"The numbers tell a striking story — that this president is not simply a polarizing figure but a radicalizing one," Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, said in a statement. "Rather than trying to tamp down hate, as presidents of both parties have done, President Trump elevates it — with both his rhetoric and his policies. In doing so, he's given people across America the go-ahead to to act on their worst instincts."SPOILERThe Southern Poverty Law Center is a revered civil rights watchdog group that has been around since 1971. It is credited with dealing the final blows to the Ku Klux Klan through legal battles.
But in the Trump era, it has been accused of blurring the line between watchdog and activist. Critics accuse the group of overblowing the threat of hate and including groups and individuals on its lists who might not belong, from anti-immigrant groups to exclusionary religious organizations. In 2018, SPLC President Richard Cohen publicly apologized and the group paid out $3.4 million to British political activist Maajid Nawaz for including him on its anti-Muslim extremist list in 2016. The self-declared former Muslim extremist is often criticized for aligning himself with right-wing anti-Muslim politicians, but even his critics questioned his inclusion on the list.
The center found that the majority of hate groups in the United States are driven by white supremacist ideology including neo-Nazis; the Ku Klux Klan, which is on the decline; white nationalists; racist skinheads; and neo-Confederates. But in reaction to the flourishing of white supremacists, the center says that black nationalist groups are also "growing their ranks." It said the groups are often anti-Semitic, anti-LGBT and anti-white but, unlike white nationalist groups, have little support and basically no sway in politics.
The SPLC defines a hate group as an organization that "based on its official statements or principles, the statements of its leaders, or its activities — has beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people typically for their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity."
The center's report tracks with the steady rise in hate crimes documented by the FBI from 2015 to 2017. It reported a 17 percent jump in hate crimes in 2017, with a particular increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes. But that list isn't complete because local law enforcement agencies report hate crimes to the FBI on a voluntary basis.
The report found that although white supremacists are emboldened under the Trump administration and driven by the fear of the United States' changing demographics — by 2044 the U.S. is expected to be majority minority — and by xenophobia, the groups are beginning to lose faith in the president. It quotes the now infamous white nationalist leader Richard Spencer as evidence. Spencer led a group of white supremacists in Nazi salutes and chants of "Hail Trump" after the 2016 election. But in 2018, following the midterms, he said, "The Trump moment is over, and it's time for us to move on."
Three groups are suing the Southern Poverty Lawsuit Center over their inclusion on the hate groups list. Among those suing is the Center for Immigration Studies, a conservative think tank that is widely seen as anti-immigration.
"We stand by our hate group listings," said Heidi Beirich said in a press call. "I would suggest that people take a look at our extremist files ... The Center for Immigration Studies, the group has a history of making racially inflammatory statements associating with white nationalists and circulating the work of racist writers."

In that race, Dowless’ candidate, Todd Johnson, came in third place in the election even though he won all but four of the 218 absentee ballots cast in Bladen County. Harris was a candidate in that election as well.
Harris testified that his father decided to hire Dowless despite his concerns.
“Do I agree with their ultimate assessment? No, I thought what he was doing was illegal, and I was right,” John Harris said on the stand. “If he had lost repeatedly I don’t think that they would have decided to go with him, but you know, the fact that he had a demonstrated record of success and other people were endorsing his program, I think that weighed heavily for them.”SPOILEREarlier this week, the board heard testimony about what state investigators described as a “coordinated, unlawful” mail-in ballot “scheme” in Bladen County run by Dowless that included the collection of absentee ballots, which isillegal in North Carolina.
The step-daughter of Dowless, Lisa Britt, testified that she would sometimes fill out incomplete ballots for the Republican candidates. She said, however, that she did not fill out ballots for Harris.
John Harris provided email exchanges with his father about Dowless’ apparent practices in the 2016 race, including an email in April of 2017, just prior to Harris’ hiring of Dowless, where he told his father that it is a felony to mail someone else’s ballot and that it is “a legal gray area” even if Dowless put the ballot in a voters’ own mailbox.
“I can tell you that my view is that they heard my concerns, that other people that were a lot closer to the situation and Mr. Dowless endorsed his activity, and Mr. Dowless lied to them repeatedly,” he said.
His testimony could have a decisive impact as the five-member board weighs whether to certify the results of last November's results or call for a new election. Mark Harris is the unofficial leader of the race by just 905 votes over Democrat Dan McCready, but allegations of absentee ballot irregularities in two rural counties — Bladen and Robeson — have delayed the certification of the race.
John Harris was called to the stand by state investigators and neither the Harris nor McCready teams knew he was going to testify.
Mark Harris will take the stand Thursday morning, the fourth day of the hearing.
John Harris also said that his father told him that he was going to hire Dowless as a contractor through the Red Dome consulting group in order to add a layer of separation from the campaign.
Harris’ attorneys have attempted to separate Harris from Dowless throughout the hearing, but Wednesday's testimony damaged that argument.
Choking back tears, John Harris said he thought more about his children than his parents when considering his decision to testify.
“I love my dad, I love my mom, O.K.? I certainly have no vendetta against them, no family scores to settle, O.K.? I think they made mistakes in this process and they certainly did things differently than I would have done,” Harris said while his father looked on wiping back tears.
"We have got to come up with a way to transcend our partisan politics, and the exploitation of processes like this for political gain. That goes for both parties, Democrats and Republicans. And Libertarians," he said.
“I’m just left thinking that we can all do a lot better than this.”

Aides for Castro, who is leading the effort, circulated an email Wednesday afternoon announcing plans to introduce the resolution of disapproval after Trump’s declaration was published in the Federal Register this week.
Democrats are also expected to file a lawsuit to halt Trump’s effort to circumvent Congress to build his border wall.SPOILERTrump issued the emergency proclamation Friday after signing a bill that funds the government through September, including allocating $1.375 billion for border fencing. So far, more than 100 House Democrats have signed onto the resolution with more likely to join, according to a Democratic aide. Lawmakers wishing to co-sponsor it have until 3 p.m. Thursday to do so, according to the email from aides to Castro, who also serves as chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
As soon as the House votes on the resolution, the clock starts for Senate GOP leaders, who are required under law to put the measure to a vote within 18 days.
It would take just four GOP senators to join with Democrats to approve the resolution, which appears quite plausible given Republican concern with Trump’s emergency declaration.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Wednesday became the first GOP senator to publicly say she would support the Democratic resolution, according to the AP. Speaking at a Coast Guard ceremony in her state, Collins said Trump’s move “completely undermines” the role of Congress.
Trump would be certain to issue the first veto of his presidency over the measure — though it is unlikely Congress could override him. In the House, more than 50 Republicans would need to join with Democrats to secure the needed 288 votes.

Je ziet ook dat de DNC duidelijk hem die wind uit de zeilen wil nemen door op het overdreven af iedereen een gelijke kans te willen geven.

Interest centers on a U.S. attorney’s office inquiry into Michael Cohen, Trump Organization

The investigation began as a probe of the business dealings of Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former lawyer, and has broadened to examine the Trump Organization.
Mr. Cohen on Wednesday is set to deliver public testimony for the first time before the House Oversight Committee, in which he is expected to talk about his decade of working for Mr. Trump and about the hush-money payments he arranged during the 2016 campaign to women who alleged sexual encounters with Mr. Trump. Mr. Cohen has pleaded guilty to charges including campaign-finance violations and lying to Congress, and last year he was sentenced to three years in prison.
Federal prosecutors have directly implicated the president in the payoff scheme, referring to him in court papers as “Individual-1,” alleging publicly what The Wall Street Journal previously had detailed in its reporting on those payments.
Mr. Trump has denied wrongdoing.
There is no sign Mr. Whitaker acted on any request from Mr. Trump, which the New York Times reported last week. But the House Judiciary Committee is investigating whether Mr. Whitaker may have perjured himself in his appearance before the panel earlier this month, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. Mr. Whitaker told the panel: “At no time has the White House asked for nor have I provided any promises or commitments concerning the special counsel’s investigation or any other investigation.”
Any evidence that Mr. Trump sought to intervene in the federal prosecutors’ probe could propel further lines of inquiry by lawmakers into whether he has tried to obstruct the investigation into his business dealings.SPOILERMr. Trump, a person close to the president said, is expected to aggressively defend himself after Mr. Cohen’s Wednesday testimony, which the former Trump lawyer postponed following threats he alleged were made by the president against his father-in-law. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D., N.Y.), the House Judiciary chairman, tweeted last week that the panel wanted the former acting attorney general to return and “clarify his testimony.”
Mr. Whitaker declined to comment. Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec also wouldn’t comment on Mr. Whitaker’s private conversations with the president, saying Mr. Whitaker stood by his committee testimony. Mr. Trump last week called reports of the conversation about Mr. Berman “fake news.”
Mr. Trump in the past year has had frequent private discussions with advisers and allies in which he has complained about federal prosecutors, whose investigations into Mr. Trump’s business and inaugural committee are examining dealings by some of the president’s closest associates.
Several congressional committees have also said they plan to probe the hush-money payments Mr. Cohen arranged during the 2016 campaign to women who alleged sexual encounters with Mr. Trump.
People close to the president said he believes Mr. Cohen’s coming testimony will be a distraction from his talks with Pyongyang. “What the president is doing with North Korea is a very, very big deal,” one of the people said. “For that to be sidetracked for nothing other than a partisan shitshow—it’d frustrate any president,” the person said.
The White House declined to comment.
White House advisers have privately expressed relief that the hearing will take place while the president is limited in his ability to monitor the coverage. “You’re not going to have a president who is up in the White House residence watching the hearing and then watching the coverage for 24 hours straight,” a person close to the president said. Even on the lengthy flight back to Washington, this person added, “that’s one of the few places where the president doesn’t have the full TiVo replay capacity that he does in the White House and residence.”
Mr. Trump has also expressed irritation that Congress is now examining Mr. Cohen’s business dealings, after federal prosecutors in New York spent months building a case and charging his former lawyer. “He’s frustrated that Congress wants to keep peeling at this,” one of the people close to Mr. Trump said.
Early last year, Mr. Trump was watching television in his private dining room in the White House as he vented about prosecutors’ apparent growing interest in his and his associates’ finances.
Talking to advisers, Mr. Trump appeared concerned that an “out-of-control prosecutor” examining a person involved in large business transactions would easily be able to find a “technical violation,” a person close to the president said.
“If they really want to, they can always find something on anyone,” Mr. Trump said, according to this person.

Daarin wordt de definitie van een noodtoestand geheel overgelaten aan de goede trouw van de president. Elke politicus in het congres WEET dat Trump met die veto een politiek probleem wil oplossen en geen daadwerkelijke noodzaak. President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen on Tuesday will start a three-day gauntlet of congressional appearances by giving a closed-door interview to the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he is expected to detail what he claims to know about Trump’s contacts with Russia, hush payments made prior to the 2016 election and other sensitive matters.
Cohen is also expected to provide evidence of alleged criminal conduct by Trump since he became president. In addition to his testimony, Cohen will reveal information about Trump’s financial statements, according to NBC News who cited an anonymous source.
Cohen will describe behind the scenes eyewitness and personal observation anecdotes which include lies, racism, and cheating as a private businessman when Cohen worked for him for 10 years, NBC News said.
Trump’s former lawyer plans to tell U.S. lawmakers that Trump asked him several times about a proposed skyscraper project in Moscow long after he secured the Republican presidential nomination, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Cohen’s assertion that Trump was inquiring about the project as late as June 2016, if true, would show Trump remained personally interested in a business venture in Russia well into his candidacy. Cohen, scheduled to report to prison in May, has already said he briefed Trump on the project in June 2016.
Cohen will also discuss his own motives for lying for the president, and why he decided to tell the truth publicly for fear of his family and country. He will detail how and why he made those decisions, according to NBC News.
Senators are suspicious of Cohen, who is set to serve time in prison for lying to the Committee in 2017. But they are also eager to hear what Trump’s former loyal fixer has to say.
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr told The Associated Press that senators will have staff ask questions in Tuesday’s session but will be there to observe. He says no topics will be off limits and that Cohen “should expect to get any question from anywhere about anything.”
