The Motocross World Championship is a worldwide motocross series sanctioned by the F.I.M.. It was inaugurated in 1957 using a 500 cc engine displacement formula. In 1962 a 250cc class was added and in 1975, a 125cc class was introduced. Prior to 1957, the championship was known as the European Championship. In 2002, the F.I.M. changed the displacement formulas to reflect the changes in engine technology and as a move towards environmentally friendlier four-stroke engines. The new MX1 class became the premier class, allowing two-stroke engines of up to 250cc and four-stroke engines of up to 450cc. The MX2 class allowed two-stroke engines of up to 125cc and four-stroke motors of up to 250cc. The MX3 class allowed two-stroke engines of up to 500cc and four stroke engines of up to 650cc.

For example, the Supercross races are heavily advertised and televised motorsports events held within major cities. Also supercross tracks are more technical, not as fast as motocross but with a much higher difficulty level, further adding to the injury risk factor. While growing consistently since the '70s, in the early part of the 21st Century Supercross' popularity really took off. In the United States, Supercross races today are the second most popular form of motorsport (behind NASCAR racing). The American Motorcyclist Association awards three Supercross Championship Champs each year. They are Supercross Champion which until 2006 was referred to as 250 class, Supercross Lites East (which was the 125 East) Champion, and Supercross Lites West Champion. World Supercross Champions are named by other racing organizations around the world. Supercross racing classifications were governed by the displacement of the motorcycle's engine until 2006. In the past, Championships have been awarded in 125cc (also known as "MX2"), 250cc ("MX1"), and 500cc displacement levels (also known as "MX3"). The 250cc Champion has always been generally considered to be the most prestigious.

Riola Sardo was tough but familiar ground for MXGP: the venue is a regular pre-season testing site and has hosted rounds of the series for the last two years. The climate was stable, providing pleasant spring temperatures. Herlings grabbed championship points for classifying 3rd in the Saturday RAM Qualification race.
On Sunday the Dutchman did not make the best of starts but rallied in his preferred terrain to take 2nd place behind Jorge Prado in the first moto. The second outing saw the #84 needing to recover from an early race setback that put him down to 9th. A typically barreling performance dragged him by Maxime Renaux and into the runner-up slot with two laps to go: the pass meant overall victory.
Jeffrey is now just one career win away from equaling the all-time record. His first came in 2010 while 15-years-old at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands at Valkenswaard. All 100 have been earned while in Red Bull KTM colors and with either KTM 250 SX-F or 450 SX-F machinery.
In MX2 Andrea Adamo rued some so-so starts to take two top six results and 6th overall on the day. The classification keeps the Italian 4th in the championship. Teammate Liam Everts had a crash in the first MX2 moto that lowered him to 9th. He started brightly but dropped to 8th in the second dash for 9th overall.
MXGP makes a welcome return to Frauenfeld for the first Grand Prix of Switzerland since 2018 as round three of the calendar will take place on Easter Monday.
Jeffrey Herlings, 2nd and 2nd for 1st overall in MXGP: “A 100th GP! Amazing. It was tough because the track was fast and it wasn’t easy to pass, the nearer you got to the front the harder it was! When the other riders were getting a bit tired I was still in good shape and could keep pushing. I need to work on my starts. I have been focusing on my motos but I know it’s a weak point and it needs to be improved. Once we can get that dialled in then life will be easier. I’m excited to see how the track will be in Switzerland.”
Andrea Adamo, 5th and 6th for 6th overall in MX2: “A bit of an up-and-down day but in the end quite a solid result. We are here to make the podium at every GP but this is one of the toughest tracks on the calendar. I didn’t make any mistakes and my riding wasn’t bad although we need better starts. I’m sure we’ll do better in Switzerland.”
Liam Everts, 9th and 8th for 9th overall in MX2: “A very difficult weekend for me. My feeling was a bit better on Sunday to be honest and that showed when I ran in 4th and then 5th. I was comfortable until I had a pretty big one a few laps before the end. I was lucky to rescue P9. My start was better in the second moto but I’m not sure why I went back to 8th. I wasn’t tired on the bike and didn’t feel any fatigue but I could not get any flow on the track. We’ll need to anaylyze why. The moto just ended with P8. A difficult day. I want to regroup and come back better in Switzerland.”

The novelty is that this season, NOS will also cover the FIM Women's Motocross World Championship with the current Dutch World Champion, Nancy van de Ven.

In het Belgische Lommel lopen Roan en Kay vol trots door de werkplaats van Husqvarna. Bij dit fabrieksteam hebben de talentvolle coureurs de beschikking over alle professionele hulp die ze zich maar wensen. "Als ik hier ben", zo zegt Van de Moosdijk, "dan geniet ik elke keer weer."
De werkplaats is dan ook het walhalla voor de motorcrossliefhebber. Het is een volledig witte, haast steriele ruimte waar monteurs op hoog niveau sleutelen aan de motors. Bij de werkbanken is alles keurig geordend: banden, moertjes, uitlaten, gashendels, noem maar op. "Het is een geweldig gevoel om zo'n goed team achter je te hebben", zegt Kay de Wolf.
Dat team moet ervoor zorgen dat de coureurs zo goed mogelijk presteren. De lat ligt hoog, net zoals de ambities van Roan en Kay. "Dit is mijn laatste jaar in de MX2", vertelt Van de Moosdijk. Ik heb al een paar keer op het podium gestaan, maar ik smacht naar een algehele overwinning. Volgend jaar hoop ik op een fabrieksteam in de MXGP. Vanwege mijn bouw kom ik denk ik beter uit de verf op een zwaardere motor."
Kay de Wolf windt er geen doekjes om en gaat voor de absolute top. "Ik wil dit seizoen in de top drie eindigen", zegt hij over zijn ambities. "Maar mijn ultieme droom is om binnen vijf jaar wereldkampioen te worden. Ik geef niet op voordat ik dit bereikt heb."
Om hun dromen waar te maken, moeten beide talenten flink aan de bak. "Het is heel hard werken", beaamt Kay. "Je bent er 365 dagen per jaar mee bezig. Het is op je eten letten, op tijd slapen en heel veel trainen."
Beide coureurs zijn dan ook zowat getrouwd met hun motor. "Verliefd is een groot woord, maar het voelt wel als n", zo verklapt Roan. "Je maakt er veel uren op, dus ik hou wel van mijn motor ja." En Kay grapt: "Mijn motor is lekker rustig, want die kan ik uitzetten als ik geen gezeur wil."
De Wolf miste vorig weekend tijdens de GP in Sardini op een haar na de eindoverwinning, maar staat knap tweede in de strijd om het wereldkampioenschap. Van de Moosdijk, die hele de winter geblesseerd was, begint wat aarzelend met een zevende plek maar heeft de top vijf binnen bereik. Tijdens het Paasweekend komen beide heren in actie tijdens de GP in Zwitserland.

Er leek niks aan de hand maar in ronde 13 ging Benistant onderuit en verloor een plek aan Adamo. Niet veel later viel ook de leidende Geerts en hij zag zijn 10 seconden voorsprong op Roan als sneeuw voor de zon verdwijnen.
De Wolf sloot aan bij Adamo, Benistant en Geerts en ging ze alle drie voorbij in de slotfase.
Titelkandidaat Geerts werd uiteindelijk slechts zevende.

The distinctive red soil of Agueda staged the FIM Motocross World Championship once more but provided the riders and teams of the MXGP and MX2 classes with a reversed course and other modifications to the quick, jumpy and relentless layout. Agueda has been a steadfast and consistent date on the MXGP slate for the competition’s most westerly European appointment.
Red Bull KTM wheeled out the KTM 450 SX-F and KTM 250 SX-F factory equipment in Portugal and with both wins and/or podium finishes for all of their currently active rider roster in the four previous rounds. In fact, the squad was back to full strength and happy to welcome Sacha Coenen to Grand Prix duty after the teenage Belgian had recovered sufficiently from his injured shoulder.
Two rounds after Jeffrey Herlings crested the three-figure barrier in the Grand Prix record books, the five-times world champion was back to his attack on the sport’s statistics. A 3rd place in the first moto (finishing two seconds from the winner) despite arm-pump was forgotten with a rampaging performance and victorious run in the second outing. Jeffrey is now one GP triumph away from the outright #1 status in the world championship record books. In the framework of 2023 Herlings is 2nd in the MXGP championship table, staring at a slender 17 point deficit to Jorge Prado with the red plate.
MXGP decamps a short distance and across the border for round six. The Grand Prix of Spain will take place at Intu Xanadu Arroyomolinos next weekend.

Across a rough and rutty hard-packed course south of the capital, Herlings was dominant with his KTM 450 SX-F for his second triumph in a row, his third of the season, a first 1-1 of the year and the 102nd of a career that began in Red Bull KTM colors in 2010.
•Jeffrey Herlings is victorious for the second time in a week and the fourth time on Spanish soil to move to within 6 points of the MXGP world championship lead.

The climate for qualification was hot and sunny and the weather remained stable and therefore demanding on Sunday. Jeffrey Herlings came to Spain on the positive momentum of his victory from the Portuguese GP the previous weekend. The win had brought Herlings level with the all-time record of 101 career triumphs, and the Dutchman already boasts the most checkered flags by any rider and well over 7000 career points accumulated. He took 2nd position in the RAM Qualification Heat, missing P1 by just one second. In the first moto he patiently set his pace and moved up from 3rd to 1st by the midway stage. The second outing was similar and he made three positions in typically attacking style to head the pack by the final ten minutes of the moto.
Herlings’ place in motocross history is guaranteed but for the narrative of 2023 he now has three wins from six and five podium appearances. The gap to Jorge Prado and the red plate is just six points.
Andrea Adamo started on the fringe of the MX2 top ten with his teammates Liam Everts and Sacha Coenen in the first moto. The Italian improved his pace to take 5th as Everts completed a lonely race in 7th and Coenen 9th. In the second moto the trio launched further forward and Adamo had a consistent run to 3rd: ensuring his third trophy from the last four Grands Prix. Everts improved to 6th for the same overall ranking while Coenen gained more important race mileage with 11th and 9th overall. Adamo is 2nd in the championship standings, 48 points behind Jago Geerts.
The Grand Prix of France will turn to the steep hillside of Villars sous Ecot for round seven on May 20th-21st.
Jeffrey Herlings, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MXGP: “I’m super-happy to improve my moto wins total and take the GP win record outright. The rest of the guys have really stepped it up this season – Jorge is riding awesome – and they are really pushing, so I did not expect this would come so soon. It is still anyone’s game on any particular Sunday. To have won three from six until now is something I wouldn’t have imagined. My starts got a bit better, not great though, and top five positions were enough today. In the second moto I could always see a leader in front of me, so I could rely on that, even though it was tough to pass here because there was only really one fast line. In the end I could control the moto. I enjoyed the fans here; they were amazing for their home heroes. I hope I can win a couple more world titles in my career and then I’ll lay on the beach knowing I’ve done enough!”
Andrea Adamo, 5th and 3rd for 3rd overall in MX2: “I was happy to find my way to pass riders to reach 5th in the first moto because my start was not good enough. It was not easy to overtake. You had to wait for some mistakes by the others. The second moto start was better and I made it to 3rd in the first laps but after that, well, Simon was just faster today and made a big gap for the win. We go home with P3, which is a solid result but we need to try and start at the front and see how it can be better. Across a season you need to be fast, smart and consistent. It is not about being fast for a couple of motos. You need to always be ‘there’ and that’s what I am trying to do.”
Liam Everts, 7th and 6th for 6th overall in MX2: “It was a weekend of catching-up because I missed my starts at this GP. I was being too gentle and cautious on the first laps with the other riders and that cost me a better result. The speed was good, especially in the second part of the second moto. I liked the track: deep lines and very technical. It suited me and it was good fun out there but I’m a bit disappointed not to have finished higher.”
Sacha Coenen, 9th and 11th for 9th overall in MX2: “I was feeling better on the track and the bike today. My first start was not great but I worked my way up to 9th and that was OK for the short time I have been back and I’m working for top ten results at the moment. The second race was really good and I was up to 3rd but after twenty minutes I made a few mistakes. I had to re-group and finished 11th. Not amazing but my speed is getting better and I’m finding more flow on the bike. We’ll keep on working and see how it goes in France.”

"Ik kan er weinig woorden voor vinden. Dit vat mijn carrire in zekere zin samen", reageert Herlings. "We pakken het record van overwinningen, maar dan krijgen we weer een blessure en een tegenslag. Ik ben blij dat ik niet geopereerd hoef te worden en ik hoop zo snel mogelijk weer bij mijn team terug te zijn en weer te kunnen racen."

De 28-jarige Brabander kwam tijdens de eerste manche van de MXGP-wedstrijd in het Duitse Teutschenthal hard ten val. Herlings was bezig aan een goede eerste manche en was na een fel duel onder anderen WK-leider Jorge Prado gepasseerd.
Tegen het einde van de sessie ging de Brabander over de kop. Met pijn aan de nek kon Herlings de race nog wel vervolgen, hij eindigde op de 20ste plaats. Prado pakte de winst. Een eerste scan op het circuit liet al zien dat Herlings waarschijnlijk zijn nekwervel had gebroken, een MRI-scan op maandag bevestigde de vrees.
Herlings maakte in maart zijn rentree bij de GP van Argentini, nadat hij een jaar aan de kant had gestaan met een gebroken hiel. De Brabander boekte vorige maand zijn 102de zege in de MXGP, meer dan elke andere motocrosser.Cancellara; "Tweede worden is gemakkelijker dan eerste worden"

Bogers will debut on the Fantic XXF 450 at the MXGP of Sardegna in Riola Sardo (6th and 7th April).
Brian Bogers scored his first GP podiums in the MX2 class in 2016 and 2017 and made an early switch to the premier class in 2018 at only 21 years of age. After successfully overcoming a string of injuries, it was in 2022 when the Dutchman enjoyed his best season so far. WK Motorcross
Het Wereldkampioenschap motorcross is een kampioenschap dat georganiseerd wordt door de Fdration Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). Het werd voor de eerste keer gehouden in 1957 en ontstond uit een Europees kampioenschap dat vanaf 1952 gehouden werd.
De Belg Stefan Everts is recordhouder met tien wereldtitels in totaal, de Italiaan Antonio Cairoli is recordhouder met zeven wereldtitels in de 'koningsklasse' en de Nederlander Jeffrey Herlings is recordhouder wat betreft GP-zeges met 103 overwinningen.
MXGP
De MXGP is een klasse in de motorcross voor motoren met een maximale cilinderinhoud van 250cc (tweetaktmotor) of 450 cc (viertaktmotor). De klasse werd eerst als MX1 samen met de MX2 en MX3 ingevoerd in 2003.
Het is de meest prestigieuze klasse in de motorcross, waar de beste rijders in aantreden en die de meeste media-aandacht krijgt. Onder andere Stefan Everts, Jol Smets, Mickal Pichon en Joshua Coppins traden aan in de MX1-klasse. Het is ook gebruikelijk dat de goede rijders in de lichtere MX2-klasse na een aantal jaren de overstap maken naar MXGP.
MX2
De MX2 is een klasse in de motorcross voor motoren met een maximale cilinderinhoud van 125cc (tweetaktmotor) of 250 cc (viertaktmotor). De klasse werd samen met de MX1 en MX3 ingevoerd in 2003, als lichtste van de drie is ze de opvolger van de vroegere 125cc-klasse. Tevens worden in deze klasse de nieuwe talenten opgeleid. Vanaf 2010 werd een leeftijdsgrens ingevoerd. De bovengrens is 23 jaar.

Maar eens een update. Inmiddels 9 GP's verreden. Gajser en Prado gaan nek aan nek. Herlings is laatste wedstrijden goed op dreef, vorige week zijn eerste GP van het seizoen gewonnen. Na zijn zege in Letland een week geleden - de eerste voor de Nederlandse motocrosser in ruim een jaar - moest hij nu Tim Gasjer voor laten gaan in de Grand Prix van Itali. In Letland waren de rollen nog omgedraaid.
De 29-jarige Herlings eindigde in de eerste manche in Maggiora als derde achter Gasjer en de Spaanse wereldkampioen Jorge Prado. Hij en Prado zaten rondenlang aan het achterwiel van Gasjer, maar de Sloveen gaf geen krimp en hield de leiding tot het einde vast.
In de tweede manche ging de strijd tussen Gasjer en Herlings, aangezien Prado bij de start ten val kwam bij een crash met meerdere rijders en geblesseerd op moest geven.
Gasjer pakte opnieuw de koppositie. Dit keer lukte het Herlings wel om er voorbij te komen, waarna hij met ruime voorsprong (11 seconden) de manche op zijn naam schreef en tweede werd in de grand prix-klassering, voor de Zwitser Jeremy Seewer.
Voor Gasjer was het zijn tweede zege van het seizoen. Door het uitvallen van zijn Spaanse rivaal Prado vergrootte hij zijn voorsprong in de wereldtitelstrijd naar 34 punten. Herlings staat na tien van de twintig grands prix derde op 71 punten van Gasjer.
De andere Nederlanders Calvin Vlaanderen, Brians Bogers en Glenn Coldenhoff werden respectievelijk vierde, vijfde en zesde in Maggiora.

Mooie 3e plek, en denk ook niet dat NL Australie had kunnen verslaan, maar toch wel klein beetje gevoel van what if.
Herlings gevallen in 1e manche en daar toch zeker aantal punten laten liggen, Kay lag ook voor Langenfelder en uiteindelijk erachter en Coldenhoff sowieso al met de val in 1e manche 3 punten laten liggen en in 2e manche natuurlijk meteen kansloos na die val.Ik maakte me even zorgen toen bleek dat het niet als gevolg van valpartij was.quote:

Herlings zit sinds oktober vorig jaar in de lappenmand nadat hij zijn kruisband scheurde bij een wedstrijd in Valkenswaard. Hij onderging een operatie en het herstel verloopt voorspoedig. Maar hij is nog niet zover dat een rentree op de motorfiets mogelijk is in Argentini.
