Court sentences Kharkiv resident with Russian citizenship to 5 years in prison for directing Russian strikes on city

In Kharkiv, a court sentenced a Russian citizen to five years in prison for collecting data on the Ukrainian Armed Forces and sending them to the Russians to help direct their strikes on the city, reported the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office on September 5.

Since the start of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, courts have tried and sentenced 382 people, including 338 who were found guilty of collaborationism, 16 — of treason, and 17 — of helping Russia direct missiles on Ukrainian territory.

According to the investigation, a 60-year-old man with Russian citizenship who lived in Kharkiv “for a long time” started working for Russia in May this year. The man is a former serviceman of the Russian Aerospace Forces; he used to be a commander of Su-24 reconnaissance aircraft team.

The Prosecutor’s Office writes that, after establishing contact with the “representative of the aggressor state,”, the man collected information about the locations of the Defense Forces and military equipment and sent this data over in the Telegram messenger with geolocation marks. He did it for free.

The man was detained in June. During the trial, he pleaded guilty.

Maar wel een forse doorbraak richting Hirnik. Het is wel duidelijk merkbaar dat de inzet van 2-3 extra brigades bij Pokrovsk het front daar gestabiliseerd heeft.

Video footage appears to show Russians killing surrendering Ukrainian soldiers
The troops emerge and stagger into the middle of the dusty track, then onto their knees, their hands placed on their heads. Seconds later, the Ukrainian drone footage shows, they lie face down, motionless, dust trailing nearby.

Video obtained exclusively by CNN, filmed during fighting late August near the embattled city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, shows an apparent execution by Russian troops of three surrendering Ukrainians, after their trench was overrun.

The incident, described by a Ukrainian official who asked for some details to be withheld to protect the identity of the unit, is part of a pattern of apparent executions, seemingly increasing in pace this year.

Ukrainian defense intelligence sources have given CNN a list of 15 cases since November, most supported by drone video or audio intercepts, in which they say surrendering Ukrainian troops were killed by the Russians on the front lines, rather than being taken prisoner.

Ukraine’s prosecutor general told CNN his office was investigating 28 such incidents since the start of the war, in which a total of 62 Ukrainian servicemembers had died.

The footage from Pokrovsk region appears to reflect the relentlessly brutal tactics of the Russian military as they continue to advance in Ukraine’s east.

Kremlin argues for ‘total freedom of information’ but defends wartime censorship
Russia must have “total freedom of information”, but only after the war in Ukraine ends, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with state news agency TASS on Friday.

“I don’t think you can restrict information,” Peskov said, noting however that “during wartime, … restrictions and censorship are justified”. While he described Russia as being “in a state of war”, despite the Russian authorities preferring not to use the term for the invasion of Ukraine, he added that once the war was over, “there should be complete freedom of information.”

Peskov also accused “even the most respected international media outlets” of “telling untruths” in their reports. “This is bad, in this respect, we must not be like them in any way,” he added, before praising TASS, which has repeatedly published Russian military propaganda, for “telling the truth in a reasoned way … both at home and abroad”.

Press freedom in Russia has been progressively wiped out in Russia since the early years of Vladimir Putin’s rule. At least 37 journalists, among them Novaya Gazeta’s Anna Politkovskaya, have been killed in the course of their work, and hundreds have been arrested over the past two decades, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) estimated in 2022.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, almost all independent media outlets in the country have been banned, and any dissenting voices have been branded “foreign agents” or “undesirable organisations”, while the media outlets that remain in the country are subject to strict military censorship. In 2024, Russia was ranked 162nd out of 180 countries on RSF’s Press Freedom Index.

Under a decade-old law, any organisation that displeases the Kremlin can simply be classified an “undesirable” organisation, immediately compelling it to dissolve itself as a legal entity in Russia. More than two-thirds of the organisations deemed “undesirable” have been given the designation since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in early 2022 — among them Novaya Gazeta Europe.

Zelenskyy: Around 6,000 Russian Casualties in Russia's Kursk Region
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy summed up the results of the first month of the Ukrainian operation in Russia's Kursk region. He also appealed to partners to provide Kyiv with more weapons.

Zelenskyy stated this during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (Ramstein format) at Ramstein Air Base.

“Today marks one month since our army’s operation began in the Kursk region of Russia. This is the borderland from which Putin was preparing to expand the war into Ukrainian territory, he was preparing to launch a new offensive against our city of Sumy,” said Zelenskyy. “We’ve turned the tables and are pushing the war into Russia through our counteroffensive. Today, we control an area of more than thirteen hundred square kilometers in the Kursk region. And this includes one hundred settlements."

Zelenskyy noted that during the first month of this operation “the Russian forces have lost about 6,000 soldiers killed and wounded in Kursk only and other tens of thousands of Russian troops in other war zones.”

While addressing partners, he stressed that Ukraine is working with minimal weaponry and needs sufficient supply in order to get Russia out of Ukraine.

“You all know that we are operating with a minimum of weaponry. Yes, we are grateful for every support package that is provided to Ukraine from you, from your countries. But we need more weapons to drive Russian forces off our land and especially in the Donetsk region,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

Next, Zelenskyy urged partners to be more active in their work on providing air defense. He then called on the allies regarding the importance of approving the use of long-range weapons.

“Now we hear that your long-range policy has not changed, but we see changes in the ATACMS, Storm Shadows and Scalps, a shortage of missiles and cooperation. And this applies even to our territory, which is occupied by Russia, including Crimea. We think it is wrong that there are such steps. We need to have this long-range capability not only on the occupied territory of Ukraine, but also on the Russian territory so that Russia is motivated to seek peace,” he said.

12 Hours of Power Daily in Ukraine’s Best Winter Scenario – Energy Experts
An energy expert said Russia’s attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure means that Ukraine would have 12 hours of power in the upcoming winter in the best-case scenario, or four hours in the worst.

Yuriy Korolchuk, an expert at the Institute of Energy Strategies, said long blackouts between 12 and 20 hours daily are expected this upcoming winter in Ukraine due to damages to the energy infrastructure.

In the best-case scenario, Korolchuk told 24Kanal that Ukrainians will likely have access to electricity for 12 hours daily if eight to nine nuclear power plant (NPP) units work under normal capacity, the winter won’t be too harsh, and if Ukraine can restore 3 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity out of the 6 GW damaged – likely excluding those destroyed by Russian strikes.

However, he said it might only be four hours if the winter is harsh, more facilities are damaged, only six to seven NPP units are functioning, and only 0.2 GW is restored by winter.

Serhii Nahornyak, a member of the Energy Committee at Ukraine’s parliament, told 24Kanal that there’d likely be 10 hours of blackouts daily if the temperature doesn’t drop below -10°C (14°F).

Since March, Russia has conducted nine massive missile strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, damaging and destroying several power plants and reducing Ukraine’s generation capacity.

A Kyiv Post analysis established that Ukraine had 36 GW of actual generation capacity prior to the 2022 invasion. However, as of July, the number likely dropped to less than 10 GW due to power plants being damaged, destroyed or occupied.

At the June 2024 Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine’s peak energy consumption in winter was 18 GW. The former CEO of Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s transmission operator, claimed in June that summer generally consumes 40 to 45 percent less power than winter.

Ukraine has suffered from intermittent blackouts – at times with only two hours of electricity daily – throughout this summer.

The Ukrainian Air Force is testing a domestic analog of the UMPK kit to enable Ukrainian aircraft to carry out long-range bombing strikes against the invaders.

A short video of testing of the new weapon was published on the “Combat Aviation of Ukraine” Telegram channel.

The footage shows that a Su-24M strike aircraft is being used to test the Ukrainian glide bomb.

The Telegram channel claims that during this flight, it is escorted by a Su-27UB two-seat operational conversion trainer, from which video recording is conducted.

“The bomber is performing a test flight to test a new guided bomb,” said in the Telegram channel.
