Ben benieuwd hoe lang Israëliërs zin hebben om opgeblazen te worden in hun nieuwe bufferzone. De strategie van een verlaten kale vlakte maken dichterbij de vijand is een dappere.

Wereldwijd gezichtsverlies

De gevolgen reiken volgens hem verder dan alleen de regio. Ook wereldwijd lijden de Amerikanen grootschalig gezichtsverlies, benadrukt de expert. “De positie van Amerika is ernstig verzwakt. Het land is niet langer in staat om voldoende wapens te genereren voor een eventueel conflict rond Taiwan of Zuid-Korea. Tegelijkertijd stokt de militaire steun aan Oekraïne en zijn ook leveringen aan de Baltische staten gestaakt.”

Ook op diplomatiek vlak lijkt het gezag van Washington af te nemen. Volgens De Wijk wordt de Amerikaanse president steeds minder serieus genomen. Zo is de EU volgens hem bezig om zich af te wenden van de VS. Ook wijst hij op een recent gesprek tussen Trump en de Russische president Vladimir Putin. “Waar dergelijke contacten normaal gesproken onmiddellijk leiden tot diplomatieke bewegingen, bleef het deze keer opvallend stil.”
