Ja, de medaillespiegel. Een commercieel gedrocht wellicht en misschien zelfs wel iets wat sommige landen op hun eigen manier naar hun hand proberen te zetten. Maar uiteindelijk toch ook gewoon de maatstaf. WIJ willen in de Top 10 eindigen. Daar heb je vooral G O U D - Goud voor nodig. Amerika wil China verslaan. Gebeurde vier jaar geleden pas op de allerlaatste dag. En wat doet het gastland? U kunt het hier volgen. Ik zal elke avond de medaillspiegel updaten. Zwitserland en Zweden is op zich nog niet zo slecht - die scoren natuurlijk beter in de winter, maar niet bizar veel beter dan in de zomer over het algemeen, omdat de Zweden vaak toch vooral achter de Noren eindigen op de latten en in alpineskiën niet heel bijzonder zijn. Oostenrijk is wel echt een heel zwak land in de zomerspelen, die hebben vaak moeite om uberhaupt aan medailles te komen.quote:

Canada wordt nu geholpen door McIntosh, maar hebben ook al kansen moeten laten liggen die er echt wel zijn. Maar Canada is sinds de introductie van showsporten en shorttrack wel een van de toplanden in de winter en in de zomer zal dat niet zo zijn.
Groot-Brittannië is dan weer omgekeerd: Dat is van de toplanden in de zomer wel echt het zwakste winterland. Ja, en Australië ook niet bijzonder, maar daar is het nogal warm.

PARIJS (ANP) - Nederland heeft dankzij de gouden medaille van zeilster Marit Bouwmeester de negende plaats in het medailleklassement van de Olympische Spelen steviger in handen genomen. TeamNL behaalde tot dusverre zeven keer goud, vijf keer zilver en vier keer brons.
De 36-jarige Bouwmeester stelde een dag voor de afsluitende medalrace de eindzege in de Ilca 6-klasse, voorheen de Laser Radial, al veilig. Haar medaille wordt pas na de medalrace, waar ze nog wel aan moet meedoen, van dinsdag officieel aan het totaal toegevoegd.
China nam de eerste plek in het medailleklassement weer over van de Verenigde Staten. Na 172 onderdelen staan de Chinezen op 21 gouden plakken, de Verenigde Staten op negentien. Australië is derde met dertien keer goud, gevolgd door Frankrijk (twaalf), Zuid-Korea (elf), Groot-Brittannië (tien), Japan (tien) en Italië (negen).
Achter Nederland maakt Duitsland de top tien compleet met zes gouden medailles.
