Dat lijkt me toch een wat merkwaardige kwalificatie voor Plasterk; in tegenstelling tot Dekker heeft Plasterk nooit getracht op dubieuze gronden bepaalde wetenschappelijke theorieen te vloeren.

The U.S. government has been manipulating the official inflation rate for more than a decade

"One matter we at NewsMax have confronted, but the financial media won't tell you about, is the inflation lie.

The fact is that the U.S. government has been manipulating the official inflation rate, called the Consumer Price Index (CPI), for more than a decade.

We believe this has been the root of many of the U.S. global imbalances. The U.S. government has gotten caught with the lie in obvious places: The U.S. dollar has declined dramatically — about 40% in recent years. At the time we have witnessed a dramatic rise of a 100% or more in gold, oil, and almost every other commodity.

The reason the dollar has declined and commodity prices are up is simple: the rest of the world says, "There are simply too many dollars; you're inflating your currency; and you'll have to give us many more dollars for our goods."

But how does that jibe with official inflation rates? This year the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports inflation at less than 4%. Last year it was about 3%. Between 2002 and 2004, it averaged about 2%.

Everyone who lives in the real world knows these numbers cannot be true. But once again, few want to challenge the status quo claims.

It's interesting that more and more money gurus talk about the inflation lie.

Recently Barron's interviewed Rudolph-Riad Younes, co manager of the Julius Baer International Equity Fund. Since 2002, Younes stock picks for Barron's have increased by almost 42% a year. His fund has gained 17.5% per annum since 2001.

One reason Younes may be so successful is that he sees the world honestly.

For example, on the inflation matter he notes that "inflation is something there should be no debate about and somehow there is."

He then tears apart the United States for using a "core" inflation number that does not include energy prices and does not accurately capture housing costs, which have skyrocketed. If the government did that it "would change the inflation picture dramatically."

Younes then says bluntly, "If you consider headline inflation and include asset prices instead of rental equivalents, the true inflation number would be between 7% and 10%."

Interestingly, we have argued in FIR that inflation is at least 50% higher than official estimates. Younes then asks a good question. "If real inflation is 7% to 10%, why don't we see it in wages?"

One answer is that most employers in the United States link wages to the official CPI number. Most Americans (unlike most Europeans) obediently accept these official numbers as gospel. Workers are not up in arms because their salaries are being slowly boiled to death. They don't realize how insidious inflation is.

The same can be true of investors. Especially ones that invest in CDs and bonds. If inflation is really 7% today, your CD paying 5% is declining in value at a rate of 2% a year. And don't forget to add the taxes you have to pay on the 5% of interest income — making your net inflation adjusted loss more like 3.5% for the year." (NewsMax.com)

Kuipers, oud-prins van de Rijssense Bolnpeetr’s, kan zich zowel de actie van de carnavalsprins als de verontwaardigde reactie van de SGP-raadsleden voorstellen.
