Ex-Clinton staffers slam Sanders over private jet flights

Het was natuurlijk te verwachten, en ook niet onterecht. Bernie heeft met zijn arrogantie nogal wat schade aangericht.

quote:
In his campaign launch video last week, Bernie Sanders singled out the fossil fuel industry for criticism, listing it among the special interests he planned to take on. But in the final months of the 2016 campaign, Sanders repeatedly requested and received the use of a carbon-spewing private jet for himself and his traveling staff when he served as a surrogate campaigner for Hillary Clinton.

In the two years following the presidential election, Sanders continued his frequent private jet travel, spending at least $342,000 on the flights.

(....)

I’m not shocked that while thousands of volunteers braved the heat and cold to knock on doors until their fingers bled in a desperate effort to stop Donald Trump, his Royal Majesty King Bernie Sanders would only deign to leave his plush D.C. office or his brand new second home on the lake if he was flown around on a cushy private jet like a billionaire master of the universe,” said Zac Petkanas, who was the director of rapid response for the Clinton campaign.

In 2016, after Sanders endorsed Clinton and agreed to campaign on her behalf, the Sanders campaign’s preferred mode of travel quickly emerged as a point of tension, according to six former Clinton campaign staffers and another source familiar with the travel.

Those who had worked on his primary campaign made it known that the only logistical way Sanders could adhere to the event schedules requested by the Clinton campaign was by flying private. The Clinton campaign, however, viewed the private jet flights as a needless extravagance and wanted the senator to mostly fly commercial.

Russia: US asks for advice on North Korea talks

quote:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the United States has asked Moscow’s advice in dealing with North Korea before a summit between President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader.

Trump and Kim Jong Un are expected to meet on Wednesday and Thursday in Vietnam’s capital. Their first meeting last summer ended without substantive agreements on North Korea’s nuclear disarmament.

Lavrov, who is also visiting Vietnam this week, said in comments carried by Russian news agencies on Monday that Russia believes that the U.S. ought to offer Pyongyang “security guarantees” for the disarmament deal to succeed. He also mentioned that “the U.S. is even asking our advice, our views on this or that scenario of” how the summit in Hanoi could pan out.

Paul Manafort should receive less than 10 years in prison, his attorneys tell judge

quote:
Attorneys for Paul Manafort said Monday that he should be sentenced to significantly less than the 10-year maximum prison term he faces in his case in Washington, D.C.

Their filing to a federal judge came after a weekend sentencing memo by Robert S. Mueller III’s team that recommended no specific sentence for Manafort, but called President Trump’s former campaign chairman a bold, “hardened” criminal who “repeatedly and brazenly violated the law.”

“As the government itself notes, Mr. Manafort committed ‘garden-variety crimes’” and violated ‘more esoteric’ lobbying registration requirements, Manafort’s defense countered in their filing. “Nevertheless, these “garden-variety” and “esoteric” offenses have led to Mr. Manafort being widely vilified in a manner that this country has not experienced in decades.”

House Investigators Probe Trump Contact With Matthew Whitaker

Interest centers on a U.S. attorney’s office inquiry into Michael Cohen, Trump Organization

quote:
The House Judiciary Committee believes it has evidence that President Trump asked Matthew Whitaker, at the time the acting attorney general, whether Manhattan U.S. attorney Geoffrey Berman could regain control of his office’s investigation into Mr. Trump’s former lawyer and his real-estate business, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Berman, a former law partner of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani who in 2016 donated to the Trump campaign and whom the president personally interviewed for the U.S. attorney job, last year had recused himself from involvement in the matter. He didn’t give a reason, but legal experts said his interim status at the time the probe began would have made his involvement appear improper. The investigation began as a probe of the business dealings of Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former lawyer, and has broadened to examine the Trump Organization.

Mr. Cohen on Wednesday is set to deliver public testimony for the first time before the House Oversight Committee, in which he is expected to talk about his decade of working for Mr. Trump and about the hush-money payments he arranged during the 2016 campaign to women who alleged sexual encounters with Mr. Trump. Mr. Cohen has pleaded guilty to charges including campaign-finance violations and lying to Congress, and last year he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Federal prosecutors have directly implicated the president in the payoff scheme, referring to him in court papers as “Individual-1,” alleging publicly what The Wall Street Journal previously had detailed in its reporting on those payments.

Mr. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

There is no sign Mr. Whitaker acted on any request from Mr. Trump, which the New York Times reported last week. But the House Judiciary Committee is investigating whether Mr. Whitaker may have perjured himself in his appearance before the panel earlier this month, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. Mr. Whitaker told the panel: “At no time has the White House asked for nor have I provided any promises or commitments concerning the special counsel’s investigation or any other investigation.”

Any evidence that Mr. Trump sought to intervene in the federal prosecutors’ probe could propel further lines of inquiry by lawmakers into whether he has tried to obstruct the investigation into his business dealings.

Michael Cohen expected to tell Congress that Trump broke the law while in office: NBC

President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen on Tuesday will start a three-day gauntlet of congressional appearances by giving a closed-door interview to the Senate Intelligence Committee, where he is expected to detail what he claims to know about Trump’s contacts with Russia, hush payments made prior to the 2016 election and other sensitive matters.

Cohen is also expected to provide evidence of alleged criminal conduct by Trump since he became president. In addition to his testimony, Cohen will reveal information about Trump’s financial statements, according to NBC News who cited an anonymous source.

Cohen will describe behind the scenes eyewitness and personal observation anecdotes which include lies, racism, and cheating as a private businessman when Cohen worked for him for 10 years, NBC News said.

Trump’s former lawyer plans to tell U.S. lawmakers that Trump asked him several times about a proposed skyscraper project in Moscow long after he secured the Republican presidential nomination, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Cohen’s assertion that Trump was inquiring about the project as late as June 2016, if true, would show Trump remained personally interested in a business venture in Russia well into his candidacy. Cohen, scheduled to report to prison in May, has already said he briefed Trump on the project in June 2016.

Cohen will also discuss his own motives for lying for the president, and why he decided to tell the truth publicly for fear of his family and country. He will detail how and why he made those decisions, according to NBC News.

Senators are suspicious of Cohen, who is set to serve time in prison for lying to the Committee in 2017. But they are also eager to hear what Trump’s former loyal fixer has to say.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr told The Associated Press that senators will have staff ask questions in Tuesday’s session but will be there to observe. He says no topics will be off limits and that Cohen “should expect to get any question from anywhere about anything.”

—The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to the report.
