Dat zou er op kunnen duiden dat men nu ook (meer) personen zonder symptomen kan testen, omdat de testcapaciteit is uitgebreid, of omdat er minder gevallen met symptomen zijn.

China sprak bij bekendmaking van de getallen trouwens telkens over "new cases of pneumonia caused by new coronavirus infection", dat impliceerde reeds dat symptoomvrije gevallen niet meegerekend werden.

Ik denk dat de officiële WHO benaming niet geholpen heeft: "2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease", wat ook neerkomt op longontsteking. Misschien is dat een overblijfsel uit het verleden (of uit de medische praktijk): bij besmettingen werden vrij zelden lab tests gebruikt om het specifieke virus of de bacterie te identificeren. En bij nieuwe infecties moesten zo'n tests eerst ontwikkeld worden, wat lang kon duren. Dus baseerde men zich vaak op de symptomen, scans, rontgenfoto's etc, en het ziekteverloop.

Dit probeem heb je ook bij andere ziektes. In 2018 bvb werden 137 gevallen van polio in acht landen gemeld. Maar waarschijnlijk wordt hoogstens 0.5% opgemerkt, omdat polio besmetting meestal geen symptomen veroorzaakt en verlamming slechts in 0.5% van gevallen optreedt.

Ook merken als Samsung en LG kunnen in de problemen komen. Het zijn wel Zuid-Koreaanse merken (net als Hyundaii en Kia) maar ze laten wel veel onderdelen in China maken.

Het is prima om te "consuminderen" maar dat neemt niet weg dat het wel gevolgen gaat hebben als China dit niet kan indammen.

des reden meer om niet alle fabrieken in China laten staan. Paar in Afrika en paar in Zuid-Amerika zouden ook moeten staan.

Travel advisories have been issued by Kuwait and Qatar for Singapore, urging citizens of both countries to defer travel plans unless necessary.

Kuwait was the first country to advise citizens not to travel to Singapore after the island raised the 'Dorscon' level to orange on Friday, state broadcaster, Channel News Asia reports.

According to the Kuwait News Agency, the Kuwaiti Embassy in Singapore urged citizens to delay travel plans to Singapore, and called on Kuwaiti citizens to leave the country.

Qatar's foreign affairs ministry issued a similar statement on Sunday from the country's embassy in Singapore advising all Qatari citizens wishing to travel to Singapore to "wait until the conditions related to the Coronavirus calms, except for the most urgent need.''

Citizens of both countries were advised to take necessary precautions, and to follow instructions issued by Singapore authorities through the Ministry of Health website.

They were also advised to avoid crowded places and malls and to contact the Qatari embassy in cases of emergency at +65 6593 9900, or the Kuwaiti embassy at +65 9834 4022.

Kuwait announced a travel ban to China on Jan 29, with ambassador to China, Samih Johar Hayat, calling on Kuwaitis to refrain from visiting China unless truly necessary, reported Dubai-based newspaper Khaleej Times.

Qatar Airways announced on Feb 1 it would suspend flights to mainland China until further notice

On Sunday, three new cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed in Singapore, all with no recent travel history to China. This takes the total number of cases in Singapore to 43. Of these, six are in critical condition in intensive care.

Is het niet zo dat er voor Hubei al gerapporteerd wordt over NCIP (mensen die geïnfecteerd zijn en longontsteking hebben)? De cijfers daar zijn eigenlijk al niet te vergelijken met die buiten Hubei.

Naast Apple-apparaten worden er in de fabrieken ook apparaten van Google, Amazon, HP, Dell en Huawei geproduceerd, schrijft Nikkei. Wanneer de fabriek zijn deuren dan wel weer kan openen, wordt niet genoemd. Dat laat Foxconn aan de autoriteiten over. Vliegtickets van Taiwanese Foxconn-werknemers daterend tot en met 14 februari zijn in ieder geval geannuleerd.

Nikkei schrijft verder dat Compal, een leverancier van iPads die 1600 kilometer verderop zit, ook zijn deuren gesloten houdt wegens het virus. Waar het werk op 10 februari hervat zou worden, is dat nu 17 februari.

Daily NK, which relies on sources inside North Korea that send reports via Chinese mobile phone networks to contacts in China, said authorities had “ordered public health officials in Sinuiju to quickly dispose of the bodies and keep the deaths secret from the public.”

The victims had crossed the porous Yalu River border despite orders to cut off traffic from China as the disease radiated from the industrial city of Wuhan where the virus originated in December. As of Sunday, more than 700 people had died inside China.

One of the first patients in North Korea reportedly was hospitalized in Sinuiju “with symptoms similar to a cold and was given fever reducers and antibiotics,” said Daily NK, but the patient died as the fever rose. Two more patients died two days later in another hospital in Sinuiju and another two in a nearby town.

Where had the Brighton coronavirus patient been?

The British man visited Singapore on business from 20 to 23 January, before staying at a chalet in the Alpine resort area of Les Contamines-Montjoie near Mont Blanc.

He flew back to the UK from Geneva on 28 January, easyJet confirmed.

Four adults and a nine-year-old child were subsequently diagnosed with the virus after coming into contact with him. They are not in a serious condition.

The group were staying at this chalet in the French Alpine ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie
EasyJet said in a statement on Monday that health officials are trying to trace other passengers on flight EZS8481 to London Gatwick who might be at risk.

On his return to the UK, the Brighton man visited The Grenadier pub in Hove.

Om eerlijk te zijn zal het me aan m'n reet roesten wat er in Noord-Korea gebeurd met het virus. Het halve land ligt regelmatig al op sterven dus nog een virusje erbij zal weinig uitmaken, laat staan dat wij er nog iets van meekrijgen.

History has demonised the super-spreader. Irish cook Mary Mallon (1869-1938) is remembered as "Typhoid Mary" after unknowingly passing on the disease when she had no symptoms. She spent decades in exile and forced quarantine.

But in reality it's not the patient's fault.

Having no symptoms, making unusually large amounts of virus or mixing with lots of people can all lead to super-spreading.
