quote:The snowed-in speech: May pedals furiously down a dead end
The choice is simple. If Britain keeps all its control it must give up its trade. But if it wants to keep all its trade, it must lose some control. This is not because Brussels is mean or vengeful. It is because it facilitates open borders on the basis that they are all part of the same legal system, with the same monitoring and enforcement bodies operating amid the same institutions. The UK is leaving those arrangements and consequences follow from that. At the moment, Britain looks like a teenager telling his parents he is leaving the house, but still demanding they drive over and cook his meals.

Britain basically has gone mad and in its spasm of anti-social behaviour it has settled on a plan which gives it everything it wants and none of the things it does not want. That is as far away from the pragmatic and workmanlike solutions of the EEA agreement as you're likely to get.
The EU response, which is not unfair given the circumstances, is that, well - Brexit means Brexit. If you don't want the rights and responsibilities then you're looking at an old-school goods-only trade deal, like Canada's. Probably they will find one single, solitary plus to stick on the end - some kind of moderate compromise on financial services, which manages to ease the concerns of several member states about access to London and offer May something to sell back home. It'll be devastating and self-harming to sabotage Britain's trading prospects with such a deal, but that is the direction of travel.
Today's speech was probably the last chance to change course, no matter how unlikely that was to happen. The fact she chose not to suggests that is now our final destination. It is not a good one. The next months will be very rough.

The EU has been arguing for a change to the ownership and control rule for decades but the US has never said yes. It’s been a sticking point forever. If the US has never bent before then why would they do it just for the UK?” he said, adding that such a change could set a big precedent.

quote:EU accuses Theresa May of ‘double cherry-picking’
Theresa May’s Mansion House speech on Brexit last week amounted to “double cherry-picking” with “no change in substance” from her government’s previous position, according to a confidential European Commission assessment circulated to diplomats from EU countries.
It concluded that although she took a more realistic tone, the prime minister had ultimately confirmed Britain’s red lines and once again “addressed more her domestic audience, trying to bridge the gaps between the two poles of the debate on Brexit in the U.K.”
quote:European Parliament outlines its post-Brexit vision
A “deep and comprehensive” trade deal of the kind the U.K. says it wants with the EU would require Britain to accept a “binding convergence mechanism” with EU laws, according to a draft resolution from the European Parliament obtained by POLITICO.
The Parliament does not have a formal role in the Brexit negotiations but it will have a binding vote on the eventual deal. The draft resolution — the fourth issued by the Parliament on Brexit — is designed to put pressure on the EU and U.K. to take heed of MEPs’ wishes.
Many of the 65 clauses in the document, which is a draft and therefore subject to change, read as a direct rebuttal of the vision of Brexit that U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May set out in her Mansion House speech last week.
quote:Donald Tusk issues draft guidelines for post-Brexit trade deal
There’s only one dish on the EU’s post-Brexit, future relationship menu: a free trade agreement with zero tariffs, covering all goods — and perhaps services “to an extent.”
European Council President Donald Tusk put forward draft negotiating guidelines Wednesday that seek to maintain “as close as possible a partnership with the U.K.” but that is effectively constrained to a free trade agreement because of London’s insistence on quitting the EU single market and customs union.
The six-page draft document, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO, makes no specific mention of financial services, which the U.K. is keen to include in a future partnership agreement because of London’s lucrative banking industry.
premier May over de toekomstige band
quote:Carmakers warn Theresa May: Brexit barriers make our plants more expensive
Carmakers are already drawing up plans to handle multiple scenarios including tariffs and delays at ports which would hit a global business model reliant on the swift movement of components, engines and finished models across borders.
“It costs us two-digit million number of pounds which is absolutely wasted if the one or the other condition is going to happen but at the end of the day we cannot risk the company,” Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Chief Executive Ralf Speth told Reuters at the Geneva Motor Show.
“We are talking about minutes at the borders and if we are out of the minutes, we have huge disadvantages in terms of inventory, logistics and therefore we have to do all this kind of contingency planning now,” said Speth, who heads up Britain’s biggest car company.
He also warned that any divergence in vehicle standards between Britain and the European Union, which are currently the same, would be a “fallback to the Middle Ages.”
