Dat meldde het Amerikaanse dagblad International Herald Tribune vrijdag. Haski ontliep de datacontrole van de Europese Unie door de mailtjes niet daadwerkelijk te verzenden maar slechts op te slaan, staat in het rapport van een Spaanse onderzoeksrechter.

Volgens de rechter had Haski vanaf 2003 tot de aanslagen in maart 2004 verschillende mailadressen aangemaakt met de gebruikersnaam ’Babanal2002’ en het wachtwoord Wahd11. Hoeveel handlangers precies het wachtwoord kenden, is niet duidelijk.

MADRID One of the leading figures indicted in the March 11, 2004, train bombings in Madrid used a simple trick that allowed him to communicate with his confederates on ordinary e- mail accounts but avoided government detection, according to the judge investigating the case.

Instead of sending the messages, the suspect, Hassan El Haski, saved them as drafts on accounts he shared with other radicals, according to papers issued by the judge, Juan del Olmo. They all knew the password and so they could access the accounts to read his comments and post replies, according to the judge.

This ruse meant that there was no digital trail that the authorities could easily trace, according to the judge and government. Had the messages been e- mailed, the government might have monitored them, as is common across Europe.

Intelligence officials have said in the past that terrorist groups were using the trick, which investigators call a "virtual dead drop." But few concrete examples have come to light, especially in an attack as extreme as the Madrid bombings, which killed 191 people.

Few details of this use of e-mail accounts were given in the lengthy indictment that named 29 suspects, mostly North African, this month. The government charges that these e-mail accounts were apparently used from as early as late 2003 until after the March bombings. But it does not detail how many people shared the accounts, and what kinds of instructions were given.

"This is probably a common method of communication among jihadists in Europe," Javier Jordán, the director of the Center for Security Studies and Analysis at the University of Granada, said in a telephone interview.

"Haski is a person who traveled a lot and had lots of contacts," he said. "If he used this method, a logical interpretation is that many others did too."

Haski, who once lived in Belgium, is portrayed in the indictment as one of the three main conspirators who helped the Madrid bombers carry out the attacks.

Haski's position within Islamic terrorist circles suggests that the method may be widely used, according to terrorism analysts, and his contacts with other suspects suggest it may have been crucial in helping the bombers prepare both their attacks and escapes.

In his indictment, the judge said that Haski had been a habitual user of the Internet who would communicate through e-mail accounts on Yahoo or Hotmail.

The indictment cites a man named Attila Turk, a native of Turkey who was arrested on terrorism charges in France in 2004. Turk was trying to flee from Europe after the Madrid bombings, and feared the police would arrest him. He asked Haski for help, he testified.

"Hassan had given me an address on the Internet the day that I left," Turk said. "I was to check the Internet address in question every day and to go to the draft menu to check for messages."

"The only way to get in touch with him was through the e-mail address Babana12002 with password Wahd11," the man said. "Hassan told me that the address worked in Yahoo or in Hotmail."

Spanish investigators contend that by saving the messages as drafts, the men did not leave the digital traces that are normally created when e-mail messages are sent.

But Jordán, of the University of Granada, said he was skeptical that intelligence services were as unable as they claimed to track unmailed messages. "There is still communication between the computer and the server," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if the intelligence services have a way of monitoring that."

Haski, a 42-year old Moroccan, was arrested in the Canary Islands nine months after the bombings.

His trial is to begin next spring, and the government has not yet presented a fully formed case against him.

An intelligence report submitted to the court before the indictments said he might have helped organize the plot; it cited interviews with some of his acquaintances who said he boasted of his involvement in the attacks and went into hiding around the time that they occurred.

"It can be deduced that Hassan El Haski knew that the Madrid attacks were going to occur, that he tried to hide, and that he himself stated that the perpetrators were his group," the report said.

According to Spanish investigators, Islamic terrorist groups are exploiting the Internet to advance their objectives, particularly since the loss of the Qaeda sanctuary in Afghanistan.

"Currently the virtual network of the Internet has in large measure taken the place of the channels of personal interconnections," del Olmo concludes near the end of his indictment.

Before his arrest, according to Spanish investigators, Haski was a top leader of a terrorist network described as having broad contacts in Europe and Morocco as well as numerous ties to the Madrid suspects.

The network, the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, is described in the indictment as the "supreme point of reference for the Salafi Jihadi Movement in our country." That refers to the followers of an extremist interpretation of Islam.

The indictment also says the group had sent "a large part of its militants to join the ranks or the insurgency in Iraq" and "constitutes the principal concern regarding the end of the conflict and the return of the volunteers to Europe and Morocco."
