serve before Djokovic stole an early 4-0 lead in the tiebreak after some blistering groundstrokes. The Serb then ran Roddick around the court, putting away a forehand volley for a 5-2 lead, and, on serve, crushed a forehand into the open court to win the tiebreaker 7-3. Neither player was forced to defend a break point opportunity in the set, while Djokovic’s 16 unforced errors for the set largely negated his 21-10 advantage over Roddick in winners.
In the second set, Roddick earned the first two break points of the match in the seventh game and after 77 minutes of play, converting the break on the second of them and jumping to a 4-3 lead. The American then held a set point in Djokovic’s next service game, but the Serb recovered to hold and trail 4-5. Roddick then served out the set 6-4, producing four monster first serves and finishing the set winning 17 of the 18 points when he landed his first ball, serving at 82 per cent for the set. Djokovic won just two points on the Roddick serve for the set, which lasted 41 minutes.
Roddick continued his momentum into the first game of the third set, breaking Djokovic immediately only for the Serb to repay the favour in the very next game. Roddick held two break points in the following game, which went to deuce three times before Djokovic held serve to take a 2-1 lead. A distressed Djokovic then called for the trainer at the end of the third game of the set, with ice being rubbed into his calves and quads at the subsequent medical time-out. After Roddick held, the American broke Djokovic again to take a 3-2 lead after a superb backhand chip down the line which Djokovic could only drive into the net. Roddick then broke the Serb in the seventh game to love, Djokovic serving his fourth double fault of the match to fall behind 2-5. Roddick then comfortably served out the 45-minute third set to love, winning 32 points to Djokovic’s 19 for the set.
Djokovic saved four break points in a seven-minute opening game of the fourth set to hold for 1-0, and after Roddick held for 1-1, he broke Djokovic to love in the next game. Djokovic then retired, handing Roddick his passage to the final four.
The American, who has now qualified for his fourth Melbourne Park semifinal, will play the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal between Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and three-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semifinals on Thursday night.
Quick facts
Roddick served at 71 per cent for the match, and had 16 aces to Djokovic’s eight
Djokovic had 39 unforced errors to Roddick’s 14
Roddick won 87 per cent of points when his first serve was successful
Both players recorded 43 winners
Roddick’s fastest first serve was 224km/h
Djokovic converted his only break point chance, while Roddick was 5-for-12 (42 per cent) on break point opportunities

quote:Stepanek Steps Up
Feeling good on a court where he’d won three titles, moving through a brisk 18-minute pre-match hit with his friend Justin Gimelstob, surely Andy Roddick felt good about his chances of taking on another pal, Mardy Fish, in the first all-American SAP Open final since the two also met up here in 2004.
So it was that Roddick commenced his semifinal against Radek Stepanek in brisk fashion, breaking Stepanek’s serve straightaway, riding that cushion to a 6-3 first set victory.
Then, a funny thing happened on the way to the finals. Throughout the second set, as Stepanek’s suspect forehand seemed near the brink of disintegration, Roddick was unable to pull away. Instead it was Stepanek who battened down the hatches and slowly find ways to disrupt Roddick. T
he Stepanek forehand settled, his backhand kept rolling deep and slicing slow as he began creeping his way into net, floating back Roddick’s serve – and then throwing down big serves of his own. Still, with Roddick serving at 3-3 in the second set tiebreak, the American seemed on the path. After all, he simply needed one point on Stepanek’s serve to gain the go-ahead mini-break.
“I didn’t bear down in the second set,” said Roddick.
But it was Stepanek who took the intiative, grabbing hold of a few points, making his way forward and frustrating Roddick just enough to snag the tie-break and level the match. A perplexed Roddick started the third quite angry at himself. Though he held to open the decisive set, in each of the next three games Roddick held a 40-15 – and lost each one to go down 3-1.
By now Stepanek held a comfortable cushion and Roddick was unwilling to do much more than use his serve, forehand and tenacity to grub his way out of a jam. Stepanek had become the initiator. Though his balls were hardly fast, they were well-directed, constantly confounding Roddick in the way that would please many a tennis connoisseur. At proper times, Stepanek slithered his way into the net to poke adroit volleys.
“He did a really good job of defending, and he was driving the ball well,” said Roddick.
Surviving a double-fault when serving at match point at 5-4, Stepanek also fought off a break point to close it out, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Disruptive, clever, quick and effective, Stepanek had composed a mini-masterpiece.

quote:Roddick fired 20 aces and never faced a break point in his 7-6(1), 6-2 win over defending champion Steve Darcis of Belgium. The top American lost only seven points on serve (44 of 51) in 10 service games in the one hour and six minute opening round match.
Roddick improved to 13-3 on the season and he will next face countryman Robby Ginepri for the ninth time (Roddick leads 7-1) in the second round at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
quote:Roddick breezes past Ginepri
Andy Roddick blew away fellow American Robby Ginepri 6-2 6-3 to move into the third round of the Memphis Championships.
The big-serving Roddick was delighted after recording 11 aces and serving no double faults.
"That's the best I've ever played," he said. "I was in a zone out there. I hit every forehand as hard as I could and it was going in every time. It's as simple as that."
Top-seeded Roddick, who lost in the semifinals of last week's San Jose Open, outplayed his compatriot, breaking Ginepri's serve a total of eight times.
Ginepri occupied the court for just over an hour. He fell behind early as he struggled with his serve and Roddick attacked a vulnerable second serve.
Roddick, the world number six, lost just eight points on his potent first serve.
"I (could) sense that (Ginepri) was kind of like, 'we both know you're not this good,'" Roddick said. "I wish I could play like that every time."
Trying to capture the title in his ninth appearance at The Racquet Club, Roddick will meet American Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals in a matchup of two big servers.

En we gaan vrolijk verderquote:Top seed Andy Roddick advanced to his fourth semi-final of the season as he beat No. 8 seed Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, an ATP World Tour 500 tournament, on Friday.
The top American improved to 26-6 lifetime in Memphis by reaching his fifth semi-final (or better) in nine appearances. He captured the title in 2002 and reached the final in 2003 and '07.
Roddick won the opening set with a break in the ninth game as he only lost six points on serve (20 of 26). In the second set, Querrey broke for a 3-1 lead and then served seven aces in the next three games to even the match. In the decisive set, Roddick broke for a 2-0 advantage when Querrey netted a forehand. Roddick never faced a break point the rest of the way as he lost only five points on serve.
"I feel confident going into matches," said Roddick, who is off to a 16-3 start this year. "So far I feel great but I’d like to have a win to show for it.” Roddick reached the final in Doha and semi-finals at the Australian Open and San Jose.
Querrey fired 15 aces to Roddick's 11 in the one hour and 43-minute meeting but only had a 57 per cent first serve mark compared to Roddick's 78 per cent.
Roddick will face Lleyton Hewitt in the semi-finals. Hewitt is 6-3 lifetime against Roddick but the American has won the last two meetings ('05 Cincinnati SF and '06 US Open QF). This will be the first semi-final in Memphis between two former World No. 1s in the history of the tournament (since 1977).

Top seed Andy Roddick rallied for a 2-6 7-6 6-4 semi-final victory over Australian Lleyton Hewitt, setting up a revenge match with Czech Radek Stepanek in the ATP Memphis final.
After being outplayed by his unseeded opponent in the opening set, Roddick found his form in the second and sent the contest into a decider when a Hewitt sent a forehand into the net when trailing 6-4 in the tiebreak.
The 26-year-old American broke for the only time in the final set when Hewitt belted a backhand into the net in the seventh game and despite squandering a pair of match points two games later, Roddick served out the match to love.
The world number six was broken twice in the opening set, which Hewitt closed out with his fourth ace, before both players held serve throughout the second set with the Australian saving six break points and Roddick two.
Roddick finished the two-hour, 11-minute match with 16 aces to Hewitt's 14 in the battle of two former world number ones.
"I played pretty well today and served well," Hewitt, who was bidding for his first ATP World Tour final since March 2007, told reporters.
"I had a couple of chances in the second set and couldn't convert. Then in the third I was holding serve relatively easy but then I played a few loose points when I got broken.
Roddick, who is seeking his first title of the year, is 4-1 in career matches against world number 19 Stepanek.

Roddick, who lost to Stepanek in the semi-finals of the San Jose Open last week, ended his opponent's bid for back-to-back titles when he converted on his second match point to clinch a 27th career title.
"A week ago (in San Jose) I felt like I was in control of the match but he played better when it counted on the big points," Roddick said. "I played better today on the big points.
"Right now I'm looking at it as a process and it's great to win a title. It's nice to get it out of the way before it becomes an issue."
Memphis champion in 2002 and runner-up in 2003 and 2007, Roddick got off to bright start with an early break to race 3-0 ahead on his way to securing the opening set, the first taken from Stepanek all week.
In the second set, both players held serve throughout, Roddick saving two break points at 15-40 in the ninth game and one more break point in the 11th game with one of his eight aces.
Leading 6-5 and Stepanek serving to stay in the match, Roddick set up a triple match point and while the fifth seed was able to stave off the first, the 26-year-old American sealed victory on his next attempt.
"I had some break chances in the second set and couldn't convert and that was the difference," said Stepanek. "His game is based around his serve and he served really well when he had to.
"We had a great match and a lot of good rallies. The only difference was break points and I couldn't convert when I had chances."

Dat beweren verschillende bronnen tegen People.
quote:Andy Roddick married his fiancée, Brooklyn Decker, in a twilight ceremony at his Austin, Texas, home on Friday, PEOPLE has confirmed.
The tennis pro, 26, and the swimsuit model, 21, exchanged vows in an intimate candlelit ceremony before a group of close friends and family.
"They are absolutely perfect for each other," a family friend tells PEOPLE. "I think they knew that from the moment they met that they were perfect for each other."
At the ceremony, bridesmaids wore strapless, chocolate-colored gowns, and the setting was decorated with bright, tropical flowers. Guests – including tennis greats Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi – were also treated to a musical performance by Roddick's longtime friend, Sir Elton John.
The wedding was followed by dinner at Roddick's local country club.
Roddick and Decker, who started dating in 2007, announced their engagement in March 2008. The pair first met after Roddick asked his agent to track down a number for Decker, who appeared in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.

May 30, 12:12am GMT+5 by andyroddick.com
Andy will meet Frenchman Marc Gicquel on Saturday for a place in the Roland Garros fourth round.
World No. 46 Marc Gicquel is looking to reach the fourth round of a major for just the second time, having first done so at the 2006 US Open – when he lost to Roger Federer. The right-hander enjoyed a comfortable first-round win over No. 27 seed Rainer Schuettler before battling past Andreas Beck in four tight sets in the second round.
The 32-year-old Gicquel has compiled a 10-13 match record on the season, highlighted by quarter-final showings in Rotterdam and Casablanca. He also won an ATPChallenger Tour title on clay in Bordeaux earlier this month.
Check out Gicquel’s stats courtesy of the ATP World Tour:
Birthdate: 30-Mar-77
Birthplace: Tunis, Tunisia
Residence: Boulogne-Billancourt, France
Height: 6’2’’ (187 cm)
Weight: 165 lbs (75 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 1999
Coach: R. Gilbert & J. Potier
Current South African Airways ATP Ranking: 46
Best South African Airways ATP Ranking: 37 (8-Sep-08)
Andy takes a 2-0 career lead into the clash with Gicquel, having defeated the Frenchman on hard courts at the 2007 Australian Open and 2008 Los Angeles. Gicquel has a 2-13 match record against Top 10 players and has lost his past five efforts against the game’s elite.
Looking ahead to the clash, Andy said: “Obviously it’s going to be a challenging atmosphere. He’s certainly talented, certainly comfortable here. I didn’t see much of his match (on Thursday), but he moves real well. I’m sure he’s very comfortable moving on this surface. I think we’re both pretty familiar with each other’s games. We’ve played a couple times. Obviously it doesn’t get easier.”
The match will take place second on Suzanne Lenglen court on Saturday, with play beginning at 11 AM local time – 10 AM BST, 5 AM ET. Andy follows a ladies’ singles third-round match, so should take to court at around 12:30 PM local time

The number two seed returned beautifully in the first set, seemingly able to pass his Belgian opponent at will, going 5-0 up before Vliegen could get on the board.
"Coming from clay to grass is one of the happiest days of my year," Roddick said.
"I don't have to make a lot of adjustments to my game to play on this surface."
Roddick cruised through a scrappy second set, breaking Vliegen at 4-4 then serving out the match.
"I just wanted to get it done before it had a chance to rain," smiled Roddick, the world number six.
He will next face either Australian Lleyton Hewitt, another four-times winner at Queen's and Wimbledon champion in 2002, or unseeded Portuguese Frederico Gil.

In 36 wedstrijden sloeg Roddick 394 aces.

Roddick flashed into life against Lleyton Hewitt, the 2002 champion, firing 78 winners – including 43 aces – past the Australian for a 6-3, 6-7(10), 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-4 victory on Court One in three hours and 50 minutes. It was Roddick’s fifth straight win in the battle of the former World No. 1s and Grand Slam champions. Three weeks ago Roddick won the pair’s AEGON Championships meeting in two tie-break sets.
The 28-year-old Texas resident will now appear in his first Wimbledon semi-final since 2005, when he reached his second successive final, against third-seeded Scot Andy Murray on Friday.
Roddick served well to take the 27-minute first set, capitalising on two double faults from Hewitt in the Australian’s first service game. But some gutsy counter-punching from Hewitt, in a dramatic 22-point second-set tie-break, levelled the scoreline. Roddick had led 5-2 and had three set-points, but could not convert any of them. Hewitt also squandered two set points, before finally levelling the match when Roddick fired a forehand long.
A left leg injury to Hewitt let Roddick run through the third-set tie-break and it got worse for the World No. 56 when he has his serve broken at the start of the fourth set. But Hewitt’s Fanatics, a large group of Australian fans, cheered their player back to life to take the pair’s 12 meeting into a fifth and deciding set.
Roddick clinched the decisive service break in the ninth game and went on to held serve for victory when Hewitt hit a forehand volley long. Hewitt, who missed six months last year with a hip injury, committed 42 unforced errors and served nine double faults in his first Grand Slam championship quarter-final since the 2006 US Open.

Gehele interview staat hier.quote:“I think the crowd’s going be electric. I think it’s going to be a great atmosphere, and one that I can certainly appreciate, even if it’s not for me. I’m just going to pretend when they say, ‘Come on, Andy!’ that they mean me.”

meerquote:Alhough his total of 27 career titles does not get past Base Camp compared with Federer's 59, he is a threat, and Federer knows it. Having had the wisdom of Jimmy Connors in his corner for a while, Andy has learned the art of scrapping, alley cat fashion, and the arrival of Stefanki has imbued a more tactical awareness.
One aspect of the job where Roddick has never needed any coaching or advice is his ability to talk sensibly and intelligently about himself and the sport. That second round exit here 12 months ago was what stayed with him for a long time and he discussed with his then-fiancee, Brooklyn Decker, whether there was still a future in tennis for him.
"We had a lot of talks about that, and I definitely openly questioned it at that point. So during the off-season we said, at least let's not wonder, let's prepare and give yourself every opportunity. And I did work real hard. I have been committed, from everything to diet and sleep, to everything. I gave myself every opportunity to succeed.
"I'm excited about this one. I didn't know if I was ever going to get to play a Wimbledon final again. I'm thankful to have that opportunity. But you don't go back to a Wimbledon final by accident. It certainly is a process. And Brook has been a very calming influence, someone I can confide in and not have to put up a super brave front in front of." And, 18 defeats or not, the Wimbledon final is a whole new ball game in Roddick's view. "I'm happy where my game's at right now."
