Houthi rebels mistakenly targeted a tanker from an undisclosed country on Jan. 12 that was carrying Russian oil through the Gulf of Aden, Reuters reported, citing the U.K.-based maritime security company Ambrey.
The Houthis are an Iran-backed militant group located in Yemen. Following Israel's invasion of Gaza, the Houthis began launching attacks against shipping vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Reuters reported, citing sources from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organization, that Houthis had fired a missile at the ship, which landed in the water some distance away and caused no damage or casualties.
Several small boats also tailed the cargo ship, but no information was provided if a breaching or naval interception was attempted.
The militaries of the U.S. and U.K. launched strikes against multiple targets in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen on Jan. 11 in response to Houthi attacks on Red Sea ships, U.S. President Joe Biden said.
Russia, which has close ties with the Houthi benefactors Iran, requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the following day.

Russia is at risk of running out of troops as the Ukraine war wages on, with a former commander describing his country as being in a “very bad way”.
Igor Girkin, writing from his prison cell, suggested that Russia’s forces are light on numbers and a “broad offensive” is no longer planned for 2024.
Girkin, who played a crucial role in the annexation of Crimea in 2014, argued that Putin would need to mobilise civilians to bulk up the army.
“There will be no mobilization yet—until the 'elections' for sure,” he wrote in Russian on his Telegram account.

He added: “In turn, means that in the spring we will have no one and nothing with which to attack (and if mobilization is not carried out in the spring, then there will be no one in the summer).
“A broad offensive (judging by the rhetoric) is no longer planned—everything is focused on 'waiting' on the defensive until Ukraine falls apart on its own or goes to negotiations,” Girkin speculated.
Girkin, who also goes by the alias Igor Ivanovich Strelkov, is currently under arrest on charges of extremism.
He was previously dismissed from the Russian Army after being found guilty of shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
The plane carried 298 passengers and crew, who all perished when a missile struck the aircraft as it flew over the Donbas region on July 17 2014.
In September 2022, the Russian President declared a partial mobilisation of reservists to help fight in Ukraine.
He also unveiled plans in July 2023 to raise the maximum mobilisation age to 70.
The Russian President, who is 71, will even accept soldiers who have already been discharged.
It will ensure retired reservists can serve until they are 60 and junior officials can also be recalled until they turn 55.
US intelligence said last month that Russia’s heavy losses in the war have resulted in the relaxing of recruitment standards.

Men are also apparently subjected to the humiliating searches, according to Russian news agencies.
Wildberries, which is said to employ some 32,000 workers throughout Russia and the former Soviet Union, is owned by Tatyana Bakalchuk, a 47-year-old entrepreneur who is considered Russia’s first self-made woman billionaire.
According to reports, Bakalchuk had an estimated net worth of $13.3 billion in 2021.
Last month, Russian state-run media agency TASS reported that workers at the company launched a nationwide work slowdown in response to a new company policy that made them liable for any items that were returned because they were defective or because they were sent to the wrong address.
“We will go to work so as not to violate the terms of labor contracts, but we won’t hand over goods to buyers,” the head of a social media group which represents Wildberries employees told the Russian-language version of Forbes.
According to the report, one Wildberries employee had their wage reduced by 500,000 rubles — or the equivalent of $6,581 — as a result of the new system.
The semi-work stoppage compelled the company to suspend the new regulations, according to reports.
Since Vladimir Putin ordered his military to invade Ukraine more than a year ago, hundreds of Western companies have pulled up stakes and left Russia altogether.
The Russian economy has been battered by Western sanctions imposed by nations that are no longer buying its key exports, including oil and natural gas.
Oleg Deripaska, a billionaire oligarch, said last month that Russia was running out of cash.
“There will be no money next year, we need foreign investors,” Deripaska, who made his fortune in the raw materials market, told an economic conference.
Tensions between the US and Russia were further ratcheted up this month when Russian authorities detained Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, on charges of espionage.
The US government has declared Gershkovich “wrongfully detained.”

A prominent liberal priest faces expulsion from the Russian Orthodox church for refusing to read out a prayer asking God to guide Russia to victory over Ukraine.
In a verdict published on Saturday, a church court said Aleksiy Uminsky should be “expelled from holy orders” for violating his priestly oath. The decision was forwarded for approval to Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian church who strongly backs President Vladimir Putin.
The case shows how the church is clamping down on internal dissent as it throws its support behind Putin and his “special military operation” in Ukraine, which is now nearing the end of its second year.
The church court said Uminsky had broken his oath by refusing to read the “Prayer for Holy Rus” – an archaic name for Russia – which Kirill has made compulsory at church services.
“Behold, those who want to fight have taken up arms against Holy Rus, hoping to divide and destroy its united people,” said the prayer first pronounced by Kirill on 25 September 2022, seven months into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Arise, o God, to help your people and grant us victory through your power.“
Dozens of Russian Orthodox priests have been punished for challenging the church’s line on the war – for example, by reading out prayers for peace instead of victory – according to Christians against War, an online group that has documented their cases.
Uminsky was the most prominent casualty so far. He had served for 30 years as senior priest at the church of the life-giving holy trinity in Moscow before being abruptly fired this month, just before Orthodox Christmas, in a move that paved the way for Saturday’s verdict. He was renowned for his hospice work for dying children and adults, and led the funeral for former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev in 2022.
In an interview last November, Uminsky said that the language of war and the “special military operation” was “in no way compatible” with church liturgy.
He encouraged believers to seek out priests who “pray more for peace than for victory and understand that any victory is always a pyrrhic victory in these wars … In modern wars any victory is almost always equivalent to self-destruction.”
Ksenia Luchenko, an expert on the Russian Orthodox church at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said the verdict against Uminsky was unsound because the prayer he was accused of refusing to read had not been considered and approved by the highest body of the church, the Holy Synod.
She said his punishment was “evidence of Patriarch Kirill’s usurpation of power in the Russian Orthodox church and violation of its statutory documents“.
Uminsky has not commented in public on his firing. The church court said the decision to expel him was taken in his absence after he failed to attend despite being summoned three times.
A total of 11,627 Orthodox believers have signed an open letter in his support since he was removed as priest of the Holy Trinity church and replaced by Andrei Tkachov, a vocal champion of the war.
They said the decision had caused them great pain and would deprive thousands of people of spiritual support.

"Firstly, there are big doubts that schools in Donbass had such toilets. And secondly, according to Rosstat, a quarter of Russians have no centralised sewerage system, using cesspools and septic tanks."
He also wrote that "it is hard to imagine anything more gender-neutral than a backyard toilet of the 'latrine' type".
