But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes -- they are private but not insular, pretty but not wimpy; they make gorgeous, delicate melodies sound full-bodied. Led by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch, the seven-piece band has an intimate, majestic sound that is equal parts folk-rock and '60s pop, but Murdoch's gift for not only whimsy and surrealism, but also for odd, unsettling lyrical detail keeps the songs grounded in a tangible reality.
Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Belle & Sebastian released their first two albums in 1996 at the peak of the chamber pop movement. At first, some critics in Britain's music weeklies tied the band into the subgenre, yet the group was too pretty, too delicate, to bear that label. Through their first two years of public existence, the band shielded their personalities, submitting publicity photos featuring a girl that wasn't in the band and reluctantly posing for photo shoots. Furthermore, they performed in odd venues, playing not only the standard coffeehouses and cafes, but also homes, church halls, and libraries.
The idiosyncratic approach to building their career isn't surprising given Murdoch's approach toward beginning a band. A longtime fan of Felt, Murdoch left Glasgow for London in the early '90s in hopes of finding the group's leader, Lawrence Hayward, but he never found his idol. Upon his return to Glasgow he enrolled in university and he began writing songs and short stories. While at school, he took a music business course where he decided to form a band and release a record for his final project (he had tried to form a band before to no success). For the project, he assembled the seven-piece Belle & Sebastian, featuring himself on guitar and vocals, choosing and recruiting members by instinct in a local all-night cafe in late 1995. He eventually found Sarah Martin (violin), Stevie Jackson (guitar), Chris Geddes (keyboards), Stuart David (bass), Richard Colburn (drums), and Isobel Campbell (cello). All seven members were college students, and all agreed that the idea behind the band was to stay on a small scale, to keep it as a project and not let the band run their lives; they even assumed they would release two albums and break up.
In May of 1996, Belle & Sebastian self-released their debut album, Tigermilk, on Electric Honey Records. Only 1,000 copies of the album, which was only pressed on vinyl, were released, but it unexpectedly became a sensation, earning terrific word of mouth throughout England. As a result, the band became slightly more than a school project -- it became an actual band. If You're Feeling Sinister, released on the independent Jeepster label, followed in November of 1996. By the time the album was released in America on the EMI subsidiary The Enclave, it had earned considerable critical acclaim in the U.K. -- not only from music weeklies, but from newspapers like The Sunday Times and magazines like The Face -- and a large cult following; by some accounts, Tigermilk was being sold for as much as 75 pounds. Over the course of 1997, word of mouth continued to grow in America, even as the band pulled out of an American tour because The Enclave went bankrupt and closed.
As the band cult continued to build in 1997, Belle & Sebastian released three EPs -- Dog on Wheels (May), Lazy Line Painter Jane (July), and 3.. 6.. 9 Seconds of Light (October). Each subsequent EP placed higher on the indie charts and received great critical acclaim. By the end of the year, the group finalized an American deal with Matador Records, issuing The Boy With the Arab Strap in September 1998. The following year saw the eagerly anticipated wide re-release of Tigermilk, the album that started it all. Following completion of 2000's Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, Stuart David left Belle & Sebastian to focus full-time on his solo project, Looper. In 2001, the group released two EPs -- Jonathan David and I'm Waking Up to Us -- and recorded the soundtrack for Todd Solondz's film Storytelling. Just before the soundtrack's release in spring 2002, Belle & Sebastian embarked on a comprehensive tour of the United States and Canada before returning to Europe for the summer festival season. Midway through the tour, Isobel Campbell left the band citing the usual differences. Another major change that took place soon after was the band leaving Jeepster and Matador to sign with Rough Trade, with their next record, late 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, produced by the inimitable Trevor Horn (who also produced Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Yes and score of others). The record spawned the brilliant "Step Into My Office" and "I'm a Cuckoo" singles, the latter of which was the group's biggest UK hit reaching #14 in early 2004. After a long worldwide tour which found the band reaching new levels of success, they retired to Scotland and began preparing for the recording of their fifth album.

Van mij mag de gehele wereld plus al het leven op de ons omringende planeten meegenieten hoor, Peaceman. Dat is het niet. Het is dat ik de muziek van B&S beter tot z'n recht vind komen in intiemere zaaltjes. That's all.

Ik dacht net even iets ontdekt te hebben. Luisterde Strings Bean Jean, en vond het verdacht veel op iets lijken. Ergens op zolder dook ik een in een dikke stoflaag gehulde The Offspring CD op (iedereen heeft zo zijn jeugdzondes). En toen wist ik het, dat riffje is bijna precies hetzelfde als in The Kids Aren't Alrigt.
Trots als ik was googelde ik maar even en kwam erachter dat ik niet de enige was die het ontdekt had. Weg droom

Zin in een nieuw album. Hopelijk wat meer de folky sound zoals op If youre being sinister en The boy with the arab strap.
Even een kick, want er is een live plaatje uit van Belle and Sebastian, namelijk The BBC Sessions. Als je er vroeg bij bent kun je nog een bonusdisc scoren met een live concert uit 2001, met wat leuke covers.
Ik heb hem net gehaald en ben er erg blij mee. Recensies zeggen hier en daar dat de versies niet heel veel verschillen van de studio albums, maar dat gaat lang niet altijd op. Een goede toevoeging voor elke B&S liefhebber, en ook een prima album ter introductie van de band (nou ja, eigenlijk eerst Tigermilk en Sinister halen natuurlijk).
Het album bevat tevens 4 onuitgebrachte live nummers, speciaal geschreven voor een Peel sessie. 'Shoot the sexual Athlete', 'The Magic of a Kind Word', 'Nothing in the SIlence' en '(My Girl's got) A Miraculous Technique'.

Leuk CD'tje idd, maar wat is nou de toegevoegde waar ervan? De originele opnames vind ik toch fijner, misschien door nostalgische waard maar goed.

Hmm, ik vind de BBC-sessions cd niet bijster speciaal. De opnames zijn goed en nummers leuk, maar het aanschaffen niet waard, Lazy Jane is wel heel tof, leuke versie, de overige nummers voegen weinig toe. Behalve de laatste 'nieuwe' nummers, maar daarvan is alleen The Magic of a Kind Word ( Isobel

Wil toch ook een tvp in deze topic. Een band die ik al heel lang beluister, maar eigenlijk altijd net een beetje suf heb gevonden. Vind dat nog steeds, maar in de juiste omstandigheden zijn ze geweldig!

As you may know, we’ve been in the studio these last few weeks writing some new tracks and shortly
we will say cheerio to Glasgow for a while when we set off to LA to record our next album.
There’s also been a flurry of online activity this week with the first shows of the year being
announced. So far we can confirm that in July we’ll be playing on the 11th at Ruisrock Festival in
Turku, Finland and a few days later on the 15th we’ll be appearing at Slottsfjell in Tønsberg,
Norway.
Fuji Rock Festival is also confirmed for August 1st, and we’re itching to bring you news of our
first UK show this year which you’ll hear about sometime next week.
We’ll be bringing you updates on Facebook, Twitter & Myspace as well as the Tours section of the
website, so come and seek us out online and you’ll be the first to know what’s going on the
calendar.

Het werd weer eens tijd, jammer van die verloren GHTG-jaren...
There is NO such thing in life as normal!
Nouja zo verloren was het ook weer niet. Het gaf iedereen een beetje de gelegenheid 's wat anders te doen. Zoals Sarah met haar zelfgemaakte spulletjes, Richard met zn DJsets (iemand daar ooit heen geweest?) en Stuart's GHTG dan. Het duurde inderdaad wel erg lang allemaal :p
Ik vond ze ook wel een beetje over hun hoogtepunt heen, wellicht zij zelf ook dus niet gek dat er enige tijd niets van ze te horen was.

Waarom is dit topic nog niet gekickt? Write About Love is een heerlijk album, vol lieve liedjes. Niet wereldschokkend, maar wel weer bovengemiddelde popliedjes. En Belle and Sebastian zijn natuurlijk veel interessanter dan het gros van de indiebandjes.
Het is goed dat je hem bumpt want ik wist niet eens dat er een nieuwe was! Ik ga hem uitchecken

Hah..wel een leuk album nu het gehoord te hebben...maar niet echt bijzonder.geen echte uitschieters, wat Life Pursuit bijvoorbeeld wel had...maar wel echt Belle & Sebastian though, en dat is voor mij ook meteen een beetje het probleem..beetje saai dus maar op zich ook goed, echt hun eigen sound..., En Norah Jones was daardoor stiekem wel een positieve verrassing. Leuke afwisseling

De eerste keer dat ik het album hoorde op de luisterpaal was ik razend enthousiast, maar vanochtend merk ik toch dat ik liever Sufjan Stevens van de paal pak.
Ach, al is het maar voor de collectie, kopen ga ik hem toch wel. Maar begreep van de week in Velvet dat het idd nog enkele weekjes duurt.

Hij heeft wel een paar draaibeurten nodig volgens mij. En vernieuwend is het al zeker niet, maar B&S staat altijd garant voor een bepaalde basiskwaliteit en die is er ook nu weer. Verrassend optreden van Norah Jones ook.

Ik zit in een Belle and Sebastian periode. Dat wil zeggen, ik luister de enige cd die ik van ze heb, The Boy With The Arab Strap (staat sinds 1999 in mijn kast) alweer enkele dagen continu, na jaááren van verstoffing. Het zal het lome zomerweer zijn, maar wat een fijnefijne plaat is dat toch.

Mooi, If You're Feeling Sinister is wat mij betreft met toch wel enige afstand hun beste album. Alle andere albums vind ik ongeveer gelijkwaardig en die zouden als ik een lijstje moet maken per dag kunnen wisselen. Hoewel, Write About Love zal wel altijd onderaan staan.quote:
