Dat zou er op kunnen duiden dat men nu ook (meer) personen zonder symptomen kan testen, omdat de testcapaciteit is uitgebreid, of omdat er minder gevallen met symptomen zijn.

China sprak bij bekendmaking van de getallen trouwens telkens over "new cases of pneumonia caused by new coronavirus infection", dat impliceerde reeds dat symptoomvrije gevallen niet meegerekend werden.

Ik denk dat de officiële WHO benaming niet geholpen heeft: "2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease", wat ook neerkomt op longontsteking. Misschien is dat een overblijfsel uit het verleden (of uit de medische praktijk): bij besmettingen werden vrij zelden lab tests gebruikt om het specifieke virus of de bacterie te identificeren. En bij nieuwe infecties moesten zo'n tests eerst ontwikkeld worden, wat lang kon duren. Dus baseerde men zich vaak op de symptomen, scans, rontgenfoto's etc, en het ziekteverloop.

Dit probeem heb je ook bij andere ziektes. In 2018 bvb werden 137 gevallen van polio in acht landen gemeld. Maar waarschijnlijk wordt hoogstens 0.5% opgemerkt, omdat polio besmetting meestal geen symptomen veroorzaakt en verlamming slechts in 0.5% van gevallen optreedt.

des reden meer om niet alle fabrieken in China laten staan. Paar in Afrika en paar in Zuid-Amerika zouden ook moeten staan.

Kuwait announced a travel ban to China on Jan 29, with ambassador to China, Samih Johar Hayat, calling on Kuwaitis to refrain from visiting China unless truly necessary, reported Dubai-based newspaper Khaleej Times.

Qatar Airways announced on Feb 1 it would suspend flights to mainland China until further notice

On Sunday, three new cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed in Singapore, all with no recent travel history to China. This takes the total number of cases in Singapore to 43. Of these, six are in critical condition in intensive care.

Is het niet zo dat er voor Hubei al gerapporteerd wordt over NCIP (mensen die geïnfecteerd zijn en longontsteking hebben)? De cijfers daar zijn eigenlijk al niet te vergelijken met die buiten Hubei.

The British man visited Singapore on business from 20 to 23 January, before staying at a chalet in the Alpine resort area of Les Contamines-Montjoie near Mont Blanc.

He flew back to the UK from Geneva on 28 January, easyJet confirmed.

Four adults and a nine-year-old child were subsequently diagnosed with the virus after coming into contact with him. They are not in a serious condition.

The group were staying at this chalet in the French Alpine ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie
EasyJet said in a statement on Monday that health officials are trying to trace other passengers on flight EZS8481 to London Gatwick who might be at risk.

Om eerlijk te zijn zal het me aan m'n reet roesten wat er in Noord-Korea gebeurd met het virus. Het halve land ligt regelmatig al op sterven dus nog een virusje erbij zal weinig uitmaken, laat staan dat wij er nog iets van meekrijgen.

Heb je niet toestemming nodig in Noord-Korea om uberhaupt je dorp uit te mogen? Er is bijna geen transport in Noord-Korea. De hoofdstad is nog enigzins modern (soort van USSR modern) maar de rest van het land zijn gewoon dorpen waar mensen hun eigen eten moeten verbouwen.

Met zo weinig reizigers zal het heel lang duren...

Dit virus is geen bedreiging voor het regime in NK. De mortaliteit is gering, zeker voor gezonde volwassenen. Dat er vooral ouderen en zwakkeren door omkomen is voor het regime een voordeel. Er is geen enkele reden in te grijpen of het naar buiten te brengen voor het NK regime.

Indeed's 1,000 Irish staff told to stay home

Recruitment website Indeed has told its 1,000 Ireland-based employees to work from home to prevent the potential spread of the coronavirus, the company said on Monday.

A spokesman for Indeed said one of their employees in Singapore may have been exposed to coronavirus after their family members visited a facility caring for a coronavirus patient.

Since some employees who visited Singapore have recently visited Indeed’s Dublin and Sydney offices, they are asking all employees in Dublin and Sydney to work from home until they have received confirmation, the spokesman said.

The company said there were no confirmed cases of infection, and the move was out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of their employees. — Michelle Gooden-Jones
