Roddick and Johansson's big-serving battle

Earlier Roddick and the match-rusty Joachim Johansson (no relation to Thomas) had laid on a glorious feast of big serving and holding your nerve under pressure. For those who like their tennis like a gunfight, with the biggest bullets fired at the first moment of danger, it was probably the ultimate experience, but those who prefer the game to be played with rhythm, fluency and subtlety would have found it a bit of a trial. At one stage, one wag shouted out from the seats "Give us a break" A break of serve, he almost certainly meant.

By the time he got one, Roddick was closing in on victory. He had played the two tiebreaks with the benefit of both experience and match-toughness, not once dropping a point on his own serve and teasing Johansson into making errors on the crucial points. Players and officials of both sides were unanimous in their praise for Roddick, who had clearly picked up where he left off against Roger Federer in the US Open quarterfinals.

Roddick sends USA to the Final
For the ninth time at the ninth time of asking, Andy Roddick saw the United States Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team into the next round and this time the next round is the Final, and a home shot at the defending champions, Russia.


Roddick wasn't quite at his best against Jonas Bjorkman, a late replacement for the originally nominated Thomas Johansson who was suffering from stomach problems, but he used all attributes of his game to beat the Swede 62 76(3) 64 and see off the Americans' jinx at the Scandinavium.

The arena, scene of three previous US Davis Cup debacles, seemed to have given up hope of staging a fourth home upset, the rows of red seats much less full than they had been on Friday and Saturday when home hopes were high.


Roddick maintains Davis Cup record

One of the reasons for the absence of home hope on the final day was that Roddick's reputation as a Davis Cup competitor precedes him. He has never lost when playing to see his country win the decisive point, and his devotion to tennis's premier team competition was evident when he said afterwards: "If I don't win another match between now and the final but we win the final, I'll take that."

"This is my No. 1 priority for the rest of the year, and I"ll be discussing my tournament schedule with Jimmy [Connors, his coach] and Patrick [McEnroe, his team captain] to make sure I look after my body and it's right where it needs to be for the final."

Only once was Roddick truly threatened, and that came in the fifth game of the second set. Bjorkman, at 35 still a very useful returner of serve, finally got a good connection on three of Roddick's serves and earned himself two break points. In doing so, he caused Roddick to stumble and fall, so the American asked for the court to be wiped dry. The couple of minutes this took didn't please either Bjorkman or the crowd, and Roddick was booed as he stepped up to serve at 15-40. Bad move!


Americans celebrate semifinal victory

The booing merely geed up Roddick, he duly delivered four unreturnable serves, and the danger was over. Once Bjorkman had taken six points to get going in the tiebreak, and Roddick had broken in the fourth game of the third set, the match was over as a contest, and Roddick won in just over two hours. He sank to his knees on the carpet court that had been so much more preferable to the Americans than the clay the Russians chose for last year's semifinal in Moscow.

"It's what you practise for," said Roddick in an on-court interview. "It's what you work for. I'm so proud to be part of this team, I'm so proud of my teammates, I wouldn't trade this team for any in the world. I love these guys, and we get another shot at winning the Davis Cup, so I'm really happy right now."

The victory was a triumph for positive thinking among the Americans. Their jinx at the Scandinavium seemed to have reared its ugly head on Friday when all four players woke up with flu-like symptoms. But they came through, and ultimately with something to spare, as the Swedes were also struggling with their health.


First final in USA since 1992

Aside from Thomas Johansson's temperature, Joachim Johansson was so sore after his three-setter against Roddick on Friday that he was replaced for the final singles by Simon Aspelin who had never played a tour-level singles match before. He got four games against James Blake, the American's 61 63 victory making the final score 4-1.

The Americans will host the final (30 November - 2 December) for the first time since 1992, when one of the greatest line-ups in the competition's history featuring four past, present and future world No. 1s Sampras, Courier, Agassi, McEnroe - beat Switzerland 3-1 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Andy Withdraws from Bangkok

Andy has been forced to withdraw from the Thailand Open in Bangkok.

Andy had been scheduled to face Yeu-Tzuoo Wang of Chinese Taipei Wednesday evening, but unfortunately was forced to withdraw before the match due to a left foot injury.

His place in the draw has been taken by fellow American, Phillip King. AndyRoddick.com’s Guest Reporter for the week, Yui went to Andy’s press conference and was able to update us that the injury occured last night and Andy tried to do all he could in order to be able to play.

Andy woke up this morning and the injury felt fine, but unfortunately it flared up again in practice later on and he was forced to stop.

Andy will return to the states to consult with the US Davis Cup team doctor and have an MRI scan.

Portland, Oregon to Host DC Final

2007The USTA yesterday announced that the Memorial Colesium in Portland, Oregon, will be the host for the 2007 Davis Cup Final between USA and Russia.Speaking about the venue decision, Captain Patrick McEnroe said: "We"re excited to be playing in Portland and we hope to have a strong home-court advantage. We expect a spirited battle as the Russians will look to repeat as Davis Cup champions, but our players have been committed to Davis Cup for many years and have a strong drive to bring the Cup back to the USA."

Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive, Pro Tennis, USTA said: "The stage is set for a memorable event—a classic match-up between our top American team and the defending Davis Cup champions from Russia. This is the first Davis Cup Final in the U.S. in 15 years, and we expect a pumped up and patriotic capacity crowd in the great city of Portland- one of the most passionate sports cities in the country."

Last weekend, Andy, James Blake and the Bryan twins were the four man team that beat Sweden 4-1 in Gothenburg in the World Group semifinals to advance to the final which will be played 30Nov-2Dec. It is the first home Davis Cup final that the USA will play in 15 years.

2007Andy has become the fifth player to qualify for the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, held at the Qi Zhong Stadium 11-18 November.

It is the fifth straight year that Andy has qualified for the Masters Cup, an event where the Top 7 players in the ATP 2007 Race plus a Grand Slam Champion who finishes inside the Top 20 contest the final tournament of the year.

The other four players to have qualified are Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko. Competition is hotting up for the remaining three places after early losses this week in Madrid for many of those fighting for a place this.

Andy’s best results at the Tennis Masters Cup have come when the event was held in Houston, Texas and Andy reached the semifinals twice, in 2003 and 2004.

Andy was the fifth person to qualify for Shanghai. Now, Andy takes his place with the seven other elite players of the 2007 tennis season, for the Masters Cup.

On Wednesday in Shanghai, the draw was made. The eight players were split into two groups. Andy has been placed in the Red Group, where he is joined by Roger Federer, Nikolay Davydenko and Fernando Gonzalez.

The Blue Group features the young guns, with Rafael Nadal, Richard Gasquet, Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer making up that group.

The Blue group gets underway first, as they begin play on Sunday.
Andy and the rest of the Red Group will play their first matches on Monday.

Andy Roddick says has been passionate about the Davis Cup since watching the 1992 final and that victory over Russia to win this year's title would achieve a lifelong ambition.

Big-serving Roddick, the world number six, will spearhead the American challenge against the defending champions when the three-day tie starts on Friday in Portland.

"I went to my first Davis Cup tie, the '92 final, when I was nine or 10 years old," Roddick said at Memorial Coliseum. "I saw possibly the greatest Davis Cup team ever play and win there."

Tennis greats John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Jim Courier earned the United States a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in that year's final in Fort Worth, Texas.

"It really struck a chord with me and I've always been excited about Davis Cup," added Roddick, who made his debut in the global team competition as an 18-year-old in 2001.

"It's always been a huge priority for me and it's been on my list of goals to accomplish, the top couple of things since I started. I'm glad to be here."

The 25-year-old Texas resident will team up with James Blake and the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, as the Americans seek their first Davis Cup triumph since 1995 on clay in Moscow.

Roddick has beaten Russia's top player, Nikolay Davydenko , in their five career meetings but is prepared to sacrifice that record for the team cause.

"I couldn't care less if I extend the streak," the 2003 US Open champion said. "If I lose to him and I lose to everybody else and we win, I don't really care. It's about the culmination of a year.

"Obviously, it would be nice to get a win but we're here to get three points as a team. That's the goal."

He made his Davis Cup debut in 2001 in a World Group first-round match against Switzerland in Basel where US captain Patrick McEnroe took charge for the first time.

"This has been a journey," Roddick added. "Like Patrick said on court, we've been to some places. When you're just with these guys, you develop friendships. There's so much that goes into this.

"Winning the US Open, trying to compete for slams, you're playing for a lot of selfish reasons.

"But to come in here and to share this with these guys and to have developed the friendships and everything that goes along with it, the laughs and the tears, it's just amazing."

World number six Roddick set the tone for the US victory over Russia by outclassing Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-4 6-2 in the opening rubber of the three-day tie.

It was his sixth Davis Cup singles win of the year, and his 21st in 30 appearances.

"He has been waiting for this moment for a long time," McEnroe said of Roddick's performance.

"The way he handled the match emotionally was just real professional and real mature.

"I think the biggest key for us this weekend was the guys really kept their emotions in check," McEnroe added.

"They went out and prepared really well all week.

"Even in the last month or so, they had different sorts of schedules but they all were thinking about this, preparing themselves individually as well as they could."

When the guests walked in, they were escorted by the Marines, received a glass of champagne and had the opportunity to get their picture taken with the Davis Cup. A variety of silent auction items such as sports memorabilia, vacations, and dinner certificates were up for the taking during cocktail hour, followed by the live auction during dinner with 13 lucky winners. One of those winners was Mrs. Roddick, and she was the lucky lady who won the first dance with Andy, which was purchased by Maria Sharapova for her. Then, a dance with Maria was auctioned off. With everyone’s dancing shoes on in the season of giving, they celebrated their success by burning up the dance floor.On Sunday, the foundation had the free Kids Zone in the morning and then Andy played in celebrity exhibition matches with Maria, Davis Cup compatriot James Blake, Brenda, and Boyd. All 2,000 fans enjoyed mixed doubles, singles matches, and a super tie break, and the fans also had a chance to get the players’ autographs throughout the day. At the end, a group of giving fans stepped up to the baseline to attempt to take the heat of three of Andy’s rocket serves.

Thanks to all of the generous people who helped make this weekend the huge success that it was in helping children today for tomorrow.

Fresh from Davis Cup success with his United States teammates, a relaxed and refreshed Andy Roddick has returned to Melbourne after his off-season break primed for an assault on this year's Australian Open.

Speaking at the media conference in the lead-up to this year's AAMI Classic, Roddick said that it was great to end last year on such a high.

"It was a dream of mine (to win Davis Cup) and I'm happy to have ended the year on a good note," he said.

He was quick to dismiss claims that the new Plexicushion court surface would favour some of the local players.

"Everybody's going to play on the same surface," he said.

He also emphasised that pre-tournament withdrawal of Roger Federer from the Kooyong event would not act as a distraction for his Australian Open preparation.

"None of us are worried about Roger's preparation for the Open."

Roddick is drawn to play powerful Croatian Ivan Ljubicic in his first match at Kooyong on Wednesday.

Waar Roger Federer en David Nalbandian tijdens hun voorbereiding op de Australian Open gehinderd worden door blessures, vergaat het Andy Roddick een stuk beter. De Amerikaan begon zijn seizoen woensdag met een eenvoudige overwinning op Ivan Ljubicic bij de Kooyong Classic in Melbourne. Bij het voorbereidingstoernooi op de Australian Open was Roddick met 6-3, 6-0 te sterk voor de Kroaat.

Roddick kwam voor het laatst in actie tijdens de finale van de Davis Cup, waarin hij zijn land de eindzege bezorgde. 'Ik speelde constant, de returns liepen soepel en ik maakte ook weinig onnodige fouten,' liet de nummer zes van de wereld na afloop weten.
