EastEnders: Entire Ferreira family axed

Just one week after new EastEnders executive producer Kathleen Hutchison wielded the axe on Jill Halfpenny (Kate Mitchell), yet more casualties have now been confirmed.

Unsurprisingly, it was announced tonight that the entire Ferreira family are being dropped from the show early next year. Those included are Ameet Chana (Adi), Raji James (Ash), Ray Panthaki (Ronny), Pooja Shah (Kareena), Nabil Elouahabi (Tariq) and newcomer Jemma Walker (Sasha Perkins).

The family joined EastEnders just 16 months ago but are cited as one of the main reasons for its recent ratings decline.

"The acting ability of all of the talent has been outstanding over the past year and we would like to thank them for their professionalism and dedication to the job," said an EastEnders spokeswoman. "We wish them all the very best of luck for the future."

No word has yet been given on how the six will make their exit, planned for next Spring.

"I’ve really enjoyed being part of the show and look forward to moving on to pastures new," said Elouahabi.

Shah added: "I’ve loved being part of the show and I’m going to miss everyone involved, cast, crew and production because it’s like having been part of a family."

'So much of what's been written is rubbish. It goes straight over my head. I've got more important things to focus on now-like a future with my baby and Peter, who's the love of my life. And my friends and family truth - that's what's important.' Not that Elaine, who was sacked from EastEnders earlier this year, is pleading innocent to all charges levelled against her. She's happy to admit to past mistakes - some of them pretty big ones. But now she's glowing with health after on a holiday with fiance Peter Manuel, the man she calls her 'fat George Clooney lookalike; and wants to
settle record straight about some of the more outrageous rumours.

'Look, I'm not pretending I'm perfect. Yes, Peter was a married man with three kids and I was in a long-term relationship when we started our affair. And, yes, there was a time when I drank too much to blot out the guilt,' she says. 'But some of the stories are ridiculous. I mean, the other day I read that my baby may be stillborn because I was still boozing. Charming!

'That's one story that got to me - I cried. But my boozing days are over. When I was first pregnant I had the odd glass of red wine, but I stopped after reading that even small amounts of alcohol can damage an unborn baby.'

She believes that playing one of the troublesome Slater sisters made her a target from the moment she arrived in Albert
Square. At first, EastEnders was fantastic, but before long I started getting bad press,' she says. 'I remember the first negative story- apparently, I went running around a plane saying that we were about to be hijacked. Hello! I'd have been arrested if that was true.

'But after that I was labelled as a drunk. I couldn't even pop out to my local shop without a picture appearing of me looking rough and a caption saying I was on the way to the off-licence. I'm just a normal person. I still nip to the shop with my nightie under my coat. I didn't know I was expected to wear full slap to get a pint of milk. Who hasn't picked a bad picture up from Snappy Snaps and ripped it up before anyone could see it? The difference for me is those are the pictures that appeared in the newspapers.' According to Elaine, one story that's been consistently wide of the mark concerns her reported rows with fellow cast members - especially Jessie Wallace, who plays her screen sister Kat. 'I read that I was a bully on the set - that's a real laugh. I mean, me? Bully Jessie Wallace? I don't think so. If there was any bullying on that set, it certainly wasn't coming from me. I was badly bullied at school, so I hate anything like that. At the first sign of trouble, I duck.

'I'm not saying there were never cross words between me and Jessie. We worked closely together for four years, so there was bound to be the odd flare-up, but we never had physical fights. We never had to be separated by security guards a,
reported-that's codswallop. Look, if she was gunning for m I'd run a mile. I'm feisty, but I'm not one to throw a punch.'

Elaine's also miffed at report that she was so unpopular that her fellow cast members didn't buy her a present when she left 'That's another load of rubbish I was one of the most popular people on that set,' she says. 'I was presented with a big Albert Square board signed by all the cast, a Tiffany necklace and earrings and so many bouquet I had to give most of them away, 'In any workplace you're always going to get some people you don't click with, but I liked most of the cast very much. They work such long hours that I haven't seen them much since I left, but were still in touch. Kacey Ainsworth, who plays Little Mo, has given me loads of her maternity clothes.'

One headline-grabbing story that Elaine is happy to confess to is her affair with the man who'll soon be her husband. They met in 2001 while filming on location in Brighton. Elaine was shooting Lynne and Garry's engagement storyline and Peter, 41, was working as a BBC technician. They got chatting in a hotel one evening and the chemistry was instant, despite the fact that they were both very much attached. Peter was married with three kids and Elaine had been living with actor Gerard Rooney for 11 years. They fell madly in love, but the situation left both tortured by shame and guilt.

'It was love from about night number two,' says Elaine. 'But I suffered very badly from guilt. Look, when you're a little girl you don't grow up dreaming of a married man with three kids. It's very complicated and you end up hurting a lot of people, for which I'm very, very sorry.

'But you can't help who you fall in love with. We tried our best to resist it. I didn't want to hurt Gerard-he'd done nothing wrong- and there were Peter's wife and kids to consider. Carrying on an affair was a nightmare. We had lots of sneaky meetings in hotels and made all the usual excuses about working late. I was lying on a 24/7 basis, which is a horrible thing to do.

'Gerard knew that something is going on and kept asking me what was wrong, but I just did: "Nothing." I'd never been
unfaithful before and the guilt is so overwhelming that when the affair was exposed by a paper it came as a relief. After that, everything happened very quickly. Gerard moved out of my house in North London and Peter moved in. 'Now I wish we hadn't been such cowards. We knew we wanted to be together, but just couldn't face telling our partners. If we had, we'd have saved everybody a lot of grief.'

Much of that grief relates to Elaine's drinking, which she admits escalated out of control she struggled with the guilt. 'Drinking blotted it out,' she admits. 'I've always enjoyed a drink, but there's a big difference between drinking socially and drinking through sadness and depression. My drinking problem lasted eight months and there were times when I was drunk at work- I'm not denying it. It's not true that members of the cast complained, although some did talk to me out of love and concern.

'JohnYorke, the producer at the time, called me in and told me to take three months off and get myself sorted out. I didn't think it was affecting my work, but I guess it must have been. It was a shock.'

After that, Elaine cut down with the help of a counsellor. But not before the drinking had caused some embarrassing headlines, such as her arrest in July 2001 for drink-driving. But Elaine is adamant that her drinking wasn't the reason she was sacked earlier this year. That, she insists, was due to her outspokenness at production meetings, when she spoke up about the stresses that working 13-hour days were placing
on the cast. 'I wasn't upset when they told me that I was sacked.

It'd been on the cards for so long that it came as a relief,' she says. And I wasn't sad the day I left. I knew that I was pregnant and I was looking forward to starting a new chapter of my life.'

But even leaving EastEnders didn't allow Elaine to escape her reputation. This summer, she was plastered all over the papers yet again after a brawl in a pub where she was celebrating Arsenal FC's Premiership triumph. Snapped with bruises and a cut lip, she was accused of drunkenly picking fights and spilling beer over a baby.

But Elaine insists it was she picking some broken glass up from the floor when this woman and her boyfriend attacked me,' she says. 'They just kicked me to the ground. I called the police and they ran away. The next thing I knew I was all over the papers accused of being drunk while pregnant and starting a fight. But I wasn't drunk - I'd had one glass of red wine.

'Life's too short to worry about these things, though. And besides, I want to focus on the future, not the past.'

Contrary to reports, Elaine's future doesn't include a tell-all book about life on EastEnders - that's something Elaine says is simply not her style. For now, her attention is focused firmly on Peter and the baby, which is due on 15 January. And there's no mistaking the joy on Elaine's face when she talks about their future.

'I always wanted kids, but not until I met the right man - and now I have,' she says. 'Peter's the love of my life. He's kind, caring and funny- just a really, really lovely special man.

'We're very happy together. I know Peter will be a brilliant dad because I see him with his kids, who are 11, nine and seven. He's fantastic with them. They come and stay with us at weekends, and we all get on really well. I can't think of a single down side to Peter. Well, OK, he snores, but I even find that cute. I'll have to shut up about him now, because I'm even making myself want to vomit!'

Any day now, Peter's divorce will be finalised and then he and Elaine will get down to planning their wedding. ' We'll have the rings blessed by a priest at the baby's christening - I'm a Catholic and can't marry in church because Peter's divorced - and then have a quiet ceremony at a register office,' says Elaine. And no, we won't be selling the pictures!

'In the meantime, I'm enjoying lots of nest building-we've decorated the nursery. And I'm loving doing things I haven't been able to do for four years, such as just relax and read a book. I do want to carry on acting eventually, but I want to spend some time with my baby first. And I think I'll be a good mum - loving but firm.

'Peter and the baby mean everything to me now. They're my future - and all the bad stuff is well and truly in the past.'

Jessie may not come back

Jessie Wallace's character, Kat Slater, is set to leave EastEnders on November 5 after her marriage collapses.

Jessie is re-assessing her priorities in the light of recent problems with high blood pressure and the baby she is carrying, and although her short-term plan is to take a year off, the situation may be more final. Caring for the baby may well become her top priority.

Her partner, Dave Morgan, told Closer magazine: "I'm not sure if Jessie will go back or not. We are so excited and can't wait to have the baby. We're happier than we've ever been."

EastEnders bosses optimistically think that Jessie will return to the show in mid-2005.

'EastEnders' actor fights work permit ban

Dalip Tahil, who played Dan Ferreira in EastEnders, is going to appeal to the Immigration Appellate Authority to contest the Home Office's decision not to grant him a work permit. If the appeal fails, Tahil faces deportation back to India.

The actor was cast in the soap having come over to Britain to feature in the musical Bombay Dreams in 2002. In India he is well-known from appearing in scores of Bollywood movies.

Equity, the actors' union in the UK, objected to the 51-year-old appearing in the soap, as his permit was only for the purposes of the musical due to his specialist skills. The BBC made a retrospective application to the Home Office but was unsuccessful.

"My plea to the Home Office is that the decision should be made on its merits and not on the basis that I am a well-known personality and that an example should be made of me.

"I've never asked for preferential treatment because I am an actor and by the same yard stick I shouldn't be dealt with harshly because I am an actor," Tahil said before today's hearing.

Joel Beckett, who played Lee in The Office, has signed up to join the people of Albert Square. Kathleen Hutchinson, new EastEnders boss has acquired Beckett's services in a bid to recover from the show's ratings slump, though reports vary as to whether he has signed a one or three-year contract.

Beckett is to play Alfie Moon's cousin Jake. He is to arrive on New Year's Eve with his brother, who is yet to be cast.

An EastEnders spokesman said: "The gorgeous brothers are set to ruffle feathers all around Albert Square.

"Den and Dennis need to watch out - there's a new dynamic duo coming to town."

Frank Butcher could be reunited with ex-wife Peggy Mitchell in a new EastEnders spinoff.

Sky Showbiz reports that Mike Reid and Barbara Windsor are "close" to signing a deal for a new one-off show, set in Spain.

"With Babs not feeling up to going back full-time, both stars like the idea of another short spin-off, this time in Spain," said a source. "They're about to sign any day now."

Windsor recently made a brief return to the soap but an ongoing illness has prevented her from returning full time. Reid quit in 2001 but returned for a brief spinoff called The Frank Butcher Experience in 2003.

AXED EASTENDER ADI FERREIRA IN RACE ROW

BBC bosses have been accused of institutional racism by a member of sacked EastEnders family the Ferreiras.

Ameet Chana, who plays stallholder-turned-minicab driver Adi, said the family have been discriminated against and "treated like s***" on the show.

The ousted Asian family, who joined Albert Square in June 2003, were given their marching orders earlier this month.

In a statement, an EastEnders spokesman said the move was a mutual decision between the programme makers and the actors because the characters had "run their course".

But 28-year-old Ameet said the family had been left to hang out to dry after being given boring storylines. He also revealed how co-star Ray Panthaki, who plays Ronny Ferreira, pleaded with bosses to help improve their image just weeks before they were told to go.

Ameet, who is due to leave the soap next spring, said: "I'm not afraid to admit that the Ferreira family have been treated like s***. We've been made scapegoats, discriminated against. They wouldn't do this to the Watts or Slater family.

"You can take the Ferreiras out of EastEnders. But you can't take the Asians out of the East End. There are just as many Asians in the East End as 'typical families' like the Slaters. The Ferreira family have had bad storylines and we've taken the blame for it.

"I really wanted to make it work - especially considering that the family's storylines have actually been getting better in past weeks."

Ameet, who watched rival Coronation Street scoop three gongs at the National TV Awards at London's Royal Albert Hall, also spoke of tension on the set in recent months.

The BBC1 show has faced embarrassing headlines about its stars' private lives and been criticised for its dreary storylines. And, earlier this year, its viewing figures fell to a record low of 6.4 million viewers, compared to a usual audience of up to 14 million.

Ameet said: "It has been good being a part of EastEnders but it's also been tough working on the show.

"What I can't understand is that bosses had spent two years planning the Ferreira family and getting the Asian thing right. I was told the viewers would recognise who we are and what our traditions are."

However, despite the research the family ran into immediate trouble when commentators from the Asian community pointed out how unlikely it was that a real family would have one member with a Muslim name - Tariq - and another with the Hindu name of Kareena.

"The truth of the matter is just because we weren't an immediate hit, the bosses ended up washing their hands of us," says Ameet.

The actor, who starred in hit movie Bend It Like Beckham, is due to star in two films next year.

He added: "I'm optimistic about my future. I have no regrets being on EastEnders - it's a great show.

"But I would be lying if I said I was happy leaving. In fact, I'm gutted."

Tallulah Lilac was born a few days earlier than expected at around 3pm Tuesday afternoon, weighing 7lb 13oz.

The BBC have tonight confirmed tabloid reports that Leslie Grantham has been axed from EastEnders.

The news comes just as the star is about to make his return to the soap in a one-hour special on Thursday. Grantham was handed a two-month suspension back in May after it was revealed that he participated in webcam sex sessions from his dressing room.

"All I can say is the stories are true, that he's leaving," a BBC spokesman said, refusing to elaborate any further.

Weekend newspaper reports have claimed that an "explosive" and "deadly" exit is being planned for Dirty Den early next year - and this time round his departure will be final.

The strategy to bring back former characters is part of Kathleen Hutchison's plans to revive the soap from flagging ratings. The Jacksons - dad Alan, mum Carol, Bianca, Billie, Robbie and Sonia - were one of the most popular EastEnders families in the 90s.

The newspaper reports that Carol and Bianca are to reappear as part of a New Year storyline which sees Sonia battling depression. The respective actresses may not return, however: Lindsey Coulson and Patsy Palmer have apparently turned down contracts to make a comeback.

Auditions have already begun for their replacements; BBC Radio London presenter JoAnne Good is said to be a favourite for the part of Carol.

New Moon brothers join 'EastEnders'



The two new Moon brothers will arrive in Albert Square over the New Year period, it was announced today.

Jake and Danny's "unwelcome" appearance is said to unearth "a mystery from Alfie's past." Since arriving in Walford two years ago, Alfie has managed to get his life onto the straight and narrow.

"These brooding brothers are trouble with a capital T, having spent most of their lives jumping from the frying pan into the fire," said a spokeswoman.

Jake Moon is played by Joel Beckett, best known as Dawn's domineering boyfriend Lee in cult comedy The Office. "I've watched the programme since the beginning and I'm very excited to be joining such a successful television institution," said Beckett today.

Jake Maskall, a relative newcomer, plays the part of Danny. "I've watched EastEnders from day one; it's been part of my life, almost like a second family," he said. "I feel very privileged and special being asked to join the cast, especially with the 20th anniversary approaching. It's a dream job for me."

The pair will first be seen on screen in the episode airing Thursday, December 30.

New EastEnders producer Kathleen Hutchison has wielded her hefty axe once again.

The latest character to get the chop is "hardman" Andy Hunter, played by actor Michael Higgs. Higgs was brought in to fill the "tough guy" role after Steve McFadden's (Phil Mitchell) departure but has faced criticism from fans for being "unbelievable."

His sacking comes a month after the hiring of ex Bill actor Billy Murray as a new bad boy; indeed, the BBC ominously claimed that the new character would make Andy Hunter "look like small fry."

"We thank Michael for all his hard work," said a BBC spokeswoman today, adding that Higgs would be leaving next Easter.

Higgs is just the latest actor to be dropped as part of Hutchison's shakeup of the soap; also collecting their P45s are Scarlett Johnson (Vicki Fowler), Jill Halfpenny (Kate Mitchell), all six members of the Ferreira family and Leslie Grantham (Dirty Den).

"She is a happy, quiet, content little thing," beamed new dad Dave, who revealed that Jessie went into labour while they were shopping in Selfridges. "Tallulah doesn't cry," he added. "She's as good as gold."


When asked how they chose their daughter's unusual name, Dave explained that they were inspired by Jessie's favourite film, the 1976 musical Bugsy Malone, in which actress Jodie Foster plays Jessie gave birth a gangster's moll called Tallulah. He also said that Shane Richie - Jessie's 'Enders husband Alfie Moon - had visited the £1,000-a-night hospital to wish his co-star well. Now we're just looking forward to sneaking a peek at Jessie and Dave's wedding photos, as friends say the loved-up couple plan to get married as soon as possible. They haven't revealed the date yet, but Jessie has admitted that she wants to have "loads more children" with Dave. We're guessing she's decided not to breastfeed, though, judging by the amount of powdered milk a minder was seen carrying into her flat last week.

EASTENDER Chris Parker has been SACKED following his suicide scare.

The troubled star, 21, got the boot after refusing to see the show's psychologist.

Bosses had given him indefinite leave and wanted him checked out before he returned to his role as Spencer Moon on BBC1.

But Chris, who took painkillers and tried to slash his wrists, insisted he was okay.

A show insider yesterday revealed: "Chris told producers he was keen to return because he was feeling much better.

"They insisted he see the show psychologist first — but he refused, saying he was fine. But producers decided they do not feel confident that he should return full time."

Producers will write him out using scenes he shot BEFORE last month's suicide drama at the Marriott Hotel in Westminster, London.

Chris was taken to St Thomas' Hospital. The incident came after lapdancer Lucie Clark claimed the pair invented a kiss-and-tell tale to quash rumours he is gay.

His lawyers denied 22-year-old Lucie's story — and Chris has strenuously denied he is gay.

Scriptwriters are now reworking plots to include Spencer's hurried exit and his last on-screen appearance will be early next month.

Chris, who came runner-up in the first series of Strictly Come Dancing, is the latest star to be axed by new EastEnders boss Kathleen "The Hatchet" Hutchison.

She has already given marching orders to Dirty Den, the six Ferreiras and gangster Andy Hunter.

An EastEnders spokeswoman said: "We'd like to thank Chris for all his hard work over the last two years and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Denise Van Outen to join 'EastEnders'?

Denise Van Outen is in talks to join the cast of EastEnders, according to a report in The Mirror today.

The presenter will apparently join the soap as part of a new family set to move into Albert Square.

A source told the newspaper, "She has been in for a casting meeting and everyone's very excited at the prospect of her joining. There is a specific role in mind for her and the talks went very well indeed."

The show's new executive producer, Kathleen Hutchinson, has already axed ten characters in a bid to turn around the fortunes of the soap. Denise has been described by the newspaper as "a secret weapon in the ratings war against Coronation Street."

Van Outen is best known for presenting the Big Breakfast alongside Johnny Vaughan, and has also hosted Passport to Paradise and Something for the Weekend.

They had a lot of bad luck, like Coronation Street did three or four years ago, but I can see them way up there again soon."

BBC confirms changes to production at EastEnders

The BBC's Controller Continuing Drama Series John Yorke has developed a new plan to give viewers EastEnders at its best, building upon the hard work of the team who have managed the show in recent times.

Part of the plan involves a production reshuffle with John bringing back show heavyweights including Story Advisor Tony Jordan and Head Of Production Nigel Taylor.

Executive Producer Kathleen Hutchison and Series Producer Sharon Hughff will be leaving the show having completed their task of managing this period of transition.

John Yorke said: "Kathleen has done a fantastic job of managing EastEnders during this period of change - I am very grateful to her for all her hard work and for leaving the show in such a strong position for us to build on."

Kathleen Hutchison added: "I have enjoyed my brief time at EastEnders and wish the show the very best."
