Dat artikel is echter nogal betweterig en doet alsof op voorhand wel vastgesteld kan worden waar O'Rourke fout zat, aangezien hij kennelijk al verloren heeft...
Het is echter een beetje te vroeg al het veries van O'Rourke te gaan 'analyseren', aangezien de verkiezingen nog voorstaan.

Onafhankelijkheid werd hoog gevoerd (wat bv een slecht teken voor Cruz is, die niet echt als een eigenzinnige politucs geld, maar eerder nogal een brave mee-stemmer)
sterker nog in 1952 voor de gouverneursverkiezing stond Alan Shivers tweemaal op het ticket, eenmaal voor de democraten en nog een keer voor de republikeinen.

Toen een republikein echter voor het eerst een democraat versloeg was dat net omdat deze John Towers als republikein werkelijk gematigde democraten wist te overtuigen en hun stemmen won, maar vooral omdat liberale democraten weigerden voor de ultra conservatieve democratische kandidaat (en ultieme 'Shiver-cat) William Arvis "Dollar Bill" Blakley te stemmen, nadat deze eerder een erg 'hete' primary tegen een liberale kandidaat uitgevochten (en verloren) had (smilin' Ralph Yarborough; een zeer liberale en progressieve southern democrat waaraan O'Rourke zich vast dolgraag zal spiegelen: https://www.texasobserver(...)ch-a-new-generation/ )...

De republikeinen wonnen in 1961 niet van democraten doordat een groot aantal democratische kiezers 'overtuigden', maar ze wisten te profiteren van erg onpopulaire en omstreden kandidaten aan democratische zijde, waardoor de eigen achterban deels thuisbleef..
de opkomst was catastrophaal, slechts 9,25% opkomst (tegenover een opkomst van 25% een jaar eerder, al was die zetel toen door Lyndon B. Johnson binnegehaald)
Tower won overigens met 50,6% van de stemmen, Blakley haalde 49,4% in 1961 .... maar het was vooral het thuisblijven van liberalere en progressieve democraten dat hem de das omdeed

Ben jij wel eens in Texas geweest? De afstanden zijn er enorm. Kiezers die overwegend democratisch stemmen (van Mexicaanse oorsprong) zitten vaak op werklocaties vér van de bewoonde wereld af. Een formulier ophalen en een halve dag in de rij staan om te stemmen kost ze minstens twee dagen en net zo veel loon, die ze zich niet kunnen veroorloven.

A Russian billionaire who orchestrated the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting formed a new American shell company a month beforehand with an accountant who has had clients accused of money laundering and embezzlement.

The billionaire, Aras Agalarov, created the US company anonymously while preparing to move almost $20m into the country during the time of the presidential election campaign, according to interviews and corporate filings.

The company was set up for him in May 2016 by his Russian-born accountant, who has also managed the US finances of compatriots accused of mishandling millions of dollars. One of those clients has its own connection to the Trump Tower meeting.

In June 2016, Agalarov allegedly offered Trump’s team damaging information from the Kremlin about Hillary Clinton, their Democratic opponent. The offer led Trump’s eldest son to hold a meeting at their Manhattan offices that is now a focus of the inquiry into Moscow’s election interference by Robert Mueller, the special counsel.

Agalarov’s previously unreported shell company is another example of intriguing financial activity around the time of the Trump Tower meeting. Mueller is looking into such activity and whether any of the money involved could have been used to fund Russian meddling in the US election, which Agalarov denies.

Turkish officials have said they possess evidence showing that 15 Saudi agents dismembered and assassinated Mr. Khashoggi in the consulate. After two weeks of blanket denials and mounting pressure from Turkey and Washington, Saudi Arabia said it would conduct its own investigation to determine who was responsible.

But even with the investigation still ostensibly underway, the Saudis are already pointing to General Assiri as the culprit, according to the three people familiar with the Saudi plans. People close to the White House have already been briefed and given General Assiri's name.

Whether that move will be enough to calm the international crisis and what it may mean for Prince Mohammed, the kingdom's day-to-day ruler, remain to be seen.

Jared Kushner seems to think the mounting international tensions sparked by Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance will blow over.

President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser has urged him to stand by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, thinking the outrage sparked by the suspected murder of a Washington Post columnist "will pass," The New York Times reports.

Kushner reportedly pointed to other recent incidents that the public largely moved on from, such as when 40 children were killed in a Saudi-led airstrike last month. CNN reports that Kushner and the crown prince have a close relationship and have communicated privately on WhatsApp.

Saudi Arabia is considering placing blame for Khashoggi's suspected death on one of the crown prince's advisers, reports the Times. Officials will reportedly admit that bin Salman ordered General Ahmed al-Assiri to capture Khashoggi so he could be brought to Saudi Arabia for interrogation, but will say he didn't authorize Assiri to kill him. Khashoggi visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month to obtain a marriage document and has not been heard from since. The United States has reportedly been briefed on the Saudis' plans to blame Assiri.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the United States would give Saudi Arabia a few more days to complete its investigation, at which point they will examine the facts before deciding whether to respond.
