Andy will meet Frenchman Marc Gicquel on Saturday for a place in the Roland Garros fourth round.

World No. 46 Marc Gicquel is looking to reach the fourth round of a major for just the second time, having first done so at the 2006 US Open – when he lost to Roger Federer. The right-hander enjoyed a comfortable first-round win over No. 27 seed Rainer Schuettler before battling past Andreas Beck in four tight sets in the second round.

The 32-year-old Gicquel has compiled a 10-13 match record on the season, highlighted by quarter-final showings in Rotterdam and Casablanca. He also won an ATPChallenger Tour title on clay in Bordeaux earlier this month.

Andy takes a 2-0 career lead into the clash with Gicquel, having defeated the Frenchman on hard courts at the 2007 Australian Open and 2008 Los Angeles. Gicquel has a 2-13 match record against Top 10 players and has lost his past five efforts against the game’s elite.

Looking ahead to the clash, Andy said: “Obviously it’s going to be a challenging atmosphere. He’s certainly talented, certainly comfortable here. I didn’t see much of his match (on Thursday), but he moves real well. I’m sure he’s very comfortable moving on this surface. I think we’re both pretty familiar with each other’s games. We’ve played a couple times. Obviously it doesn’t get easier.”

The match will take place second on Suzanne Lenglen court on Saturday, with play beginning at 11 AM local time – 10 AM BST, 5 AM ET. Andy follows a ladies’ singles third-round match, so should take to court at around 12:30 PM local time

Roddick moves on at Queen's

Roddick took just 55 minutes to down Kristof Vliegen 6-1 6-4.

The number two seed returned beautifully in the first set, seemingly able to pass his Belgian opponent at will, going 5-0 up before Vliegen could get on the board.

"Coming from clay to grass is one of the happiest days of my year," Roddick said.

"I don't have to make a lot of adjustments to my game to play on this surface."

Roddick cruised through a scrappy second set, breaking Vliegen at 4-4 then serving out the match.

"I just wanted to get it done before it had a chance to rain," smiled Roddick, the world number six.

He will next face either Australian Lleyton Hewitt, another four-times winner at Queen's and Wimbledon champion in 2002, or unseeded Portuguese Frederico Gil.

Andy Roddick is er vrijdag in geslaagd de halve finale van het grastoernooi ATP Queen’s te bereiken. Het treffen met de Kroaat Ivo Karlovic stond vooral in het teken van de specialiteit van beide spelers: de ace. Karlovic mocht zich in de kwartfinale servicekoning kronen met 26 aces, maar Roddick (24 aces) won de partij uiteindelijk. Het matchpoint verzilverde de Amerikaan toepasselijk met een ace: 7-6, 7-6.

Karlovic heeft in het huidige seizoen de meeste aces achter zijn naam staan in het tenniscircuit. De Kroaat sloeg 405 directe punten uit de eerste opslag in 23 wedstrijden. Roddick heeft ook een gemiddelde om van te smullen. In 36 wedstrijden sloeg Roddick 394 aces.
