1. Alexander Ovechkin - LW - Washington Capitals
Height: 6-2, Weight: 205
All eyes have been on this 20-year-old Russian rookie since the start of the season. Intense and able to score in every kind of way, he’s shown that he’s the most complete young player in the NHL, even while making the often difficult transition from Europe. Currently leading his rookie class in goals, points, shots, power-play and shorthanded goals, he is the favorite to win the Calder Trophy in what is considered the best crop of rookies coming into the league in years. Ovechkin will be a key element for Team Russia in their quest for the gold medal this Olympics. You cannot get more natural abilities from a hockey player than Washington’s charismatic first rounder in 2004. His size, superior sniping skills, and demonstrated ability to put a team on his back give him the slight edge over Sidney Crosby, though there is very little separating the two in terms of potential.



2. Sidney Crosby - C - Pittsburgh Penguins
Height: 5-11, Weight: 190
Hyped as the best player coming into the NHL since Eric Lindros, the 18-year-old center has not disappointed in his first pro season. Selected first overall in 2005, he currently leads the Penguins in scoring and is playing at more than a point-per-game pace. He has been surrounded with more talent than Ovechkin this year, but with the retirements of both Mario Lemieux and Zigmund Palffy, head coach Michel Therrien will rely heavily on his protégé to put more points on the board. Given an “A” as Therrien’s first move as a new coach, Crosby will be looked upon to lead, as he did with his Rimouski Oceanic to the Memorial Cup last season.



3. Dion Phaneuf - D - Calgary Flames
Height: 6-2, Weight: 205
Already known as a solid game-breaker for his devastating hits, Phaneuf has also become an offensive force in a Calgary system that is centered on defensive awareness. The young native of Edmonton has already scored 14 goals in 57 games in his first pro season and is a key to the success of the Flames power play. His shot is as hard as they come and he is a solid +4. He should develop into a Norris contender for years to come and likely will eventually win the trophy.



4. Evgeni Malkin - C - Pittsburgh Penguins
Height: 6-3, Weight: 185
This Penguins prospect decided to play another season with his Russian Super League team, Magnitogorsk Metallurg, and it proved to be a good decision. The 6’4, 190-pound center currently leads his team with 49 points in 43 games. He played in the last World Junior Championship in Vancouver, registering 10 points in six games while being named Best Forward of the tournament by the directorate. He is also representing his country in this year’s Olympics. Paired with Crosby, Pittsburgh should be set at center for some time.



5. Kari Lehtonen - G - Atlanta Thrashers
Height: 6-3, Weight: 200
Lehtonen suffered a serious injury on opening night, which kept him out for more than three months. It was a setback after a dominant lockout season with Chicago in the AHL where he won 38 games, posted a .929 save percentage and earned himself five shutouts. He’s now back at the top of his game and will be a franchise goaltender for Atlanta. The Finn demonstrates few holes at 6’3, but his frame doesn’t make him a slow goaltender. His quickness and flexibility show quite the opposite. He will need to stay healthy if the Thrashers are to make the playoffs this year.



6. Henrik Lundqvist - G - New York Rangers
Height: 5-11, Weight: 180
The 23-year-old netminder from Are, Sweden, has been exceptional through this first half of the season. The New York Rangers wouldn’t be at the top of the league without Lundqvist’s promising season. He leads the NHL in save percentage with .927 and is currently playing for Team Sweden in Torino, where he has been stellar. This seventh rounder from 2000 is proving why he was the best-kept secret in Sweden the past four years.



7. Thomas Vanek - LW - Buffalo Sabres
Height: 6-2, Weight: 207
The Buffalo Sabres have turned it around this season and it is in part because of the blossoming of their youngsters. In his first NHL season, Vanek is having success despite showing some signs of inconsistency. Vanek is a pure scorer, tallying 16 goals in 54 games under coach Lindy Ruff’s system. He might not enjoy as much success as Ovechkin and Crosby, but his potential is legitimate and should continue to develop at a good rate over the remainder of the season.



8. Jack Johnson - D - Carolina Hurricanes
Height: 6-1, Weight: 206
Johnson is the highest ranked US born player on Hockey’s Future’s Top 50 prospect list. A freshman at the University of Michigan, Johnson is known for his stickhandling and physical play. An offensive defenseman who can also take care of his own end, he was drafted third overall in last summer’s NHL entry draft. In 26 games this season, Johnson has registered 26 points (6 goals, 20 assists) and has a plus/minus rating of +7. Johnson was part of the 2006 US team at the U20 World Junior Championships. During the tournament, Johnson registered six points in seven games, and, although his physical play caused quite a bit of controversy, as the result of his efforts, Johnson was named to the WJC media All-Star team.



9. Jeff Carter - C - Philadelphia Flyers
Height: 6-3, Weight: 182
Carter, who moves up one spot since the last Top 50 list, is in his rookie year with the Philadelphia Flyers. Known to be a complete player, Carter has been producing offensively, garnering 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 55 games, while achieving a plus/minus rating of +5. He is fifth on the team in scoring and since Peter Forsberg’s injury, has been centering the Flyers first line. Although somewhat overshadowed by top rookie phenoms this year, Carter is having a solid freshman season and is expected to be a mainstay on one of the Flyers top two lines for years to come.



10. Ryan Suter - D - Nashville Predators
Height: 6-1, Weight: 188
Although he is a complete player with great talent, Suter’s adjustment to NHL play has not been as smooth as expected after a full year in the minors with Milwaukee. In 54 games with the Nashville Predators, Suter has registered 14 points (1 goal, 13 assists). He has had even more trouble lately, with no points since Jan. 23 and a –1 over that time period. But despite his current slowdown, he will likely develop into a solid player with a long career in the NHL.



11. Alexander Semin - LW - Washington Capitals
Height: 5-11, Weight: 175
Semin is an excellent skater and puckhandler, as well as a deadly shooter. Semin played 52 games with Washington during the 2003-04 campaign, registering 10 goals and 12 assists, but it is unclear whether he will play another game for the Capitals, who selected him 13th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Washington recently filed suit against Semin and his agent for breach of contract, due to Semin’s failure to report to the Capitals this season. According to Semin, he is serving in the Russian army, however, he has been playing all season for the Russian hockey teams Lada Togliatti and Mytishi Khimik. In 37 games in Russia, Semin has registered 16 points (8 goals, 8 assists). Regardless of the contract situation, Semin’s skill-set cannot be denied.



12. Cam Ward - G - Carolina Hurricanes
Height: 6-0, Weight: 175
Ward made the move from junior hockey to the NHL this year, with just one AHL season in between, a rarity for goaltenders. He had an outstanding junior career and was drafted 25th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Now with Carolina, Ward has won 11 of his 22 games. Ward has a 3.44 GAA and a save percentage of .887 serving as backup to Martin Gerber. If Ward, who has great lateral movement and a quick glove hand, continues to develop at this pace, he will be a staple between the pipes for the Hurricanes for many years to come.



13. Marek Svatos - RW - Colorado Avalanche
Height: 5-11, Weight: 175
Svatos emerges on the list at No. 13, due to his amazing speed and wonderful puckhandling skills. Svatos has used those skills to turn in a fantastic performance with the Avalanche in his rookie season this year. In 58 games, Svatos has registered 50 points (32 goals, 18 assists). He is currently third in scoring, behind only Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. The 30 goals Svatos has scored places him second among all NHL rookies (behind Ovechkin, who has scored 34). As evidence of his fine play, Svatos has been named to the Slovakian Olympic hockey team.



14. Zach Parise - C - New Jersey Devils
Height: 5-11, Weight: 185
The New Jersey Devils top prospect continues to move up the list after making his NHL debut this year. Parise is a top-notch playmaker who always gives 100 percent effort when he is on the ice. He has adjusted well to the new league, which clearly suits his size and playing style. In 57 games, he has 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists), but he has had some trouble defensively, and currently has a plus/minus rating of –10. If Parise develops his defensive game nearly as much as he has his offense, he will be the next great forward in a long line of New Jersey draftees starring in the NHL.



15. Ryan Getzlaf - C - Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Height: 6-3, Weight: 205
Getzlaf made his NHL debut with the Ducks this season and has been impressive so far. The big center has eight goals and six assists in 32 games. He also spent time with Portland of the AHL where he racked up an amazing 25 assists to go along with eight goals in 17 contests. He is more than proving that the AHL is little match for him. With the movement of some big name forwards off of the Anaheim roster in these past five months, the road may be clear for Getzlaf and fellow Anaheim prospect Corey Perry to emerge as young stars on the NHL roster.



16. Andrej Meszaros - D - Ottawa Senators
Height: 6-2, Weight: 187
This rookie defenseman is having an incredible NHL season. He’s played in all 56 of Ottawa’s games, scoring a respectable five goals and impressive 19 assists for 24 points, which ties him for fourth among rookie defensemen. His most outstanding feat by far is his +34 rating, which ties him for the league lead, rookie or otherwise. Ottawa continues to churn out top prospects from their farm system. Drafted late in the first round, Meszaros is making other prospects drafted well ahead of him look like early busts in comparison to this 20-year-old.



17. Alexander Steen - C - Toronto Maple Leafs
Height: 6-0, Weight: 190
After spending the last few seasons in the Swedish Elite League, Steen debuted with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005-06. He has been most impressive, scoring 13 goals, tied for 11th among rookies, and recording 18 assists for 31 points, tied for ninth among rookies. In most other years, Steen would be making headlines NHL-wide as a Calder Trophy hopeful if not for the bumper crop of rookies the lost season has produced. Toronto is fighting for a playoff spot, and it is the production of such rookies as Steen and Kyle Wellwood that has provided the scoring depth to keep them in the race.



18. Mike Richards - C - Philadelphia Flyers
Height: 5-11, Weight: 185
After signing a contract with Philadelphia after the completion of his junior career, and dominating the AHL playoffs in 2004-05, Richards has played in 55 games for the Flyers this season, scoring ten goals and 18 assists. The youngster has shown toughness as well, with 43 penalty minutes, including three fighting majors. But more telling are his team-leading three shorthanded goals, proving that he can be relied upon in any situation. While teammate Jeff Carter came into the NHL with all the fanfare, Richards has more than held his own.



19. Braydon Coburn - D - Atlanta Thrashers
Height: 6-5, Weight: 210
Coburn was expected to stick with the Thrashers this season, but finds himself back in the AHL, where he finished last season. He played nine games with the Thrashers in October before returning to the AHL. He has scored five goals and 15 assists in 44 contests with the Wolves. But scoring is not necessarily what you will think of when you hear Coburn’s name around NHL rinks. His assets are his size and skating. The big defenseman still has a lot of potential and is currently on the cusp of making the NHL roster permanently, as soon as he can get his defensive house in order.



20. Hannu Toivonen - G - Boston Bruins
Height: 6-2, Weight: 200
Toivonen has played in 20 games for the Bruins this season, going 9-5-4 with one shutout. His 2.63 goals-against average is fourth best among rookies, and his .914 save percentage is third best. His impressive play has shown the Boston organization that he might be the franchise goaltender of the future and make Andrew Raycroft expendable. The fact that Toivonen has been able to push a goaltender who posted a 2.05 goals-against average and .926 save percentage in his last NHL season is a testament to his capabilities.



21. Rob Schremp - C - Edmonton Oilers
Height: 6-0, Weight: 188
Schremp is having another great year with the London Knights of the OHL. In only 44 games, he has scored 43 goals, and recorded 73 assists for a robust 116 points. A vastly controversial figure, what cannot be denied is his pure hockey ability. A danger from anywhere on the ice, Schremp is an elite offensive prospect. But the defensive side has yet to come around. The question is whether Schremp can score enough to overcome other areas that are lacking. The Top 50 Prospects list is in the pursuit of future All-Stars and not sure-bet third liners, and Schremp is as boom or bust as they come.



22. Bobby Ryan - RW - Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Height: 6-1, Weight: 225
The second overall pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft had an impressive 37 goals and 52 assists in 62 games as a 17-year-old with the Owen Sound Attack. After 45 games in 2005-06, Ryan is ready to surpass his 2004-05 totals. Ryan is tied for seventh in OHL scoring with 87 points (29 goals and 58 assists). The New Jersey native was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team for the OHL All-Star Classic. The 6’1, 221-pound right winger is extremely gifted offensively, protects the puck well, and is strong along the boards, part of a trio of Anaheim power forward prospects.



23. Corey Perry - RW - Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Height: 6-2, Weight: 195
Perry joins Getzlaf and Ryan to form Anaheim’s future at forward. The 20-year-old right winger started the season in Anaheim with a four-game point scoring streak. His production trailed and then he suffered a concussion Oct. 28 against St. Louis. Reassigned to Portland upon his return, the OHL’s leading scorer in 2004-05 nearly equaled that pace in Portland. In 19 games Perry scored 16 goals and 18 assists. The Duck prospect was named AHL Co-Rookie of the Month along with Getzlaf for December after leading the AHL in scoring that month. Recalled by Anaheim Jan. 8, Perry has flown with the Ducks since and figures to be a future first liner in the NHL after dominating the AHL.



24. Petr Prucha - C - New York Rangers
Height: 5-10, Weight: 161
Nobody in the hockey world would have predicted that Czech right winger Petr Prucha would be battling with Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and Marek Svatos for the NHL lead in rookie goal scoring. But that was the case prior to Feb. 4, when the wiry speedster suffered a sprained MCL. Prucha, who has 25 goals and 9 assists in 49 games, was slated to represent the Czech Republic at the Olympics but is out three to four weeks and will miss the tournament. Few paid attention to it, but Prucha showed hints of his current form at the 2004 World Championships, and in last season\\\'s Czech Extraleague playoffs, in which his Pardubice team won the Extraleague championship.



25. Ryan Whitney - D - Pittsburgh Penguins
Height: 6-4, Weight: 205
Whitney began 2005-06 in Wilkes-Barre by destroying the AHL with five goals and nine assists in nine games from the back line. The struggling Pittsburgh Penguins recalled the soon to be 23-year-old after Dick Tarnstrom went down with a torn ACL. Averaging 23:19 of ice time per game, Whitney has 18 points in 47 games, 17 of them assists. The 6’4, 202-pound blueliner has proven himself as an excellent skater and puckmover, but he’s continuing to work on his defensive play and has been criticized by Penguins coach Michel Therrien for being soft. The fifth overall pick of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft has considerable upside due to his skating, size, and vision.



26. Brent Seabrook - D - Chicago Blackhawks
Height: 6-3, Weight: 220
Chicago Blackhawks 2003 first round draft pick Brent Seabrook cracked the NHL line-up in his rookie pro season. Part of a young Chicago defensive corps, the 20-year-old defenseman is a bright spot on the struggling team, leading in plus/minus at +7. Seabrook missed 13 games after suffering a sprained left knee Dec. 21, but the now reactivated youngster still leads all active Chicago defensemen in scoring with five goals and 15 assists in 44 games. Seabrook figures to become a Scott Hannan-like defenseman who is physical, very good defensively, capable of moving the puck, plays a lot of minutes and leads by example.



27. Niklas Kronwall - D - Detroit Red Wings
Height: 6-0, Weight: 180
Kronwall is back in action after missing the first 52 games of the season due to a Dan Hinote hip check that resulted in damage to his ACL and MCL. Coming back from the surgery Feb. 1 against St. Louis, Kronwall tallied two assists. The Swede had three assists in three games so far and appears to be back on track to becoming a top pairing defenseman for Detroit. Playing for Grand Rapids during the lockout, Kronwall led the AHL in defenseman scoring with 13 goals and 40 assists. Had it not been for the NHL lockout, the 25-year-old blueliner would have graduated from this list a year ago.



28. Patrick O'Sullivan - C - Minnesota Wild
Height: 5-11, Weight: 190
O\\\'Sullivan finished fifth in OHL scoring in 2004-05 with 31 goals and 59 assists, 40 more points than any of his Mississauga teammates. Minnesota\\\'s second round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft has had no trouble transitioning from major juniors to the AHL. His 28 goals and 27 assists after 50 games places him tied for seventh in the league in overall scoring, first among rookies. The Houston Aeros center was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for January after scoring nine goals and nine assists in 13 games. Twenty-one as of Feb. 1, O\\\'Sullivan is a strong contender for AHL Rookie of the Year. He\\\'s also a strong candidate to provide the Wild with some needed scoring in 2006-07.



29. Gilbert Brule - C - Columbus Blue Jackets
Height: 5-10, Weight: 180
The 18-year-old Brule cracked the Blue Jackets roster out of training camp, but the 5’10, 175-pound scrappy WHLer fractured his sternum in his second NHL game. After missing 13 games Brule came back and scored two goals and an assist in his first four games back, and then suffered a broken leg against Minnesota Nov. 30. He was reactivated Jan. 18 and sent back to the Vancouver Giants. The sixth overall pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Brule has nine goals and five assists in his first 13 games back in the WHL, where he finished third in league scoring in 2004-05. Despite a difficult 2005-06, Brule now has some experience for Columbus and should be back in the NHL next season.



30. Cam Barker - D - Chicago Blackhawks
Height: 6-3, Weight: 206
30. Cam Barker, D – Chicago Blackhawks Barker recently helped Team Canada win gold in the 2006 World Junior Championship, finishing second among defensemen for scoring with six points in six games. The powerful blueliner is a formidable presence in his own end, which, when combined with his offensive ability, could make him an outstanding top defenseman someday. Barker impressed in camp and had a brief one-game stint with the Blackhawks before he was returned to the Medicine Hat Tigers. He was ranked in the top ten for scoring defensemen in the WHL two consecutive years. Before Barker went down with an ankle injury near the end of January, he had accumulated 18 points and 63 penalty minutes in 25 games.



31. Andrew Ladd - LW - Carolina Hurricanes
Height: 6-2, Weight: 200
Ladd began his pro career with the Lowell Lock Monsters, playing in 16 games with a total of 12 points before he was promoted to the Carolina line-up in November. At 6’2 200 lbs, he has the size and strength and the high-energy style of play to become a top power forward. Ladd’s got a highly developed hockey sense and strong playmaking ability that make him valuable in both ends of the ice. He was chosen fourth overall in the 2004 Entry Draft. Ladd totaled eight points in his 17 games with the high-flying Hurricanes.



32. Rostislav Olesz - C - Florida Panthers
Height: 6-2, Weight: 205
At only 20 years of age, Olesz is known for his maturity and work ethic, while his defensive awareness makes him a valuable asset on the penalty kill. He is strong, agile, and a decent skater, and while he could stand to take more shots at the net, he is a player with very few weaknesses to his game. The young forward has been with the Panthers since the beginning of the 2005-06 season, logging a lot of minutes and has posted 12 points in 36 games.



33. Jussi Jokinen - C - Dallas Stars
Height: 5-11, Weight: 185
Jokinen cracked the Dallas lineup out of camp and quickly made an offensive impact for the team. A skilled forward with excellent hockey sense, Jokinen is versatile and quick on his skates. The Dallas rookie only missed one game, and has compiled 36 points (11 goals, 25 assists) in 57 games. He has averaged a little over 13 minutes per game while on the top line and is sixth on the team in scoring. He is best known, however, for his shootout prowess.



34. Alex Perezhogin - RW - Montreal Canadiens
Height: 6-0, Weight: 185
This quick, goal-scoring winger is considered one of Montreal’s top prospects. Originally drafted in the first round of the 2001 Entry Draft (25th overall), Perezhogin played numerous seasons for Omsk Avangard in Russia, as well as 2003-04 with Hamilton (AHL). He made his NHL debut on Oct. 6 against the Rangers, scoring his first career NHL goal and averaging about a point a game in the next six games. His game cooled down and after scoring only a goal and an assist in the month of December, he was reassigned to Hamilton. Perezhogin compiled two assists and eight penalty minutes in 11 games with Hamilton before he was once again recalled to Montreal at the end of January.



35. Eric Fehr - RW - Washington Capitals
Height: 6-3, Weight: 190
Fehr has made a successful transition from juniors to pro in the 2005-06 season, beginning with the Hershey Bears (AHL), a performance that earned him a second recall to Washington. The first round draft pick from 2003 has scored 46 points in his 51 games with the Bears, and compiled a total of 49 penalty minutes. With natural scoring ability and a powerful shot, Fehr has the potential to be a top line power forward for the Caps, adding to an already impressive forward crop for Washington which includes Ovechkin and Semin.



36. Marc Staal - D - New York Rangers
Height: 6-4, Weight: 196
After being selected in the first round of the 2005 draft, defenseman Marc Staal has seen a steady rise in his stock. Currently enjoying his best year to date with Sudbury of the OHL en route to be named to the All-Star team, this steady defenseman combines size with mobility to create a menacing force on the blue line. With the recent graduation of Fedor Tyutin to the Rangers, Staal is the next in line among defensemen coming down the pipeline for the recently resurgent Ranger system. Staal displayed his tremendous skills at the 2006 U-20 WJC where he was named the best defenseman in the tournament.



37. Ray Emery - G - Ottawa Senators
Height: 6-2, Weight: 203
In his last year of eligibility as a prospect, Emery reappears on the Top 50 list at No. 37. Emery is already paying dividends for the Senators as the backup and heir apparent to Dominik Hasek on the NHL roster. Emery started the 2005-06 season going 6-0-0 with a 2.23 goals-against average and a save percentage of .923 but has cooled off to 9-4-1 and a .888. Emery may not steal a game with catlike reflexes or acrobatic saves as Hasek has, but his solid and smart play will bring consistency between the pipes nevertheless.



38. Al Montoya - G - New York Rangers
Height: 6-2, Weight: 193
Montoya is enjoying a great rookie season in the AHL for the Hartford Wolf Pack. After leaving the University of Michigan early to sign a contract with the Rangers, he has assumed the regular starting duties with Hartford, going 17-5-1 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. With one Ranger goaltender in the Top 10 of this list already starting in New York, there might not be much room for Montoya moving up the ladder of the Rangers system. But for now, the Rangers have the best one-two prospect punch in net of all NHL organizations.



39. Milan Michalek - LW - San Jose Sharks
Height: 6-2, Weight: 220
Although Michalek has found a regular shift on the San Jose Sharks, his luster as a top prospect is beginning to fade as he continues his fall down the charts. Michalek is still young and developing, but the level of progress he ultimately will achieve has come into question. Twenty-three points in 55 NHL games is respectable for a 21-year-old rookie, but of the first nine picks in the very deep 2003 draft, Michalek arguably has the least amount of available top-end potential. Regardless, this two-way forward is still a valuable commodity to any organization.



40. Lauri Tukonen - RW - Los Angeles Kings
Height: 6-2, Weight: 198
Similar to Michalek one spot ahead, Tukonen is a two-way forward in the making. Already possessing physical defensive abilities, Tukonen is working on his offensive game and being more consistent with the body. Nearly making the Los Angeles Kings out of training camp, Tukonen was assigned to the Manchester Monarchs and has developed into a legitimate top-six forward at the AHL level. Twenty-four points in his first 37 professional games is a good start, especially for a 19-year-old rookie. But Tukonen must still learn to score with regularity and bring consistency to his defensive game before he becomes the next in a growing list of forward prospects homegrown by the Kings.



41. Wojtek Wolski - LW - Colorado Avalanche
Height: 6-3, Weight: 188
Beginning the season on the Colorado Avalanche roster, Wolski scored six points in his first nine games, including a three-point performance against Calgary, before being sent back to the OHL for further development. Despite having to spend another year in the juniors, Wolski has already proven more at the NHL level than nearly every other player in major juniors. Wolski would carry this momentum to his familiar home in Brampton. His 79 points in the first 41 games of the year is enough for ninth in the OHL. He was recently named the OHL Player of the Month for January. Next season, or even possibly later in this season, Avalanche fans may see the great young pair of Svatos and Wolski together again in Colorado.



42. Robert Nilsson - LW - New York Islanders
Height: 5-11, Weight: 181
Floundering a bit in Sweden, Robert Nilsson took the perfect opportunity to cross the pond and find renewed playing time in North America. Making the Islanders straight out of training camp, Nilsson spent his first 25 professional games in the NHL before spending a short stay in Bridgeport of the AHL. After scoring 22 points in 23 games for Bridgeport, Nilsson would soon find himself back up with the NHL club, perhaps this time to stay. He has six points in 27 games with the Islanders.



43. Anze Kopitar - C - Los Angeles Kings
Height: 6-4, Weight: 220
The Kings have quite a few talented young forwards in the organization, but none have the complete package that Kopitar possesses. He impressed the Kings so much during training camp this past fall that they attempted to get him to turn pro and play in North America for the 2005-06 season. Kopitar resisted the offer and returned to Sweden to play in the SEL for Sodjertale and so far, the 18-year-old Slovenian has more than held his own. Kopitar has registered seven goals and nine assists through 41 SEL games as one of the youngest players in the entire league. Kopitar may not be the best skater, but his size/skill package is so advanced for a player of his age that he could be playing hockey in Los Angeles next season.



44. Petteri Nokelainen - C - New York Islanders
Height: 6-1, Weight: 190
Nokelainen, the Islanders top pick in the 2004 NHL Draft made the opening night roster with a strong training camp and preseason and was taking a regular shift on the fourth line until he sustained a knee injury in the early part of November. He still remains out of action with patella tendonitis and has missed 39 games due to the injury. In the 12 games he suited up for, he scored a goal and an assist. Nokelainen is mostly known for his defensive prowess, but he showed the ability in Finland last season to contribute offensively as well. While not as spectacular as some other prospects on this list, Nokelainen’s stellar two-way game is something that cannot be overlooked as a future Selke Trophy hopeful.



45. Brad Boyes - C - Boston Bruins
Height: 6-1, Weight: 195
After finishing 11th overall in AHL scoring in 2004-05, this former Leafs and Sharks farmhand has finally found a home in Boston. Boyes is quietly putting together a strong rookie season with the Bruins and sits fourth in rookie scoring behind Ovechkin, Crosby and Svatos. Boyes has suited up for every Boston game to this point, and currently sits third in team scoring with 16 goals and 28 assists in 58 games. His +10 rating leads the team. Boyes’ offensive skills and uncanny hockey sense have made his adjustment to the NHL an easy one and it looks like he is going to be a top line playmaker and offensive stalwart with the Bruins for years to come.



46. Alexander Radulov - RW - Nashville Predators
Height: 6-1, Weight: 183
The supremely talented Radulov had a great North American debut in the QMJHL with the Quebec Remparts and this season has elevated his game even more. Radulov has easily surpassed his 75-point total of last season and currently sits one point away from the QMJHL scoring lead with 105 points in only 46 games. Included in that total are 38 goals (15 of which have come on the power play) and a gaudy +36 rating. Radulov also played in the WJC for Team Russia and helped lead them to a silver medal showing. Even more recently, Radulov signed an entry-level contract with the Predators. Offensively, there is not much that Radulov cannot do and his energy level and commitment to improving his all around game is impressive.



47. Carey Price - G - Montreal Canadiens
Height: 6-2, Weight: 175
After being drafted fifth overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Price returned to Tri-City of the WHL for the 2005-06 season and was being looked at as a prime candidate to be the No. 1 goaltender for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Though Price did not make the team, he has still done nothing to dispel the notion as the future No. 1 goaltender in Montreal. Price had a good training camp and preseason with the Canadiens and possesses all the tools to become a top-notch netminder. His numbers with Tri-City are not great by any stretch, but on a struggling Americans team, he has often been left out to dry. Price has won 16 games, posted a 2.88 GAA and .907 save percentage to go along with three shutouts through 42 games.



48. Luc Bourdon - D - Vancouver Canucks
Height: 6-2, Weight: 205
Bourdon has lived up to the billing as the 10th overall selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and the Canucks are more than pleased with how he has progressed up to this point. Bourdon did not look out of place in a few preseason matches with Vancouver and nearly made the Canucks opening night roster, one of the last cuts. The multi-talented blueliner played a key role in leading Canada to a gold medal at the WJC and now he hopes to help lead his new QMJHL team, the Moncton Wildcats, to a Memorial Cup. Bourdon has three goals and 25 assists for 28 points in 30 games so far this season and he continues to display the traits the Canucks hope will be on display for them on their backline in the very near future.



49. Roman Voloshenko - LW - Minnesota Wild
Height: 6-0, Weight: 187
Voloshenko has made as smooth a transition to North American hockey as the Wild had hoped. Despite being one of the league’s youngest players at the age of 19, Voloshenko has unleashed his offensive talents on AHL goalies this season with 24 goals, second best for AHL rookies behind fellow Wild prospect O’Sullivan’s 28. There is no doubting the offensive gifts this Belarusian has and the Wild hope over the next season or two he can learn to play a complete game, something of a necessity if you want to play a regular shift for the defensively oriented team. Voloshenko again participated in the WJC for team Russia in Vancouver where he put on display his dizzying array of puckhandling skills and big league shot and helped the team to a silver medal.



50. Shea Weber - D - Nashville Predators
Height: 6-3, Weight: 208
After Weber’s coming out party at last year’s WJC, the Predators expected big things from the rugged and offensively gifted rearguard in his first pro season and so far he has not disappointed. With the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, Weber has displayed an all around game. Weber leads all rookie defensemen in the AHL with 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points and even earned a brief three-game look with the Predators at the midway point of the NHL season where he looked very poised and comfortable. The Predators have a wealth of strong prospects on the blue line, but Weber is hands down the best of the bunch not named Suter.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins
Strengths: The Penguins hit the prospect jackpot with the first overall pick in the 2005 draft, and added Sidney Crosby to an already stellar collection of players. Also at the top of the list is potential No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and potential No. 1 center, Russian phenom Evgeni Malkin, with Ryan Whitney and Noah Welch still representing the best of the blue line. Center Maxime Talbot and winger Michel Ouellet bring scoring potential, while 2005 draftee Kristopher Letang brings potential as an offensive defenseman. Pittsburgh can credit excellent scouting and a little draft day luck for creating one of the deepest, most diverse groups of talent in the League.
Weaknesses: The Pens may have talent across the board, but their weakest area is at left wing, where only a fraction of the players reside. They also lack an elite level offensive defenseman, and a top-line scorer on right wing.
Top Prospects: Sidney Crosby (C), Evgeni Malkin (C), Marc-Andre Fleury (G), Ryan Whitney (D), Noah Welch (D)


2. Washington Capitals
Strengths: The Capitals boast both quality and quantity in their prospect pool, starting with Alexander Ovechkin, who is making a strong debut with the club. Beyond Ovechkin, the Capitals have several other forwards who have great potential for the NHL. Alexander Semin is a very skilled offensive winger, while 2003 first round draft choice Eric Fehr could become a terrific sniper. Many in the Capitals Top 20 are now on the NHL roster, including defensemen Steve Eminger and Shaone Morrisonn.
Weaknesses: Goaltending is the weakest area for the Capitals, with Maxime Daigneault heading the list of three unremarkable goalies. It’s an area that will need to be addressed in the coming draft.
Top Prospects: Alexander Ovechkin (LW), Alexander Semin (LW), Eric Fehr (RW), Steve Eminger (D), Shaone Morrisonn (D)


3. Chicago Blackhawks
Strengths: Defense is the predominant strength of the Blackhawks organization. Their prospect list is led by two potential powerplay quarterbacks in Cam Barker and Brent Seabrook. Behind those two, there are players like Anton Babchuk and Michal Barinka who provide plenty of depth. Up front, 2005 draft pick, Jack Skille headlines a decent group of forwards. Pavel Vorobiev and Rene Bourque have both started strong for the Blackhawks in their rookie year. Between the pipes, Corey Crawford could be another starting goaltender with Quebec League heritage.
Weaknesses: Chicago’s forward corps is simply not that impressive, especially when compared to their strength on the blue line. The emergence of Pavel Vorobiev, once thought to be a lost cause, has helped in this regard. A few more prospects in goal would help as well, after a recent housecleaning.

4. Los Angeles Kings
Strengths: The Kings impressive collection of young forwards got even better on draft day when Slovenian sensation Anze Kopitar fell to them at the 11th overall pick. He joined a forward corps that already includes Dustin Brown, Michael Cammalleri, Lauri Tukonen, Jeff Tambellini, Brian Boyle and Konstantin Pushkarev. Tim Gleason, Denis Grebeshkov, Richard Petiot, and Paul Baier are all blue chip defensive prospects, with others like TJ Fast and Patrik Hersley who are full of potential. For the first time in the history of the franchise, the Kings goaltending pipeline is showing promise. Betting on quantity, the Kings have ended up with several solid but unspectacular prospects. Recent draftee Jonathon Quick has the highest potential of the group, but Yutaka Fukufuji, Daniel Taylor and Matt Zaba are starting to make a name for themselves.
Weaknesses: The wave is cresting and several of the Kings elite prospects are going to graduate into regular NHL players. Although the goaltending situation is light years ahead of where it was a few years ago, it is still the weak point of the prospect pool.

5. Nashville Predators
Strengths: The Predators have an impressive number of top-notch defense prospects with Ryan Suter, Shea Weber, Ryan Parent and Kevin Klein. Suter and Weber both could evolve into top defensive pairing players who with game-changing skills. Suter is an outstanding all-around defenseman while Weber’s brute physicality puts him in the same mold of Adam Foote. Offensively the Predators possess a potential star in Alex Radulov, and beyond that have a pair of inconsistent wingers who might become second line offensive threats with Konstantin Glazachev and Timofei Shishkanov. Scottie Upshall brings an element of grit to the organization’s depth chart up front as well.
Weaknesses: The only gaping whole in the Predators’ prospect pool is at the goaltending position, where Teemu Lassila leads the back, but is yet to appear in a game in North America. The Predators lack the depth in their offensive prospects that would merit confidence that their existing pool can be absolutely counted on to produce more than one or two NHL players. The team’s group of forwards, save Upshall, also tends to be fairly soft, although this may be less of a problem if the new-look NHL proves to be friendlier to small, fast, and skilled players.

6. Montreal Canadiens
Strengths: With talents such as Alex Perezhogin, Chris Higgins and Tomas Plekanec starting their NHL careers in 2005-06, the Canadiens have several gifted forwards. Combined with the explosive Andrei Kostsitsyn and junior-aged stars Kyle Chipchura and Guillaume Latendresse, the club’s future is more than set up front. Latendresse made waves in training camp, nearly forcing his way onto the opening night roster as an 18-year-old. The club’s situation in goal is almost as impressive as their group of forwards. Heading into the 2005 draft already having Yann Danis among others, they selected the highly-sought after Carey Price fifth overall.
Weaknesses: While the club is very strong up front and in between the pipes, the defense is almost as weak. Even the disappointing Ron Hainsey has now graduated, leaving Ryan O’Byrne as the best the Canadiens have to offer.
Top Prospects: Alex Perezhogin (RW), Andrei Kostsitsyn (RW), Carey Price (G), Chris Higgins (LW), Yann Danis (G)


7. New York Rangers
Strengths: The Rangers youth movement has paid off tremendously. With the season so young, seven of their prospects have already appeared in at least one NHL game this year. In the case of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, his contribution has been nothing short of spectacular. The Rangers also have former Team USA hero Al Montoya in their goaltending pipeline. Their defensive corps is extremely solid, especially after the additions of 2005 draft picks like Marc Staal and Michael Sauer. Up front, there’s plenty of depth.
Weaknesses: Despite all of New York’s depth, they could use a little bit more of it between the pipes. This is a case of quality, but not as much quantity. Meanwhile, there are a number of question marks in their forward corps. However, given the depth there, they can afford some players to miss.
Top Prospects: Fedor Tyutin (D), Henrik Lundqvist (G), Al Montoya (G), Marc Staal (D), Jarkko Immonen (C)


8. Columbus Blue Jackets
Strengths: The Blue Jackets have an impressively deep and diverse group of forwards in their system. Starting with future superstar sniper Nik Zherdev, the young organization has another future star in Gilbert Brule, a small but feisty center who they selected with the sixth overall pick in 2005. QMJHLer Alexandre Picard brings a gritty, all-out style of play to the organization. Despite being criticized as possessing little offensive upside, the gutsy winger scored 40 goals in the Q last season. American Adam Pineault is a developing power forward with a NHL-quality shot and Joakim Lindstrom is a small and shifty winger. The Jackets also have strong depth among their defense prospects.
Weaknesses: Despite having good depth for the future on the blue line, the team does not have a player who is projected to step into a top pairing role in the NHL at any point. Between the pipes, beyond Pascal Leclaire, the Jackets do not have any goalie prospects with strong potential or likelihood of making it to the NHL.

9. Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Strengths: Anaheim is strong up front with quality and quantity. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry benefited from the lockout and stepped right into the Ducks lineup. 2005 draft pick Bobby Ryan is picking up where Perry left off in offensive production in the OHL. Meanwhile the blue line features plenty of depth starting with Ladislav Smid and Brendan Mikkelson leading the way.
Weaknesses: Despite adding two goaltenders to the pipeline this summer, between the pipes is still a source of concern for the Ducks. Also a top defensive prospect would be a welcome addition on the blue line.
Top Prospects: Bobby Ryan (RW), Ryan Getzlaf (C), Ladislav Smid (D), Corey Perry (RW), Brendan Mikkelson (D)


10. Minnesota Wild
Strengths: The Wild remain strong down the middle with centers Patrick O’Sullivan and Mikko Koivu leading the pack. Both youngsters will play a major role in Minnesota’s future plans as they develop their skill set. Fortune also appeared to be smiling upon the Wild when the 2005 NHL draft lottery saw them land highly coveted left winger Benoit Pouliot with the fourth overall pick. A glaring weakness of their prospect system in previous years, Pouliot will provide top notch offensive support from the wing and should mature into a top line forward.
Weaknesses: AAfter Josh Harding, the Wild are notably thin in goaltending depth. While they hope that Anton Khudobin and Kristofer Westblom can progress into NHL-caliber net minders, the jury is still out on their potential.

11. Philadelphia Flyers
Strengths: A very impressive group of young forwards pave the way for the Flyers. Jeff Carter, Patrick Sharp and Mike Richards are playing on the top lines in the NHL. R.J. Umberger, Ryan Potulny, Stefan Ruzicka, Ben Eager, and Steve Downie are still down on the farm. The Flyers have shown a knack for picking young talented forwards that few other teams can match.
Weaknesses: Graduations and trades have really hurt the Flyers prospect depth on the blue line. Alexandre Picard is no slouch, but there isn’t much beyond him. In net, Rejean Beauchemin and Martin Houle are full of potential but at this point are unproven and it is very shallow behind them.
Top Prospects: Jeff Carter (C), Mike Richards (C), Patrick Sharp (C), R.J. Umberger (C), Stefan Ruzicka (RW)


12. Buffalo Sabres
Strengths: Without a doubt, the Sabres have a very strong group of forwards. Thomas Vanek, coming off a sensational AHL rookie campaign, has a high upside as a goal scorer. The club’s first round pick from 2005, Marek Zagrapan, also possesses outstanding offensive talent, although his specialty is playmaking. Derek Roy, Daniel Paille and Drew Stafford all have great character and varying offensive skill sets. The Sabres also have several good projects with size such as Mark Mancari and Dylan Hunter.
Weaknesses: The organization has very little both on defense and in goal. Michael Funk is the top blue line prospect, and the 18th ranked Michal Valent is the top netminder in the organization. There is a justification for the lack of goaltending prospects however, that being the logjam in the NHL at the moment.
Top Prospects: Thomas Vanek (LW), Marek Zagrapan (C), Derek Roy (C), Daniel Paille (LW), Drew Stafford (RW)


13. Edmonton Oilers
Strengths: The Oilers boast a well-rounded attack down the middle, adding center Andrew Cogliano to an already solid center group that includes Rob Schremp and Marc-Antoine Pouliot. While Schremp was sent back to juniors after a good showing at Oilers training camp/preseason, he has been electric with the London Knights, picking up where he left off last season. Between Devan Dubnyk and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, Edmonton has two potential NHL starters.
Weaknesses: While they have decent defensive-defensemen depth, Edmonton is sorely lacking any true offensive skill from the rear-guard, particularly in the form of a power play specialist or puck moving breakout catalyst. Also, they lack any front-line scoring ability from the wings.
Top Prospects: Rob Schremp (C), Marc-Antoine Pouliot (C), Devan Dubnyk (G), Andrew Cogliano (C), Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (G)


14. San Jose Sharks
Strengths: San Jose’s main strength is depth, and they have a lot of it. The Sharks often make picks that other teams consider off the board or too early, but San Jose is one of the best organizations in developing prospects into productive NHL players. Milan Michalek, Marcel Goc, and Christian Erhoff made the team out of camp this year. Doug Murray, Lukas Kasper and Steve Bernier are knocking at the door. San Jose’s farm system is a factory for future NHL players, leading in number of drafted and homegrown players in the league.
Weaknesses: Although deep, San Jose system lacks blue chip game breaking prospects and could be a little deeper on the wings. Size is an issue, but how much on an issue that will be in the new NHL is yet to be seen.
Top Prospects: Milan Michalek (LW), Christian Erhoff (D), Marcel Goc (C), Matt Carle (D), Steve Bernier (RW)


15. Atlanta Thrashers
Strengths: The strengths of the Thrashers prospect pool lie in goaltending and defense. Kari Lehtonen and Ondrej Pavelec are both starter-caliber, and Braydon Coburn leads a strong group of defensive prospects -- six of the top 10 prospects play at this position. Boris Valabik, Nathan Oystrick and Chad Denny fill a more stay at home role, while Mark Popovic, Grant Lewis and Jim Sharrow are more offensive. Having four picks in the first two rounds of the 2005 draft helped restock the cupboard in all areas.
Weaknesses: There’s not much high-end offensive talent in the pool, with the exception of 2005 pick Alex Bourret. 2005 picks Andrew Kozek and Jordan LaVallee might turn out, but they are not sure bets.
Top Prospects: Kari Lehtonen (G), Braydon Coburn (D), Alex Bourret (C), Ondrej Pavelec (G), Mark Popovic (D)


16. Ottawa Senators
Strengths: With consistently impressive scouting, the Senators have good overall depth and array of different talents. Up front, Antoine Vermette, Brandon Bochenski and Patrick Eaves are all talented and on the verge of graduating, while Russian Super League superstar Alexei Kaigorodov remains overseas. The blue line was bolstered at the 2005 draft with the ninth overall selection, Brian Lee. He joins stud 2004 pick Andrej Meszaros as well as Kiril Lyamin and Christoph Schubert on a backend with skill and size. Although he struggled in 2004-05, Ray Emery remains the goalie of the future, with Billy Thompson and 2005 CHL Goalie of the Year Jeff Glass behind him.
Weaknesses: Although this is a well-rounded group, the club does not have a truly elite, cornerstone prospect. This is particularly evident up front, where players like Vermette and Eaves may top out as great complimentary players. With several rookies in the Ottawa lineup this season, this group may look weak in a year’s time.
Top Prospects: Antoine Vermette (C), Ray Emery (G), Andrej Meszaros (D), Patrick Eaves (RW), Brian Lee (D)


17. Florida Panthers
Strengths: The Panthers are very strong up front, with their top four prospects all at forward. Three are sizeable forwards who are more than willing to play an aggressive, physical, style of play. Nathan Horton, Kenndal McArdle and Anthony Stewart all clearly fit the mold of a power forward, while Rostislav Olesz is more of a slick playmaker. The team also has a number of very large defensemen in the system. In general, the Panthers possess tremendous size in their young prospects.
Weaknesses: Overall depth is a problem in the system. The top defensive prospect is Lukas Krajicek but there is not much behind him. Tyler Plante was picked up in 2005 to address the absence of a top goaltending prospect.

18. New Jersey Devils
Strengths: New Jersey still holds most of their depth at center, with players like Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, and Petr Vrana at the top. They have some solid players on wing, with Tuomas Pihlman and Barry Tallackson the strongest on left wing. On the right, Russian Aleksander Suglobov has put up respectable numbers with the Albany River Rats, and newly drafted Swede Niklas Bergfors shows tremendous promise as the goal-scoring prospect that New Jersey needs. The Devils also found a strong goaltending prospect in the 2005 draft with 18-year-old Jeff Frazee, who has potential as a starter.
Weaknesses: New Jersey has done very little to improve their pool of defensive prospects, and beyond Matt DeMarchi, Mark Fraser and Tyler Eckford, there isn’t much potential. Of concern among the forward prospects, the Devils still have very few potential high scorers, and they have questionable depth on left wing. Overall, New Jersey has very few impact players at any position, and a severe drop in talent behind their top prospects.
Top Prospects: Zach Parise (C), Aleksander Suglobov (RW), Travis Zajac (C), Niklas Bergfors (RW), Petr Vrana (C)


19. Boston Bruins
Strengths: The Bruins are still strongest between the pipes and on defense, and they continue to demonstrate a strong scouting system with several surprising mid to late round picks such as Andrew Alberts and Milan Jurcina. Top prospect Hannu Toivonen has made his NHL debut, and behind him, the goaltending depth is solid. On the blue line, Mark Stuart will continue his development in Providence, and top 2005 draft pick Matt Lashoff has a promising future as an offensive defenseman. Brad Boyes and Colton Orr have both made the roster in Boston.
Weaknesses: The Bruins still lack a clear top-line scorer, and they have many offensive prospects that are questionable to make an impact in the NHL at all. They are weakest at left wing, with Martin Samuelsson at the top of the list and on the verge of becoming an NHL bust. The promotion of players like Jurcina and Alberts to the NHL, along with the imminent departure of such prospects as Lars Jonsson from the B’s system, will leave a few holes on defense.

20. Calgary Flames
Strengths: Two words, Dion Phaneuf. This imposing youngster has the Flames staff delighted as he has very much lived up to his billing early on with the main club. At press time, Phaneuf was leading the Flames in shots and third on the team in average ice time, while being featured on the first power play unit. Beyond Phaneuf, the Flames used the 2005 draft to bolster their defensive depth, adding first rounder Matt Pelech, and defensive specialist Gord Baldwin. The Flames also have decent depth in checking line forwards, led by Eric Nystrom.
Weaknesses: Obviously a lack of top-end scoring talent is noticeable on the Flames prospect list. They did little to address this in the recent NHL entry draft and must examine this deficiency to build a more complete prospect group. 21. Dallas Stars
Strengths: It’s not often an NHL team’s top three prospects are defensemen, but it is so with Dallas. Trevor Daley, Shawn Belle, and Matt Niskanen are three prospects any organization would love to have on their blue line. With the Stars’ commitment to two-way play, it’s no shock that they possess several very good two-way forwards. The Stars also possess pretty impressive depth, though not necessarily quality, in goal.
Weaknesses: The Stars forward corps lacks depth and they lack any game-breaking offensive threats. Beyond Daley, their defensemen are strictly defensive types so they could use more puck movement from their backend.
Top Prospects: Trevor Daley (D), Shawn Belle (D), Matt Niskanen (D), Jussi Jokinen (C), Loui Eriksson (RW)


22. Carolina Hurricanes
Strengths: Over recent years the Hurricanes have stockpiled goaltending prospects. Their top prospect is Cam Ward, who had the fourth-best goals against average in the AHL last season as a rookie and opened eyes with his strong play early in his NHL rookie season. Right behind him is Kevin Nastiuk, currently with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Six netminders in the pool makes Carolina the most goalie-rich in the league in terms of quantity. Beyond goaltending, 2004 pick Andrew Ladd is considered a top quality forward prospect the ‘Canes can add to their rebuilding front lines and Jack Johnson is a very solid blueliner.
Weaknesses: The Hurricanes severely lack depth in all positions. The situation is especially dire on the wings up front. But stocking and developing a farm system is low priority for the team at this juncture; they are currently sharing an AHL affiliation with Colorado in Lowell.

23. Detroit Red Wings
Strengths: Igor Grigorenko re-established himself as a viable prospect after a terrible car accident put his future in question. He’s joined up front on the Red Wings list by Jiri Hudler and Johan Franzen. The latter has stepped directly into the Red Wings lineup and has contributed as a character forward. Meanwhile, Niklas Kronwall is expected to be a stud on defense and Jimmy Howard has the potential to be a starting goaltender. The Red Wings have done well considering they often are drafting from a very low position and have been known to sacrifice picks in order to add to their current lineup.
Weaknesses: Kronwall needs to stay healthy. After missing large parts of the 2003-04 season with a broken leg, he currently isn’t expected back until February thanks to knee troubles. Behind him on the blue line, there’s very little, although drafting Jakub Kindl did help. Obviously, more high caliber prospects would help a lot, although the same could be said for most organizations.
Top Prospects: Niklas Kronwall (D), Igor Grigorenko (RW), James Howard (G), Jiri Hudler (C), Valtteri Filppula (C)


24. Vancouver Canucks
Strengths: The Canucks boast one of the most impressive groups of goaltending prospects among all NHL franchises. In 2004 the team selected Cory Schneider in the first round, and the young American had an outstanding freshman season in the NCAA ranks. They also used a later pick to take Julien Ellis, a QMJHL goaltender who fell several rounds on draft day, but was the most dominant goalie in the Q last season. In the recent NHL Entry Draft, the team picked up another Q goalie in Alexandre Vincent. All three possess the potential to develop into NHL starting goaltenders. The team also has a respectable group of defensemen who can contribute on the score sheet with former NCAA standout Brett Skinner, enigmatic Russian defenseman Kiril Koltsov, AHLer Tomas Mojzis, and 2005 first round pick Luc Bourdon.
Weaknesses: The Canucks forward group is extremely weak. They do not have a single prospect in the system who can be relied on to develop into a consistent goal scorer at the NHL level. Winger Jason King has been mired with concussion problems since the end of last season and no return date is set. Recently acquired Jozef Balej has scoring potential, but has yet to put it all together in the pro ranks and is slightly undersized. The team desperately needs a prolific goal-scoring prospect to add some offensive punch to the system.
Top Prospects: Ryan Kesler (C), Luc Bourdon (D), Cory Schneider (G), Jason King (RW), Kevin Bieksa (D)


25. Phoenix Coyotes
Strengths: While goaltender David LeNeveu is their top prospect, the real story is on the blue line. Keith Ballard and Zybnek Michalek are both playing for the Coyotes in the NHL. Meanwhile, Matthew Spiller has half a year of NHL experience and could soon be challenging to return. Up front, Fredrik Sjostrom has just graduated, but Enver Lisin, Martin Hanzal and Blake Wheeler all provide plenty of depth and potential. There are a lot of gritty players throughout the organization.
Weaknesses: There are still plenty of question marks all over the roster and a definite lack of top-end talent up front. The majority of Phoenix’s prospects appear to be of the boom or bust flavor. Drafting Pier-Olivier Pelletier has helped with goaltending depth, but a few more bodies would help.

26. Colorado Avalanche
Strengths: With the development of Wojtek Wolski, Marek Svatos, and Brad Richardson, combined with a very strong 2005 draft class featuring Ryan Stoa, Paul Stastny, Chris Durand, Tom Fritsche, and T.J. Hensick, the Avs have suddenly re-established their forward pool with an array of top-six talent. Wolski and Svatos are the most NHL-ready of the bunch, and have been impressive early in the 2005-06 NHL season. Between the pipes, Peter Budaj has established himself as the backup net minder in Denver.
Weaknesses: From a defensive standpoint, the Avalanche are clearly in the bottom echelon for NHL prospects. They lack any true top-pair talents, with Johnny Boychuk as the only legitimate prospect with a realistic shot at making the Avs in the near future. Additional depth on the wing and between the pipes would be beneficial as well.

27. New York Islanders
Strengths: The strongest position for the Islanders is at center, a position that was solidified by the drafting of promising young OHL standout Ryan O’Marra. Also at center, top ranking prospect Petteri Nokelainen looks to make an impact with the big club this season, and after an impressive camp, Sean Bergenheim will continue play in Bridgeport. Robert Nilsson and Jeremy Colliton also continue to play well, and head a solid, but not impressive group of wingers. On defense, the Islanders have a few solid prospects, with Chris Campoli, Bruno Gervais and Dustin Kohn heading that list.
Weaknesses: The biggest deficiency in the Isles system is at the goaltending position, and without any new prospects in this year’s draft, it could create a problem down the line. Overall they could use more depth at every position, especially on defense.

28. Toronto Maple Leafs
Strengths: The Leafs have some talented prospects at the top of their list. Alexander Steen is an all-round talent who has come over to Toronto after two strong developmental years in Sweden, and been very impressive. Carlo Colaiacovo is a solid blue line prospect, even if he has yet to stick with the big club. This past summer, with their first first-round selection since 2002, the club solidified itself in goal by selecting Tuukka Rask out of Finland. The Leafs have shown improved drafting ability beyond the first round as well, with prospects like Dimitri Vorobiev, Robbie Earl and Steffan Kronwall all taken in the fifth round or later.
Weaknesses: Overall depth remains a notable weakness for the organization, especially on the wings. The club has far too often sacrificed prospects and draft picks in trades for veteran talent, although this may have to change in the new economic world.
Top Prospects: Alexander Steen (C), Carlo Colaiaco

29. St. Louis Blues
Strengths: Up front, Jay McClement has already taken his two-way game to the NHL. Meanwhile, Alexei Shkotov and newly drafted T.J. Oshie both have offensive potential. The future of the blue line recently received a shot in the arm thanks to the selection of Scott Jackson in the draft and acquiring Doug Lynch and Jeff Woywitka from the Edmonton Oilers. Finally, between the pipes, Marek Schwarz is the Blues top prospect, while Jason Bacashihua provides some quality depth.
Weaknesses: There are a lot of questions with most of the Blues prospects on whether or not they will be able to make it to the NHL and produce when they get there. The Blues have been consistently competitive over the years and have not been as fortunate in finding gems in the later rounds as most teams. It also doesn’t help that the organization doesn’t shy away from dealing away picks. As a result, a lot of their prospects have an uncertain future, while the players who could be considered a bit more sure-fire have a limited ceiling.

30. Tampa Bay Lightning
Strengths: Tampa Bay’s future is looking up, but that could be just because the majority of their prospects are well above six feet tall. The Lightning have plenty of towers on defense, headlined by Mike Egener and newly drafted Vladimir Mihalik. Paul Ranger has already suited up this year for Tampa Bay on the blue line. Up front, Adam Henrich and Alexander Polushin highlight what is mainly a group of checkers and character forwards. Meanwhile, forwards Evgeni Artukhin and Nick Tarnasky have also seen NHL ice time this year.
Weaknesses: Tampa Bay’s Stanley Cup victory came at a price -- their prospect pool is bare. None of the players listed appear to be capable of developing into marquee players. This is especially apparent in goal, where there is a lot of quantity but the quality is suspect. But with Tampa Bay’s core players in the NHL still relatively young, they have enough time to restock.

Red Wings assign Grand Rapids Griffin Jiri Hudler again.

Heb 'm vaak zien spelen hier in de arena, zeer mooie speler maar wel erg licht (Height: 5' 10", Weight: 180 lbs). Technisch gezien kan ie alles.



Griffins ondertussen een goed seizoen, duidelijke koploper in de AHL en Hudler nummer twee op de topscorerslijst.

Hudler is een prima speler voor de AHL maar komt duidelijk te kort voor de NHL

Avery zorgt voor onrust
Weet u het nog? In het seizoen 2004-05 zou Sean Avery tijdens de lockout bij Eaters Geleen gaan spelen. Het feest ging echter op het laatste moment niet door. Een komst van Avery had niet alleen op het ijs voor de nodige commotie kunnen zorgen. De Canadees bijt dit jaar ook naast het ijs flink van zich af.


Het meest recente incident speelde zich afgelopen vrijdag af in de kleedkamer van de LA Kings, de huidige club van Avery. Hij had in aanwezigheid van de pers een aanvaring met Anaheim commentator Brian Hayward, zelf een voormalig NHL-goalie. De onderlinge irritatie was ontstaan nadat Hayward tijdens een vorige wedstrijd Avery beschuldigd had van het bewust vermijden van een confrontatie met Mighty Ducks Todd Fedoruk.

'Je bent een schandelijke vertoning', riep Avery volgens de LA Times in de overvolle kleedkamer. Hayward reageerde snel. 'Als je een schandelijke vertoning wilt zien moet je in de spiegel kijken, Sean.' Assistent coach Ray Bennet zou Avery daarna hebben moeten tegenhouden.

'Jij bent de reden dat de NHL nog geen landelijke TV-deal heeft', vervolgde Avery zijn tirade. 'Je bent een slechte commentator en je was een slechte speler.' Ook nu had Hayward zijn antwoord klaar. 'Hoe kun jij dat nou weten? Toen ik speelde zat jij voor het derde jaar in groep acht.'

Avery heeft zich al het hele seizoen aardig in de schijnwerper weten te houden. Tijdens de pre-season haalde hij uit naar Frans-Canadezen. Hij zei dat Dennis Gauthier 'een typisch voorbeeld van een Fransoos die met een vizier stoer doet, maar dat niet is' was.

Enkele maanden later werd hij door Georges Laraque van de Edmonton Oilers beschuldigd van rascistische uitspraken.

Avery was ook de eerste speler ooit die beboet werd voor 'diving'. Hij haalde fel uit naar de NHL vanwege zijn straf. 'Hoe kan iemand die op een kantoortje in New York zit nou bepalen of ik me liet vallen of niet? En ik krijg niet eens te horen om welke wedstrijd het ging, laat staan om welke situatie.'

Positief nieuws
Er is ook positief nieuws te melden uit de NHL. Zo tegen het einde van het seizoen gaan er weer wat records gebroken worden. We noemen twee interessante zaken.

Jaromir Jagr kan de tweede speler in de geschiedenis worden die de Art Ross Trophy met een tussenpose van vijf jaar opnieuw wint. Alleen de legendarische Bobby Orr flikte hetzelfde kunstje in 1970 en 1975. Jagr won zijn laatste Art Ross Trophy in 2001.

De Tsjech speelde dit seizoen eindelijk weer dominant. Hij scoorde dit seizoen 53 goals en 56 assists voor een totaal van 119 punten. Hij heeft een aardige kans om als tweede beste scorer ooit te eindigen. Alleen Mario Lemieux is feitelijk niet meer te achterhalen. Die won in 1996 de Art Ross Trophy met 69 doelpunten en 52 assists.

Alexander Ovechkin heeft zijn honderdste punt binnengesleept. Maandagavond scoorde hij in overtime tegen Boston zijn 49e doelpunt en 100e punt van het seizoen. In de afgelopen vijf wedstrijden had hij niet gescoord.

Als Ovechkin in de resterende vier wedstrijden nog één doelpunt scoort, dan is hij na Teemu Selanne pas de tweede NHL rookie ooit die 50 goals en 100 punten in één seizoen scoort.

Oranje-team WK bekend


Bondscoach Doug Mason heeft de selectie voor het wereldkampioenschap in Estland bekendgemaakt. Opvallend is de terugkeer van Kevin Hoogsteen in Oranje en de selectie van 'youngsters' Jordy van Oorschot en Kevin Bruijsten.

Interessant is ook de toevoeging van Chris Eimers aan de technische staf van Oranje als assistent-coach. Eimers is al enkele maanden uitgeschakeld met een blessure. Bij de selectie moest rekening worden gehouden dat verschillende spelers wegens bijvoorbeeld werkverplichtingen niet beschikbaar waren.
Oranje gaat op pad met drie goalies, Phil Groeneveld, Peter Seton en Casper Swart. De technische staf van Oranje selecteerde de ervaren Justen Bekkering, Tommie Hartogs en Rody Jacobs. Ook Maarten de Groot en Bjorn Willemse zijn van de partij. Erik Tummers en Jordy van Oorschot maken hun debuut tijdens een seniorenkampioenschap.

Aanvallend is Marcel Kars ondanks zijn contract in Australië gewoon opgenomen in de selectie. Verder keert Kevin Hoogsteen, een deel van dit seizoen actief in de Italiaanse tweede liga, terug in de selectie. De in Noorwegen weer makkelijk scorende veteraan Dave Livingston is weer van de partij, Casey Vanschagen zijn debuut maakt voor Oranje tijdens een écht kampioenschap, net als Kevin Bruijsten van Heerenveen. Beiden waren al van de partij tijdens het recente vierlandentoernooi in Tilburg.

De Sharks hebben, na de winst gisteren op de Coyotes (eindelijk eens een keer; beetje een syndroom van gekregen dit jaar) 5 duels op rij gewonnen. Woensdag nacht en donderdag nacht volgen nog 2 hele belangrijke wedstrijden tegen de Canucks waarin het helemaal veilig gesteld moet worden.

Nadeel van zo'n eindspurt als van de Sharks is dat ze er waarschijnlijk helemaal doorheen zitten als de play offs van start gaan. Al was het alleen maar mentaal.

DETROIT (AP) - Calgary Flames winger Darren McCarty, a former Red Wing who was one of Detroit's most popular professional athletes in recent years, has filed for bankruptcy.

In documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit, McCarty listed assets of $1.9 million US and debts of $6.2 million.

In addition to at least $185,000 owed to casinos in Detroit and Las Vegas, he listed debts to banks, credit card companies, friends, utilities, law firms and a roofing company.

McCarty, 34, said in court filings that many of his assets are tied up in insurance polices, his NHL pension and $490,000 in business loans that are unlikely to be repaid.

McCarty played 11 seasons for the Red Wings. The defenceman's combativeness, charitable work and sideline as a rock guitarist made him a fan favourite. McCarty also scored the winning goal in the clinching game in 1997 as Detroit won its first Stanley Cup in 42 years.





The Red Wings bought out McCarty's contract in July after a lockout of NHL players cancelled the 2004-2005 season. He currently plays for the Flames and has seven goals and six assists in 65 games this season.

McCarty listed his income as $2.1 million in 2003, $1.5 million in 2004 and $193,959 in 2005. According to court documents, McCarty received $538,729 from the Red Wings when they bought out his contract, but his ex-wife Cheryl received 75 per cent of that - $404,046.

Marty Fried, McCarty's lawyer, blamed the bankruptcy on last season's NHL lockout, the divorce that was finalized in February 2005 and a smaller contract with the Flames.

"He's not making the money he used to make," Fried told the Detroit Free Press in a report published Wednesday. He said McCarty now makes about $850,000 (The NHL Players' Association lists his current salary at $800,000).

Nothing indicates McCarty's financial problems are linked to the McCarty Cancer Foundation, the Oakland County-based charity he and his family founded in honour of his father, Craig, who died from multiple myeloma in 1999. McCarty serves as an unpaid director of the foundation, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years.

The Detroit Free Press said it could not reach McCarty for comment.

EL SEGUNDO, California (Ticker) - The highest scoring left wing in NHL history is hanging up his skates.

Luc Robitaille of the Los Angeles Kings announced his retirement on Tuesday, effective at the end of the season.

An eight-time All-Star, Robitaille has recorded 668 goals and 726 assists for 1,394 points in 1,428 NHL games. He is the Kings' all-time leader with 557 goals.

"I have had an incredible journey playing the game I love and my decision to retire has been a very difficult one for me, my wife Stacia and my entire family to make," Robitaille said at a news conference at the Toyota Sports Center.

Robitaille, 40, played 14 of his 19 seasons with the Kings. He has 15 goals and nine assists in 62 games this season.





"We have always hoped that Luc Robitaille eventually retired in a Kings uniform," Kings general manager Dave Taylor said. "He certainly had an incredible career all the while remaining one of the most popular players ever to wear a Kings jersey."

The Calder Trophy winner as the NHL Rookie of the Year in 1987 with the Kings, Robitaille also played with Pittsburgh (1994-95), the New York Rangers (1995-97) and Detroit (2001-03).

"The game of hockey has given me so much and it is very difficult to leave," Robitaille said. "Los Angeles is where I started my career and it is where I have always wanted to end my career."

Robitaille also holds the single-season record for goals and points by a left wing with 63 and 125 for the Kings in 1992-93. He recorded three 50-goal seasons and is the only left wing in NHL history to compile eight consecutive 40-goal seasons.

Robitaille is 10th overall in goals and second among active players to Steve Yzerman of Detroit (692).

"On the ice, Luc Robitaille earned every one of his many accomplishments through persistence and hard work," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

The Detroit Free Press said it could not reach McCarty for comment.

It appears Sean Avery's career with the Los Angeles Kings is over.

A source told the Los Angeles Times reports that Avery had an argument with assistant coach Mark Hardy during practice Wednesday, and did not travel with the team to Phoenix after meeting with general manager Dave Taylor and interim coach John Torchetti.

A spokesman for the Kings told the paper that while Avery was not suspended, he will not play in the final three games of the regular season or playoffs should the team qualify.

"We're moving on without him," the spokesman told the Times. "We have informed Sean of this."

Avery will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.





The incident reportedly occurred when Avery was asked by Hardy to do a drill in practice. Avery refused and was told to leave the ice.

Avery has been in and out of hot water all year long.

In pre-season, Avery said a hit by then-Phoenix defenceman Denis Gauthier on Kings centre Jeremy Roenick "was typical of most French guys in our league with a visor on, running around and playing tough and not back anything up."

In an October game, he was accused by Edmonton's Georges Laraque of using a racial slur.

He also was the first NHL player this season to be fined $1,000 US for diving and reacted by hammering the league for it.

"How can a guy sitting in an office in New York determine if you dived or not by watching a tape?" Avery said. "They don't know if you had a bad ankle or torn bursa sac or something. I can't even tell you what play they are talking about. They don't have to tell you a play, just what game they are looking at.

"No question that this is a way (for the league) to do something to me. It has nothing to do with diving. How can Colin Campbell, or whoever it is, sit at a desk and make that call? They should send the tape to all seven members of the competition committee and let them look at it."

He also had a heated verbal exchange with Anaheim broadcaster and former NHL goalie Brian Hayward in the dressing room Friday before players and media.

It looks as though there could be a changing of the guard with the Los Angeles Kings.

Sources suggest that the Kings have decided that general manager Dave Taylor will not return in that position after this season. Some sources say Taylor has already been told by team's ownership that he won't be returning.

Taylor has one year left on his contract.

In nine years with Taylor as GM, the Kings have qualified for the playoffs just four times but only managed to advance past the first round once.

Taylor himself has said only that team president Tim Leiweke told him all facets and positions within the organization will be re-evaluated after the regular season, which ends on Tuesday.

However, published reports in Los Angeles earlier this week said that Leiweke has already spoken to former San Jose Sharks general manager Dean Lombardi, who is currently a pro scout with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Lombardi has also been linked to general manager roles with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders.

The Kings' Ryan Flinn took his enforcer duties to a new level last week.

He and his fiancee, Danielle Sarowitz, were at their apartment last Wednesday, when they heard shouting. Sarowitz looked outside and saw a man attacking a woman.

A moment later, the attacker was grabbed and tossed aside by 6-foot-5, 250-pound Flinn, who one season accumulated 365 penalty minutes while playing for Halifax of the Quebec junior league.

"I just pulled the guy off her," said Flinn, who has been out most of the season because of a concussion. "The guy was drunk. He looked a little surprised and started screaming, then he ran off."

Flinn and Sarowitz stayed with the woman until police arrived, then Flinn went with the police to find the suspect. They found him a few blocks away.

"We got the guy and I gave a statement," Flinn said. "I walked the lady home, then called it an evening."

Flinn shrugged about being asked about his actions.

"That's what anyone would do," he said.

OTTAWA (CP) - Ottawa Senators defenceman Wade Redden flew home to Lloydminster, Sask., on Sunday following his mother's death.

Pat Redden, 57, lost her battle with cancer on Saturday night, the Senators said Sunday as the team prepared to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarter-final series.

Defenceman Christoph Schubert took Redden's spot in the lineup for Sunday night's game.

''We're definitely going to miss him,'' said Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. ''There are things that are more important than hockey. He's going through a tough time and our thoughts are with him.''

Een beetje kabelprovider heeft tegenwoordig NASN (North American Sports Network) in het digitale pakket zitten. Althans, ik weet dat Casema en UPC deze zender in het pakket hebben.

NASN zend in ieder geval een deel van de NHL uit... niet alle wedstrijden, dat worden er te veel. (Ze worden in de VS op lokale stations uitgezonden, als er wedstrijden tegelijk gespeeld worden krijg je vaak alleen de wedstrijd van het lokale team te zien.)

Amerikaanse term voor de goedkoopste plaatsen, inderdaad achterin.

De term "nose-bleed" komt van dat je zo hoog zou zitten, dat je neus gaat bloeden door het drukverschil op grote hoogten. Bergbeklimmers schijnen hier wel eens last van te hebben

Ben 3 keer naar een ijshockey wedstrijd geweest, 1 keer in Heerenveen (bagger) en 2 keer in Tsjechië. Tsjechië was geweldig, wat een sfeer (Pardubice)

In Heerenveen kan het ook best leuk zijn hoor! Maar ook vrij saai op zijn tijd. Ligt ook aan de tegenstander en het belang van de wedstrijd natuurlijk. Maar met wat geluk heb je sfeer en een mooie wedstrijd...

En inderdaad, de sfeer is ook belangrijk. Dat is al de helft van het plezier natuurlijk.

Bij de Knicks en Rangers was er ook een verschil, maar dat was verklaarbaar aan de hand van speeloppervlak...

Kon van de Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim alleen maar een concert-setup vinden.... Het stadion word naast IJshockey natuurlijk ook voor andere evenementen gebruikt. Ik heb daar o.a. Sarah McLachlan, Aerosmith & Lenny Kravitz gezien. Ook was het WK turnen hier in 2005, worden er ook basketball wedstrijden gespeeld (Clippers & Lakers), Kunstschaatsen, WWE (nep-worstelen ), WK Badminton, Extreme sports zoals Skateboarding, BMX, etc, en we hebben zelfs een LaCrosse team hier!

Er passen zo'n 17.000 man voor hockey.
